I'm genuinely sad writing this because Pizza Mamo has been one of my favorite pizza spots for years. I absolutely loved their Detroit-style pizza (now called the "square" pizza), and it used to be something I looked forward to every visit. The last time I ordered it, it wasn't quite the same, but I thought maybe it was just an off night. Unfortunately, after trying it again, I left even more disappointed. The pizza had very little pepperoni, minimal cheese, and the sauce tasted pasty rather than rich and flavorful like I remembered. What made me so sad is that this wasn't just a slight difference -- it felt like a completely different pizza from the one I used to love. I'm posting this because I truly hope they revisit the recipe or preparation, because this place has been special to me for a long time. read more

WOWOW! This is a 5 star pizza. The Detroit style pizza is incredibly good. Crusty and crunchy on the edges, extremely soft in the middle and the toppings are just as good as you can get here. I got the Pesto/Sausage and yeah the sausage is more like crumbles - like where is the sausage??? But the taste cannot be denied. This is extremely delicious stuff!!!!!! Is it authentic? I don't know and frankly I don't care. It's just so good! It's different from most pizzas here and it is appreciated! If the Detroit style pizza was great, well, so is their Mamo supreme. The thing is, the flavor is so good. I went to Mad Pie a little while ago and I've been thinking about their crust and I do believe Mad Pie's crust might be "better" but overall this pizza is so good and I'd rather these pizzas myself. Came here for the first time for lunch with friends. They had been here before and said that the concept is different now. They don't have slices out on display anymore, but you can still order slices that come from the back! It seemed like everything is being made fresh now. We dined in, and there were a handful of tables to eat at. I just got a slice of the fungi pizza. It came straight from the oven, so the crust was nice and thin and crispy. Not sure if they're under new management or what, but Pizza Mamo is very different than how it was a few years ago. The inside looks like its been completely redone. Counters are nice and new, but the classic pizza window is gone. So we can no longer see the disgruntled employees in the back...if they're still around. Because man, the staff seems completely different and 1000x happier and more pleasant to interact with. Not only are they happy to take your order, they're quick to make suggestions and explain the differences from the old menu to the new. (Looks like they trimmed the fat on the menu and went back to basics)....also the new menu also now has pizzas with listed toppings, not just randomly named pies with no ingredient listing. Pizza is just as good, if not better than I remember. Nice thin, crisp crust, with just enough chew. Not quite NY, not quite NJ...but somewhere around there. Still don't have a soda machine so its bottles or cans if you want anything other than water. The dude behind the counter did somehow make lemonade for my kids. Seemed like he used fresh lemons or at least fresh-ish lemon juice as my son loved it, but my daughter found it to be too sour (quite typical for the two of them tho). The hubby and I dined here on Thursday night. We got here around 6:30pm and another table was dining in. Everyone else got take out. People were consistently coming in and picking up orders. They seem to do a lot of take out. I wanted to try the Detroit Style Sausage & Pesto $30. However, my husband doesn't eat pork and we didn't want to get two pans of pizza. They also sell individual slices on a rotating basis. Bryson was working behind the counter. I asked him if he could make me a Detroit Style with half sausage & pesto with the other half just cheese and red sauce. He obliged and said it wasn't a problem. The pizza came out about 15 minutes later with a slice of Brooklyn Style garlic bomb that we ordered. I loved the sausage & pesto. The sauces were extremely flavored and topped on a thick Detroit crust. All crusts for their pizzas are made in house. When I bit into the garlic bomb, that was it. It was one of the best pizzas ever. It was cheesy with caramelized onions and garlic. Definitely, get the garlic bomb. We had a wonderful time and the pizzas were outstanding. After having a few drinks, my friend decided the best food to grab is some nice slices of pizza. We made our way to Pizza Mamo. From my understanding, this spot makes woodfire oven pizza which has been something I've been wanting to try. My friend got the pepperoni pizza and a browned butter chocolate chip cookie. While we waited for the pie (which took a while but zero complaints here as it was made right then and came out fresh and hot), I tried the cookie. The cookie was solid, but I also love all homemade chocolate chip cookies. The pizza crush was thin and the dough (especially for the crust) had a nice bite to it, a bit "crispy" while being soft and having a nice chew to the dough. If you like/love pepperoni, you would LOVE their pepperoni pizza, I honestly feel like I could barely, if at all, taste the cheese. The oil (therefore the flavor) from the pepperonis over the pizza. The spot is small and leans towards being a grab and go spot. You can dine in but it's all self-service (like a water station with cups and water you can get yourself) with all high top tables. I liked their pizza, and I would totally come back to try something else that may be more my style. They also serve pizza by the slice, but I'm not sure how fresh it is as it does sit there for a while (depending on the turnaround time of each pie ofc). read more

Tourist Here... this place was a great find... it's a hole in the wall with a few tables inside and a small patio out front... we ate in the restaurant but we observe they do a heavy amt of take out... the service was excellent, we were checked on multiple times and each time the refilled our drinks... Food: we tried the garlic knots which are more of garlic pinwheels?? ( shaped and rolled like a cinnamon roll).. neways they were amazing, I wish we had gotten more... then we tried the square pepperoni.. the crust was soo thick and airy with a this like fries cheese layer around the perimeter...can't say we were crazy about the sauce on the pizza, seemed more like a pasta sauce.. but everything was soo good we thought a 4 star wasn't enough for this place... highly recommend read more

We visited this spot in the outskirts of Chinatown to get our pizza fix and we were not disappointed. I so wanted to try their Honeycreeper flavor, but they didn't offer it in slice form! I got the pepperoni, and my boyfriend got the garlic bomb. The crust here is so crispy and thin while also retaining some of that delectable chew. Great spot to grab some NY pizza, I wish I could've stayed longer to give their Detroit pizza and other flavors a try! Nice mellow place to get your pizza fix. We started with the Meatball appetizer. An awesome starter of three meatballs in a delicious marinara sauce. Would have loved it if it came with slices of bread or at least a spoon so we could devour the sauce. We got the Supreme Pizza as our main course. At $33 this LARGE pizza did not disappoint. Thin crust was cooked to perfection and topped with delectable meat and black olives. Our server did an awesome job of answering our questions and serving our needs. My only criticism is the limited selection of beers, but I understand this. Pizza Mamo was so good!!! I love the remodel and the interior looks amazing. I was really impressed with their new look. But most importantly, the pizzas were great. The Garlic Bomb was my favorite dish. I am a garlic girly, so this was perfect for me, and dipping it into the marinara from the meatball dish made it even better. The Detroit-style Honey Creeper was also unlike any other pizza I've had. I enjoyed the mix of spicy and sweet. The meatballs were great for sharing, and their take on a wedge salad with pepperoni was fun and flavorful. Service was quick and efficient, and I liked that water, parmesan, and red pepper flakes were self-serve so you don't have to wait on the servers. The beers on draft were also really good. On my way home from Chinatown, and not having had breakfast, I almost walked by this place for the umpteenth time, when I decided today was the day! I walked inside with my bag of produce, ready to find out what all the hype was about. There were only a few people dining in so I didn't have to wait long to be served. Taylor, the delightful lady who was in the process of putting orders together, greeted me and asked what I wanted to order. I had been looking at the menu and the slices sitting in the warmer right in front of me I asked what the most popular pizzas were and, without hesitation, said "Garlic Bomb" and "Honeycreeper". Both pizzas were in front of me (I had been eyeing the Garlic Bomb) and the Honeycreeper was in the warmer in front of me. I asked Taylor what was inside the Honeycreeper because it was a thick as a slice of lasagna!!! Besides cheddar cheese, there was mozzarella, pickled jalapenos, oregano, hot honey and surrounded by natural casing pepperoni (very crispy, I might add). SOLD!!!! I thanked Taylor profusely for her service and recommendations after she warmed up both pizza slices and I went on my way to my next errand before going home to dive into the slices. The "Garlic Bomb" is a thin-crust pizza, chock full of intense garlic flavor, and after the first bite of the "Honeycreeper" I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!!! The mixed flavors of hot and sweet, combined with the crispy, flavorful outside pepperoni crust was truly amazing. Mamo's Pizza is now my favorite pizza in this entire State. No kidding! read more

Pizza Mamo ? More like Pizza Meh-Mo. I remember trying Mamo when it first opened a few years back. I didn't remember if it was good or bad, so today we thought we'd give it a go. We don't splurge on expensive pizza too often, when we do it's always from IliIli Cash & Carry and we're never disappointed. We hoped this would be the same. Unfortunately the Detroit Style Pesto & Sausage didn't meet the mark. It wasn't bad, was tasty, but in the way you'd find at a Nordstrom Cafe or something. Nothing to go out of your way for. The kicker the pizza is effectively a personal pan. On a hungry day I'd say the average adult could eat more than half of it. Tonight it stretched to feed two people no leftovers. Whereas a pizza at a place like IliIli or Boston's could feed 4 with a bunch of leftovers. Photo to compare the pizza is the size of a hand. Thankfully we weren't feeding a bigger group. Lastly, when checking out, the young man running the register asked me to wait while he figured out how to use it. When he finally helped me out, he flipped the screen asked me to sign quickly, the kicker he pre-selected a tip option instead of letting me pick one myself. Wasn't cool, could have easily tricked someone who was less observant. Automatically clicking a tip on takeout is uncalled for. In the end is this worth the trip to Chinatown, fighting parking for takeout? Not in my opinion. Would I be opposed to eating here if I was in the area? Not if I'm paying. I was craving Jet's Pizza and if you have had them before you understand that their Detroit style deep dish pizza is very special. In Hawaii we do not have many pizza places that serve that style so I was surprised to find Pizza Mamo. After looking at their reviews online this was the best I was going to get. The location is in Chinatown and considering the street they are on, there isn't much parking close to just pop in and pick up and order. It required two people, one to drive and one to get out and grab the order. I ordered three Detroit style pizzas: cheese, sausage and pesto, and what I expressed to the person on the phone was the garlic bomb pizza if they could do it on the Detroit style which she confirmed. We got the pizzas home with still some heat to them. I was a little confused because it looked like two pizzas were the same. We ended up figuring that one was cheese and one was the garlic bomb however it looked nothing like the garlic bomb because it had red sauce all over it which we didn't want because my husband isn't a big fan of tomato sauce pizzas. I was also surprised at how small the pizza was for the price. Overall, this place did help curb my craving for a Detroit style pizza with that thick crust. I wish there was more crunch to ALL the edges and a little less fluff in the middle. It reminded me of eating a Focaccia bread, with a pizza topping. Also wish they had some homemade ranch to dip my pizza in. Too bad we didn't get the garlic bomb without tomato sauce. Pizza Mamo is different from the other pizza places in downtown since they offer the Detroit-style which is a rectangular pizza with more bread. The bread is light with a good amount of tomato sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. For the NY style, the crust is thin and chewy and I enjoy the potato pizza. You can order a whole pizza or purchase them by the slice. They have a limited staff so the wait time to order and for the food can be long. I've been here for lunch and I wish they had more tables for dining in. If you have 2 people, it's easy to get a table or share a table but if you have 3 or more, it might be best to do take out or come by 11:30 am. Everything here is self service so just order at counter, pick a table, get a cup water or buy a drink, wait till they bring you the pizza(s), eat, clean up and trash your items, and leave. When I ordered online for pick up, I parked on Nuuanu Ave and made someone run into the shop to pick up the pizza since there was no street parking available. The closest parking lot with cheap rates would be the Chinatown municipal lot on Maunakea Street between Hotel Street and S. King Street. It's a few blocks over and is safe to walk during the day time but I don't recommended walking alone after it gets dark. read more

I used to really enjoy this place but after going back after their new reconstruction, things just don't feel the same anymore. My favorite flavor- shroom- was so paper thin and slighty burnt, I was disappointed. The garlic bomb pizza was really good however, no issues with flavor or execution. The cashier/ server was super nice, she had stated it was her first day and was trying her best to be as attentive as possible. The issue was another employee, a male, was rude and gave attitude. I tried to redeem an ASB buy local offer. These were the options: $15 Brooklyn Lunch Special* $19 Detroit Lunch Special* $10 off when you spend $50+ So as I came in for dinner, I wanted to use the last offer but the employee just gave me attitude and said "it's for lunchtime it's dinner now" but not sure where the last offer says I have to use it for lunch only. I tried searching it online and even online says I can redeem the offer anytime. So sadly with this experience I don't think I'll come back. read more

Quality of ingredients is excellent - too good for classic Detroit-style pizza, it fact. But it's good pizza, and satisfies the Buddy's and Jet's cravings even if it is not 100% accurate. I have grabbed slices and ordered a whole Detroit-style pizza. My go-to is to order a pizza online, eat half in the restaurant and take the rest home. It reheats well in the oven. I grew up in metro Detroit. This is a high-end take on Detroit-style pizza. It has a good balance of slightly sweet with a slight kick to it. The dough is not greasy at all, so you don't have that gross feeling like you have a tire in your stomach after eating it like Jet's or Buddy's. Pizza Mamo's dough is a little too thick and pillowy. The skin of the crust is too thin and smooth, so it's missing that crunchy, cratered feel and the grease saturating the dough. Classic Detroit style pizza has a dense crust with a thick caramelized layer and lots of grease pockets. That being said, greasy pizza is not healthy for me to eat so I feel less guilty eating here. The slices are about 65% size. I sent a picture to a friend and he said it looked like 2 slices trying to be 6. It's in Chinatown, so you'll need to grab a parking spot and walk a few blocks. read more

Love this pizza here... but the wait on a Saturday evening after putting a phone order for 1x brooklyn pepperoni pie was an hour and a half!! Severely understaffed and the poor guy was running the whole thing. It wouldn't have been as bad if the time the pizza would be ready was overestimated, but in this case, it was very underestimated. Ready almost a full hour after the estimated time, so I was waiting for nearly an hour. Besides the communication, what made the experience worse was having a 2 year old AND my 37-week pregnant wife waiting in the car, on Hotel street, and idling with no parking.
