Black Bear Diner has one of the best menus in this County! Their hobo omelette is absolutely incredible with big chunks of bacon and sausage and peppers and then homemade country potatoes oh my gosh talk about a taste treat oh my gosh! And then there's the coffee most places give you a choice of regular or decaf they give you a choice of regular decaf or espresso flavor which is a really decent coffee. My review from a week ago was really bad, but we gave them another chance. This time they were really crowded due to electricity outages from a major snow storm. Despite the understandably long wait for food, the service was excellent. They brought our drinks immediately, took our order in a timely fashion and checked back with us regularly to refill drinks and apologize for the wait. The waitresses kept busy, no standing around in groups gossiping while patrons were ignored. The food was excellent and cooked perfectly! A huge difference from the last visit when we were ignored for over 1/2 an hour and finally left, without being served. I don't see a response from the owner for my last review, but it seemed to have done some good. read more

I discovered the Black Bear Diner in my home town of Federal Way Washington. I stopped in to check it out with my family for breakfast and we've been back many times ever since. I think it was around our second or third visit that I noticed that the menu has a list of all of the Black Bear locations and as it turns out, there are a ton of them all up and down the west coast. I am especially pleased to find out that my family and I can enjoy our breakfasts at Black Bear while on our usual Disneyland vacations. Yay! I've eaten at Black Bear for breakfast, lunch and dinner and had many of the menu items and so have my family and everything that we've ever ordered has been delicious. The fried chicken, the burgers, the club sandwich, the pancakes, the chicken fried steak and eggs, you name it, we've loved it. The only thing that we haven't been a fan of is their enormous dinner roll. It looks cool but when we got ours, they were hard and dry. Not appetizing. We always opt for the cornbread muffins instead because those are dangerously good. This weekend, I had a parcel that I had to deliver on Monday in LA so I hit the road and brought my daughter with me. We ended up in Redding by the morning and my daughter said that she wanted to eat at a real restaurant. No fast food. I took the next exit and low and behold, a Black Bear diner! Of course it was my first choice and I told her how good the one back home is. We were not disappointed. This Black Bear has the same friendly staff, the same quality dishes and the same atmosphere of the one in Federal Way and I'm guessing that no matter which location I visit in the future, the experience will always be a good one. Don't forget to grab a peach cobbler or a berry pie on your way out. Black Bear diner is as good as it gets in your classic American diner. I never ate at Black Bear before so I was excited to eat here. It took 10 to 15 min to get ice tea. It was about 12:30 pm they were still brewing it. Thats not good at the height of lunch hour. Fish and chips for my husband. The coating was very thick and too crispy or crunchy. He said he never had fish and chips that crunchy. I got a biscuit. It was huge but it was dry and again, crunchy like it sat there for a while. And finally Im a vegetarian. I didnt appreciate finding a piece of ham in my vegetarian omelet. Apparently the worst time to go here is between 2 to 5 PM. This was the second time I have been here for a late lunch and the service was terrible. Apparently most of the staff leaves after the lunch rush. The toast on my turkey club was burnt and the onion rings were way over cooked. Redding, California: We usually enjoy our dinner at Black Bear at the locations we have been to. In Redding, we were very disappointed. Our dinner, mine was the turkey, my husband's was the pot roast, was definitely hot but not great by any means. My husband had soup with his meal, but it was lukewarm at best. He said his potatoes & roast with gravy were mediocre & the carrots & potatoes were rock hard (inedible). The green beans were so soggy they left liquid on the plate. My turkey was okay but quite dry...gravy made it edible. The potatoes were good but the same issue with my green beans as my husband. My husband sat and watched the chef (if that is what you call them) nuke everything before sending it out. If I want nuked food I might as well buy TV dinners & nuke them for dinner. We were not the only ones complaining about dinner. While we were there we heard two different people mentioning the same things we had problems with. I think that Black Bear Diner should investigate this location. I would be sadden to hear that they don't stand behind their restaurants! read more

This is my first time visiting a Black Bear Dinner. Let me tell you the food is awesome, large portions, very filling, and they have great customer service. I was out with my family and everyone ordered a different dish, I tried them all from the fried chicken w/biskets and gravy to the delicious pancakes. I thought Norms pancakes we're good, we'll these are even better! Fluffier, soft and moist. Nice, big cups of coffee are offered. We may need to do a repeat tomorrow. read more

If I could give negative stars I would! We ate at this location several years ago on one of our many trips from SW WA to CA, it was a terrible experience, to say the least. There was a beautiful picture of a crab Louie salad on the menu, so I decided to order that one. It showed a generous scoop of Dungeness Crab on top flanked with beautiful avocado slices... when the salad was presented to me there was no avocado and it looked like possibly a teaspoon of crab. I asked my server where was the avocado and crab that were pictured, to which I was told that they had no avocado and that was all the crab I was going to get unless I paid for more... I said, you are charging me for the avocado, I would like more crab. They put another 1/2 teaspoon of crab on the lettuce which when I started to try to eat it, I noticed it was floating on all of this fluid in the bottom of the bowl. You know when you open a can of tuna there is a lot of oil or water that needs to be squeezed off, well I guess they dumped all the liquid from their canned crab into my bowl and called it good. This was so disgusting, I told the waiter that it was inedible, told the manager at the register, nobody would take the uneaten salad off of our bill. Right away, I sent an email to their home office, which I found out was in the same town... I got a generic response thanking me for my visit, no apology or offer of any compensation. There are many, much places to spend your money, I don't hesitate to tell everyone who will listen about this experience. BBD will never see another dime of our hard earned money, they don't care about happy customers! read more

After long time on road, saw the freeway sign and went online to check the hours and it said they were open till 10:00 pm. Navigated through the city to find it and get there at 8:15 and there is a handwritten sign that they were closing at 8:00. Hi, I'm here in Redding with my husband, godson, and 9-year-old great niece, and was looking for a place to eat breakfast on Thanksgiving morning. Given that our only other choices were Denny's and IHOP, I was VERY GLAD to find Black Bear. I ordered the VEGETERIAN OMELETTE and it was *delicous*. The ingredients were fresh, and they didn't overstuff it with cheese as many places do. It came with a choice of home fries or country potatoes, and at the waitress's suggestion, I ordered the COUNTRY POTATOES. Great choice! ( I was able compare them with my godson's home fries, and they were definitely superior). They were *not* greasy or overcooked, to my great pleasure. My only mistake was ordering a biscuit instead of toast. The biscuit was enormous and fairly tasteless. The ORANGE JUICE was freshly squeezed, though, and quite delicious. As other YELPers have noted, the decor is homey and the service very friendly and efficient. On a busy day, be prepared to wait 15 minutes for a table. I gave it four out of five stars because they had no poultry alternatives to bacon. (It *is* a chain, by the way, but a "local" one: according to their newspaper/menu, the other restaurants are all located in smaller cities in California, Nevada & Oregon (plus Phoenix). read more

Server was excellent. I was seated almost immediately, around 11 a.m. on a weekday. Popular place for lunch, from the looks of the place and all the customers coming and going. Honestly, after all these years eating burgers at too many places to count, this place has the best double cheese burger (I know it sounds mundane) I have ever eaten. It was fabulous. The fries were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and not soaked in grease. And I am not really looking for this kind of meal usually at a sit down restaurant. I thought Cheesecake Factory had a good one, but this one is better. Have eaten at the Black Bear diner in Federal Way, Washington a lot, but mostly for breakfast, which is always excellent.
