I have eaten at the Blackfish several times and have always thought that it was an excellent restaurant. I went back there a few days ago. Again, the staff was quite nice and professional. While the salad I had was great the main course, haddock, was totally overcooked. I was surprised, given my previous experiences there, and disappointed. The Blackfish is not cheap, and I expected better. I will likely go back since this may be a one time occurance. read more

you little hidden gem you. take it from a local this place is a nice, relatively cheap, gloriously good place to eat. the food is scrumptious, the decor amazingly calm, but exciting at the same time. it has a bar at the front which is often empty but you can have your burger and drink there is you like. it has a large, expansive menu. Boyfriend got fish, i got steak... both were delightful and cooked to perfection. we got a ton of apps but i dont know what they were (cant remember, sorry) but everything hit the mark. local, often organic, and well made food all around. its definitely one of the calmer, romantic establishments on cape cod. but this is a thrilling change to the uptight places that are ALL over the place. Its relaxing. you take your time eating. the service is very attentive but gives you space to eat, and enjoy your company. make sure you take the addy and set your GPS, this one is hidden. read more

This is an outstanding restaurant! Had panko sole and clams, mussels, squid, and haddock in tomato broth. Both were perfect. Fried oysters were delightful not overcooked. I will say this freely-- the food at Blackfish is very good. If you are lucky enough to get good service, then you might give them four stars. However, because of the way we were treated, I cannot. Our party of three had reservations for 8:15. The hostess walked us backed to a table, and walked away. Directly pointed at our table was a halogen light that was shining righty in our faces. It was the only table in there that seemed to have this pesky spotlight. When the waitress came around, I immediately asked her if something could be done about the light. A few minutes later, she came back and told us that another waitress had "burned herself" moving the bulb's direction the other night, and could I please move to another chair at the table to avoid the direct beam. I did not like the answer-- but I moved. Now it was still shining in my sister's face. No one else at the table wanted to say anything, so we just suffered in silence. Shame on Blackfish for making it our problem (as if we wanted someone to burn themselves!). It was clear that we were unhappy. The manager should have been alerted and something should have (and could have) been done. After asking for such a small accommodation the waitress was snotty as hell. We still tipped her 20%-- because we have manners-- but this establishment simply does not care about its customers. If you are lucky enough to get one of the normal tables with the warm low lighting, stay. If not, run out before you waste you money. My family and I went to Blackfish on the 4th of july this year. What a fantastic dining experience we had! We sampled a bunch of different dishes from appetizers, entrees, to deserts and they were all very tasty. The staff was very friendly and the ambience was exquisite. We had the best dinner at the Blackfish last night!! I had the rabbit ragu and my boyfriend had the ribeye steak. Both so good we talked about the food and the delicious cocktails all night. The service is impeccable, friendly and knowledgeable, and when we asked questions she gave us great direction. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Blackfish. THe food at Blackfish is pretty consistently good, with the multi-mentioned tuna bolognese and the oysters being a constant hit. THe only issue is it is difficult to get a reservation in season and it is very costly. Depending where you sit in the restaurant( the back room preferable and not all the tables) it isn't always a relaxing experience. But considering the many surrounding restaurants which are also costly and not as good, it's worth going. read more

3 out of 3 happy customers tonight--awesome tuna bolognese over fresh pappardelle with mascarpone and lemon confit...sauteed wild mushrooms over fresh tagliatelle was so flavorful...pan roasted haddock with toasted wheat berries, haricot vert, leeks, and a sofrito vinaigrette was just phenomenal--Cape Cod Red and Cabernet Franc from Truro vineyards added to the mix of flavors. We have been eating at Backfish for 4 years straight and we are never disappointed. The service is excellent! The restaurant is both relaxing and lovely combining chic with mellow. I had dinner tonight with two friends, and we loved it. Two of us had the butter-poached lobster, with morels, fava beans, and gnocchi, in a creamy sauce -- delicious! (the only reason this doesn't get five stars is I had to ask for bread to mop up the sauce, but when I got it, the bread itself was also yummy). (a review below that gives only 2 stars says the menu does not mention the gnocchi -- unless they've changed the menu in the past 6 weeks, it does include the gnocchi in its description) The other friend had the halibut special, which also looked marvelous. We didn't think to share bites, so I take her word -- but she summers up here a lot and loves this place. Because we had to be somewhere, we couldn't stay for dessert, but if I'm ever on the Cape again, I am definitely coming here again, and will make sure I make time for dessert. read more

We go to Blackfish several times every summer and have always found it to be a transcendent experience. This year was different. I must say that I was a little startled that a restaurant of this caliber has decided that you have to pay if you want bread on your table. For me, the experience starts when you walk into the restaurant; the ambience is absolutely beautiful, the waitstaff are efficient, nice, helpful, then they seat you, ask if you want tap or bottled water and for the next 5-10 minutes you're there with a glass of water on your table and nothing else. You're hungry, you want attention. It stops the experience in its tracks.. Breaking bread is not just eating food, but part of the ritual. It says, "We want to feed you, we want you to feel at home." It put the whole night on a bad footing. The food was good, but the mashed cauliflower lacked flavor and was watery. the drinks are generous and my scallop appetizer did not disappoint. It was not the great dining experience I expected. We'll try again next year. read more

Last year (2014) this was our favorite place on Cape Cod. But this year we were very disappointed both at the quality of the food and the noise level both times we visited. Loved their braised short ribs last year - this year the sauce was overpowering and cloying. The mussels appetizer is unique and delicious. Tried a special on the 2nd visit this year which was pig cheeks, which the waiter sold us on. Same overpowering sauce as the short ribs. Deserts were ordinary. Atmosphere was extremely noisy. Instead of white tablecloths, the tables use brown paper - not too elegant. Not going back. read more

This is a tough review to write. We eat at this restaurant every summer and are always impressed on how good the food is and this evening it was no exception. The fried oyster and scallop apps were quite impressive and the salad was a delicious complement to our meal start. BUT the waitress was really lousy and put a big damper on an otherwise delightful and innovative high quality meal. First, our table was situated in a bad spot and I was always getting bumped by the wait staff so after telling the waitress of the situation she said she will check with the hostess about reseating us. Nothing ever happened. Next, she did not know anything about the beer list and had to check her notes. Then one of our party ordered the burger and asked for a salad or Vegetable instead of the chips and there was no effort made at all by the waitress to accommodate the request. We of course would have paid for any up charge. Then when the hamburger arrived she asked what condiments were needed and then she forgot to bring them and had to be reminded and then the burger was cold and had to be reheated. She asked us if we wanted a second round of drinks when the meal was completed and the dishes removed; odd ask! Then for the grand finale when the check came she over charged us by almost 75% by charging us for twice the number of entrees ordered by our party. One quick look at the check by the waitress would have prevented her from bringing us the wrong check. All we received was a half baked apology. But for the service we would have rated the meal 4 stars. read more

We always try to pick a new place to us each time we come to the cape, last year it was ocean house in Dennis which was just killer from all aspects, already have a reservation in place one year out! We were so excited and expecting so much from black fish which has been at the top of the ratings. We made reservations for Memorial Day night figuring the crowds would be less. We were seated right away but even from the start faced some ageism, we are both just under 30 but love quality food which is why we choose to do here. We ordered drinks and said we were fine with tap water but wanted a lemon which took 15 minutes to arrive, the drinks made it first. One drink was a strawberry basil martini which was good not great, a sprig of fresh basil would have made a huge impact both presentation and flavor. The special soup was a wild mushroom dish that sounded great but missed the mark, adding truffle oil to not great soup is still not great soup. However, the scallop with parmesan fondue appetizer was absolutely amazing (should have ordered just 6 of those). We are both celiac. My wife ordered the poached lobster & fava bean dish and I ordered the clams/fish in spicy tomato sauce (aka cioppino or Bouillabaisse). The lobster came with potato gnocchi which we could not eat it not mentioned in the description or by the waiter, just unacceptable for a $40 plate. The spicy fish soup was just okay not great, the broth was bland which after the scallops dish and other reviews was shocking to find. Overall, the meal was mediocre and not worthy of the hype which was so unfortunate. Would not go back for an upscale/fine dining option, way too many others that are great on the cape to try and go back again too like The Mews in PTown or captain linnell house in Orleans. read more

The Blackfish is definitely not for everyone. The food is fantastic, but the flavors are strong - if you're used to ho-hum, dull American food, you're in for a surprise. We had the lobster bisque, my friend loved it. The roasted endive and pear salad with sweet gorgonzola dressing was yummy, a party in the mouth. We ordered the seared foie gras on toasted brioche with strawberry rhubarb compotes but it was way too rich for me. My dinner companion liked it, he's far braver than I am. I ordered the pan roasted haddock (had salsa verde on it) with a whipped root vegetable and yummy totally fresh and local green beans. Terrific. My friend had the braised organic veal with wild mushroom jus and potato puree and it was the most tender thing you could imagine. He commented that you can tell the chef takes much pride in his menu and really loves what he does. The desserts were delish - the panna cotta with blueberries over a lemon compote was PHENOMENAL - it can't be described, it must be experienced. It's an expensive night out but well worth it - try it at least once. I liked the pace of the evening meal - and the service was great. Our waitress was helpful and available. Everyone around us looked as though they were enjoying themselves as well. Good atmosphere. Love that's it's local and organic and homey. Make sure you get reservations if going on the weekend. read more

Did not have a good experience. When we arrived with our friends, they couldn't find our reservation, made by phone a week before. After several embarrassing minutes they decided to seat us anyway. After our order was taken we got our salads but had to wait an extremely long time for our entrees. That might have been OK but the couple at the table next to us who arrived after we did were served and finished before we got our meals. The house salad ($6) was a few pieces of bibb lettuce and two tiny grape tomatoes cut in half. No pepper was on the table and the server didn't offer any for the salads. The entrees were fine except for mine. Unfortunately I ordered the pork shoulder which came as a lump of grey meat with absolutely no flavor or flavorings. We ordered coffee and dessert. We were finished with our deserts before the coffee was served and no refills were offered. Then, when I didn't give a 20% tip (10% instead for the various delays) the hostess questioned me, embarrassing me in front of my guests. I explained that service begins when you walk in the door, not just when the server brings food. I doubt that we shall return. read more

I have eaten in blackfish many times over the years. I called and wanted to make a reservation and the phone just rang and rang so I left a voicemail. I called up again and finally someone answered and I made a reservation for 5 o'clock. At 3 o'clock the day we were going to eat there someone called me to confirm the reservation. When we arrived the place was empty. The hostess proceeded to set us in a dark corner under in the air conditioner. We usually sit in a nice bright well lit area that has glass overlooking the fauna that grows on the outside. I guess if we could if we could sit there and she seemed bothered. Once we looked over the menu it wasn't the same menu that they have posted online. There was nothing there that either one of us liked. So we got up and left and went someplace else and had a delightful dinner. I don't think I'll be going back to blackfish when there so many great restaurants on The lower cape read more
