I haven't dined at this restaurant for a long time since my previous experiences didn't meet my expectations. However, a good friend of mine strongly recommended to me that I come back and try again. She said, she is a frequent customer and loves their ramen noodles so much. So I decided to give it a shot. I ordered Blackbeard ramen noodles. Wow!! I was so surprised!! Good surprise, though. I noticed that the taste of broth really changed in a good way. Not greasy or oily at all. Very flavorful and delicious. Toppings were as great as before. Chashu melted in my mouth. I also liked their Shumai because they were big and meaty. My friend loved both Chicken & Pork Chashu Buns, too. He said, they were one of the best bun appetizers that he has ever tried among other Japanese cuisine restaurants. This experience definitely overwrites my previous impressions in positive way!!
Decided to order again since this was our go to place. Delicious!! I'm so happy to say the charsu is back to its original delicious form. It's tender and flavorful. The chadon is also amazing with a Smokey flavor. We did pick up but the inside still looks cute and my meal was ready when promised.
A true hole-in-the-wall, but the food was amazing! It's a small restaurant with a fun menu. For appetizers, we ordered edamame and chicken gyoza. For entrées, we had the Blackbeard Ramen, Tonkotsu Ramen, and Tom Yum Ramen. Each broth had its own unique flavor, and all of them were delicious. Portions come in either regular or large, and both were very filling. The service was good and the food came out quickly. Definitely recommend and will be coming back.
I've been here multiple times, and it's consistently delicious every single visit. If you enjoy spicy ramen, the red curry ramen is absolutely amazing. I've also tried the Blackbeard ramen and the tonkotsu ramen, and both are just as delicious in their own way. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Definitely a go-to spot for great ramen.
I came to this ramen restaurant at least 3 years ago and finally made my way back here! The ramen was 10x better than what I remembered previously! I ordered the Blackbeard Ramen, omg filled with flavor and I think the charred garlic gave the dish a Smokey flavor to it, which I loved!! We also had the traditional Tonkotsu Ramen, which was also really good. However, the ramen didn't come with the egg, which was unusual and were notified that it was an extra charge and needed to ask when ordering. For an appetizer, we got pork buns which were supper fresh and flavorful! Overall, a great place for authentic ramen! There is about 7 tables and a bar table section. In the summer months, they have a patio with igloo seating. There is a parking lot attached as well as street parking.
My younger son has recently begun loving Ramen. We came here on a Friday as a family. All of our appetizers were super good! The pork bao buns were perfect. I had the Miso Ramen (a nice variation!) and added tofu. My husband had the Blackbeard Ramen: the broth was delish! By the time I asked to taste it that's all that was left. Both my kids got the traditional Tonkotsu Ramen and added egg. My younger loved the fish cake. Glad we tried it! Had some leftovers too and it was still good.
12/14/23 This was on my list of ramen places to try for a little while. Finally got around to going and was disappointed... Tonkotsu Gyokai Ramen - The ramen smelled great. Tonkotsu and Fish Dashi should have blown my mind with flavor, but this was bland... The Chashu was not pork belly, it was dry pork loin like... That was such a let down... Blackbeard Ramen - Smelled the garlic but again it was bland... Service was ok, the waitress was polite but not very helpful. It was like she didn't know what she was selling... The location was very desolate... It was actually a little creepy in the dark. Inside was very clean, but seems old and not maintained...
This is hands down the best ramen I've had in the area. I love the ambience, it's small with tables and a bar area decorated by really cool Japanese inspired modern art. The service was great, our waitress was very accommodating. The ramen was the perfect noodle to broth ratio and this was a regular size. The egg was cooked perfectly and the nice kick the chili oil I added hit the spot. I want to try their entire menu!!
Came here on a cold winter night looking to warm up with some Ramen. The place is a very small spot with very few tables. It was an early Friday night and all the tables were full but we were able to snag the next two top. The place is byob and they had some decent music playing. The menu was pretty limited. There were limited apps and a few of the ramen bowls to choose from. I don't know everything about Ramen so I definitely needed a cheat sheet for some of the descriptions. We had edamame, steamed veggie gyoza, a pork bun, Veggie Miso Ramen, and the Blackbeard Ramen. All were very good. I like how they had the option to do the regular size or the large. The regular size is definitely enough for one person. It was very good and filling. The veggie miso was made with almond milk broth which was different but was very tasty. It's the only vegetarian /vegan ramen on the menu. All of the other broths are pork based and I do wish there was a vegetable or chicken based broth option to swap out for the pork. Nonetheless, both ramens were very flavorful and very traditional. The pork bun was small but hit the spot for a craving of a bao bun. Definitely a place to go or order takeout on a cold night. There is a small parking lot next door and if that's full you'll have to find street parking.
After seeing so many positive reviews, we decided to go check out this place. It was rather small inside, but since we got there right when they opened, we didn't have any issue getting a table. We got hot green tea, which was not complimentary. I was a bit disappointed, but hey... We ordered Pork Buns as appetizers, and two of them came per order. The sauce they had on the buns were really sweet, a bit too sweet in my opinion. Possibly they just poured too much on it. For ramen, we got the Blackbeard Ramen in regular, and Green Curry Ramen in large. The portion didn't really look that different between the regular and large. The ramen bowl was a bit taller for the large size, but still... The ramen came with a good amount of straight noodles, but it felt a bit undercooked, and it tasted a bit like undercooked dough, if you know what I mean? Not a fan. We both added a soft boiled egg to our order, and they were pretty nice. Perfectly cooked with gooey center. The broth was a-ok, nothing to rave about. Both ramens were nice, but not great. Not memorable in mu opinion. Maybe my expectation was too high...
Had dinner at Blackbeard Ramen this past Sunday night. A friend of mine swears it's the best ramen, so I went there to compare. The restaurant was full, but fortunately a table was leaving as we got in, so we were seated immediately. The decor is pretty minimal, but I did like funko pops and the prints of the famous ramen loving anime characters. I got to try the regular tonkotsu ramen and tonkotsu gyokai ramen. The tonkotsu broth was very rich and porky. I liked it. The tonkotsu gyokai has some fish dashi mixed in, but it tasted like they added liquid smoke to the broth. I did not like it. The noodles we got were straight and a bit undercooked, they tasted a little like flour. But they did give you a lot of noodles. The chashu pork was marinated well, but overcooked, almost mushy. The wood ear mushrooms were sliced thin, and the fried onions were a bit sweet. I liked those topping. I got the spicy "sauce" on the side, but it looked like it was just chili flakes with a small amount of chili oil. My friend mentioned that I should have ordered wavy noodles instead of whatever I got, but I didn't know it was an option. (no wavy noodles on the menu that I saw) Next time I go, I would get the regular tonkotsu ramen (not gyokai), with wavy noodles, and I would add a soft boiled egg. It was OK, but not the best like my friend tried to sell me on.
Best ramen in town!! I love this place-the vegetarian/vegan ramen is the best thing ever. It's the best thing to have a cold night in NJ but honestly I'd go in 80 degree weather! The only downside is that pricing is kinda on the high side for noodles and every time I go service is ok, not bad, but something is usually slightly wrong. They are good about fixing though! I came here tonight with a friend, and we started off with the pork buns and went right into the ramen. I'd say the prices are great , the place is small and I can imagine with the weather a wait time could happen, but we pretty much got seated right away. I'd say the service was nothing out of the ordinary and the food was great for what you pay for. No real issues would definitely go back ! read more

Delicious and affordable! I'm so glad I discovered this ramen joint in the Fort Lee area. We ordered the Tonkotsu Gyokai Ramen ($12 regular) and Blackbeard ($13 regular). Both were excellent options, but I highly recommend trying the Tonkotau Gyokai if you're looking for something unique! It has a fish dashi soup base that I normally don't find in ramen, but it's packed with so much flavor. The Blackbeard is also a great choice if you're looking for something safe- it has the classic pig bone broth common in most ramen joints, but has a nice touch of roasted black garlic. Overall, I was very pleased with my meal and look forward to coming back in the future. read more

Visited this place after driving by a few times. The appearance at first glance isn't mind blowing but once you are seated (outdoor) you find they have a cool patio lush with plants and what looks like home grown vegetables & herbs. Really really loved that. the menu wasn't overwhelming which I also liked - after browsing the ramen options I ordered the red curry. No need to add extra spicy as the dish was spiced perfectly enough to enjoy. The pork belly was tender and added mushrooms definitely added a nice texture. My only gripe (if that) was with the noodles. They had a somewhat undercooked and pasty feel to them. However- I still really enjoyed my dish. All in all 4 out of 5 and would definitely recommend. read more

Likely the best tonkotsu ramen spot in NJ. Ramen is favorite of mine--I've been to the top spots in NY and some small places throughout Japan, and this holds up well to the Ippudo and Totto's. Of course, can't compare to Ichiran, as their broth is on another level, but this is also much more affordable. I've probably been here 5+ times and always had positive experiences--never had to wait too long for a seat, parking was ok (street if not the small lot), food came quickly, etc. In terms of food, I consistently get their pork-based ramen, which is rich and flavorful. You can tell a lot about the quality just from drinking the soup. Many places have a much more diluted flavor profile, meaning they probably didn't cook the broth long enough. Doesn't seem like you can adjust the noodle texture, but the default here is fine. The char-siu here is also very good--it seems like they put the effort to torch them before serving, a nice detail that also imparts a smoky flavor. Pricing is also very fair and much less than what you would pay for in NY spots. In terms of value, this is definitely a 5/5. Overall, a great spot for ramen enthusiasts and newcomers alike. read more

Nothing like good ramen on a cold rainy day! Blackbeard has the best ramen I've had in quite some time; honestly. From the broth, to the noodles, the seasoning, intensified deliciousness packed in a bowl. I do wish they had vegetarian options; I don't think I saw any on the menu. The place is tiny & there's a constant flow of traffic. Which I did not mind because it's very cozy. I would definitely recommend paying a visit if you're in town; you won't regret it! I came here a few times now with my colleagues for lunch. Thankfully, pretty easy to get a table but not a lot of space inside so I could see it filling up quickly. If you get a ramen, the gyoza and rice dishes are half priced and if you check in on Yelp, you get a free regular soda. I have gotten the large tonkotsu ramen (it's only $1 more about yet you get 50% more noodles) both times and you HAVE to get the marinated EGG, which is very salty and soft boiled. The egg is definitely my favorite part of the dish. The noodles are a bit on the thinner side. My friend got the miso ramen and said the tonkotsu was better but then the miso ramen had the thick noodles I prefer. The gyoza is steamed which is okay. I prefer the fried method usually but at least steamed is healthier. Got the pork rice dish and we split it. Very good and very filling. The service is usually pretty quick so you're in and out and they're definitely nice. Will be returning for sure. read more
Was craving some ramen for lunch and saw this highly rated place and decided to give it a shot. I have a go to ramen spot was looking to try something new - and I'm glad we did! The location is small, as many ramen spots are, but they have a parking lot which is a plus and it has very whimsical decor. Anime playing on the tv. We had to wait a little to be seated but the host gave us a menu to look over so we were ready to order as soon as we sat down. I ordered the miso ramen and my boyfriend got the green curry. Both were super good. Not overly salty, filled with flavor, and noodles cooked perfectly. The pork was so tender and tasted delicious. Overall a really good bowl of ramen that hit the spot. read more

Broth running down your beard goodness! Soups can be transformative. Warming to the soul when feeling down or on a cold day. They can take you back to simpler times. They can be restorative and regenerative (i.e., hangovers). However, making soups that possess these qualities is like making magic potions in a cauldron that's been brewing for eons. This place makes magic soup. The first thing you notice when you enter is the decor. The restaurant, which only seats about 20 total and is always busy, has a large screen TV on the wall playing Anime shows and has a wall complete with toys and Japanese nature art. The staff is always friendly and although it is a busy establishment, we always get seated quickly. Then is the money shot. The reason you get off the couch, get dressed and bear the elements. The food, in particular the ramen. The menu has about 15 or so items. It's simple and everything is good. We always order the Chadon (pork over white rice) and the Gyoza to start. Then the ramen with egg to cap it off. And the ramen....what can be said. The broth, the pork, the noodles, the veggies, the perfectly cooked egg...the combination takes you somewhere else. A place where everything seems all right. Where the world is a better place. A place where you become a pirate with a black beard that is full of broth and this soup is the reward of a long day of pirating. All this and it's not at all expensive. read more
Soup dumplings or ramen? It's next to Petite Soo Chow. Decision, Decision, Decision. Well, a bowl of ramen wins in a cold day! Came here around 11:40am on a Tues and the place was empty! Got a large bowl of tonkontu ramen, the cha siu rice and the vegetables curry rice. How can anyone pass the $5 rice dishes! The ramen soup was very flavorful and not as greasy as some other places. The large bowl had lots of noodles! The cha siu rice was larger than that one you get in Mitsuwa and a must-have! Service was fast and great! read more

Very quaint restaurant. Not many options on the menu but they know what they're good at and keep it that way. The pork buns were out of this world. I don't understand some of these "I hate this place go to menya" reviews as well as one review about a Coke Can. I was there, the customer was very rude! I highly recommend giving this place a try! read more
Ramen is the best thing to have in this fall weather.We had the spicy tonkotsu ramen.The broth was perfectly spicy and very flavorful.The noodles were great.I got a topping of narito fish cakes which were tasty.Good service.The location is good and they have parking which is a plus.Give this place a try and you wont be disappointed.It is on par with ramen places in the city. read more

I'm glad that we arrived a little before 12 because after that, there were no more seats. The place is small with limited seats so try to arrive here a bit early if you don't want to wait In line. Soo I was super excited to have found this place on Yelp and I really was looking forward in trying their Blackbeard Ramen, but unfortunately they didn't serve it on that day... So I went for their Tonkotsu Gyokai ramen and it also was another great alternative option. The broth was flavorful and not salty, and the ramen's texture was quite good. They also gave a table hook for me to place my bag. Very convienent! All in all, I had a nice experience here and would be coming back! ^_^ read more
Why did I only find out about it today? The texture of the ramen is not of the instant noodles. I like the more aldente noodles and it came out to my liking. When you check in you get a free soda but you can instead ask for a free hot tea! The only problem I had today was they charged an item that did not come to our table but waitress was able to fix the check. I would come back for this probably monthly or bi-weeekly. Yeah. They make really great ramen. You can't go wrong with the place, their ramen is jam packed with flavor. They serve great quantities for the amount your are paying for. Good service as well. I truly enjoy it. Can't really say anything negative about them. I don't think they are perfect or the best I've ever had but man they are really really good. Solid 3-stars. My friends and I ordered 3 different ramens--miso, black garlic tonkatsu, and tinkatsu gyokai. They were very strange about letting us order the tonkatsu. The server argued that they wanted to save it for other customers so asking customers to order something else--what?? We came in around 8:45, seated at 9, and the restaurant closed at 9:30. Who were they saving the ramen for? My two other friends didn't order it, so the server went to ask permission to let me have it. So strange! Black garlic tonkatsu wasn't bad. Rich and flavorful. I liked the chasu but felt the cut was very thin. Wish it had more. The miso ramen was ok. Great miso taste but the dashi was pretty pronounced and I didn't care for it. The tonkatsu gyokai was a different story! Our friend complained it was a bit salty and she loves ramen. She got a headache and didn't continue eating it. We decided to try some. It was overwhelming with fish flavor and salt!! It tasted like smoked salted fish with no hint of pork. I'd never had ramen taste like that and none of us liked it. 1-star for this dish. Solid ramen joint. Perfect egg. I'm not a fan of straight thin noodles but they were still pretty good! Amazing broth. The dumplings were meh though, and had some uncooked noodle pieces stuck to them... I'm sure it was just an anomaly, but I wouldn't get them again. Definitely get the ramen though! Had the Tonkatsu ramen (L) and loved the noodles. The noodles are quite thin and chewy. I didn't actually like the broth that much, but broth preference is very personal. It wasn't too salty but the combination of flavors didn't agree with me. Service was prompt and food came out quickly during dinner hours. Price is very fair. Will be back one day. read more
My cousin always come here and recommended ths place to try. I came herewith my Boo Boo on a rainy during our winter break from work. We made sure to come before the lunch crowd came. We were easily able to find street parking even though they have a small parking lot. I got the fatty pork soup and Boo Boo got the spicy miso ramen. We also shared the hand made gyoza and I got a free soda with a yelp check-in. The ramens tasted legit. They took time in preparing the broth. Its sad that there very limited seating. If only they had a bigger location and closer to where I live. The ramen may be worth a drive. This is makes my top 5 ramens in the tri-state. They had naruto on the TV when I was there but that didn't get them a 5th star. read more

Green curry (extra egg of course) was delicious and packed with flavor. The establishment is small but cutely decorated with funko pops and anime trinkets. The staff was very welcoming, the prices were fair, and again the food was very good. Red curry is available and not on the menu (spicy and also delicious). Blackbeard Ramen was highly recommended to me about a week ago so I decided to try it out with my husband. We ordered: 2 pork buns, steamed gyozo (not pictured) and we both had the Tonkotsu Gyokai Ramen. When I tell you it was all fresh and amazing flavor and ingredients. We will definitely be returning. The menu is not extensive but quality over quantity :) Overall, the ramen is delicious. Broth is not too thick and is flavorful....i love how they char-grilled the pork slices , gave a little smokey flavor to the meat. Considering how there are not a lot of ramen choices in the neighbourhood, I am happy with this place and will definitely come back again to try other ramen. read more

I've had my fill of the local ramen places and hadn't yet found one that really hit the spot. Today while driving down Gorge Road, I caught sight of the sign for this new restaurant. I hadn't had lunch yet, and stopped in to give it a try. I ordered the green curry and after the first mouthful, knew that the Ramen Gods have answered my prayers! The broth is crazy flavorful and savory. The waiter asked how everything was and I told him it was amazing! He laughed and said after the first time he had the green curry, he made sure he had some every day for a month. I'm tempted to do the same! Enjoy the edamame appetizer as you let the noodle sop up some of the hot broth unless you are an uber al dente fan. Add a few extras, like another half serving of noodles and chasu. Keep some change after you pay the bill and play with the panda and kitty peekaboo banks on the way out. read more
3.75 to be exact. Blackbeard Ramen is a small establishment, but it definitely knows how to great unique and flavorful bowls of ramen! This place has only has a bunch of tables for two (that can be combined since they are similar sizes) and seats by the kitchen, so any larger party would be difficult to accommodate when it is busy. The parking lot here is very small and it is shared with Petite Soo Chow so the lot may be full during peak hours. What I liked was how the place looked when I came in. I can see and reference many of the nerdy video game references on the walls (and especially the Psyduck Starry Night painting in the bathroom)! I came in on a Saturday night and waited approximately 15 minutes. Once I sat down, I decided to order their unique bowl of ramen, the Green Curry Ramen. Depending on how hungry you are, there is an option of getting a "large" bowl, which has 50% more noodles. Also, you are able to choose whether you want to have thin or think noodles and if you would like the noodles cooked firmly (al dente). I chose thin and al dente noodles here. I thought the thin noodles here were okay, but I was able to try my friend's thicker al dente noodles, which I definitely would prefer and choose to get next time. The ramen itself was very interesting. It has a spicy kick to it as you would imagine with green curry. Contrary to what you may think by the name, the broth is not as rich and creamy as I thought it would have been, but a lighter broth is what I personally prefer so I was fine with that. Also, note that the ramen does not come with an egg, so if make sure you order it if you want one. As a note, I thought the egg here was just okay, it did not taste anything or added to the flavor of the ramen. Service was great when I was here, and I would definitely return again to try their other offerings. read more

We haven't been here since the pandemic started, very excited to be back and found out that the food was just as good as I remembered. Green curry ramen is a must order if you come here. The broth is very flavorful, but not too greasy as most of the pork bone based soup. The coconut flavor compliments the soup base perfectly. Curry is light but not overpowering. Noodle was cooked al dente. Love it! read more

Nope, I asked the same question in person. They do use 2 different types of noodles depending on the broth that you order... and I will attest that they whip up some really great ramen regardless
