We came at the perfect time! 12:00 noon the breakfast crowd had all left and the lunch crowd had just started to trickle in. All of the staff was super nice and the food was delicious. Really great little spot. I would love to check out their breakfast.

Chicken Fried Steak and two Eggs with Half Order Biscuits and Gravy
    Mabel H.

Whenever I'm craving brunch, I come home to Jim's as corny as that sounds. I order the exact same thing every time: chicken fried steak with two over medium eggs with hash browns and biscuits with gravy instead of toast ($17.95 + $1.75 for biscuits swap). Let me tell you, this is not a small plate yet I gobble it up because it's that good! You can't tell me that dipping gravy covered chicken in egg yolk with a side of ketchup smeared potatoes is not the perfect bite!!! My guilty pleasure is also the tiny Irish crème creamers that they serve when I order their house coffee ($3.45, free refills). I also swipe them from the table before I leave LOL. We took our 15 month old here yesterday and she loved the six dollar pancakes ($9.95...why not $6? lol), but then she tried my biscuits and gravy and forgot about her pancakes after that :P We have always had amazing service here, and we love the cozy diner feel. Jim's will be a brunch staple for as long as we're living in Pleasanton!

Spicy Chicken Sandwich with potatoes salad and side ranch

I've been for breakfast (Awesome!) but never for lunch, so today I gave then I try, I ordered the Spicy Chicken Sandwich (4 Stars) with potatoes salad (3 Stars) and a side of ranch (4 Stars). The chicken breasts was freshly battered and fried, really good seasoning and crispy. Everything was fresh, the bun, head lettuce, tomatoes, red onion and pickle spread (I wish it was sliced to go on the sandwich, but oh well). The potatoes salad was ok, it didn't seem homemade. Usually when I see sliced potatoes and tiny bits of parsley or pimento, I think it not homemade. The reach dressing was a good quality, I don't think it was made from scratch but they use a good one. Great friendly service in a country themed room, very relaxing! Until next time...

Steak n Eggs. Thin steak but it's also $20ish, so cheaper than most.

Food about a 3.5* for me but will round up for the good and efficient service and the small-town diner charm. I like how it is in a big shopping center on the edge of this town, so it isn't so densely trafficked, and parking is a breeze. Very small town vibe here, which I love. Very country in setting delving in Pleasanton's historic farm culture. Old farming tools and paraphernalia decorate the walls and real pictures of family are displayed in several areas. Lots of regulars here where names are known and probably orders/eating habits are well remembered. Actually once inside and nobody told you where you were at, you'd be hard pressed in figuring out which state you were in, as this model literally could fit in any small town America. Steak & Eggs ($22ish/3.5*) They use a thin cut NY Strip, maybe 6-8oz, very petite. But it is also in the low $20s, which is on the lower end of the spectrum for this dish. Bigger ones are usually above $26 these days. I didn't mind the size really as for the breakfast hours I'm a little more keen these days on not eating too heavy. But in that thin cut of steak, it simply cannot be done in the medium rare fashion. I basically was content with medium doneness once I saw the size. Eggs and toast always perfect here, they've got that down. They give you a choice between regular shredded hashbrowns and 'ranch' potatoes which I chose because it sounded more 'special'. Not really just seemed like a deep fried frozen product, so to me just seemed like french fries but in an oval shape. Next time I'll go basic griddled hashbrowns, at least those are comfort for me. Smash Burger ($17ish/3.5*) I saw this on special on another visit so I gave it a whirl. No descriptor on the sign but they did ask what side fries or potato salad. I chose potato salad as fries just seem so boring to me most times. The potato salad was very chunky with decent tangy mayo dressing. It did seem like an already made product as I can tell by the texture of the potato, but it still was a decent choice. The burger itself was not what I was expecting. First off the burger patty didn't seem 'smashed' and also in that style by default the burger patties get a crisping from the hot griddle. Not here just seemed like 2 quarter pounder patties just barely griddled, like probably a minute on each side. So it ended up being a huge bite of a half pound of burger and since it was barely griddled, this thing was juicy as heck. Upon the first bite because it was right off the heat, this thing was leaking juice like crazy, like dripping like a faucet. Lol. I had to put it down and reevaluate how I was gonna go about this. I decided to just remove the bottom bun (as it was a mushy mess at this point) and just eat this juicy mofo open face with a knife and fork. The meaty bites were indeed satisfying and filling but without the crisp browning, just made the bites less intense than I wanted. Gooey American cheese and grilled chopped onions did give it that classic American feel. I liked this burger outing, I just couldn't love it. Ice Teas and Coffees here are filled with timely precision and I always hear neighboring tables ask for special request with zero attitude from the servers. They just know how to accommodate here. Still gotta try their Chicken Fried Steak as it seems they have a good rep for it, but I gotta do a major hike nearby or play golf in the AM for me to build that monster appetite required to take on that dish. Challenge accepted.

Saw good reviews and thought we'd try Jim's. The homemade biscuits and gravy were very hearty with the added over easy egg. The off-menu breakfast sandwich was priced too high in our opinion. $20 was a bit much for that and home fries. The service was good and the diner is just what you'd expect... Clean, cute with country music to boot. Stop in if you're close.

My daughter was meeting for tutoring at this plaza and I wanted to grab her a bite to eat. I ordered a breakfast sandwiches with ham, scrambled egg, and American cheese on sourdough. They didn't disappoint! The sandwich is big enough to split if you like especially with the hash browns. You do need to request ketchup, napkins and silverware and if you order an omelette the have cards and after a certain amount of purchases you receive a free omelette.

My husband and I were craving breakfast so we decided to give this place a try. I got an omelette with a side of hash browns. And man did they stuff it with fixins. They did not skimp. He got the country fried steak and really enjoyed it. The side of bread for my meal was okay. I asked for a side of sourdough bread but it didn't taste like sourdough. Other than that we would definitely go back. The vibe is old school and cozy.

That's my omelette? Who doesn't want hot avocado and sour cream all slopped together

worst service EVER today !!! food was horrible too. Dina the waitress had a horrible attitude. took 20 minutes to get coffee and water. when we complained about our food taking over 30 minutes we got attitude and taunting from Dina. (3 tables in whole restaurant) not busy Close your doors !!! What was once a good diner is now trash !!!! Huge mistake letting that waitress ruin a diner. she is a greedy waitress who wants all the tables and tips $ Horrible service. Horrible food. CLOSE

Went there for the first time yesterday and had a great experience. The steak and eggs were cooked well, and the bacon came out perfectly crispy just the way I requested. The waitresses clearly knew many of the regulars and took time to sit and have genuine conversations with them, which gave the place a warm, hometown feel. Overall, it was a very pleasant visit and I'll definitely be back.

    Half Order Biscuits and Gravy

Decided to try this spot last minute! Did not leave disappointed!!! The owner Sue (I believe was her name) was friendly and gave us a few tips when ordering and told us the guest favorites. Which of course we tried and she was right! We tried the Chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy , and French toast with apple topping. Everything was delicious! And came out quickly. I really liked how the French toast was topped with fresh apples , cinnamon and powdered sugar and was not an Apple/syrup topping as sometimes those toppings taste too sweet and turn your meal into dessert. Thanks again for the great service, will visit again soon!

I love the New Orleans food scene and therefore had a pretty high bar for Cajun food outside of Louisiana. I came in a little hesitant because I've been disappointed too many times by the options we have in the bay for Cajun food. But after I opened the box and took my first bite of that blackened shrimp Po Boy I could've sworn I thought I was sitting in the French Quarter again. The nice young lady that took my order recommended the blackened shrimp as an underrated choice on the po boys so I had to try it out. I came stuffed with a Red wine coleslaw, tomatoes, pickle slices and a drizzle of their special sauce (that I can only describe as spicy cajun mayo). 12/10 and I'm not exaggerating I also had a side (and when I say side take it with a grain of salt cause this feeds like 3 people for being a side) of the fresh Crab fries. Not overdone with the ingredients yet what a powerful hit of flavor, the Cajun seasoning usually comes out a bit salty on fries but these guys figured out how to balance it with the fresh shredded crab on top, garnished off with some green onion and more special sauce, this thing made me look around the room to see if anyone else was reacting like this over the food. (And they were! People were sitting there talking about "last time I tried ___ and ___ and it was fire") In the end I saw a guy that looked very proud to be there and was helping around the place while running back to his computer, that was Brett, the owner. I had to go and shake the man's hand and pick his mind a bit. He's a born and raised in New Orleans guy and you could tell by his kindness and southern hospitality. (Dude gave me a delicious carrot cake to go) Unfortunately in the end I had to walk back out into the reminder that I was in Castro valley and not New Orleans but for minute I was able to remember everything that had previously experienced from my trips there and that's what a great meal should do for you. His city should be proud of what he created here. I will absolutely be back to work my way through the full menu and add more pics to this review.
