Came for my birthday and huge disappointment. The famous big bear burger is smaller than before, they didn't have any fries, tater tots, or even onion rings. Had to settle for a side of chili that was mostly beans and no chili meat to be seen. Wife had the salmon and I guess it's changed as well. No side salad, or corn bread. One of my favorite places to eat when I visit Portland! I am from Southern California and do not have one near me so this is one of my happy places in Portland. We ordered the Western Burger, french toast with a side of hashbrowns and the BTL sandwich combo. Everything looked and smelled so good! The portions are always above and beyond which I appreciate because I have a snack for later lol. My favorite part was the bacon had the perfect crisp. That salty savory flavor paired up with the mayo on the sourdough bread is heaven to me. The French toast was my second favorite. I'm really sad about this review. I used to eat here all the time as a kid with my family. My husband and I went here for my birthday last month and the waitress was very cold and borderline rude, but I brushed it off since they were really busy. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and they were bland and completely cold in the middle. Today we decided to try to give it another shot since they were less busy. We went with some friends for breakfast. The waitress was very nice. But the food was terrible. I had the eggs Benedict and nothing was seasoned at all. Every single other person at the table had the exact same issue, no seasoning. Also, one of our friends had the biscuits and gravy and theirs came to the table cold, which tells me they don't make them fresh since this was first thing in the morning. We went to this Black Bear diner for a weekend breakfast. Our waitress was excellent, and the ambiance was what we expected at a Black Bear diner (not over-crowded, not noisy). But this was the worst Black Bear diner meal I've ever had. I ordered the eggs Benedict, with hash browns. It came at room temperature, and is the first breakfast I've ever sent back. The waitress apologized twice for how long the kitchen was taking for the replacement. When it came, it was hot, but flavorless. There was zero lemon flavor in the Hollandaise sauce, and the entire meal seemed made without any seasoning whatsoever. (Plus the second plate had no fruit; I did not complain.) My breakfast companion had an omelette with hash browns; his meal was hot, but "just OK." The kitchen at this location is sub-par, and we will go elsewhere for breakfast. read more

there's a lot to recommend this place. They have a huge menu of American breakfast food and serve generous portions, in a kitschy interior of bear-themed decor. Usually we're pretty satisfied, but yesterday we were disappointed that they were out four menu items members of our party requested. read more

Okay... So this place is very cheesy. Though it's cheesy, it's earned a right to be. The wait time is pretty hefty, but very worth it. The waiters and waitresses are very nice, and always make sure to check on you (which I know can be hard to do when you have people everywhere). The service was promt and well as the food. Came in around 10:30 and boy let me tell you- the Sunday brunch rush is no joke. We were told a 30 minute wait which wasn't that bad. Got seated a little shy of thirty and our server was very kind and helpful. We got served pretty quickly for them being so busy. Overall restaurant is kid friendly, with a little gift shop with tee shirts, toy bears, etc - keeps kids busy while waiting. Food itself was delicious. Ordered the tuna melt with fries. Also another thing to note is their plates are HUGE. So come with an appetite. Lots of menu options and they also served lunch when we were there so that was nice. I've had their breakfast before too and it's pretty solid. Ambiance was good, a little loud considering how busy they were but we could still have conversations. My first time at this chain. My server gave me a free sample of their fresh squeezed orange juice. Tasty. Had the California omelette with mushrooms, avocado and Swiss. The omelette was fluffy, nicely stuffed. The mushrooms were white buttons that had been sautéed and had a touch of carmelization to them. The ribbon shredded home fries had a nice golden crust to them and a reasonably fresh potato flavor. On the down side, their coffee was pretty insipid to my taste--somewhat watery and lacking much coffee flavor. $16 with tip All in all, it was a fine breakfast and I'd consider revisiting when I am in the area. I love this place. I don't care what anyone says. Never had bad service here - no matter how busy. Never had a bad meal. Their biscuits are huge, but rather bland. However, with the gravy they're pretty darn good. They make their THICK bacon the way I like it. Nice and crispy. I usually don't like country fried steak because it's chewy or the breading is all wrong, but I absolutely loved it here. They have fresh orange juice, an awesome selection of stash teas, and their coffee is kickin'. This is my favorite nearby-ish breakfast spot. And please try the bread pudding. read more

This is the worst restaurant I've been to in my entire life. I ordered one of their standard breakfast platters (I think it was called the Grizz Platter or something). Which came with a piece of ham, 2 sausage & bacon, 3 eggs, and country red potatoes (side of pancakes). Review of each: 1. Eggs - similar to multiple reviews I've now read on here, the eggs came RAW. I ordered over medium and somehow they came to me half cooked. Completely translucent egg white top and the yolk was not gooey like a properly cooked yolk, it just spilled out like a soup and covered my entire plate. At that point, just serve it as a soup. That was actually ridiculous. It was, also, bland and cold to top it off which is hilarious. 1/10 2. The sausage is well spiced and very flavorful with a great bite. BUT it came out nearing ice cold. 6.5/10 3. The ham was a bit sour the more I ate it but I wouldn't complain about it, overall. Also came out cold. 6/10 4. Country potatoes... the first thing I tried, and they were one of the most disgusting foods I've been served in my life. They had this taste of rancid, old oil or gasoline. Imagine the smell of gasoline you use for a stove. But now that is turned into a strong flavor in your potato hash. Also, they were UNDERCOOKED; hard in the middle. With absolutely no taste of seasoning whatsoever. And yet the most confusing part beyond the vomit-inducing taste, is that THEY WERE BURNT. SOMEONE TELL ME HOW YOU BURNT THESE AND YET THEYRE RAW? Turn the f*cking heat down on your stove. 0.5/10 5. The pancakes flavor wise were not the worst but significantly worse than places even the level of Denny's. Which are mediocre as f*ck. The amount of flour they used for their mix must have been 2x what is good because it even smelled heavy of RAW FLOUR. And when I tasted it, the inside was basically half-done and had the consistency of raw bread dough... Probably one of the more "ok" items but definitely subpar and gross regardless. 5/10 Now a couple of things about the experience beyond the food. We waited about 30 minutes during a rush which isn't ridiculous. Got seated and the waitress was attentive for the most part (about as much as you need). But then we waited 25+ minutes for the food to arrive. Which, even in a busier restaurant, is a typically long wait time. Especially for the type of food they're making. But then the even worse problem is that the long wait came with COLD FOOD? How does that make sense??? I don't mind longer waits even if it doesn't make sense. As long as the food is up to par. I'm a very low maintenance eater. I'll eat basically anything as long as it doesn't taste bad. My motto for most food is that if it doesn't taste bad, it tastes good enough to eat. But I'm, also, not a medially brain dead trash bag like 90% of the clientele I saw at the restaurant who just stuff their gullets and would drink motor oil if it was presented over a stack of half cooked flour plate figurines. And I've never had a place where the food was disgusting to me. But holy sh*t I feel scammed it was that bad. Nothing redeemable whatsoever. I'm seeing that this place is a local chain? And that's the problem when you hire negligent management, who hire negligent employees. Because my girlfriend's food was cooked fine. The potatoes probably taste bad because they were cooked in old, burnt oil when they're not supposed to be. The eggs cooked poorly because you don't have actual fucking cooks back there. They're likely people who are literally incapable of cooking for themselves at home. Just like a place like Red Robin, etc. But the difference at a place like IHOP and this type of smaller chain, is that they've automized their standards, recipes, and methods to where no one can mess it up. Similar to McDonalds. I bet If I ordered again or at a different location, I could probably get some decent food. The prices aren't horrendous, not great. Reasonable if the food was good because the portions are fairly big. So basically I'd say the food is confidently horrendous but it may vary depending on location and who cooks. read more

It speaks volumes when you reach out to customer service about a really bad meal and they can't even bother to respond. We have eaten at this place more times than I can count. Usually, it's good. But about a week or so ago, we ordered dinner and it was AWFUL. It wasn't even consistent ingredients from the last time an item was ordered! So after pointing out that it was normally good, and I didn't understand how it could be so bad, I let them know the specific issues. Crickets. So- Heads up, the taco salad may or may not have beans when you order it. And stay away from the overpriced ribs, you get about four ribs that taste like ham and have the texture of mush for $20. We also paid their criminal $9 a slice for two pieces of carrot cake, that normally I love, but this time tasted like plastic. I will never spend another penny in that restaurant. Come here with an appetite! Big portions of food for one and all. I was very much pleased with the decor of the interior as well as the monster food proportions that were served. The menu offers a very good value in terms of food quality vs. price. Plenty of seating both at the booths by the front entrance, main dining area, and bar area. The customer service is very, very good. If I had one complaint, it would be of the parking situation. There seems to be enough yet there is a spillover from the hotel next door to the restaurant parking. The hotel notes that it will tow cars for violators, which I understand. There needs to be clear signage where the hotel parking area ends and the restaurant parking area begins. Other than that, one pretty good venue that I'll certainly return to next time. read more

Had a couple of hours to kill this morning waiting for my daughter so I decided to try this place for breakfast, bad idea! You really have to work at it to screw up bacon and eggs this much. The place looks ok, a little shabby and cluttered but ok. I didn't want any thing too much just a standard breakfast of bacon and eggs with hash browns and toast. I asked for the eggs to be over medium and the bacon to be crisp which the waiter repeated and seemed to write down. The food was delivered very fast which was a surprise, he put the plate down without comment and left immediately. The eggs were not even cooked, the whites were runny and clear and the yolk was cold. One piece of bacon was cooked enough to eat the other 3 were barely cooked. The toast was fine and the hash browns were tasty but cold. I never saw my server again so could not show him the plate. I ate some of the potato and the one piece of bacon and stirred the eggs a bit but could not really eat them. Finally he came back and asked if I was done as he pulled the plate off the table, I tried to tell him about the food but he was gone again. Black Bear has a pretty good birthday club, free breakfast meal and all, and so my wife and I headed over. She prefers breakfast food, so she got the pancakes and I ordered a bacon cheeseburger. I'm allergic to onions and don't like thousand island dressing, so ordered the burger without. First the clam chowder came out and it was pretty good. I'm a big fan of the clam chowder and I'll give this a real thumbs up. The burger came out with onions and dressing, so that was disappointing. (And I had experienced this problem here before.) I sent it back to be fixed, and in the meantime the server brought me another cup of soup for free, so that was okay. My wife loves their pancakes, so still a net win. The replacement burger took an age, and the server checked back a few times, apologetically. When it did finally come the bacon was missing and it was super well done- edible but just barely. The server took it off the bill. Disappointing to never really get the burger I wanted, but the servers were so nice and the soup was good enough that we were content. Just finished breakfast at Black Bear Diner. I usually go to the Wilsonville location where customers are spoiled rotten. Tried the Gresham location last week for dinner and received the same excellent customer service. Today was not the same. After being seated the waitress took my order but was in SUCH a big hurry she was literally taking the menu out of my hands as I was ordering. I told her I had not decided to order hot tea or orange juice with my breakfast but would let her know. But I said the most important part of my meal will be a tall container of piping hot, scalding syrup. Another server brought 1/2 of my breakfast and said he would bring the pancakes out in a minute. Then another server brought the plate of pancakes with two tiny cold containers of syrup on the side. So I am sitting with no tea and cold syrup. I never saw my waitress again so I asked the kitchen for hot syrup and tea. Yet another server brought warm syrup and still no tea. Half way through my meal my original waitress drops a plate with hot water, honey and 2 types of tea. (Oh, and a Coke I never ordered) Lipton and some other brand of peppermint. I was never asked what type of tea I wanted but rest assured peppermint and Lipton would not be on that list. The waitress never asked how my meal was or if I needed anything. Yet when I stood up to leave her attentive meter was off the charts. The bill placed on my table. I know I am a single person but I deserve the same customer service as a 4 top and probably tip better.
