A great find! True NYC chopped cheese subs that tastes authentic, reasonably priced and super tasty! Two short blocks from Powell Street cable car turn around. It's on Eddy Street and Mason, so you will see some characters on the sidewalk but it's not that bad. Anticipate a long line and considerable wait time if you come between 6:30 PM - 8 PM. This is a hole in the wall and you don't really have option other than taking your order and eat it somewhere else. The people are nice, the chopped cheese subs are good and the prices are reasonable. Man, this might be a habit forming but I'm not complaining. read more

So the pizza I had was good. They are open really late hours so that's a great advantage there's always sketchy looking guys hanging out in the front lol I just go in with my headphones, but this chopped cheese I didn't really like so much the ground beef was seasoned great but there were sweet peppers in there and I don't like sweet peppers with my savory food at allllll it made it kinda nasty... I wish I would've knew that there were gonna be sweet peppers, I would've told them not to put it in there. I would have rather jalapeños, so the chopped cheese gets a two out of five for me , maybe next time jalapeños instead of the sweet peppers and it will taste better to me read more

This is a true neighborhood gem and a key establishment within the district. This bodega is important to the people living and staying in the hood. It's clutch for late night food and those wanting a hardy greasy-spoon sandwich, burger, pizza, plans of course my ultimate favorite, chopped cheese. I had to have one of these! They toast their long roll and dump freshly grilled burger meat with spices, mayo, ketchup, spinach, and lots of American cheese. It comes together nicely and is truly satisfying. The bread is toasted perfectly and the ingredients/toppings mush together so well. It's what I imagined what a NY chopped cheese would taste like. I still like my cheesesteaks by a small margin BUT this here is almost just as good. I've got to come back again! This is straight fire! Huge s/o to all the cousins working here; they're cool & collected and know everyone on the block. I hope to be a regular here too! read more

This no frills spot has an amazing chopped cheese sandwich. Similar to NY! It was delicious, a good sized portion, and the price point was very reasonable. I tried the chopped cheese and the Philly steak and the chopped cheese won the battle. There is no formal spot to eat- just a few stools and a countertop lining the walls. So be prepared to take your food to go if it's too packed inside. The food came out fast and fresh. The biggest drawback to coming here is the neighborhood. Parking was a huge hassle, walking to the restaurant you'll be walking past all the homelessness that SF has to offer. But I will say that the folks on that block was somewhat courteous. We were walking with a group of small children and they saw us coming and said "small kids coming!" and they all moved aside and it looked like they tried hiding all their paraphernalia from the kids views. At the end of the day, we are all humans, just trying to survive. So if you can get past the neighborhood nuances, this is a great spot to check out for cheap and delicious eats! read more

Area sucks, the service took forever for 2 slices (40 mins), the workers are all over the place with no organization. I would get a slice somewhere else. Takes forever and pretty sure they forgot to even put the pizza order in until 30 mins later. Id had colonoscopy be faster then this service. Vibe isn't it. read more

Damn yes I went at 10:30 pm into a sketchy part of downtown just for Chopped cheese and it was so damn good!! Worth risking my life for it! I've had NY chopped cheese and this was better, yep I said it. They use the right bread! I've made chopped cheese at home, it doesn't taste the same because I don't have that bread! It's crunchy, light in the middle, it's perfect. The meat is so flavorful, only downfall, I think it needed more cheese. read more

Ordered this via UberEats and it came super fast & piping hot! The price was great, I ordered 3 sandwiches and it was less than $40! And they're HUGE. Literally the size of my forearm! I love how the bread didn't get soggy despite all of the different ingredients. I preferred the Mexican steak chopped cheese over the regular chopped cheese as it had a more savory taste to it. The regular chopped cheese was a bit too sweet for my liking. read more

Word around the street is that there's a late night spot to grab a chopped cheese, so after a show at the Masonic, we decided to walk down and give it a try. When we arrived around 11:30PM, there was a line out the door. While we were in line all I kept hearing was chopped cheese the 'ocky way'. It's just a chopped cheese sandwich as is on the menu. Either way I ordered one and their Mexican chopped cheese. Order took around 20 minutes, and we got our order to go. First thing you'll notice is how massive this thing was. We got both 12" sandwiches for a total of $25, which is a crazy good deal considering the amount of food. The chopped cheese itself was good but something made it a little too sweet. Don't know if it was the ketchup but it needs some spice or pepper. The Mexican chopped cheese I thought had better flavor overall, and I'd get that over the regular chopped cheese. This is a great after the bar/concert food spot, but I don't think it's something I'd crave everyday. The area around it is a bit rough, so it's a spot that I'd have to be nearby already to go to. So there I was, visiting San Francisco from working my ass off in LA, I was craving pizza late night around 1030pm on a Tuesday and searched pizza near my hotel within walking distance..I saw how delicious the pizza looked here so I went. Got there and OH MY!! Homeless and druggies EVERYWHERE, felt totally unsafe around that pizza joint. I ended up ordering spinach cheese pizza and waited like 20mins or so, felt longer due to the crowd around it..then got back to hotel and was relieved I survived my 1st night in San Francisco. WORD TO THE WISE, dont act/look scared or touristy and you should be fine. Also dont wear anything expensive or skin tight to draw attention. Other than that, the food was amazing! Staple to the Civic Center Tenderloin hands down! This is the place you want to be after leaving the bar or the Warfield. You find all walks of life, but one thing is true which is the love for the food. The Big Apple has so many different subs, pizza, sides, wings n thangs to choose from. But I stick with the classics like the Chopped Cheese Roll and a side of fries. The chopped cheese has everything you need: meat, cheese, veggies, bread and sauces! The fries are alright, it's no beer battered fry, but my fiancé loved them. A good French fry doesn't need to be dipped. When you need a sauce for your fry that means your fry ain't that fly and needs a side kick. The Big Apple Pizza N Grill and it never disappoints and is always consistent with their food quality and speedy service! Till we meet again! read more

I came to this place as I saw it was popular on social media. I got the chopped cheese as I was missing it from my trip to NY. I will say this place was over hyped by people who haven't experienced an actual chopped cheese. It was priced fairly and good size sandwich. However the meat quality was not the best. I am not surprised to see a place like this getting 3-4 star reviews. And in all honesty, it's not the biggest or fanciest or anything like that, but it's totally legit and down to earth. My friend has been craving a chopped cheese since having one in NYC and we hit this spot up. Totally not dissappointed. Chopped cheese was fire, totally stuff, and not dry at all. I got mine with the honey garlic sauce and it was gaassss! The menu itself is super packed and this is totally a great spot to hit after a night out. The staff was also really nice and they were cooking up the entire time we were there. It took about 15 min to get our foot long chopped cheeses! For the price, hella worth it. We went here after a concert to get a few slices. Pizza sold by the slice should be at least quick, preferably cheap, and decent flavor wise. This pizza was none of these things. We waited around 15 minutes for two slices of pepperoni. The pepperoni might have been placed on top after the pizza was cooked, it fell off very easily and did not seem cooked at all. It was just under $11 total for both slices. read more

Is this place going to change your life? No. Is this place somewhere I'd go when I'm sober? Probably not. But is this place perfect for when you're getting rained on, it's after midnight, you're a little buzzed, and you're calling it a night? Yup. This place will do the trick. This place otherwise is just okay. It was a longer than expected wait time but that's okay. My group and I had the chance to wait out the rain as the food cooked. Perhaps a big group came before me and my group arrived and cleaned out the place because there wasn't much prepared or out. The pizza slices are pretty big and resemble how large the slices in New York are but it's definitely not the same high quality. I'm from the city. So I would know. It tasted like it would be great for college students but as someone whose past those days, I wouldn't actively go out my way to choose to eat here. The workers are cool. Like I said, seems like they got pretty hard right before I arrived and so they seemed a bit out of breath. They were courteous and nice tho. Overall. Id say it deserves 2.5 stars. Perhaps more like a 2 but the prices were pretty good and so that gives it a little boost. read more

Surprisingly solid food from one of those order whatever your heart desires pizza/sanwhich/halal shops! So I stumbled on this place bc it is one of the only places I could find that has chopped cheese. Been wanting to try it for forever. So I ordered the chopped cheese and a lamb halal plate. Location is not in the best area of SF so be aware that you will be seeing all kinds of people in the streets and inside. The place itself is small, there are stools to sit and counter to eat on but that's up to you. It took a while for us to get our food...45 min-1hour. From the time our orders were taken to the time it was done. I ordered the chopped cheese/cheesesteak hero (6 inch) with mushrooms and waffle fries. The sandwich was plain and simple, well seasoned, but I do feel that there wasn't much mushrooms added. The bread was soft and just right. Waffle fries were stale and not fried crispy enough to my liking. Overall, this place isn't bad at all but I'd try something else next time. We also wanted their pressed juices but were told it was discontinued because it wasn't selling. read more

The pizza has charred edges like Neapolitan which adds a nice smokey flavor. The crust has zero flop and a nice golden crust on top. Sauce has a tough of sweetness. I also enjoyed their use of fresh basil and the grated Parmigiano-Reggiano they throw on at the end. It's kinda like a new york slice, but a little gourmet? Very tasty for sure. Critiques: First off, each slice is $6-7, which is a bit steep. Maybe times have changed, but this is def not a budget meal, especially if you are eating multiple slices. Second, some of their already crispy slices have been sitting on display for some time and completely cooled down. When these slices are then reheated, there is a bit of an overcooked taste? Lastly, they only have a few topping options and the quantity of toppings on each slice (especially protein) is pretty sparse. I also ordered a slice of the Sicilian as well to mix things up. It was good, but the crust was just a touch too greasy for me.

In all honesty, I wish there was a bit more toppings to accommodate the amount of bread to topping ratio as this felt more of a cheesy bread sticks from Pizza My Heart. My favorite thing about this place is there were chilled glasses with taps for still water and sparkling water, which was free. Came in for their iconic NY style chopped cheese sandwich and I was NOT dissapointed! The ground beef was seasoned, browned, and chopped up on the grill with onions and peppers. It was then coated in melted cheese and tucked into a toasted hero, where it's dressed with lettuce, tomato, more onion, and a generous slathering of mayonnaise and ketchup. It's warm, wet, messy, and delicious, activating a pleasure center in the brain that I'm confident no fine dining can reach. I visited for their famous New York style chopped cheese sandwich, and I was NOT disappointed! On the grill, onions, peppers, and the ground beef were chopped, seasoned, and browned. It was then covered in melted cheese and placed into a toasted hero, where it was topped with lettuce, tomato, more onion, mayonnaise, and ketchup. No fancy meal, in my opinion, can activate the brain's pleasure center like this food can since it's warm, wet, messy, and delicious. David, the proprietor, recently relocated to the bay from New York and brought with him 15 years of deli experience. I visited Big Apple Pizza and Grill in San Francisco to try their Chopped Cheese sandwich, and while the food itself was solid, the overall experience left much to be desired. The sandwich was tasty, but the customer service was disappointing. My order was incorrect--I specifically asked for no tomato, but it came with tomato, and I ordered waffle fries but received curly fries instead. Mistakes happen, but the lack of attention to detail and care in fixing the issue made it frustrating. Despite the food being good, the poor service overshadowed the experience. You couldn't pay me enough to walk in the place. The owners own the bodega across the street. Where they sell loose cigarettes for 50 cents and miniscule bottles of liquor for a dollar. Smart people do not hang out in the Tenderloin. Lowlives and degenerates are their top customers. The poorly educated and cluekess I'd starve before eating here. I have to admit, I ventured into the hood to try the famous chopped cheese sandwich that my friend recommended, and it was totally worth it! I'd drive there any day for it. My son and daughter also enjoyed their slices of cheese pizza, and they had plenty of fries options and dessert options. But for me, it was all about the chopped cheese. I've always been a fan of mushrooms and ordered the last cheesesteak I can remember with mushrooms as well so I figured it would be a safe bet. I'm a big fan of the staff. The cashier noticed we had picked up some other items already and offered us another bag to consolidate those items. I would totally come back and recommend it to anybody looking for a quick and delicious dinner!

A smaller joint that might be easy to walk by, we found this place on Google and decided to give it a go. Walking inside, there are a few tables to sit and eat at, or you can take it to go. Right away, I knew this was a family business and was able to order quickly at the counter. My partner and I got a slice each of the chicken alfredo pizza and the spicy chicken pizza. It took about 10 minutes for our slices to come fresh out of the oven and wow! It was so worth. The slices are massive and a great value for the price. The dough itself is sturdy and able to hold up the sauce and toppings nicely. The pizza tasted fresh and the veggies had a nice snap to it. This was a great choice and I recommend going here for delicious pizza!
