Dined at Blackfish last night with my husband. The building itself is beautiful inside. Bar area is cozy, small bar with 7 or 8 seats, plus some booth seating. Main dining area has beautiful exposed beams and brick. Secondary dining area is mostly windows, greenhouse like. As other yelpers have mentioned it was very loud within, but the waitress did a great job making sure we could hear her and understood the specials she told us. After reading other reviews we were really looking forward to our meal at Blackfish, and the menu was extremely promising with fresh, local and organic ingredients. Unfortunately, the meal, although it had some highlights, fell short of our high expectations. We started with the fennel and carmelized onion tart with duck prosciutto. This was served with farmer's cheese and a light salad. A bite of the tart alone, was so-so, but when mixed with the other ingredients was quite tasty. We also tried the foie gras...I found it a bit heavier than others I've had, but my husband enjoyed it. The fruit compote served with it was quite tasty. For our entrees, I ordered the lobster with gnocchi and wild mushrooms. This was by far the highlight of the evening. It was absolutely delicious, melt in your mouth....My husband ordered the duck entree...Crispy skin on the outside, but the meat itself was very chewy and tough to cut Drinks were also disappointing! If I'm paying $12 for a martini, I expect some good stuff. My first order was the strawberry basil martini...it was refreshing with a strong basil taste, but besides from having a pinkish tint there was not even a hint of strawberry flavor. I ordered a cappuccino martini for my second drink...on the menu it said vodka, espresso, baileys, white godiva..it tasted like dirty dishwater...should have sent it back. For dessert we ordered the chocolate torte with pretzel crust. Again it was just so-so, nothing I'm dying to try again. Overall our experience at Blackfish was a dissapointing one. It tries hard to raise the bar for dining in the area, but their menu is largely a work of fiction, and fails to pack a punch. read more

I want to give it 4.5 because I'm kinda a jerk and want to say that the lighting was too low to read the wine list- lol. Otherwise, what about the food wasn't perfect? The pork belly confit? Pretty perfect. Halibut- VERY perfect. Skate? Perfect. The lovely waitress? - best service I've had in years. OK- maybe the dessert was a tad lackluster? Another five stars for Blackfish. This time I returned with just my boyfriend. With no reservation and an hour and a half wait for the dining room, we snagged two chairs in the bar area. We shared the creamy clam and potato appetizer, which was extremely rich and flavorful. Note: in my first review last summer, I mentioned the lack of butter for bread. They have it if you ask. I ordered the tuna Bolognese for my main and Zack got a burger. About ten minutes later, the waiter came by and apologized- they had run out of patties. A tad disappointing but not a problem, if anything it means the meat they use is extremely fresh. We decided to forego another entree and share the tuna, which ended up being a perfect amount of food. I cannot stress enough how unique and delicious this entree is. Hints of cinnamon, lemon, cream, tomato and herb make for a truly incredible flavor. With some room for dessert, we indulged in a blackberry bread pudding with brandy ice cream. One bottle of wine, appetizer, entree, dessert, tax, tip = $100 even. Worth every penny. read more

My wife noted (accurately) that, for the Cape, the menu is a little light on seafood options. So. Maybe High expectations are at fault here. But... The good: Frisée salad was excellent , though there was a hint of a ham and cheese sandwich about it. But still delicious. The duck egg (soft boiled then fried) was tasty. The fried oyster appetizer had 6 very small oysters , but they were perfectly cooked with a lovely dipping sauce. The squid pasta and the duck leg confit were excellent. The fair: the panko crusted sole was somewhat greasy but the fish was fresh. The mashed cauliflower was delicious and the asparagus nicely cooked. The ugly: what should have been the best dish of all, butter poached lobster with gnocchi, was tasteless. And the portion was quite small with hardly any lobster meat. As a $39 entree, I expected to be "wowed", but was not pleased with this pricey selection at all. The service was okay. I thought our waiter was condescending, but the other members of our party thought he might be new. Either way, we felt rushed and were in and out within 75 minutes when we were hoping for a leisurely meal. Servers attempted to remove our plates several times though we were still dining. I would give this place another try, since everyone else seems to think so highly of it, but we were disappointed on our first visit. read more

My husband and I ate at Blackfish for the 2nd time and we were not disappointed again! He started with the lightly fried oyster app and Loved them. "Very light" he said they were. I, not being a fan of food from shells, opted for the Beet carpaccio salad. Very delish! His entree was the double short rib w/garlic mashed. So good and had leftovers for lunch. I enjoyed the Panko pan-seared sole w/cauliflower mash. Hmmm yum. Capers were a nice touch. We took home the Pretzel crusted chocolate hazelnut deliciousness. Our service was good, not rushed. Water glass was always filled, it as a very warm night. We sat in the front room and it got loud as the room filled, but didn't really interfere with our conversation. Next time we rent in Truro, we will be back. read more

We've been to Blackfish thrice -- once last year and twice over the past week. Everytime we go, we are amazed. We summer on the Lower Cape every year and, hands down, Blackfish is the best restaurant on the Cape (sorry, PB). The fresh tuna bolognese are what we keep coming back for. Equally delicious are the rabbit ragu and the butter lobster gnocchi. We recommend the panna cotta for dessert. Writing this good review pains me because I know it will increase the number of competition for tables here. But, the word is out already and it's a shame to keep this as a hidden gem! read more

I can't wait to come back to Blackfish with just my guy and no one else. We came here on a hot summer evening in July on the recommendation of a bartender friend of ours who said it was well worth the visit, however, we had two sunkissed, tired and hungry kids in tow. This does not make for relaxing dining. Despite all that, we came anyway. Called at 4:30 to see if they could fit us in and they said they could, however, they were booked for the whole night. I had the soup of the day which was tomato based bisque, so delicious and my daughter ate most of it. The kids shared pasta and a burger. The burger was cooked to perfection and the meat, bun and toppings added to the delicious taste perfectly. The steak salad, my boyfriend said was delicious and I ordered crusted sole which was cooked to perfection with local vegetables. The decor and ambiance is really lovely and very welcoming with a hint of laid back hip vibe to it. In the back room it feels like you are in a greenhouse or under the sea or something. Very cosy and comfortable. I'd like to come back here on a winter night perhaps and sit back and relax and really take my time and enjoy the food and wine selection. I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

This restaurant is lucky to get one star. The food is delicious -- no complaints about the food. But the service ... yikes! When my partner and I were there a couple of months ago, a man at the next table dropped his wine glass, which spilled and shattered down my legs and under our table. We caught the attention of the busboy, who came over and tried to clean it up, but he could not see so my partner took the flashlight out of the busboy's hand and showed the busboy that the glass was all around my feet. Not much was done after that, and I had to finish my dinner not knowing whether I was cut or stained. Our waitress did not come to check on us (surprise, as it took her over ten minutes to get our bottle of wine at the beginning of dinner and our appetizers came before our wine!). The manager was not alerted. Nobody cared, and I could have been BLEEDING! Furthermore, the tables were too close together for me to safely get out of my seat without 1) getting cut and 2) disturbing the table next to us. When my partner called the manager the next day, the manager acted like it was our fault. If you care about service, don't frequent this establishment. read more

Damn good! Just a wonderful celebratory meal. This place is Cape Cod, not fancy, small, intimate in that you can end up talking to people seated on either side...about their food and they about yours. It's an old clapboard building, probably an old blacksmith shop...at least it looks that way. You can easily drive past it. The service, provided by Bishop, and others was great, Not rushed, but attentive and pleasant. The 4 of us split two salads, with my wife and I sharing a special roasted beet salad that was wonderful. Our friends ordered local greens, shaved radish, crispy shallot, with a sherry vinaigrette. Yum. One of us ordered pinko crusted sole, with mashed cauliflower, asparagus, and a lemon butter sauce. She ate every bit. Two of us ordered crispy skin haddock..ample portions, perfectly prepared. Our favorite entree was mine, a tuna bolognese, which, incredibly really was a Bolognese , and wonderful. It had a faint tuna flavor, but not pronounced...just magic with perfectly done pasta. I could and would have licked the plate if no one was watching. We ordered wine by the glass because of the varied dishes and tastes...from a Sauvignon Blanc to a Sangiovese. We were going to pass on desert, but weakened and split an amazing salted pretzel chocolate torte, that we shared. The table next to us had ordered an appetizer that had truffled egg, and the aroma, combined with the chocolate torte was a revelation. This is one of the two best restaurant experiences we've ever had on the Cape. We will definitely be back. I wish they were open into November this year! read more

I've been to Blackfish several times and have been impressed with the food and dining experience. Unfortunately last night was disappointing due to the Asian cockroach in my wife's meal. She ate 1/4 of the meal when the cockroach walked out from under the garnish. We immediately took the dish to a sever and showed her the problem. She took the dish to the kitchen and came back to our table, apologized, and offered to comp our meal (nice gesture). I was disappointed that the chef or manager/owner never came to the table to apologize for the cockroach in her food. My wife handle this well, did not make a scene and tried to put it out of her mind. Needless to say we can no longer go to Blackfish. In all my years of dining experiences I've never had a roach in my food or someone elses. This should be an embarrassment to Blackfish and someone other than the server should be apologizing to the customer. read more

This definitely was one of my favorite restaurants in the Cape. My family and I come here each year and the food is exquisite. The mussels were some of the best I've had in my life. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys good service and delicious food. read more

Love it! The decor is high end seafood/nautical theme without an ounce of cheesy. The rooms have good acoustics, so even though the tables are fairly close to each other you wont have to strain to hear the rest of your party. The back room is lined with windows looking into various bushes, grass, and other greenery. It's truly beautiful and makes a great back drop for a lovely meal. Food is fantastic. Best I've ever had here was n heirloom tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic special - yum! Lobster gnocchi is delicious, as is the sole. read more

I understand that restaurants here get busy on weekends, but the receptionist however never should neglect customers who are waiting to be seated. We were here waiting for 45 mins accordingly, and it's 10 mins before closing, no update on when we'll get a seat. Sorry, won't try to come back again even the food might be good. read more

1st time visit and had fantastic meal; very fresh, local, sustainable progressive menu;seared foi gras on brioche w rhubarb compote inspired flavors; same for scallop app; oyster app good but not great; both the lobster and sole entrees were superb; unrushed, pleasant wait staff; we had nice table tucked away in back corner but can see how other tables out in the room could get a bit loud. Agree its one of the best we've been to on the Cape. Surprised how tricky it was to find despite the straightforward directions. We will be back. Really enjoyed it read more

We had reservations for this restaurant at 9pm. It is that pretentious. It was so loud we couldn't even hear each other speaking. When we asked our sour waiter for vegetarian options she said the restaurant was not "vegetarian-friendly". I got a salad that was just lettuce drenched in mustard. And the whole time the waiter seemed like she wanted us gone. read more

Food was decent but kitchen is very inflexible. They only have a bowl of their soup, cup is not available. There are no dishes for children. They offer pasta with butter but when my son asked for rigatoni (instead of their wide flat noodle)the waiter told us the chef does not want to do it because he does not have enough rigatoni available. Went there Friday night for dinner, my overall opinion was positive but a few things were "just ok". We started with the littlenecks in thyme broth with fingerlings and lardon. This dish seemed to be missing something, the overpowering flavor was pork fat. Could barely taste the sea. I had the tuna bolognese, which was very tasty, pasta cooked perfectly and an innovative way to prepare tuna. The lemon shreds (?) on top were perfectly matched. Again, the overpowering taste of pork (pancetta) and tomatoes overrode any taste of the sea, but it was still very much enjoyed. My date had the seared hake, this was a failure. The heavy crust on the fish rendered it almost inedible and was worse than your average beach shack fish. The fish was both overcooked and questionably seasoned, it tasted almost bitter. It was served on a semi bland barley risotto with meager traces of kale. She liked the small pieces of kale the best out of any part of that dish. I had questioned my dates motivations for the hake in the first place and we looked on jealously as the table next to us had what looked to be a delicious piece of striped bass. For dessert we got the chocolate silk tart, with pretzel crust and candied hazelnuts. This was great, beautifully plated and the perfect level of sweetness. However, the coffee that we were served was full of grounds, we were offered a replacement but were in a bit of a hurry, so we declined (also why we didn't send back the hake). Service was ok, with nary a smile, but at least they didn't rush us out of there, probably because we had an 8:45 PM reservation. My date actually liked the level of service "as they stayed out of the way". The ambiance was amazing, we had a corner table in the sunken back room, surrounded by plants and a nice table setting. All in all, pretty decent food, but with a few big stumbles. Will probably come back for the burgers and the scallop app (which everyone "in-the-know" seemed to be ordering). read more

We were visiting the area and came across Blackfish while browsing restaurants on Yelp. We made a reservation for a Saturday night and I am so glad that we did! The restaurant itself is lovely; has a nice inviting and intimate ambiance. The service was great too. My glass of water was never sitting empty. The waitress, hostess, and the individuals bussing tables were friendly and professional. Now let's get to business...the food was excellent. We started with a Scallop appetizer that was delicious. My husband opted for a lobster dish with gnocchi. It was also very good. I went with a special they were offering that evening: a seared tuna in a roasted corn beurre monte (sp?). It was AMAZING (I feel like the capitalization on that does not do the amazingness justice). I had to basically build a wall around my dish so my husband would stop eating it. In all seriousness, it was one of the most interesting and delicious seared tuna dishes I've had. I'm actually starting to salivate while writing this... 100% recommended to anyone who likes delicious food. read more

We had heard a negative review (on service and food) from a local from a year or two ago, but finally tried it ourselves and we couldn't have been more impressed. Service was casual yet superb (staff in jeans and t-shirts but super professional). Food was the best I've encountered on the cape. My sole was an ample portion, delicate and tasted in a light lemon cream sauce with well matched seasonal veggies. My wife had chicken, succulent and delicious. She couldn't finish her generous portion. Curry sweet potato soup was ok, not as flavorful as I'd hoped for but I didn't leave a drop. Reservation system is by voice mail, asking you for cell #for confirmation. I never received a Conf, called an hour before unsure if we would be seated, but we were all set. That system needs work, but could be early season (early June) jitters. read more

Truly amazing experiences at Black Fish!! The cutest, cozier and comfy restos on the Cape! In an old house the bar is roomy enough and removed from the dinning room which spans two nice sized spaces. Romantic feel and really wonderful food! The Bolognese is what they are famous for since it includes Tuna but you'd never know it! Ultimate in deliciousness!!! Sounds weird but seriously ... Ya gotta try it!!!!! Every dish we have ever had has been memorable The staff are like a tight knit family and run the space beautifully together. A real find in Truro. I was very displeased with their so-called "Lobster Bisque". Too watery, dark in color, tasted burnt with pieces of onion floating around. No lobster taste, no lobster, might as well call it French onion soup. I know what good lobster bisque should be, because I have sampled every chance I get, and quite frankly I have perfected the best bisque! read more

The food was really great, and certainly reasonably priced. Their beer selection was actually quite eclectic, which was another positive. They weren't able to seat us until 10 minutes past the time of our reservation, but maybe that wasn't their fault (then again, that's never happened to me...). read more

Restaurants in Truro are few, so after a loooooong exhausting day sunbathing at the beach (lol) we don't like to go too far. Seems like a lot of people feel the same way because the place was packed (and also there for the good food). This is a cute little place with cuisine and decor that is a mix of a couple restaurants I frequent in Greenwich, CT. A very "farm to table" feel, I quite enjoyed the meal I had. I wasn't starving so I just ordered a salad, but it was perfect! Locally grown tomatoes with burata, a nice vinaigrette type dressing... exactly what I wanted! My parents rave about the burgers and you can customize them with all sorts of toppings. The burgers come with homemade chips that are amazing! Hence, that's what they ordered this trip with me. (They'll probably become regulars as they stay up on the Cape through September. Drinks were great, they have a wonderful wine list that is quite extensive and the mixed drinks were nicely done and generous. Service isn't speedy by any means--but hey, we're all supposed to be relaxed and in vacation mode, so we were okay with that and were able to enjoy our evening. I love seeing restaurants support the local businesses and farmers, so kudos to them! I'll definitely be back. read more

Food was excellent. Everything was fresh as fresh can be. Bread freshly cooked and served with a simple hummus and oilve oil dip which is just simple enough to not be too overwhelming. The homemade pastas were great - sauces each had their own unique complexity of flavours. The tuna bolagnase had a wonderful hint of lemon and the tuna was extremely flavourful. Yum. I would have gladly given them a five but their dining area was uncomfortably hot and humid. They definitely need to invest in some air conditioners. read more

Our absolute favorite restaurant on the lower Cape. We live on the cape year-round and can vouch for the fact that it's hard to get delicious, reasonably priced food here. I recommend making a reservation, sometimes days in advance, you but can also occasionally grab a bar seat here. Blackfish is definitely not cheap, but nothing I've found around here is, and all of the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. You will not get bad seafood here, for example. There are also many lower-priced options on the menu like the burger and the mussels. First off, Blackfish gives you the most wonderful hummus and olive oil dip with fresh bread stuffed with garlic. It's amazing and free. For appetizers we love love the frisée salad with deep fried poached duck egg. Seriously I'd never had an egg prepared like this before and it's amazing, you can also get it on the burger. It's always perfectly fried and runny inside, our waiter told me they end up tossing many eggs per night in an effort to get it perfect. We also love the scallops over cheddar fondue, pork belly, and really enjoy trying the daily specials. Our favorite entrees are always the nauset mussels with sausage in a cream sauce (this is so filling I often get it as my meal, the burger with endless topping options and homemade chips, they often have a pork chop or sometimes pork ribs with THE most amazing and smoky cheddar grits, and of course the epic and famous tuna bolognese (my boyfriend hates fish and still likes this dish). Also enjoy the lobster gnocchi. Tonight I tried a new dish, the spring pasta with bucatini, and it was also amazing. The flavors of mushrooms, lemon and Thai basil and the crunchy peas were perfect together. We rarely have room for dessert but when we do its divine! This place deserves 5 stars but only gets 4 because trying to make reservations is a nightmare! Get a phone with multiple lines and voicemail. Otherwise.... Bone in rib eye with house chips and creamed spinach is amazing as was the Pablo crusted sole. The owner is exec chef at Local 186 in Ptown (another great Place). We'll be back! read more
