We visit this restaurant once a year while vacationing in Truro. Its got the best food..really a dining experience. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, tucked away in a private location. My nephews have been coming with us since they were young, they love the mussels. You need reservations..call a few days in advance to get the time slot you need. Has a nice bar area also. Been going here for years and have always loved it. Always felt it was as good as any of the best restaurants in New York. But there was something off this time. The usual dishes like the tuna bolognese and the chocolate pretzel desert were still outstanding but the other dishes I had lacked the finesse and flavor profile combinations that have always been winners. Also, we had to pay for our bread, which is new and odd since the prices are high end and sitting at the table with nothing presented to us as a welcoming gesture, in a restaurant with this kind of profile, is a mistake. The burger was actually pretty bad: flat, not juicy (ordered medium rare), the Gorgonzola hard and cold, the bun cold and insipid, the tomato mealy. As for the fried oysters, tasty but overpriced. Is this the best restaurant on The Cape?!? I haven't tried all of this season's Must Dine venues in P'Town etc, but I know that every time we visit, Eric Larson's cooking is consistently satisfying. Every dish is somehow homey ... and yet also a little exotic at the same time. Here are the secret ingredients keywords we look for now: Local honey; Wild mushrooms; 'Candied...;' extract. This time I finally broke down and got the bone-in ribeye. The one with Truffle Butter. I had always been intimidated by this dish because, well it's $45 -- and we're not in NYC! Tonight it was paired with Pommes Anna and some unctuous spinach with blue cheese. I added a glass of Emblom Cabernet and Raspberry Pavlova to finish for a great meal. Worth every penny--and I liked how he playfully added back in mainstays of 1920s Russian Emigre Cuisine to create a completely 21st Century dining experience! read more

I've always considered this a five star dining experience but last nights meal missed the mark on so many levels. I started with the butternut squash soup, the flavor was very off and tasted more of cabbage than butternut squash. The burger was cooked to order but very soggy on the underside, not sure where all the liquid came from. This was Very unappetizing from a taste and texture perspective. My daughter in law ordered the tuna ceviche appetizer and she said it was ok but her main meal of duck breast and lentils was substandard as the duck was over cooked and the lentils were over-spiced. The positive in this dining experience was the service, our waitress was wonderful and could not have been more attentive. Stunningly fantastic. We dined at Stars at Chatham Bars Inn last night and Blackfish tonight. The difference was night and day. The one place my friend and I were determined to dine at during our recent vacation was Blackfish. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a friendly hostess who seated us immediately. Our waiter was attentive and informative about the dishes, and the rest of the staff was just as attentive and hospitable. We started with a strawberry basil martini and an elderberry gin martini. DELICIOUS. I'm not a big fan of vodka, but my drink was insanely good with the perfect hint of basil. I was pleasantly surprised with how well the vodka taste was blended in. Given that this was our first time at Blackfish, we decided to go all out on the appetizers: oysters with a Caribbean mignonette, a tomato & burrata platter, bone marrow, and mussels. Every single dish was a completely different and mouth watering experience. The oysters were completely transformed with such a unique and delicious mignonette. The tomatoes were plump and juicy, and were complimented with the creamy burrata. The bone marrow was served with toast points and was completely devoured the moment it arrived - cooked and seasoned to perfection. The mussels were the star of the show as they were bathed in a creamy sauce with bits of sausage throughout. We could not get enough. For our entrees (yes, we went crazy with no regrets), we ordered the lamb sausage with rigatoni and fresh Pecorino Romano and the lobster with gnocchi. The lamb dish was extremely unique with a Middle Eastern spice to it. The lobster melted in your mouth and the gnocchi soaked up all the taste of lobster and butter. Out of this world. I absolutely cannot wait for my next visit to MA just to experience the magic all over again. read more

Wow, what to say about Blackfish. This is a favorite amongst my friends and I. The atmosphere is great, everyone is having a good time and the crowd is diverse and fun-loving. The food is delicious and the cocktails are unreal. My friends who have tried an array of wines from the wine list said that those were awesome as well. It isn't inexpensive, but it is so worth the money. The staff is special too and makes the upscale casual environment a unique one. read more

I was sadly underwhelmed at Blackfish. Given the high ratings, I was expecting more. The restaurant has a very cool atmosphere and attractive interior and the service was excellent. The food was lackluster for most of our party of 10, however. Given that it was $600+, I just don't think it was worth the money (and two in our party ordered burgers). I had the seafood stew. I expected more seafood, but was disappointed that the fish that came in the dish was so small and flaked off, that it was really more like a soup. There were a few rings of calamari, one tiny piece of whole fish (the size of a mini peppermint patty). Of the three mussels that came in the stew, one was not opened and had to be discarded. There were also three cherrystone clams which were so small that I wasn't sure there was actually anything in them. I'm sure the fish was all fresh, but unfortunately the broth was so spicy and overwhelmed by the Andouille sausage that you could not taste the seafood. The one standout was the piece of garlic bread that came with the stew. It was buttery and delicious. I also tasted the striped bass (again, fresh fish but disappointingly bland) and the the sole with caper sauce, which was crisp but lacking in flavor with absolutely no hint of the promised lemon caper sauce. The fried oyster appetizer, at $14, featured six soggy and tepid oysters - not at all the crispy and light ones we expected. My dad was happy with his oysters on the half shell, but that is not a testament to anything the chef did! My mother had the chocolate tart with a pretzel crust for dessert. It was dry, overly salty and lacked any chocolately richness. The salty element was not balanced by a sweet element. Again, disappointing. Our waitress was terrific - attentive, friendly, and very informative. She steered us away from a lamb special that featured a fatty piece of meat (2/3rd fat, she said.....which left us wondering why they would ever choose that cut?) and brought out the meals for the two kids in our party early. Maybe we hit the restaurant on an off night, but I would not bother going back again based on our experience and the relatively high prices for what we got. read more

Blackfish is the best restaurant in Truro and one of the best on the entire Outer Cape. The menu is unique, interesting, and with something for all tastes. The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable in this converted blacksmith shop. The rabbit ragu is outstanding but if you're into dishes that are more conventional, various seafoods are available. Blackfish gets a lot of their ingredients from local farmers so the preparations will always be fresh with a native flare. I've gotten into the habit of pairing a couple of appetizers such as starting with oysters on the half-shell, then having pan-seared scallops with the house salad. My only complaint, as someone who lives in the area, is that they're not open in the off-season. I would also recommend making reservations, especially on the weekends. Service is excellent. Blackfish is by far the best restaurant in this part of the Cape. We make it a point eat here every year we visit and make sure to call a few weeks prior for a reservation. We enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine, with excellent service though out our meal. The onion tart was delicious, melting in your mouth and unlike another reviewer, mine was not too salty and I am sensitive to too much salt so would have noticed. We also has the buttermilk fried oysters and they vanished as our family all loved them - perfectly cooked and not greasy! My daughter had the tuna bolognese which I've had in the past and it was very good although rich, so she ate half and got the rest packed for home. My husband had the seafood stew, like a zuppa de pesce, and it was fresh and vibrant with a delicious sauce, again a large portion and we took the leftover home. I had the special tuna and it was cooked perfect, rare in the middle. We made sure to save room for desert and were not disappointed. My daughter enjoyed the pannacotta and I had the bread pudding - both very good. read more

We ventured out from Provincetown and what a big mistake! The appetizers were incorrect and were very salty - so disappointing! The main course came and four of the five came - we waited another 20 minutes for the fifth meal. The meals all were very disappointing and we would never recommend the restaurant... Love Black Fish! My favorite thing to go and sit for dinner in the lively bar. If your lucky you will get a seat at the bar. The amazing bar tender/oyster man/surfer Curtis will mix you up great drink. Best fried oysters harvested by Curtis. Wonderful burger with home made chips. Spend time watch the Red Sox game and strike up conversation with all people who frequent Black Fish. It will become a favorite stop or hang out anytime your lucky enough to find yourself in Truro! read more

Wonderful dining experience. Amazing food, service, and ambience. For appetizer, we had the little neck clams as well as the baby kale salad w/ white anchovies - both incredible. For my entree, I had the panko crusted sole with asparagus & puréed cauliflower - delicious! For dessert, I had the dark chocolate tartlet with salted caramel pretzel crust & hazelnuts - one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life. I highly recommend this restaurant. The food here is absolutely amazing!!! This is my 3rd year coming here and the food never disappoints. This time we had the fried oysters for an appetizer and the bread with white bean spread, which was the only disappointment. The bread used to be complementary and now they charge for it wish was a little disappointing, but just as good as we remembered it. If you go I highly recommend the mussels the broth them come in is so savory and comforting. The fish almandine was amazing as well with the cauliflower mash. Good food in a nice, if strange, space that feels almost like you're dining in a bunker in an underground jungle. The vibe is a lot more raucous than the aesthetic would suggest, and we were surprised at how loud it was. Sure, it was a Saturday night, but I have never eaten at a place where the food was this good/nice/expensive and had to literally yell across our table of four in order for everyone to hear the conversation. Food was really good. I tried the tuna bolognese since it sounded so unusual, and it was unusual. Glad I tried it, but I'm not sure I'd get it again. The lobster gnocchi looked great, and everyone was happy with their meals. The waitress was very nice and knowledgeable. We make it a rule to eat out just about every night while we're on the Cape. Because this spot is just around the corner from our house, it sees alot of us.... and it never disappoints. Over the course of the last week we had tuna nicose salad (with delicious oil cured tuna), an amazing lobster/lamb appetizer, mushroom pasta, heirloom tomato salad and the mussels, among other things. It was mostly amazing. The mushroom pasta was not my favorite, but shame on me for ordering a vegetarian dish in Cape Cod. Great wine list and consistently good service too. read more

Blackfish, No. Truro, the Upper Cape: A Perfectly Executed Evening of French and American Seasonal Cuisine After an absence of some five years, we have just finished a lovely-though-very-warm full-sun Mid-Sept.week on the backbone of the Old Cape Cod, the lower and upper reaches of Rt.6A, from Sandwich to No.Truro. During our stay, we had four "fine dining" dinners at : Inayo (Yarmouthport), Ceraldi (Wellfleet), Abba ( Orleans) and Blackfish ( No. Truro.) By far the star of the week was Blackfish. (The others I have posted separately, elsewhere on this site.) BF is located in a small 18th c. clapboard Cape near the tiny local P.O. Both the bar and the two dining rooms are hot spots for a very diverse crowd of locals, dressed casually but with flair and artistic style. The main dining room is dark and low lit, very romantic and charming, filled with 40-60 yr. olds, many 4-tops and trios. Everyone seemed to be comfortably settled in and enjoying themselves immensely.A flowering garden area is visible out the rear large windows, and attractive original sea-themed artwork is lit on the dark walls. Table bread is a warm house-made roasted garlic, delivered with a lagnappe of white bean puree and EVOO. Bantam cider and a Cosmo with a very flavorful cucumber infused vodka- were our refreshing beverages on a hot Indian Summer Thursday evening. I began with a perfectly created generous disc of Foie Gras Torchon, redolent of its brandy maceration and served with a punchy local berry compote. My idea of Absolute Heaven. My Love also had his Nirvana, a striking plate of seared local sea scallops on a Parmesan Fonduta with mini Parmesan Tuiles. We both succumbed to the fully authentic description of the (Southern French )Bouillabaisse, and our deftly skilled waiter never missed a step, delivering our steaming bowls along with our requested extra broth and rouille. Truly a plentiful bounty of the loveliest of lovingly a la minute- added shellfish, squid and haddock. (It really is not an exaggeration when I say that the squid was the softest and silkiest I have ever had. Man, how I wish I could send every chef to the Blackfish kitchen to learn how to handle squid.) My Love finished his bowl with great gusto; I reserved half of mine for later because my advance research had shown me that their desserts were actually well worth ordering. (Boring, unimaginative desserts are found far too frequently in fine dining restaurants, imo.) The Corn themed sweets plate was a 'Corn Pudding' (kind of like a light sugared Indian cornmeal Bavarian timbale) with Maple Candied Pecans and Corn Ice Cream. A perfect ending. There were people waiting for our table so we rushed out, but next visit, we hope to meet the talented chef and have a few meals here (Certainly no need to sample elsewhere in the area, with this well balanced and varied menu and the perfect execution we so enjoyed!) All of the staff, from Hostesses to wait people and 'bread and bussers'- were welcoming and deftly efficient and professional. While the food my dinner companions enjoyed was quite delicious, this restaurant is not very vegetarian-friendly, and certainly not vegan friendly. Even their bread has eggs in it. And they are not willing to make something special or amend their menu offerings very much. As a vegan, I'm used to having minimal options, but this place seemed to have slimmer options than most. I had the beet plate without the curd (good, but very overpriced), and their house salad with the mustard vinaigrette. They call it a salad, but it's really just Bibb lettuce with 2 grape tomatoes. So also not worth how much it was. Overall, I was disappointed. The waitress wasn't very friendly. The drinks were good, though, and it's worth noting that everyone else enjoyed their meals. They could make more of an effort to accommodate both vegetarians (only 2 appetizers and 1 entree) and vegans read more

cool mellow bar scene... very comfortable atmosphere. great burgers but I usually enjoy the mushrooms, the rabbit and the duck. ohh yeah, and the pork belly. Ive had a few EXCELLENT ribeyes there too, usually drenched in truffle butter. Yum. since these are my friends, you should take my review with a grain of salt, but I'll stand by it.
