Pretty funny place. I have been trying to give this place business. Second time I have been here and my order was sent to the wrong table. No big deal I am patient. But then owner who probably has memory issues jokes about it and claims she was busy. (Once fine - second hmm) The place is filled with S Maine hipsters who think this place is cool for some reason..... The food is mediocre at best. The crowd is a bunch of people who wish they were in Portland or Boston. Or make that Cambridge MA. The staff is clueless - Maine style high turnover and probably high - hey I don't judge. Just don't think it's a great place. It's like Cambridge MA prices with Maine low service and quality. Only gave it 3 stars because it's so easy to pick on.....it really deserves 2 stars at best - but people think it's great maybe they need to go to a bigger city. read more

The Bitter End is a sweet, outdoors, pleasant place to enjoy company of friends.. the food is superb... the drink list extensive ... the atmosphere puts you in vacation state of mind!!! Cute, small spot on Route 1 in Wells about 1.7 miles north of the 1/109 intersection where the new police and fire complex is. Shared parking lot and a rustic building appears to have some porch seating, but it's still too cold for that. Upon walking in you are standing in the quaint dining room with a fairly long bar along the back wall ahead of you. We were on the go so burgers it was. Cooked to order it was served on a tasty roll with any fixins desired and accompanied by a side of delicious shoestring style fries and a crunchy pickle spear. We were hoping for a quick burger and we got a tasty one served by a welcoming staff. Wow! Really funky outdoor area. Loved the whole outdoor space but we were then brought to a picnic table after a 1/2 hour wait. We were a little disappointed to have too sit there but we did because there was no other option except for indoors.The Fatoush app was ok but the Brussels sprout appetizer was disappointing. Cooked well but sitting in probably just soy sauce.They we're very salty.The 9 hour bolognese was ok but the meat was a little dry. I could have made it better at home in a 1/2 an hour. The Seafood entree with the lemon buerre blanc was ok but the mashed potatoes it came with were tasteless. Another friend had the Chicken sliders. They were over fried chicken on roll with an overly spicy sauce and a little lettuce. We were hoping to have a really good meal that night based on the atmosphere and menu but did not. Stopped at the Bitter End Thursday for lunch. Indoor and outdoor dining choices, we ate inside. Really cool sports memorabilia inside around the bar and tables. Friendly efficient waitstaff. I had fish and chips my wife had taquitos . All excellent. Seafood is dominant but lots of choices. There's a good size outside seating area with a heavy nautical theme and a stage for bands in the spring/summer. I'm guessing this place is a blast in the summer. Indoor and outdoor bars. A friend and I thought Bitter End was terrific. We went for lunch today. I had the fried clams with hand-cut fries. The clams were small, tender, sweet and delicious. The remoulade that was served with them was extraordinary -- so much better than your typical tartar sauce. The fries were excellent. My friend raved about the crab cakes. She had the blueberry tart with caramel sauce and whipped cream for dessert. She rolled her eyes over how delicious it was and said that on a scale of 1-10, she'd give it a 10. We are here last summer and loved it. Couldn't wait to come back with the whole family. When we arrived we were told we had to go to the hostess stand which was outside in the rain. Someone eventually came to the stand but said she had to get the hostess so we walked inside out of the rain. Because there were 10 of us they said we couldn't sit in the area we requested where the bar was. Michelle, the hostess attempted to put us at 2 separate tables in the back dark corner. I then said why can't we sit in the other area. I told her one thing we liked about the restaurant before was the "memorabilia" she reluctantly said we could sit 6 and 4. She then told us in a sarcastic tone of voice. " Now you can can have your memorabilia". This set the tone for a horrible experience. Our waiter was nice enough. My husband ordered a Caesar salad w/ his dinner. We asked for dressing on the side. It came with no dressing , had to flag down the waiter to get us some. I ordered a Caesar salad with grilled chicken for my meal. It came with maybe 3 oz of chicken and no cheese. I sent it back not to reorder at this point I was exasperated. The bolognese was very good, 4 orders of that for $104, not cheap. The waiter gave us a dessert for our issues. I asked for the bill for both tables. The initial bill had someone else's bill on it . We saw Michelle on the way out. I told her how I felt she was very rude when we arrived. She said they do not accommodate parties of 10 "our kitchen can't handle it." Why could't she have told us that from the start? She continued to be rude. Needless to say we will never come back and this was the "Bitter End " to this place. A group of 8 of us decided to try Bitterend while they were having a band for entertainment. We were placed at a picnic table and started with drinks . After we ordered a second round of drinks, we also ordered apps. The waitress kept asking us if we wanted to order and we kept saying we weren't ready. Then the hostess came over and said, by the way, we have an hour and a half only policy on the tables. We were stunned. First of all, no one told us that before we sat down. And second, it's not like we weren't spending lots of money between the 8 of us. After ordering dinner our bill was well over $400+ tip. Then to top things off, a woman with 4 kids came up to us and asked how much longer we will be because the hostess said she has this table next. That was beyond rude. We got there at 4pm, because the band didn't start until 5. So I know we were done slightly after the band had started,( which they did not start until 5:15 ) So we got up from our table about 5:30. We were all appalled at the treatment and service we got. The waitress was very unfriendly. Now, we aren't tourists. We are locals and know the owners. We did not try to cause a scene and complain but they will hear about how they ruined our night. Lots of comments are about being kind to the servers and being patient with the restaurants when they are busy. We totally get that. And we are the best customers you could have . But we do not put up with rude service at these prices. read more

I just went for the first time after 3 years in town. Ordered the scallops for $30 sounded good. The plate came 3 scallops small pile of smashed potatoes and a couple of leafs of Bok Choy. I get it things have gone up but $10/ Scallop. Service was very below average too had a dirty app plate but never had a chance to even ask for a new one. Basically took our order served us and pushed us out the door. Almost $120 and we left hungry and didn't even enjoy it. Save your money I'll leave it that. read more

Lovely place. From the staff to the food. The hostess was very friendly, our server was nice and prompt. She took great care of us. We came for lunch and got a couple of local brews which were fantastic. The Maine beer company peeper ale is delicious. I got the autumn session ipa which is nice as well. For food we ordered the soup of the day which was a chorizo and kale soup, along with the Thai brussel sprouts (unreal) and the fish and chips. The fish and chips were perfect. This place is a gem. I've been coming to Maine for the past 3 summers now and every time I go I like to look for local eats. I hadn't heard of this place until today and I'm so glad I tried it out. The place is quite small but not in a bad way. It feels like a cozy little home. The back patio is really beautiful, the little twinkling lights and 3 large trees are really the selling points of the backyard decor. Not only that but the food is also delicious. Also this place is pet friendly, I was able to bring my two little pups and they were welcomed with open arms. The pulled pork (or as they like to call it; the pulled pig) sandwich was so tender that the meat basically fell apart in your mouth. The bbq sauce that was blended in with the meat was slightly sweet and a little bit spicy, it wasn't lacking flavor at all. I got the blueberry crumble for dessert which I'm pretty sure was homemade. It was warm and tasted like it came right out of the oven, not like some other desserts that claim to be homemade but end up just warmed up in a microwave. This place truly focuses on the quality of their food, like care is put into every bite. The owners of this business should be proud. Very excited to share our experience at this restaurant. The burger is very good and very juicy. The onion strings are something we aim to order each time we visit and highly suggest anyone do the same. If I could offer two suggestions, I would like to see more local breweries bringing in their products and the hand cut French fries presented on a better stage than under the hamburger I ordered. Had dinner with friends who were returning for a second visit. It's a relatively small establishment with a decent sized bar and rough hewn tables for a country feel. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the Ramp in Cape Porpoise. Menu is good and not overly long, and the three dinners we ordered (burger, fried chicken, shrimp and salmon) were all done well. This food here was so good. We only had apps, which was the truffle fries and the Brussels sprouts, but the flavoring was spot on especially with the Brussels sprouts. I wish I could eat more right now. The space outside is so cool and definitely a treat to enjoy while we were waiting for our table. I would recommend sitting at a table and not the bar. The bartender seemed like either she was having a really bad day or she just hates her job. Not very welcoming for us to stay and relax and she even down talked one of their signature drinks saying that it wasn't that good. Kind of odd. The name perfectly describes our experience at the end of an otherwise very nice weekend in Maine. We waited one hour for our Seafood Mixed Grill that consisted of one (1) scallop, one (1) shrimp, one (1) small piece of salmon and a cup of meshed potatoes. While it tasted ok portion size is MUCH smaller then at other restaurants we dined at while the price is actually higher. Oh, and I had to ask for clean silverware, too. What a gem of a place! We have two young daughters- 2 and 5 months and we don't get out much! Stumbled about this warm, welcoming and very laid back restaurant on a Saturday evening recently. We were seated outside with ample Space for our toddler to run around and let loose safely! We had the mussels to share and then I ordered the seafood mix grill. My husband and I started coming here in August when we moved to Wells from Boston. We are used to amazing food options with top notch quality from Boston so we were really hoping to find a place that felt like home. Boy, did we find the right place!! The food is outstanding - and I am a tough judge. We have dined here about 10 times and each time we are more impressed than we were with the last visit. The service is excellent and friendly and we always gave a great time. The patrons who visit are happy too we usually end up meeting new friends each time we visit.
