This neat little bayou restaurant is outstanding. It's a nice laid back atmosphere. The I had the fish plate and it was damn good food. The fish was breaded and cooked real nice, the hush puppies were outta this world good, the slaw had the right amount of sweetness, the potato salad had a bit of smokie to it which tied the whole thing together and the sweet tea caped it off along with the view of the canal. Great service at this local favorite. On a quiet creek, nice deck, attentive servers, good food. They will bring you insect-repelling candles, which is a thoughtful gesture for this creekside restaurant. Had a burger, which was good - points for asking how I wanted it cooked - and fries, which were also very good. They do have some local/craft beers. Wow! This place was great! We stumbled upon this place as we were on our way back to our hotel and it's off the beaten path a bit but well worth it. It was my first time trying gumbo and it was amazing. Wished it came in a larger bowl! The menu is a nice variety as well. I usually get the captain's plate its a mound of sea food shrimp, crabclaws, oysters ,a huge fish filet with your choice of sides. This place is a dive if I've ever seen one. BUT that is why it's so great. It's a hidden gem in Fairhope on the fish river. The atmosphere is "fishing shack", the only way to describe it. It's so much fun, the kids can play outside and you can watch the boats go up and down the river. Even in the heat of the summer the outside seating is comfortable. Surrounded by trees and the river keep it cooler so you wont die of the heat. Now the important part, THE FOOD!!! Ohmygod, go hungry because you will not be disappointed. It's a fried food paradise, but doesn't taste greasy at all. Done to perfection. The service is as outstanding as their food. Prices are reasonable for all the food you do get, and it's a lot. Casual but very good food. This place is "off" the beaten path outside Fairhope. If you are out for a fun drive or craving views and a laid back afternoon, this should be one of your stops. The service is very casual so don't go if you are in a hurry, but everyone is friendly and the food is truly excellent. Portions are huge, prices are low and quality is very good. read more

Food is always cooked to order. Wait staff is excellent. We enjoy sitting outside and watch the river or listen to live music on the weekends. I'm not a fan of beer so I wish they would carry a hard lemonade, ice or twisted tea to enjoy when it gets hot outside. Be sure and purchase a VIP card. You get discounts off your food. Great idea. It stinks I did not get pictures of the view or the food but I guess that's to be expected these days with a wild one year old! We had the crispy okra which was fantastic, the wings which my husband said they were really good, my son had the kids fried shrimp which made my husband and I both regret not ordering shrimp.... they were SO GOOD!!! You know a good, fresh shrimp when you have one and those were both plus some. I had a burger with bacon, cheese and jalapeños. One of the best burgers I have ever had. I'm talking one of those flat top, greasy get all up in my mouth and dreams burgers. My side was onion rings which were perfectly cooked without onion sliding out and slapping me in the face. Only negative was my drink was spilled on me when our food was delivered and the bus boy did not apologize but did bring me a towel. Our waitress asked to refill it but it was too sweet anyway and accidents happen. I was not going to let that ruin our meal because our waitress Taylor was the sweetest. Recently visited a buddy on the Redneck Riviera.He recommended a trip to Big Daddys Grill.We sat outside,pretty masochistic thing to do in LA(Lower Alabama) in August.Heat and humidity wasn't as bad as I remember. The kids played in the sand area designed just for that purpose. Our server was quick to greet us and take drink orders and even faster getting them to us.The Yeungleng draft was cold and welcomed.She offered to take the food orders but we weren't ready.She returned quickly, but not too soon to make us feel rushed, and in perfect time to get food order and another round of beers. Our food came out promptly and everyone's burgers were cooked to order from medium rare to well.I like the fact you can can split sides as in half fries and half onion rings.The kids just had fries,dessert,and pink lemonade.They enjoyed them,but had a hard time staying out of the sand. I don't normally complain about restaurants...but I'm about to right now. I usually LOVE Big Daddy's Grill on Fish River. My family and I have many fond memories there. However today was the LAST day we will ever eat there. We sent Julia and Ryan down about 3 minutes ahead of us to get our name on the list. They refused to seat them (which is not what we wanted...just put our name on the damn list...we had a party if 8). So David called the lady and she confirmed that we couldn't get on the list until all members of the party were present. Well, we arrived about 2 minutes later and the hostess gruffly said, "Are all members of your party here?" To which we responded yes. She said it would be about 15 minutes to wait to sit where we wanted. Or, she could seat us immediately by their "Outside Tiki Bar." So we said okay, AFTER my mother asked about smoking. To which the hostess said, "There is no smoking allowed at any of our tables!" So we were seated and greeted with a FABULOUS server. About 5 minutes after receiving our drink orders, a slew of bikers came rolling in. Susanne thought that was great! Well, SOME of the bikers began smoking at the bar. We decided to move tables farther away from the smoke. We were greeted and thanked by several of the bikers saying that they would not smoke at all anyway. They even brought the kiddies "Jesus Bracelets" or maybe they were "Christian Bracelets." Susanne and I finished eating and she wanted to walk closer to the sand pit. Well by this time there were about 100 bikers present with about 45-50 of them smoking. Not near where we were seated. So we tried walking around and around to get to the bathroom, the sand pit, the deck...we couldn't get through without crossing the sea of second hand smoke. So we held our breath and made it to the sand pit. And she and I remained there until the end of our outing. Meanwhile (before, during, and AFTER the bikers arrived) David had gone to request that we be moved. My mother requested that we be moved. And every time they were turned away RUDELY by the same hostess. We even had another hostess (about 16 years old) come and say, "There were no tables available where we wanted to sit (which we were obviously in the smoking and 1/2 second hand smoking area). Obviously, they were more accommodating to the smokers than the CHILDREN with asthma. The gruff hostess could have easily said, "It is possible that there may be some smokers, I suggest that you want the 10-15 minutes to avoid you have a TERRIBLE second-hand smokey experience at our restaurant." We live nearby and have kayaked to the restaurant, we've come on a pontoon boat, and we've come on our motorcycle. This is where we always take our out-of-town guests. Twice in the past 2 weeks we traveled to the Fish River looking forward to the consistently good - above average- seafood. We noticed new menus, then we noticed a significant price increase. We ordered our beverages and meals... service was good during both visits (a Sunday afternoon busy crowd and a weeknight not-so-busy evening.) Sunday's meals were as tasty as always but with the price increase came less food. When this was mentioned as we paid our bill, we were repeatedly told that each serving is weighed.... that was the response to smaller portions. Tonight, our meals were a blackened shrimp poboy and a Greek Salad with grilled shrimp. The salad was pricey but appealed based on what we are used to. What I expected to be a substantial entrée salad was in reality a side salad-sized portion (i.e., small) with 5 large, very salty grilled shrimp. Iceberg lettuce, 2 thin slices of tomato, 2 thin rings of onion, the usual Greek additions (mediocre Feta, pitted olives, tasteless artichoke hearts) and over-salted grilled shrimp. The poboy was tasty but skimpy on the shrimp. The portion sizes of the sides is noticeably smaller - weighing it must mean "smaller." In a community where above-average seafood restaurants are located, I cannot understand why management would impose both substantial price increases PLUS offer smaller portions. One or the other maybe, but both???? Big disappointment. 'nuff said. read more

This is the 3rd time I've been here and as always, great food and happy service! My date and I shared crab claws and the trigger fish (fried), both of which were excellent. I'd like to see a little more seasoning on the crab claws but I stick them in the remi sauce and they're YUMO! I'm usually not big on the typical sides that accompany fried fish but their potatoe salad was different and good....mayo/sour cream based "loaded baked potatoe" style. My date said the slaw was excellent...I don't eat slaw (except on a BBQ sandwich haha). Our waitress was sweet and happy.....very busy Saturday night! read more

Wicked Awesome! (If you're from New England, like me, that is a very good thing.) Service was great and the food was excellent and plentiful. Unfortunately, neither of us had room for desert. We both loved the Hush Puppies. Many restaurants treat Hush Puppies as something to just fill a hole on your plate.
