It's been a minute since I've eaten here. Used to be my old stomping grounds when I worked in the area, but haven't been back in years. I was in the area and had a craving for the cheese balls. 1-25-26 Last night, phone ordered dinner from the airport as our flight from Lihue back to Honolulu was delayed. 20 minutes quoted for a Sumo pizza. I was told only 7 inch since ran out of the 12 inch size. Sure, that's fine. I'd like to order dessert please. The female voice told me what was available and once I heard we have a new one, coconut mochi. I was sold. The 7 inch size was loaded with all the wonderful ingredients of a Sumo pizza, good for one person/ like a personal pan pizza size. Tried the coconut mochi this morning. Probably the first time I didn't immediately devour a dessert. The slice comes in a clear plastic container. I cut it in half to share and marveled at the nice crust edge. The flavor was indeed like a homemade butter mochi made with love. So if you are near the airport, across from Dunkin' Donuts, enter the armed gate. There will always be a special place in my heart for Big Kahuna's Pizza. They used to be in a nondescript wooden bldg off Puuloa road, between Kellys Coffee Shop and 99 Ranch. In those days just one of many faceless wooden bldgs that could easily make you miss them. Keawe trees and nameless wooden bldgs- that location was easy to miss. But now, Whenever we have an airport pick up, Big Kahunas was in the conversation as to what to get on the way home. A while back, they relocated to a strip mall near the airport making it much more convenient to pick up. Their pizzas are not "authentic" but they are oh, so, good. No complaints, it was ridiculously delicious. The thin crust was completely covered with ingredients( too many to list) The only reason we saw cheese is because it was on top. I was a little skeptical about the $26 price tag on a 12" pie. That ended at the 1st bite. I've been eating pizza for more years and in multiple countries than I'd like to admit to. I ate there when they were located on Puuloa St. They gave the Garlic Cheese Balls free, knowing you would get hooked. I became a vegan when my dad had stage 4 cancer 15 years ago. I forgot what I ordered, but I think it had Kalua pig on i and the Pipeline sandwich. My husband ordered online as we were headed to a friends house, our food was hot and ready by the time we got to the restaurant. The service was so quick and the staff was very nice helping us collect our order. We ordered 2 12" pizzas, some of the garlic bread balls, and this dessert fudge item and it was all super unique. I can honestly say I haven't had anything like it. My husband didn't tell me what he ordered originally so I got to blindly taste them and the Kalua pork pizza was my personal favorite, it was super cheesy and the bbq sauce complimented the pork so nicely without over powering it. The Mexican pizza was good with a bit of spice, I was surprised because I didn't know it was a Mexican pizza and it looks like a standard supreme pizza as first glance but it was a nice surprise. We got the garlic bread as well and personally was not my favorite, the flavor was good but the bread balls were pretty inconsonant, some had all the toppings of cheese and garlic and then some of the bottom ones were just soaked in butter. As for the dessert I personally do not like fudge so I did not give it a go but my husband loved it and said he would go out of his way to get just the dessert again. The sizes did not add up (see below) My husband rates this place a 4.5, I rate it a 3.0. It's been about 30 yrs since I last went to Big Kahuna's back when they had a cool little shack-like dive in a parking lot by Mapunapuna, and I remember the Cheesy Balls being super good as well as the food. PARKING: validated parking at the Airport Trade Center. The parking ticket scanner SUCKS but this is not factored into this review. ORDER ONLINE: avoid the walk-in 20 to 30 min wait if you order out. If you join their frequent buyer program for free, you get points where you can get free cheesy balls, or use points for purchase. Checking in on Yelp will get you no perks. EATING IN: small eating area with limited seating, glad I took out. Plus, we like to drink beer while eating our pizza, so we just took out. VALUE: Another one of those places where they ask for a tip out-right when you order. Adding tip plus tax added another $10+ dollars to the order. Tip for takeout, really? Value for food 3.0 rating The small pizzas are supposedly 7 inches. The large pizzas are 12 inches. I measured the small, they are all 6 inches or smaller, the large is 11 inch - I figured the cooked size was smaller than the raw size, so either shrinkage or shrink-flation. I am eating a handful of cashews after eating this pizza as I am still hungry. Unsatisfying. 3.0. Small Mexican Pizza: $9.95, smoked bacon, chorizo, black beans and jalapeno. 4.5 rating. Small Texas Pizza: $9.95, beef brisket, onions and BBQ sauce. 4.5 rating. Big Sumo Special: $23.95, pepperoni, ham, Italian and Portuguese sausage, bacon, kalua pork, onions, tomatoes, black olives, mushroom. 4.5 rating. Cheesy Balls: $6.95 for 7-pieces. Flavorless gobs of dough with flavorless gobs of congealed, solid cheese with a few pieces of dried garlic - not worth re-heating but will dump into trash. Not good at all and I don't see what the hype is all about. 2.0 rating. Total including tax and "tip" - $70.00 (rounded up the $69.00). Not a very good value, in my opinion. My family liked this place better than I did, but for 3 small pizzas, a large pizza and a tasteless glob of dough for more than $1.00 a piece was a deal-breaker. Return factor: them - yes! me - no. I will go back to the tried and true dine-in at JJ Dolan's, Giovanni's, or Boston's. The price for value is too dismal at Big Kahuna's. read more

Wait times are expected because they bake it fresh, so definitely place an order ahead of time. Their dough is so delicious and they make it fresh in-house. It makes the pan pizza unique and savory. We normally get pepperoni but the specialties are yum too. The sandwiches are so good- we've had the California club and the paniolo brisket. The texture of fluffy bread on the inside with a nice toast on the outside. The ingredients are not skimpy and the sandwiches are full of flavor. The large is actually enough for two meals for me but sometimes that bread is too good that I polish it off. The parking is ample and free for two hours. Definitely give them a try.
