Pretty average American brunch affair with so-so food but I don't hate it. The person serving us was by far the best part about our meal, as well as the cozy ambience. Refilled coffee and water like a machine; thanks for a great service! Food-wise, their menu consists of all the possible permutations of eggs, carbs, and meat. We got the Two Eggs Combo and the Bear's Choice which were both a decent 1-person serving portion; you won't leave this place hungry. My waffle did taste more like a pancake, not in a bad way just a little dense and buttermilky, but it definitely could have been crispier. Chicken sausages, which were apparently new to the menu, were inconsistently prepped and had a chemically aftertaste but somewhat of a spice kick to them. They're very generous with their hash brown portion and their biscuit is as big as it gets. Again, not super impressionable and won't be rushing to come back anytime soon but don't regret giving this establishment a try either. read more

Stopped by for my free birthday breakfast on a Sunday morning. They were very busy with the after church crowd. The took our phone number and called us when our table was ready allowing us to sit in our car. A definite plus. I tried their house made Italian sausage with a couple of over easy eggs. The eggs were done perfectly and the sausage was nice and spicy, maybe a little too spicy for some people. But I liked the sausage and would order it again. They appear to have changed their biscuits for the better. Todays we're smaller, but still plenty adequate, and moister than their larger cousins. Enjoyed the breakfast and great service. read more

We wanted to take our elderly family member out for a holiday meal on Thanksgiving. After searching, we discovered that Black Bear Diner would be open and serving a holiday meal. We had a great meal on Thanksgiving, and went back again on Christmas Day 2024. The food was delicious, hot, and portions were just right. The price was reasonable too. But what was really great was the service, the people, and the smiles from all the staff. They were very polite, pleasant, and helpful. Not a grumpy person among them, or complaining about working on a major Holiday! We are so thankful that Black Bear Diner is open on holidays. First time at this diner & in Oregon! I absolutely loved the woodsy appearance. Very fitting and definitely creates a nice, cozy feel. I was pleasantly surprised with the generous portions of each plate. Our food came out at a reasonable time which was appreciated since we arrived very ready for breakfast! Everyone was spaced out appropriately and hand sanitizer was provided at the entrance. My only complaint would be that we had to wait longer than we were told due to never receiving a text about our table being ready. I came in to pick up food and 8 different employees walked by me without acknowledging me, without welcoming me, and without asking me if I've been helped. Solid diner food, with huge portions that won't break the bank. I'm not a huge fan of diners and thought my biscuits and gravy was mediocre. If you're looking for a spot to take picky American eaters, this a good spot as there is an option for everything. Decent, not great, but you won't be mad as the portions are enormous. I had dropped my car off at the local VW dealership, and was looking for some lunch. It was a random chance that I walked into Black Bear Diner, but it was definitely a happy accident. I sat at the bar and was immediately waited on. The service was quick and kind, and I was checked on a couple of times during my stay. I ordered the chicken strip basket which was good (a lot of fries, enough to share with someone else), though the strips themselves were over-fried, and a little dry. That said, it was well priced diner fair, and the pies looked wonderful (though sadly I did not partake). If you're looking for some hearty diner fair and you find yourself waiting on service for your Porsche 911 next door (do Porsche drivers eat diner food? The food is pretty good, my rating is more about the service. We waited up front for almost 10 minutes until someone said "how many?". Then we got sat at a table and waited almost another 10 minutes until someone said "you ready?". Neither time were we actually greeted. If you think of it as just a sit down fast food place, I guess the service is on par. The difference is I am not expected to tip at a fast food restaurant. A-MA-ZING Keep in mind my family and me are infatuated with this place. SERVICE: The BEST! We came in at 10 AM and it was *packed* so we got checked in with a pager in about 45 SECONDS. About 10 minutes later the pager went off and we were off to our table! Needless to say the waiter was extremely polite and attentive. CHILDREN: I couldn't help to notice that the children got a *NEW* FULL pack of crayons! When we go to any other place they get about 2 or 3 used crayons and they don't have all colors. The servings for children are rather LARGE but if you have any kids you'll sympathize with me in that they eat like pro football players occasionally. FOOD: There's just quality in every bite. We found out today that the reason why the orange juice is so TASTY is because they're squeezing FRESH oranges right there and then! And you must try the mashed potatoes, they're DELICIOUS! As I'd joined the Black Bear diner club I had a coupon for a free bear claw and coffee. It was very tasty! And big! We'd also ordered 2 eggs with hash browns. These arrived perfectly cooked with a huge biscuit. All of the above earned 4 stars, but add in the perfect service from Tiffani and now there are 5 stars! I'd hesitated on this for years before finally trying it. And yeah, I was influenced by these reviews. Finally took partner there. Short version: we will be going back. First of all, you should anticipate enormous portions. Partner's chicken fried steak, salad, and whatever else they had were a ton. Me? I could barely eat all my fish and didn't even make a dent in the cole slaw, fries, etc. In terms of quantity for the price, they are laying it on. My guidance would be to look over the menu items with an eye toward what you could take home as leftovers, because you're gonna unless you're a college football defensive tackle or something (in which case this is the only non-all-you-can-eat place that's going to fill you up). What surprised us was how good the food was. The fish had nicely crisp breading, hot but not lose-a-layer-of-gum-skin hot, plentiful and very good tartar. Partner liked their gravy, steak, and mashed potatoes very well--even felt the ranch was very good. Service attentive without being intrusive; friendly, pleasant. The ambiance was calm, mostly anyway, except for the loud chatter in Spanish around the pass. I think that maybe they do not realize that some of us Anglos understand the language, especially certain words. (I'm not offended, but let's put it this way: I definitely wouldn't use those words in my workplace.) Most of these diner chains are mediocrities that trade on the common fallacy that diners have the best food. Usually they don't even have very good food; that's the ugly reality. With a family breakfast for a large group, the Black Bear Diner was able to take care of our whole group with hot fast breakfasts, coffee cups always filled, great friendly service, and feeling comfortable and not rushed. We had everything from the Blackberry Bearclaw French Toast, Biscuits and Gravy, Skillet Bowls, the Volcano special, and of course pancakes. There are nearly no redeeming qualities. First of all, I ordered my eggs over-medium, and they showed up less than over easy. As soon as I cut into them, a clear liquid (raw egg white) consumed them and took over, making for soggy and wet eggs. I couldn't eat them. The chicken fried steak has little to no flavor, just a lot of salt. The breading tastes like it was fried in old oil, giving a slightly rancid flavor. The hashbrowns are just strange. They are crispy only at the top, and soggy throughout. It seems like they only cook one side and just slop it onto the plate.
