While the menu prices haven't been escalated as much as at other restaurants, the portion sizes seemed noticeably smaller than on my prior visits many years ago. That's not necessarily a bad thing, however, as having reasonable portions prevents food waste. I came in for the diner classics, starting with the Santa Maria Tri-Tip, 10 ounces of marinated tri-tip; the Roasted Turkey, 8 ounces of white meat turkey doused in a salty gravy and served with cranberry sauce; and the Blackened Salmon, a wild Pacific fillet seasoned with Cajun spices. My favorite of these was the tri-tip, cooked to a juicy medium, just as I had requested. The plates were served with salad and a selection of sides, and the broccoli/carrots and homemade biscuits were highlights. I also had the Taco Salad, a mixture of lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, pickled jalapeños, avocado, shredded cheddar and jack cheeses, salsa, and grilled chicken breast, all served in an oversized fried taco shell lined with refried beans. The olives, jalapeños, and salsa gave this salad a flavor punch--a nice south of the border-inspired dish! Overall, the food here was decent though not outstanding, and the diner vibes were quaint and familiar. Our waiter was very nice, friendly, and attentive, and I truly appreciated their service. Unfortunately, the food didn't meet my expectations. The fries tasted like they had been refried, and the bacon on my sandwich was so overcooked that it was extremely hard. What really affected our experience, though, was how rushed we felt. Since the restaurant is open 24 hours, I expected to be able to finish our meal comfortably. I completely understand that staff need to clean, but having employees repeatedly walk around our table while cleaning and seeing coworkers nod in our direction, as if signaling someone to bring us the check, made us feel like we were being hurried out. It came across as unwelcoming and a bit rude. Overall, while the service from our waiter was great, the quality of the food and the atmosphere at the end of our visit left a disappointing impression. We have been here a few times. Normally the portions are decent. Their steak and eggs breakfast was 'ono. On the other hand when my husband and I both ordered pot roast; it seemed as though they semi split our order. There was hardly any meat which was disappointing. However, their banana cream pie is one of our favorite items. It is so good. I was pleasantly surprised that the caesar salad was good too. Sergio is very friendly and efficient. Their food quality has gone down. I was so disappointed. Hubby and I came for dinner and I was looking forward to my meal. It looked great. The meat loaf was good. I was not a fan of the onion strings, so I just pushed them aside. But the mashed potatoes were so watered down. Take a close look. You can clearly see it. It did not taste good. Came here for Sunday brunch and figured it was a good time to finally try this spot. Parking was super easy since it is part of a larger complex. When we walked in there was a short line to put our name down, but the wait was only about five minutes at 10 am. The restaurant itself has very cozy diner vibes. Once we were seated we got our menus right away. I ordered the chicken sausage egg white scramble with hash browns and gluten free toast which was a small extra charge. The food was fine but definitely felt more like quantity over quality. Nothing bad, just not very memorable. They bring the check to you and you pay up front. Service overall was average. Cleanliness could be better. When taken to our table there were food crumbs on both sides of the booth seats. There was no way that you didn't see the food crumbs on the seating, and the employee didn't take us to another table nor did he have the seating wiped down. Black bear diner is always fun to go to. Fantastic food, good service, beautiful ambiance and environment, it's that good of a diner to go to. I'm also especially glad they brought back the fried chicken dish that was discontinued during covid. The sandwiches and burgers are amazing, the fries are crispy and delicious and the diner is just a bunch of fun to go to. The main problem is the pricing but that's expected. We came here after our hiking at Little Yosemite in Sonul, California. I came with my wife, my son and his girlfriend. We are celebrating her birthday. We ordered California Omelette, Corned Beef, Bacon Omelette and Sausage Omelette. They are all good and the servings are big so we ended up taking out some.
