I've been in to Black Bear many times over the years and have always had good service. This is the ki d of place you go to relax after a long hike, not for those in a rush. The pretzels here are amazing. We've always simply grabbed a seat at the bar and within minutes have a nice cold pint of one of their many beer choices. This place sure changed, since our first visit. The only reason I gave it 3 stars, is because of the bartender. He was great. The waitress was a no show that day, so he was doing everything. Doesn't have a good selection of beer to choose from. The food menu is small and seasonal but yet it's on the permanent menu. The chicken quesadilla tasted like it was made with Tyson frozen chicken, and the grilled cheese was sub par. Hardly no one was in the bar when we had arrived, and we waited over 30 minutes for our food, and another 30 for our check after we finished. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was friendly and extremely helpful when offering menu suggestions. They were out of a couple of beers due to distribution issues during this time (several other places we visited in this area were also out of items due to the same reason), but it was no fault of the establishment. The food was delicious!!! Our group ordered the pork nachos--and they were huge! We also had the Reuben, fried bologna sandwich, and the Philly cheese steak special. There we were, in Blue Ridge for a girls weekend. Spirits and expectations were at an all time high. Riding this wave, we decided to hit the town and wet our whistles. We stumbled upon Black Bear "Bier" Garden, where we decided to pop in for a quick brew and a bite. At the front of the restaurant, there was a big sign that read "Husband Day Care." We should have known better than to continue, but you live and you learn. We received our menus which had a very limited selection, which was further limited by the fact that they were out of almost everything. Our waitress was nice, but when asked for her opinion, she revealed to us she didn't even drink beer. She then proceeded to compare a German craft beer to Bud Light. When ordering food, service was speedy, but the "beer cheese" by that accompanied the pretzel was straight up velveeta. As if this was not unsettling enough, when inquiring about the size of the pretzel, due to the size of our group, we were told we would need an additional beer cheese (at an additional cost). When our average size, over-salted pretzel arrived, it was abundantly clear we did not need the additional "cheese" we had just been sold. The inside of the restaurant was clean and the AC was kickin, however not a single soul entered the establishment save the jarring, lingering locals. Overall, if you are in desperate need of a chilled place to sit down, drink a free cup of water, a beer you could get literally anywhere, and an overpriced snack, this is the spot for you. Not the worst dining experience I've had, but perhaps consider the local Ingles for a more diverse selection and economically sound purchase. read more

Two stars because the food is pretty good, but service is downright embarrassing. We waited 40 minutes just for our check after asking for it twice. There are much better options in Blue Ridge, so don't waste time here especially if you want to do other things. Good local beer choices, cole slaw and red cabbage were ok, but the sandwiches were a disappointment. On the menu the pot roast sandwich came with provalone cheese. When it came to the table, however, it had kraft singles on it. What a shame, the pot roast was ruined by the artificial cheese product. We also tried the bbq pork sandwich. I had to ask the server for a refill twice, the server didn't even bring my date his dinner, my friend had to ask multiple times for water....the food was undercooked, oily, bland, and the server hardly checked on any of us. Would not recommend this place to anyone. I would rather eat at McDonald's. The "taco" did not even look like a taco. Just Texas Toast with coleslaw and a slab of meat. Stopped in at 6pm and thought we'd give it a try despite the reviews. Walked in and the place was empty. Walked back to the bar and a crabby ole gal stated she closes her kitchen at 4:00pm so we went over to the Masseria down the plaza. There was no mention of kitchen closing early on the site despite being open till 10pm. read more

Beer selection was pretty modest and didn't include any of my personal German favs. Some homemade mustard would have been a nice touch. We are city people from Atlanta and came to get away for a few days. We didn't really want to get crazy so we just looked for something easy and close. As soon as we walked in the atmosphere was perfect. First thing the bartender did was offer us a local beer. I'm usually one to not steer outside my comfort zone for beer but let me tell you, this girl knew exactly what to recommend. Grumpy Man Hell's porter. I inquired as to how I can find some to take home with us since we can't find it anywhere that's open. (FYI everything closes VERY early around here.) The owner was quick to offer a growler and we quickly obliged. We have friends coming up this coming weekend and have already told them to stop here! Stopped in for a beer and a bite on a Sunday afternoon. Not crowded sat at the bar with two friends. Asked for a menu and ordered beers. Bartender was not friendly at all, in fact rude. Brought us our beers and a menu but never came back to ask what we wanted to order. Walked past us several times and didn't even look at us. We felt so unwelcome we decided not to order food. After getting the tab and leaving her a more than generous tip we said thank you and goodbye and she didn't even turn around. With her back to us she said "bye".
