I LOVE the Birdcage! One of the best coffee houses in Long Beach! The owner and staff are so friendly, and there's a very chill, comfortable atmosphere both inside and out. Before my wife gave birth to our son last year we would get double espressos. Since he was born our standard order has been triple espressos! So I absolutely adore this place, AND its owners. I live literally a block away, so I guess I'm biased in that regard but it is also right next to the Pacific blue line station and conveniently located in downtown. The coffee is great, they have soy milk and will make soy lattes (important to me) and they do everything with a smile. When you add in the free wifi, quaint, colorful, and downright quirky decor (rainbow flags, frida paintings, lizards on the ceiling AND birds) - it becomes clear this is an inclusive, fun, and artistically inspiring environment. I recommend coming here to write, do homework, or just chat with the other patrons. Outdoor seating comes with ambient fountains and indoor seating is comfortable and well lit. The only possible downside is you have to remember to carry cash. The menu selections have been continually expanding. Definitely recommended! read more

Really cute and charming place with friendly owners, and right around the corner from me. I love having a nice cafe within walking distance that isn't a major chain. We visited within days of their opening, and they were still clearly working out some kinks. But I had a latte, my boyfriend had a mocha. Both were yum. A couple things I hope to see include: 1. It's a little limited at the moment, in terms of drink offerings. Iced coffee would have been nice (and if/when they do offer it, I hope they make it right. It's not hot coffee poured over ice!) 2. Take debit/credit, please! One thing I love is all the cameras they have on the property. It's a Grind on Pine seems to be the latest gathering spot for the hobos and the crazies, and that Birdcage has the cameras makes me think they won't be tolerating that. Woo-woo. I'll probably visit more when the weather cools off, unless they get iced coffee before then! I want them to stick around. read more

This place is fast becoming the place for meeting. It's like the "scene at the coffeehouse" in any sitcom series--regulars and all. The owner is community minded and likes having meetings from book club groups, council organizations--everything. The birdcage's wi-fi saved my bacon this morning. Mexican chocolate & espresso was also great. I also noticed there's going to be sign language class offered there soon. Sorry I don't have details on that but if you go there for coffee I'm sure the very gracious and handsome host will fill you in on that info. I love the atmosphere here! Very welcoming and friendly, patrons chatting with one another, owner circulating and interacting with everybody. The decor is very cute (metal lizards on the ceiling!) and the service is great. We dropped in for coffee this morning after passing it on our way to our favorite neighborhood Mexican restaurant dozens of times. It's a great little coffee shop. We will definitely go back, Coffee was awesome (we are particular) , the ambience was warm and inviting, dog friendly (Bonus, because Betsy assures us that she is people too) and even the patrons greeted us when we entered. We don't mind that it's cash only, since that's the way we roll, but do plan to take cash because the closest ATM is a few blocks away. Next time, I'm ordering the Mexican hot chocolate. I had hours to kill in Long Beach between appointments and needed some wifi. This place provided an then some. The Mexican chocolate was delicious and the ambience is super chill. I think there's a bird somewhere, like a parrot maybe, but it's outside. I guess it makes sense given the name of the joint. Everyone who came in seemed to know the owner and had friendly conversations with him. After I'd been there for a couple hours the owner just gave me a slice of banana bread and some milk. This place is so great. Me and my girl come here at least once a week. She orders there famous Mexican hot chocolate and I'll order a White Chocolate Mocha. Both are so delicious. If we sit and have our drinks there, we'll usually buy one of there delicious cup cake muffins, the owner will usually cut and heat it up for us, at no extra cost to us and places it on a plate and service it to us. This place was very no frills in the best possible way. The place was very casual, with some nice outdoor seating, or plenty of indoor space. It was decorated with a bird theme, which was so crazy but entertaining. I got a blended Mexican chocolate coffee drink, which was amazing! The barista, who was also the cashier and (maybe the owner?) was very knowledgeable about the drinks, and advised me of the difference between two kinds of chocolate coffee drinks...he wasn't wrong. The drink was perfect for a sunny day, with a lot of chocolate mixed in. I also got some mini cinnamon roll bites to share with a friend, which were tasty and not too heavy. Definitely work visiting if you're in Long Beach for a drink. Next time I might try some of the other food choices. read more

The coffee here is pretty good. The place is small and intimate, which I'm not a huge fan of, but I've stopped in to get coffee to go more than once. It's in an OK location, in an area that's been on the up-and-up, but still has a few shady-looking residents. The best place about this coffee house is the service. The owner is delightful and ready to meet the needs of his customers, whatever they may be. The only problem with this place is that it's cash only, which is a problem because I never carry cash (if I do have it, I never know where it went or how I managed to spend it) There's a huge collection of reading material and it seems like there's always a few patrons who would be ready to start up a conversation if you were open to it.
