The breakfast slides were good but I will say that the food could have used just a bit more salt and the hash browns were a but over cooked, too crunchy for our taste. I don't know how this place has such negative reviews. I've been here several times and have had wonderful service every visit. The food is always hot and fresh, and the staff is extremely friendly. First things first, as a Jersey girl this is not a typical diner. Came in for an early dinner with my husband and we were seated immediately. The menu was super overwhelming for a girly like me who LOVES food, but I made it a point to only look at the dinner options. My husband had the chicken bacon ranch wrap with fries which he enjoyed very much. I ordered a house salad and the pesto pasta with grilled chicken which tasted great although it was missing the tomatoes that it was supposed to have. The garlic bread and cornbread were top notch! The service was just ok. My husband asked for ranch for his fries and the server placed it on the table beside us. I also had to ask for a to go container 3 times before getting one. We decided to revisit Black Bear Diner in Humble for breakfast and to no surprise it was a big disappointment again. The manager/host and waiter were very welcoming and nice. To start off, the coffee was warm and not hot. I ordered the avocado toast with two eggs over medium from the health/fit section off the menu. When the order came out, the eggs were DRENCHED in margarine (appr. 8 tbsp). It took me four napkins to remove it. My spouse ordered the meat lovers omelette with extra American cheese. When the order came out the cheese was just thrown on top and not melted (still cold). The food came out so cold and drenched in margarine. Will not be returning to this restaurant! read more

if you're looking for a big breakfast in a very cool yet rustic atmosphere, this is the place. I stopped in for brunch and sat at the counter since I was alone. I got fantastic service and even the manager came over and welcomed me and made small talk. It's a new restaurant and it has the feel of a Rocky Mountains or Canadian resort. The portions are humongous! At least at breakfast or brunch. Everything was done perfectly and sitting at the counter I had great service. The manager even came by himself once and refilled my coffee when he noticed my cup was not full. As I was coming in a van pulled up from 1 of the senior living communities care by and offloaded about 15 seniors coming in for their lunch. It was interesting to see how well they were received by the staff, I guess they must be regulars and to see how that major influx of customers did not slow down the service to me at all. I'm going to go back and try it again for lunch one day soon. One thing to note though is they don't have any alcohol at all. I asked the manager about that and he said they have no plans to add it it's just not their business model. That's okay I don't like to drink with my breakfast or lunch anyway! read more

This restaurant reminds me a little of twin peaks, of course without the half naked women, million TVs, and cold beers. It touts itself as having hearty comfort food where there is something for everyone. One of their mottos is "feed your inner bear." The interior is very open with a small gift shop/area and cashier's area, then main seating, diner-esque countertop seating at the rear (if you happen to come alone) and then the restrooms. They make some items homemade including the biscuits, cold slaw, corned beef, albacore tuna salad, meatloaf and country gravy. Some items are either hand-pattied like the breakfast sausage patties or hand-breaded like the chicken parmesean. Their OJ is fresh-squeezed and comes in 2 sizes. The most expensive item on the menu is the rib eye or new york strip steak @ 16.99 Fridays are ayce fish (pollack) - 11.99 after 4pm. Sat/Sun is the prime rib. They don't give pricing on menu but its probably around the same price. They don't list their shakes on the menu either, but according to the server, they have chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and huckleberry. You can save $2 on the New York steak if you order the breakfast version. Interesting items on the menu include: Portuguese linguica sausage, Huckleberry shake, classic bear claw, cheeseburger salad, and tri-tip. I ordered a basic burger, well not quite, actually their largest burger fit for the likes of Paul Bunyan. It's a 10 oz beef patty (which is very dense might I add), specially seasoned and comes with all the fixings, mayo and thousand island and grilled onions. I had them remove the dressing. You can choose 1 side, any side with no upcharge, so that's nice. Baked potato is not available until after 4pm of course. I chose their onion rings which were heavily breaded and nothing special. I believe these were pre-frozen, like the hamburger patty. The flavor of the burger was okay, it was just not hand-formed like I prefer and cooked medium well with no juiciness. You can't select how you want it cooked. I also added a chocolate shake which was actually pretty good and is served on a platter. I don't know the price since the server forgot to charge me for it, but the shake comes with the glass cup along with the stainless steel mixing cup with the extra shake portion many places just throw out. I visited during lunch and it took me about 1 hr 15 mins to get in and out, and this was sitting at the back counter area. They will have to work on timing if they expect customers to be frequent visitors at lunchtime. My colleague tells me the cfs and the omelettes are good. read more

This is our third time here. Our first time was a large group for dinner and it was very enjoyable and no one went home hungry. We came for thanksgiving and again food was delicious and service was fantastic. It's been a while since I have been out due to my chemo treatments so today I felt well and went to church and wanted to get breakfast. We decided on Black Bear. We walked in and it was crowded, people sitting everywhere. It's only two of us and we were seated right away at a table. We could have sat at the bar too because there was room. The last time one of the wait staff had poor personal hygiene. Every time they walked by the smell followed. That was just gross. We gave the place a final attempt. One of the waiters was wearing sweatpants. The floors are disgusting. The food . Wait time for food (for what is served) is way to long. Waiter never checks on food after delivered nor checks for refills. (This happened all three times) The staff is cordial enough, the service (being polite) was mediocre. I have been to both the Humble Location and Sugarland Location and notice that they are several locations in many of the Houston Suburbs. If found the food and service very friendly. If that wasn't enough you could add a dessert or take various whole cobblers, pies and cakes home. Had a late lunch with my daughter on a Sunday afternoon, after shopping nearby we were hungry! Seated quickly at a booth in a very busy restaurant filled with many conversations. Shawn was our waiter and he was attentive and friendly. He kindly explained the menu to me as I was asking about the vegetarian and vegan options, which they do not have. This place sort of reminds me of a Cracker Barrel but not to that extreme, they have different items for sale close to the register. The menu has breakfast and lunch that is served consistently throughout every day, I ordered the pancakes and my daughter ordered their breakfast sliders which are basically breakfast sandwiches. The food was brought to our table swiftly and hot, they have hot syrup which to me is very important when I'm eating pancakes .... Who likes cold syrup on their pancakes? Not me. My only issue is the pancakes are over the top sweet, the added powdered sugar is too much for my tastebuds. I'll ask to skip that ingredient next time. I am LIVID!!! We have gone to any and all Black Bears Diners that we can find, and NEVER have we ever had an issue! We went on a Sunday night and the restaurant was slow. The service was great, the food was delicious, nothing to complain about there. The place was dirty. Outside the entrance was person asking for donations to a cause that probably doesn't exist. The service was very slow. The waitress was loud and obnoxious. She walked past at least 5 times to loudly explain our food was delayed with a different excuse each time. It was far too cold inside. And now the food- the eggs were like rubber, the chicken wrap was tasteless and the cold French fries were inedible. All of this was at noon and the place was about half full. I can't imagine what it would have been like if it was busier. I stood in front of the cashier waiting to hand her my check and it took her a while to even look up from her cellphone to notice me.
