My date and I went here for a hangover brunch and were pretty underwhelmed. That's saying a lot, considering I'll eat virtually anything after a night of drinking... We split three dishes: the quiche of the day, cornmeal pancakes with pulled pork, and the chicken and waffles (as recommended by our waitress). The quiche was pretty good in taste, and was probably the highlight for us. The fried chicken was definitely under seasoned, and the waffles tasted like someone toasted some Eggos. The pulled pork with cornmeal pancakes just didn't do it for me... and the portion size was huge. All three dishes were lukewarm, which certainly didn't make things better. The worst part was probably the service. My date had to ask another table's waiter to get coffee since our waitress never asked us if we wanted anything to drink. The coffee wasn't very hot, which seems to be a trend with all food items here. Since this place is pretty new, all the staff members seemed to be clueless about recommendations on the menu. The ambience is nice, but I would have preferred an umbrella or two on the patio. The sun was blaring into my eyes, which isn't great when you're dealing with a hangover :-( A few of the other customers seemed like they were struggling with the sun as well. My wife and I came in for the first time since the name change. The decor hasn't changed since it was The Black Pearl and the service hasn't improved. We came in for lunch a little after 1:00 so the lunch crowd was dying down and were seated right away. Our server took our drink order in a timely fashion. The Midwest Manhattan was delicious. My wife ordered the burger with the tomato bisque for a starter. I ordered the cuban with a beet avocado salad as a starter. Our starters arrived ten minutes later. So far, so good. My wife said she's had better tomato bisque but it was okay. My salad was delicious and looked like it might have been from local produce. We finished our starters and waited. And waited. Ten minutes after we finished our server informed me the kitchen was out of pulled pork for the cuban sandwich. We're now at 45 minutes and we're just finding out our entrees have not been started. I ordered the burger as well. At the hour mark our food arrived. We both ordered the burgers medium and they were cooked well done. Well done to the point of dry. The fries were fresh, but in a Five Guys greasy kind of way. We had to request condiments for burgers and fries. We had to request additional water for the table. When we finished eating we had to wait another ten minutes for our check since no one came around to check on us. In all we spent 1:45 minutes for a lunch in a half-empty restaurant. The service was mediocre and the food was nothing special. I'm not sure I'll come back again with so many choices in the surrounding area. I might try the brunch some weekend. read more

Was really excited to hear that Gaia was going to be moving into a larger space previously occupied by Black Pearl, now under the name Yardbird. They've definitely expanded their breakfast menu and offer dinner items as well. It's their second weekend in the new location and after the breakfast experience this morning, I don't know that I would go back. The one saving grace? Service was friendly and efficient. We ordered a French press that came out barely warm, as if it had been sitting for 20 minutes. We ordered the egg sandwich and creamed spinach Benedict, both were disappointing. The egg sandwich comes on a croissant that looked like a Pillsbury crescent roll on steroids, it was not flakey at all and the bottom was pretty well burnt. Ordered it with the sage sausage which lacked salt and was only mildly sage flavored. The eggs were also lacking salt; the pesto seemed to be the only source of flavor on the sandwich. The Benedict was $12; no meat, just a slice of tomato, two poached eggs and puréed spinach (didn't seemed to be creamed as described on the menu). It was also lacking seasoning. Cleanliness didn't seem to be a priority. The bench seating was covered in crumbs where we were seated. It wasn't very busy at 845am and they were just beginning to sweep up the bar area at the entrance; mind you, they open at 7am, one would think this would be taken care of before opening the doors. The bathroom was also in need of some attention - soap was pretty much empty and one roll of nearly spent toilet paper. Certainly did not leave a good impression. read more

My wife and I live in the neighborhood and were excited to see that the former Black Pearl space is back up and running with Yardbird! The menu is breakfast all day and Americana/Southern comfort food. The vibe cozy, muted, modern but not in a stark way. So on to the experience. The staff was wonderful. We were there on a quiet night, and had a trainee and someone more experienced helping us, and both were absolutely nice and helpful. Our starter salad was fresh and yummy. My wife had the chicken pot pie. It was delicious, with a fluffy crust and a thick, savory interior. The size was just right. So far so good. I had the chicken fried steak...and it was pretty terrible. The the breading to steak ratio was out of control, and that breading was sopping in oil. The steak itself was chewy. The consistency and the visual were just not appetizing. Need to get that squared away, as chicken fried steak is a definite comfort food staple. The sides (mashed potato and veggies) were fine, but not outstanding. On a more minor note, I had a martini (I know, weird combo with a chicken fried steak, but you like what you like), and it was overshaken, with a significant layer of ice chards floating atop what was otherwise a fine gin martini. They have a nice herbal house gin. So, knowing Yardbird is new, I'm going easy on them and will give it another go. Just get that chicken fried steak situation under control! read more

I was pretty excited to try this place their menu looked great. I got the fried chicken and at first the breading was burnt but the staff fixed the problem quickly and professionally, but unfortunately my brothers chicken fried steak and my new fried chicken were both underseasoned. Such a fun new spot! We are always looking for good brunch spots especially ones that open early. When I read YardBird opened at 7 am I didn't believe it! So happy to find a place that's delicious and opens so early for those early risers! More importantly the food... did not disappoint!! I stopped by for brunch with 3 friends and my babe. I had been to the restaurant that was previously in this location, Black Pearl many times but it was my first time at Yardbird. The restaurant has the same feel but I like the menu better. There are a lot of options including a huge brunch menu which is available until 9pm. We got bottomless mimosas for $13 each and they weren't stingy at all! I had the cornbread pancakes which came with pulled pork, 2 eggs, and salsa verde. I thought the meal looked delicious and it was a great value but it was a bit bland. I wish the salsa verde was more flavorful or a bit more spicy. One friend got the creamed spinach Benedict which I recommend. It was yummy! We ordered a side of the grits but they were not the texture I'm used too. They looked more like couscous. I was a little skeptical at first due to all the mixed reviews. I had brunch here on a Saturday morning with a party of 6. We were all blown away. Everything was so delicious. The chicken and waffles was killer. I would drink the gravy from a bowl if I could. The Nashville hot chicken bites are legit. The chicken Benedict was also wonderful. The service was great. The drinks were refreshing and the bloody's were spicy!! So so good. I can't wait to bring some girlfriends back here for brunch. Came here for a BOGO in the Denver passbook. Friend and I both opted for the burger. I love bacon and couldn't even eat the candied bacon that came on the burger. I'm not into eating uncooked fat. If you like your bacon thick and limp, you might enjoy it. Friend did the same with hers and the server never asked about it. The burger itself was just ok. The restaurant itself is in a great spot and is enjoyable. Maybe we just selected poorly, but you expect a burger to be a safe bet. This is the perfect addition to Platte Park. The atmosphere is cute and cozy, casual but classy. It's just a pleasant place to be. Our waitress was very good, and I especially appreciate that she was attentive to my husband's dietary restrictions. We went in for a late breakfast. I had an omelette and he had a burger and salad. Both were very good, nothing extraordinary, but well made and just what I was expecting. Although it was a great place for breakfast/lunch, I don't think I would be back for dinner. We've been coming to this restaurant for many years and have come to expect well-prepared food carefully presented. It was a place we took company from out of town for a good breakfast or lunch dining experience. That impression fell quite significantly on our visit late last week. Upon arriving we stood in the doorway for quite a while in an empty restaurant. Voices in conversation came up from the kitchen but no host in sight. Finally someone who appeared to be a busboy came up for some other reason, saw us, and said "anywhere", gesturing to the tables in the room. Our waitperson seemed kind of bored and distracted, but took our orders accurately. They were straightforward eggs and potatoes orders so we didn't expect the long wait it took for the food to come out. While waiting, a french press carafe we ordered came up, a finger-printed stainless steel affair. Finally when the food came up, it was either cold or borderline warm. Apparently it had been done for some time before coming to our table, but apparently didn't have benefit of a heat lamp while the conversation in the kitchen continued. We paid and left as quickly as we could. It wasn't pleasant, and certainly not reminiscent of the homey and friendly place it used to be. Not sure we'll be back. read more

My wife and I had a two-year-old free night so we decided to walk down Pearl to see what was open. After stopping for an IPA at Platt Park Brewing we stopped at Bird for dinner. That was the right decision. We had a wonderful dinner and dessert on the patio while the snow fell. Despite the mid-20s temperature, we were comfortable with the patio heaters (dress like you're on the mountain). Went to this location for Brunch with a lady friend on a Sunday, and I'm so glad we did. We were promptly seated when we walked inside and the bussers/ waitresses were very kind and patient with us as we skimmed the menu. Honestly was blown away by the options that they had available! Eventually we settled for Chicken n Waffles, The Bird Breakfast, and the Sirloin Appetizers. My God, the sirloin appetizers, I wanted so bad to order seconds put found enough self discipline to control myself from doing so. The only thing I was a little disappointed in was that there was no bottomless mimosas, but that's just me being greedy! We really enjoyed our dinner at Yardbird tonight, came in late and they were very attentive but didn't feel rushed. Enjoyed the bahn mi burger --very unique. The veggie curry was excellent as well. Looking forward to trying the pie next. Yardbird is an upscale comfort food. They specialize in fried chicken so we're looking forward to trying that next time. They were out of some items tonight but I think they're still ironing out the kinks because it only opened two months ago. Overall it was a positive experience, will return for more. This place was really good! Great atmosphere and the cocktails were fun and fresh. I highly recommend the crab cakes appetizer, it has a nice kick to it. The marinated avocado salad was good too. We had four people and enjoyed a nice leisurely dinner in a little over an hour which worked well for us. Parking can be a bit challenging but street parking does open up. My friend had the chicken pot pie and said it was awesome, she would order it again. I had the Shrimp and grits and loved it too. You will not be disappointed. The wait staff were friendly and attentive but not too attentive so you could enjoy your time having conversation without being interrupted constantly. They are also open for breakfast so we will definitely be back. The owner has three other restaurants in Denver that are equally as charming and delicious. Okay, woah. Yum. This place is so perfect for breakfast, lunch, and especially brunch. I've gone with friends, with my mom, and with a date; it's perfect for any type of company! Every single time I've eaten here I've been amazed at how good the food tastes and how full I get! Definitely have shamelessly unbuttoned the top button of my pants for a little breathing room... be careful, the meals are pretty big! We started with the brussels sprouts as an appetizer and it was amazing! They were just crunchy enough with bacon bits and pistachios and it was pretty damn filling. Then I got the fried chicken sandwich, but with grilled chicken (because sometimes healthy decisions are a thing!). It was SO good that it actually tasted like fried chicken. The chipotle aioli was to die for and a perfect combination with the lettuce, pickles, and brioche bun. I was full before the sandwich even came out, but I still managed to finish the entire thing (hence the unbuttoning of the pants). So, so, so, so good. Highly recommend. read more

Back in my hometown Denver, so was really looking forward to trying a new restaurant with le squaw. We were quickly seated in a booth, which is tight cause I'm all about the comfort. Ya dig? Sad to say those initial positive impressions quickly changed. Alright, cutting to the chase. Started with a negroni and had to send it back. It tasted like a grapefruit vodka drink- no bueno. Ordered the pot pie and wasn't not feeling it (basically a puff pastry on top of a white gravy with shredded chicken). Taste was bland and lacking the necessary supporting cast of veggies - celery, carrots, mushroom and peas. I MEAN NO PEAS! Peas are essential to my pot pie experience. Homies enjoyed the fried chicken and meatloaf for the most part. Not tryin to bash, just tryin to be real cause I know this spot can do better. Came here for lunch on a Friday. What a lovely little spot! It was not crowded, which was nice. My friend and I split the burger and the Cuban. While the Cuban was good and flavorful, the burger was quite exceptional! It was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. I subbed sweet potato fries and they were crispy and cooked well. Good location, although if going on Sunday for breakfast/lunch during the summer, be prepared to park a ways away (farmers market us going on). The food was good - I had huevos rancheros with green chili instead of red. It was very good. I also ordered a spiked chai (hot), but when it got to the table it was barely even lukewarm (all three were that way). They fixed it within a couple minutes and it was steaming hot, so there's that. They did separate our six checks out and were pretty fast with that, but the rest of the service throughout our brunch was pretty slow. They may have been just really busy from the farmers market, but they should expect that at that time of day by now I would think. Our waitress was very friendly and nice though. Everyone at our table loved the food and the drinks, so if they would just step up the service time a little bit, this would definitely be five stars for me. read more
