We're regulars here, so I don't review every time we come. I'm adding a review this time to make note of the baked cod, which my daughter tried for the first time last night. It was fantastic. Two large cod filets perfectly cooked and with really good flavor too. She noted that they were rather salty. I didn't notice that as much in the two bites I tried. Cooked in a lemon cream sauce, I'm not sure how healthy it is compared to other baked fish dishes, but it was quite tasty. On the flip side, the grilled chicken dish, which is a staple for my wife and I, was overcooked, rather dry, and slightly burned on the bottom. Side dishes are fine as usual. Service was good at the start but then slow later on, especially when my drink sat empty for a long time while our waitress was nowhere on site. First time at this location and I hadn't eaten at a Blacked-Eyed Pea in a long time. Came over for a quick bite to eat before shopping at the Outlets. Our server, Ashlyn, was very friendly, attentive, professional and efficient. Since I love chicken pot pies, I was happy to see they had it on the menu. My friend ordered a salad, which was huge. I had my chicken pot pie with a side of onion rings and beer and she had her salad with a soft drink. Both came out quickly and were well-prepared and delicious. Came here on a Friday night with my dad. We were seating right away and the food came out rather quickly as well. The booths were uncomfortable though and kind of small. Coming from California I have never really had this type of food. Not exactly my cup of tea but it did the trick and did not break the bank at all. This location is great for travelers up and down I 25! Easy on & off access, with plenty of parking. If you're looking to do some shopping, the Outlets at Castle Rock are right there too. Black-eyed Pea is known for its home style cooking & I've eaten here many times before. This location is now open for breakfast on Saturdays & Sundays. We arrived around noon for lunch & we're seated immediately. Unfortunately there was almost no AC when we were there & it was very warm. Our server was friendly & attentive, checking on us often. We ordered one of the Home Style Favorites, Chicken Fried Steak & the Rocky Mountain (marinated) Steak Salad. The Chicken Fried Steak was quite tasty & the gravy was great too! I wished the sweet potato was prepared a little more, such as opening it & adding butter on top, maybe even marshmallows. In spite of the Steak Salad being big, I thought it was a little pricey. The greens were fresh, nevertheless it was pretty plain, it only came with tomatoes & blue cheese crumbles, which I omitted. It was topped with fried mushrooms that seemed out of place, however they were crispy & flavorful. The steak was cooked perfectly & there was a lot of it thru out the dish. I couldn't taste the marinade flavor tho. Next time I'll try their Summer BBQ Menu, but you can't go wrong with sticking with the Home Style Favorites! read more

The food was average at best. I ordered the chicken Marsala. It was not seasoned and the chicken was tougher than leather. The glass I had my drink in was plastic and smelled like soap and Pepsi zero. I was not happy. My daughter had the buffalo Mac and cheese and she told me it was not good. It had way too much buffalo sauce and the chicken again had no flavor or seasoning. My wife however had a much better experience with the vegetable platter and broccoli and cheese soup. The fried pickles were also okay. The salads were good until my daughter found A piece of steel wool in her salad. I really wanted to give the server good marks. But they did not even address or apologize for the steel wool being in my daughter's salad. So to be fair i can only give two stars at best. The manager never came over or nothing. It's been a while since I last visited a Black-eyed Pea. I visited the Black-eyed Pea in Lakewood on various occasions in the past. It's taken me a while to visit this BEP location. Wish I didn't wait so long. A favorite menu item of mine is their Liver & Onions. I love how they serve it with a homemade gravy. My only feedback is that they could've offered a bit more steamed broccoli and more onions. I asked for extra onions when ordering and the amount of onions appeared to be regular portion size. Other than that, the food was good and consistent. I dined here on a Tuesday evening at about 5:30 PM and it wasn't that crowded. When I finished my meal, patrons started to flow in. I love how it wasn't that crowded when I dined here. I will probably return again at the same time. Watch those dinner rolls! They go down easy! They serve them before your main entree arrives. Betcha can't eat just one! Liver & Onions was good. Loved dipping the liver in that delicious gravy. I'm looking forward to my next visit here. They also offer a daily special. On Tuesdays they offer Beef Stroganoff. I will definitely return on a Tuesday. If you haven't been to BEP and enjoy home cooking in a nice old school atmosphere, I recommend checking them out. I have seen this place for years, but never gave it a thought, until tonight. That was my mistake. This place a great, old school, down home place. As an appetizer the fried green beans are excellent. Great flavor to the breading and the beans stay nice and crisp. Thanks To our waiter for suggesting them. The wait staff was all very friendly and helpful. The portions are large (although I hear that they used to be even bigger), I was able too eat too much. The chicken fried steak was everything that you'd want in a chicken fried steak...and the gravy put it over the top. Meals come with 2 sides, I went for the tater tots...which were fine, but the same fried tots you'd get anywhere...the broccoli and rice casserole was the one big let down of the meal. The must have 20 options for a side, so skipping this one is easy enough. The Cobb salad is a very generous portion (although it did still come with blue cheese, when it had been ordered without that). The third person in our group had the pot roast and meatloaf dinner. She loved both the pot roast and the meatloaf. Their desserts look amazing, but after the huge, heavy meals they serve, I don't know if I could eat all that in one sitting. read more

We come here every year around Thanksgiving (not on the exact day) to enjoy the turkey dinner experience. This year was disappointing compared to previous. Even though we are obviously seniors, we were given the regular menus. Then we had to ask for the senior menus. maybe they don't want seniors to be aware of the special pricing. Prices everywhere are going up, but here they increased way more than we were expecting. The portions on salmon and ham steak were surprisingly small. Turkey portion was ok. Dressing with turkey was just barely warm. Service was fine. Usually, the dining area is fairly crowded when we have gone. Today, there were only two or three other tables occupied. I go here about three times a year and usually order the vegetable plate. Just went today and ordered the sweet potato, broccoli and rice, onion rings, and squash casserole. All was good except the squash casserole. It was inedible. it tasted like it was 90% sugar, 10% squash. when the server came by, I told her they should not be serving that. My Saturday mens group met for breakfast (5th Saturday). I called the day prior to make sure they knew we were coming and they had the table all set. Then 5 more guys showed up and, with Megan's help, we added more room! Drink orders were taken quickly and Megan delivered them perfectly! Orders also came out quickly and everyone got real quiet while we ate. Absolutely no complaints unless one says I got to much to eat. This used to be an OK place to go and get a filling, home style meal. Last time I was there I was disappointed so I decided to give it one more try. I will say that the one bright spot here is generally the servers and mine was good. But so much has changed - they used to bring you a basket of corn bread and rolls and they did away with the corn bread during COVID and never brought it back. They would have honey on the table for it (but sadly, they told me long ago they had to stop leaving the honey on the table because people were stealing it). The rolls are OK but nothing special, and the two rolls were accompanied by a tiny amount of butter (not even enough for one roll) in a little paper cup. They also did away with the lunch specials, which were a perfect size (one slice of meat loaf instead of two, for example). Now you can only get the full-sized meal, which is a lot for lunch. In general, the menu has far fewer choices than it used to have. None of my food was very warm, and the brown gravy (which I ordered on the side) had a scum of hardened gravy on top. The mashed potatoes were pretty hard (and cold) and the kernel corn was swimming in water. The soda was flat. I know I could have requested that the server warm up my food, but I was in a bit of a hurry so I just ate it as it was. Families with kids seem to like this place, as well as older people, but I find most of the food to be pretty bland. And this location badly needs to be remodeled. They tore out the carpet a while ago (that was good) but left a polished cement floor. The tables are old and it's one of those places where everything just generally feels sticky. I'm sorry I don't enjoy the food more, because it's one of the few places left where you can get this type of food. But in the end, my meat loaf lunch with a soft drink was well over $20 when I added a tip. I know everything is expensive now, but that's a lot of money for an unsatisfying lunch. read more

We took a drive out to Castle Rock to pick up my eyeglasses and decided it was time to have a bite to eat. Since we wound up near the outlet mall we figured we'd find someplace we could both have something to chow down on. There we found Black Eyed Pea. The menu selection was Nirvana for my guy. He was raised on southern cooking and he was excited at the prospects available. He ordered Grilled Catfish in a lemon butter sauce and I found a broccoli cheese potato. Mmmm... The entrees come with sides and they have 15 selections to choose from. I've never tried fried green tomatoes so I ordered that as an appetizer. They were coated in cornmeal and fried. Very tasty! The greatest part of the meal? My other half was able to eat and not once was there a sound from his side of the table That's a good thing really. Having teeth pulled has limited his meal choices and here, he can actually eat and enjoy dinner time with me. The BEP has a bar which was a surprise and they serve dessert. Sadly I was too full to try any. Next time for sure! The best part is the food available reminds my guy of his family meals and since he's waiting for his teeth situation to be remedied really soon he plans on eating his way through this menu. Food was a 4+, server was a negative so average out to a 2. Menu is quite extensive and descriptions of the offerings was much more food than we wanted for a light lunch. As soon as we sat down, server was there offering starters and other extras we did not want. I ordered half and half with soup and Caesar salad both of which were delicious, others in my party split a sandwich order which they both said was very good. When the server brought the order within a reasonable amount of time, she dropped the orders and we didn't see her again until it was time to clear plates and kind of inquire about dessert. Back to the food, the clam chowder (New England) was excellent, among the best I have had in the area and it was served hot which is not often the case.
