The atmosphere of the diner is very welcoming and seems like a great place for families and groups to go to for all meals, especially breakfast and brunch! They really capture the essence of a "black bear diner" with a wooden cabin-esque interior and bear decor all around. The service was really nice and they were constantly checking in on us to make sure everything was alright. We ordered meals for each of us; I got the chicken fried steak eggs benedict and an arnold palmer. The chicken fried steak eggs benedict came with hash brown and a small bowl of fruits. The eggs benedict itself was pretty good, but the hash browns were a bit too dry for me. I mixed them with the hollandaise sauce of the eggs benedict to soften them up. The fruits were a nice refresher after the meal was over. The arnold palmer had a good tang to it and it helped to clear my palette throughout the meal as well. read more

My BF and I went into Black Bear diner last night for a late night meal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place was pretty busy for the middle of the week but it was quiet enough that we can hear each other talk.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server made a fresh pot decaf coffee for my boyfriend which was incredibly nice of him, the prices were surprisingly low and you got a lot of food for a low price. Food was delicious, perfect and filling. We ran into the manager who was grateful for our support and we thanked him for a great meal and service, talking to him for a few minutes you can see how dedicated he was to his establishment. Ordered breakfast catering items for a event and food was very delicious and tasty . Scrambled eggs and potatoes were well made The service was excellent as food was ready before time to pickup and enough quantity was given to feed more . It was my first time visiting this place and I will definitely be coming back! I was there around 10:20 AM on a Sunday and even though it was quite busy, I was able to get seated almost immediately. The atmosphere was very welcoming with thematic bears all over the place, but it did not feel like it was too much. The thing that surprised me the most was their menu: it looks like a newspaper and I have not seen one in years, so that was a unique thing. All the food came out extremely fast (one can look into the kitchen through the open door, and the staff worked very efficiently, and everything seemed clean and as it is supposed to be) and tasted deliciously. The only thing I noticed was that the hash browns were a bit too crispy, this too dry, but some ketchup fixed that. The waitress was very polite and refilled the drinks right before we asked her to do so, so that was nice as well. On the way out, there is the option of buying some of the desserts as well as merch. read more

If I could leave no stars, I would. My mom and aunt visited this restaurant for breakfast and both ordered eggs over easy, toast, hash browns, and bacon. When the food arrived, my aunt noticed it looked unappetizing, as if it had been sitting out and reheated. Despite her reservations, she ate it because she was hungry. Soon after, my mom felt nauseous and had a stomach ache and experienced diarrhea. Not long after leaving, my aunt began to vomit and also had diarrhea. They were clearly food poisoned. I wish they had alerted the staff, but this experience only reinforces my dislike for Black Bear Diner. To the staff: please check your food quality and avoid serving items that have sat out too long. People work hard for their money and deserve a proper meal. Do better! read more

Ate here for dinner. I ordered fish and chips and they use to make real battered fish. This was definitely frozen fish patties. If I say that the best part of my meal was the side of broccoli, that's very sad! Then on the way out got coconut cream pie and the crust is not crust. It was the grounded graham crackers. It's supposed to be a crust. Like graham cracker with brown sugar and butter if they are going to use the same as cheese cake crust. I thought maybe they forgot to make the graham cracker crust. Then I dig into it and it was almost all whipped cream and so very little coconut cream. If you want ppl to come back pls do not change the quality of your food. I know everything cost a lot more now but if you change the quality of your food ppl won't go back! If I can give it zero stars I would. read more

Restaurant is bear-themed and very nice service to satisfy the review requirements. Everything appeared clean. This review is based on a tri-tip sandwich. Having just ordered the tri-tip sandwich for the first time, the table next to us mentioned to the server that she doesn't like the change to their French dip sandwich. I was not familiar with either sandwich, so I kept my order. The tri-tip sandwich tasted heavy on the taco seasonings: cumin, chili pepper, paprika, etc. making it not a French dip, but it wasn't being sold as a French dip sandwich. We've seen this place so many times passing by and finally decided to give it a try. I'd say we were not disappointed. Plenty of parking and seating. They don't take reservations but we had No problem getting a table on Sat morning. Service was excellent.. Very friendly. They don't rush you for anything. Food I'd say was average. Veggie omlet was good.. shastha scrambled eggs were great but for the huge spinach leaves spoiling every bite. Lol would have preferred them to be chopped in half at least. The avocado toast was bad.. it just had a spread of mashed avocado instead of fresh avocado sliced up. I wouldn't recommend getting that dish. What really stood out though is their stuffed bear claw French toast!! Omg so so good! It's perfect for sharing too. Overall it's a good diner, with HUGE portions, very reasonably priced and greattt service. read more

My husband and I went here on Forth of July when most restaurants were closed. We had not been here in years. We had an excellent waitress who took great care of us. We both decided to have the Chicken Fried Steak dinner. This is one of my favorite dishes and I had not had it in years as no place we usually goes has it on the menu. It was a quality, tender and large piece. The crust was crisp and flavorful with a nice gravy on top. I thoroughly enjoyed it as did my husband. We had mashed potatoes and fresh veggies as sides and a nice crisp, cold salad beforehand. The ambiance is a fun theme. We did not have high expectations, but the experience exceeded them. I will be returning again, maybe with the grandkids in tow as I think they would enjoy it. read more

Known for their big portions so if that's what you like it's a great place for it! Breakfast has a ton of options, everything from omelettes to pancakes and French toast. Lunch has a few salads which are really good to sandwiches and burgers. Dinners are a wide variety of home style meals, meatloaf, chicken fried steak and beyond. The biscuits are gigantic! Also lots of pies for dessert. This location does have a fairly small parking lot but it's doable. Usually very busy but the service is fast and very friendly. Old style wood cabin ambiance which is really cool. Great place for families with small kids also read more

I would recommend this location I have been here 4 times. 3 of 4 have been a great experience. The food, particularly the Hamberger salad was quite delicious. (See pictures) the service was prompt and the server polite. The cute cabin/ bear theme is through out every peace of this building. The menu resembles a newspaper...Super cute. All in all I chalk, the one bad night up to just that ...a bad night. 4/5 stars. Would go again! Juan was our server tonight and to say he gave good service was too much of an understatement. He had a great attitude, very attentive to our needs, and extremely friendly! What an enjoyable place to go - even when they make mistakes. Great Chicken Fried Steak and eggs among other meals. The reason I said a mistake was I had breakfast there and ordered "HAMBURGER" steak and eggs. I received "STEAK" and eggs but the steak was surprisingly good. No problem for me, mistakes happen. One time I ordered "HAMBURGER" steak and eggs and got a patty - Ummm?? I think I might have to bring paper and pencil next time or maybe a photo. :) The food is so much to my liking that I eat what they bring me as long as they keep my coffee cup full. read more

Black Bear Diner - Pleasanton is doing things right...plenty of outdoor seating, signage about masks and social distancing...sanitizing the tables, one-use menus (makes me cringe but necessary) hot sauce bottles sanitized between customers and staff wearing masks. Going to a place that follows safety protocols definitely makes for a more comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. Staff here super friendly, efficient and doing the best possible. Food is simple,!delicious diner food with no complaints with leftovers for another meal. I mainly visit for the breakfast (though their tri tip dip is yummy!) since it's my friends favorite meal of the day and likes the variety, portions and consistency. I guess to him, you CAN mess up breakfast. 4 stars for the food and extra star for the great job they're doing at this location! Plenty of outdoor seating available, place gets busy from 730am - 930 but rest assured, spaced out nicely. Note: if you like pancakes, they do some delicious, sweet cream ones! read more

When your picnic basket is running low and stomach roars as loud as a bear, here's your place for a large-food-fix that you can really chomp your teeth into. The menu has a lot of selections, breakfast is served all day, and worthy desserts at a fair price. This is a good default place that has something for everyone. It's not "diner" cool, per say. It's in the category of family restaurants: Cocos, Spires, Denny's, Carrows (but better than), and just under a Marie Callender's or a Mimi's Cafe. The big difference? Bears. Tons of them. They have everyone's love -- magnets to spice up your plain ol' refrigerator. It's also a great place to take your grandma. Nice service-oriented folks in service and management. Sit at the counter and you'll observe good relations between staff and smiles, and lots of fun with mmmm's and oooohhh's everytime a chicken fried steak, a bread pudding, or a chocolate hot fudge sundae is ready to be served. Not running back, nor do I miss it...but would I go back? Yes, I said above, but ONLY when my picnic basket is running low. Posted up at the Bear for a late night feed this Sunday. We were lucky to have Kyle as our waiter as he is awesome. Hit the California burger which was good and over loaded with fries. Fried chicken with old school gravy (the kind that you used to get in the third grade cafeteria circa 1971) which was epic. Floated a single pancake as a side dish. House salad was very fresh. Also ponied up with a fish and chips and here is where the one star disappeared. The fish was over cooked but had strong potential. The Chiefs and Bengals OT game recap was on so the cook may have been watching that and left the fish in a little too long. Could happen to anyone so let's call it a half star removal. The other half star removal was due to the fries. They are good but not great. I have no idea how to make them better but they need a little something. They are standard Denny's type fries or like the fries at Forbes Mill. I think the fries at Jack in the Box are really good (don't like McDonalds fries at all) so maybe they could be more like Jack's fries. All in all a very nice experience at the Bear. read more

rounding up a bit for the great service. my expectations were kinda low, but I was staying in a hotel across the street and didn't want to drive anywhere, and since I'd never been to a BB, figured I'd try it space is kitschy inside, made to look like a cabin in the woods somewhere I guess. I had a Cobb salad which was great. all the food passing by looked good too. huge glass of an Arnold Palmer and I splurged and had banana cream pie for dessert, which tasted good, but was about 4x the amount I could eat. easily shareable. if I knew I wasn't going to eat lunch (and maybe dinner haha) I'd come back for one of the huge breakfast meals value is outstanding and service was really good. not just for my lowered expectations, but all the staff was friendly. I thought this would be one-and-done, but I will definitely return! read more

History

Established in 1995.

In 1861 a gold prospector named Sisson fell in love with and opened an inn in Strawberry Valley - a quaint mountain meadow at the foot of Mt. Shasta, California, frequented by black bears and people alike. The friendly atmosphere and large portions of homestyle food became their standard, so when Bob and Laurie Manley and their partner Bruce Dean opened the first Black Bear Diner on that in 1995, they were determined to rekindle the same hospitality lavished upon early Strawberry Valley guests. The menu, service, and decor were designed to remind guests of a time when life was a little simpler, and service and quality were the cornerstones of business. Although we've grown from a single location in Mt. Shasta to 150+ restaurants, all are dedicated to the same simple concepts.

Ordered online just to arrive to pick up my order and find out it hadn't been made yet. Mya advised me that she attempted to call me and tell me one of the items in my order (The Reuben) was not available. So they did not make any of my order. Mya wasn't very concerned with the fact that I had ordered online (PAID), waited in line to retrieve my order NOW I had to wait for it to be made. Her lack of empathy did not help the matter at all. I understand things happen and sometimes items may not be available but her attitude and lack of concern was unacceptable. My office places large orders from this location often and there may be times we are missing an item or two but we understand for BIG orders but not an omelet and a sandwich. After considering my options which were to go online and cancel my order for a refund (Prepaid) or wait for the food to be prepared. I decided to wait my entire lunch for the order for it to come to me incorrect. When I agreed to wait for the order I asked Mya to be sure it is prepared as ordered online. She said ok. IT WAS NOT MADE AS ORDERED ONLINE. I checked the order and told Mya it was wrong and she told me well that's the way it printed on the receipt. I tried to show her what my receipt said online and she just replied rudely well that's how it printed here. I left very upset and late returning from lunch. My omelet was smashed into a small to go container along with toast and hash browns and guess what the bacon that I paid for was not in the bag nor was it on my omelet. She did not provide any condiments, napkins or a simple smile nor show of concern. I will be sure to share my experience with my colleagues and surely exercise our options by ordering from the many optional restaurants around. I went to Black Bear Diner for the first time this past Mother's Day. At first, everything was great. There was a young man at front who was cleaning, but took the time to greet us and ensure someone would be with us shortly. We were seated quickly in a booth and were given time to look over the menu. Our waiter checked in with us periodically, almost a little too often, until we ordered. Once the food arrived, it looked and tasted great. As my girlfriend began to eat her red potatoes, she noticed there were a number of sesame seeds mixed into them. Normally this would have been just weird, but she is allergic to sesame seeds and had to stop eating immediately. I brought this to the attention of our waiter and in turn the manager. Both gentlemen were absolutely useless and tried to blame the fact that I had a burger as the reason the seeds got into her food. The best part of this was that my burger did not have any sesame seeds on it at all! All the manager wanted to do was claim there was no way they could have accidentally gotten the seeds into the food, despite the fact that they were obviously there! He never asked how my girlfriend was doing and continued to give me blank stares until I stopped talking and left. As the icing on the cake, our daughter's meal should have come with a sundae. Our waiter never offered her one even after we asked while paying. To be honest, the food was well priced and good enough to have gone back. The horrible service and uncaring attitude from the manager, in addition to questionable cooking practices in the kitchen will ensure we will never go back. read more

My wife and I visited the BBD for the first time about two weeks ago and had a wonderful experience and the food portions are tremendous. I took my wife to have breakfast yesterday and today for Mothers Day. We were greeted and sat in a descent amount of time. We were taken care of by Trevor and Rochelle yesterday and Jalynda and Rochelle today. I learned that Glenda runs the place and had to compliment her on her staff that took really good care of us. Jalynda even started the orange juice machine that made that freshly squeezed juice that is so good. The food was amazing and so were the staff. Truly hated this place . Magdy was very selective on which customers he respects, very judging person... I've guess he'd never heard the saying never judge a book by its cover, which he needs to learn. Treated me like a total criminal. Never coming here again........EVER!!! read more

This place is great for lunch, although they are always pretty busy during lunch of course. I think they have good quantities for the price and a fairly good selection. I am happy they just opened one in Pleasanton because it is fairly close to my office. read more

Our server was attentive, provided coloring pages to occupy the little and was patient with our selection making. Denny's has not been an option for my family for many, many years.
