Stopped by for coffee and dessert which were both fine. Service on the other hand, needs serious attention as it oozes the perception of unhappy servers and the cashier on my visit. How did I arrive to this conclusion you may ask? Simply by visiting them and experiencing how they treat customers. When we arrived, we were immediately greeted and seated at the two person table that's closest to the dessert display. The cashier area is right there too. Please see pic. From this vantage point not only could I observe where they disappear to, but also hear their interactions with other customers. Once seated, our server came by pretty quick and took our order. We were just having coffee and dessert, so easy order taking there. Few mins later she comes back with our order, and then a Ninja smoke bomb went off, and she disappeared on us to where I believe was her break room. Gone for 30 mins. During the disappearance, we would of like to had refills on the coffee and thought about ordering a couple of other things to take home, but by the time she came back and asked if we wanted anything else, I just asked for the bill please. She came back with the bill, and that was the last time we saw her as she walked to the back area behind the counter. Let me back up a little and share some of my observations of that evening. As I'm dusting the Ninja smoke bomb dust off of me and wondering where our server went, I pondered if I should come up with a virtual Tik Tok missing persons milk carton campaign, but figured out quite quickly, that I didn't have a pic of her, nor did I know her name. Had to scrap that idea instantly and decided to wait it out. During my wait for our server to come back, I was able to hear the cashier interact with customers as they pay and deflect complaints with a few well rehearsed phrases. She didn't miss a beat. Two customers, unrelated had issues with their food. One gentleman was not pleased with his fries. He stated the fries were undercooked. The other customer complained about another food item that was, as he stated, "not cooked all the way." Those two customers got the, "that's the first time, I've ever heard that," from the cashier as her response. Another customer had service issues and was not easy to brush off as the first two she interacted with, and once she realized that customer was not going away, she threw out her next repeated phrase which I did hear her use twice as well, and that was, "well, I'm not the manager". She didn't offer to get a manager on any of these situations, but another server who I can just describe as a gal with tattoos, heard the commotion, walked over and took care of the situation. She was professional and I could tell by her body language that she's probably tired of picking up the slack for some of the other employees there. Don't know her, or her name, just the gal with the tats on her arms. If you're reading this, kudos to you and I hope the owners read this review and help clean up some of the service issues and you get a break from picking up the slack. Lots of people won't go out of their way to bring issues up. They just stop coming. I hope you guys are about customer retention and find my review informative regarding how customers are being treated. read more

Haven't been to a diner in so long and I see SO MANY Black Bear Diners around OC. Decided to try it for brunch today and was lucky to be seated without a wait around 1030a. The restaurant was already packed by the time we were seated and by the time we left, there was a long wait and many groups to be seated. Ordered the Californian omelet and instead of biscuit, asked for a pancake (good choice; the pancake was so fluffy and delish) with country potatoes. The banana cream pie was good but the crust was a bit mushy to my liking and the pie seemed too watery in the center with way too much whipped cream on top for my liking. I want to try their dutch apple pie next time. Food is better than your typical diner and everything : 2 omelets + pie was under $50 for two people. We did not order coffee as we wanted to go elsewhere afterwards for that. Pretty good price I would say, considering how expensive things have gotten lately. It was nice to see lots of people, families - solo diners - or groups eating at the restaurant and their lunch menu items looked good too. My family had lunch on Sunday and the food, drinks, and dessert were FANTASTIC! Hamburger were cooked perfectly with a soft toasted bun and crunchy pickles . French fries were great as well as the sweet potato fries. I the cheeseburger salad with ranch on the side and will order it again. The ranch dressing was really delicious. Sweet tea and strawberry lemonade was sweet enough. We had a big party on Sat with 14 ppl and worried if we needed to wait for a long time. They did not accept reservation and I always saw a long queue there. Out of our expectations it only took us for 10 mins on waiting, and they offered 2 long tables to us side by side. Everybody ordered our own dish, typically American breakfast and lunch food. They offered alcohol drinks too. Portions were very big, typically American size, many of us could not finish the whole dish and needed to box. To conclude it was a good experience to dine there. Brought my aunt here for her first time and she loved it. Claudia our waitress forgot our drink refills , our dinner cornbread, but she was literally running multiple tables across the business. I ordered a hot tea, but it quickly became a mess as the tea extra holder leaked everywhere and they didn't have just plain black tea, so that was a bit of disappointment. This review is only for the weekday special of Steak and Eggs for 11.99. It is a small steak but very good for a breakfast steak. Likewise, the potatoes and eggs were perfectly cooked and to make sure you leave full, you get a big biscuit. When area restaurants are charging a lot more for just ordinary bacon and eggs and toast, this is a pretty good value. read more

It was Saturday and the lines for brunch are insane so I had to pick an alternative. Black Bear is a franchised American diner that serves classic comfort food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each time that we've been here, it has been consistently good. I do like the Fullerton location more for convenience and ease of parking. The interior is spacious with counter seating available for solo diners or if you don't feel like waiting for a table. The decor is bear themed and so cute. As we entered the restaurant, the hostess was friendly and welcoming. We got seated much quicker than anticipated. Our server was nice and attentive. We decided to order from the breakfast menu. I usually opt for an entree from the "little less" which gives you a smaller portion. I had the ham and cheese omelette which I thought was pretty good. You can't go wrong with the most simplest dish. Most breakfast entrees are served with a choice of potatoes and toast, biscuit or pancake. I went with hash browns and a pancake. The single pancake was a hefty size and fluffy. It was a delicious breakfast combo. Hubs likes the country fried steak and eggs. The steak was flavorful with the country gravy. BB is still my choice for a quick weekend brunch. The quality and menu options are better than other chain competitors. read more

I come to Black Bear Diner pretty frequently because one can never get tired of breakfast food, doesn't matter what time of day it may be. They always have great customer service and are quick to get your food out in a timely fashion. Prior to the second shut down they did have indoor seating, however, now they only allow for outdoor seating in the parking lot and take out as well. If you're in the mood for some yummy scrumptious food, this a great spot! Plus, it's reasonably priced. Just know that they did condense their menu, and the takeout menu does differ from the outdoor seating menu, since their takeout is geared towards larger parties. read more

Came to this location late on a Thursday night. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. We had ordered online and went with the Bears Choice with 2 sausage links, eggs, and biscuits and gravy. The service was very friendly with us being the only ones in there. They were obviously cleaning up and preparing to close, but we didnt feel like they were rushing us out. The Bears Choice is around $13. Food wise, it was okay. The eggs were fine, sausage links decent, and the gravy was good. The biscuits were a bit old tasting and not freshly baked. It was the end of the day so im not really surprised i guess. The amount of food was decent, so worth the $13. I've been to Black Bear Diner before but it had been years. I would consider coming back here to try other food items. read more
