The food and service is very good. It's a little expensive but it is worth it. I have been several times.

We've been coming to Blackfish for over a decade and it remains our favorite restaurant in the outer cape. We usually go when we are headed to Payomet, which is a few times a year. And when we are on vacation. We've never been disappointed. The food is fresh and consistently good. We can usually get a spot at the bar or the bar area, and they are always friendly. read more

This was the the one real FOODIE restaurant visit during our week in Wellfleet. The service was on par with the high quality and sophistication of the food. This is one of those menu's where you have to decide between numerous dishes you would like to try - that's a good thing. The only thing I noticed which kind of bothered me was the one bus-person who was wearing a huge Nike logo across her shirt. The whole environment, setting etc was so excellent and then you have an employee kind of breaking the atmosphere in a way that could have easily been controlled. Maybe I'm being pick but when everything is set so perfectly then you have this one odd thing out of place it was unfortunate. Didn't bother us enjoying a great meal and a great night of course. This place has a beautiful ambience. The entire restaurant is in a renovated cape cod styled house so there are multiple dining rooms. My favorite one is the one by the garden with large windows on two sides of the room. The room is placed lower than ground level so you feel you immersed into the garden. The lighting in the room and the garden are perfect to make you feel like the garden is an extension of the room. If you make a reservation ahead of time (which you should as it gets crowded even during off-season) make sure to request for that room. The food is pretty good. I prefer getting their meat dishes over seafood because I think that they cook the seafood dishes somewhat bland. Last time I went with my boyfriend, we shared the bone marrow, scallops, tomato and veggie pasta, and the cajun seafood stew. While the bone marrow was delicious with arugula and bread to soak up the oil, we made the mistake of ordering sea food heavy dishes. They were good but nothing spectacular while their meat dishes I have tried in the past, such as their burgers and duck, has been excellent. Their cocktails are so tasty. My all time favorite is the cucumber martini. It is not sweat but is a bit watery from the liquid in the cucumber. I have tried their strawberry martini as well. It also tasted delicious with the flavor of fresh strawberries. However it was a bit too sweat for me, I wouldn't order it again. If you don't want to dine there, they also have a room for their bar so you can just got for a drink. read more

This place should have 5 stars. Exceptional quality, creative menu, and great service. My wife had the tuna bolognese which was a masterful twist on a time honored dish. The tuna mixed so perfectly with the sauce. I had the clam and pork belly appetizer and the frise salad with the park fried duck egg (which was technically a poached egg that was fried in panko afterwards, also called a volcano egg). It was all so good and the service was quick and attentive. They sat us between bookings, as we didn't have a reservation. So I appreciate the flexibility of the host and the great service meant we never felt rushed. It definitely didn't feel like a tourist trap, as some of the other restaurants here on the cape felt. I had been to Blackfish several times before, but had always had a reservation. Last night, after trying out servers places in Wellfleet, my group and I decided to duck into Blackfish one a whim. It was worth it. Although the dining room was completely booked up, there was limited bar seating available. Unlike in some restaurants, the bar patrons aren't treated like second-class citizens. Our waitress was warm and accommodating, and catered to everything perfectly. One friend had the halibut, which was incredible, and paired perfectly with the grüner vetliner. I had the chicken, which came with the local Eastham turnips. I've found that one of the trademarks of a good restaurant is it's ability to prepare chicken well-- Blackfish passed the test. 10/10 experience. read more

Wow...amazing night. Very old historic building nestled in tiny charming Truro. Tight Parking for sure on a chilly fall night. Warm and welcoming staff, lovely and some funky fun art. Comfy seats and a very diverse creative menu. I had the tuna bolognese, my DSM had the veal, my bff had haddock and her hubby had the rib eye. Oh, we had two orders of golden beet salad with red beet carpaccio. First off, my massive Herradura Margarita was perfection. My DSM loved his dirty Kettle One Martini. Friend's hubby had a Hendrick's Gin and Tonic and BFF loved her Strawberry Martini. The food was great...friend's hubby did not LOVE LOVE his rib eye (tough) but the homemade potato chips (oh so garlicky) made up for it. We had wine, well selected from the waitress...I cannot recall the name of my Chenin Blanc (should write these details down) but it was perfect. I love this spot..indeed it's worth the ride and certainly one of Cape Cod's top dining spots. read more

The 4.5 stars is very accurate. Very, very lovely place. Ambience is superb. Great lighting and even better scenery. You feel like you are surrounded by a forest in the back eating area--it is awesome. Drinks: got the Malbec and it was good. Also got the strawberry martini and it was very good--highly recommend. Oysters: delicious! The sauce provided is really good. Ceviche: also delicious! Presented in a seashell which was a nice aesthetic touch. Scallops: once again, delicious! The sauce they are presented with is really superb. Seafood bouillabaisse: Only had a few bites, but very good. Not too fishy and not too rich. Fried chicken: one of the only things that was only O.K. Burger: fantastic! One of the better burgers I have had in awhile. I got it with truffle cheese, aioli, and caramelized onion. Chocolate tart: good, not amazing. Has a "salted pretzel" crust, but it isn't that salty. Not quite worth the calories. Awesome place to go to for dinner. It was a former blacksmith shop & there are pieces inside the restaurant that reflect its former history. They have a bar, a restaurant & the ambience is dark. I have been here twice. This time we all went & had a MEAL I WILL REMEMBER FOR A LONG TIME. No Free Bread here. The Fresh Bread with white bean purée with olive oil is Fantastic & Addictive that they charge you for. This is our favorite restaurant on the Cape and we have one dinner there before we leave. The service and food is superb. Wished I had my camera as everything was presented beautifully . Hummus over olive oil is served along with a basket of fresh bread . We had pan sautéed sole with a light lemon cream sauce with puree of cauliflower that was excellent. The tuna bologonese with pasta was also excellent. We also had a Thai curry fish soup we enjoyed Dessert was a Chocolate tart on a pretzel crust to die for Everytime a utensil was used, a clean utensil was replaced by a server. Yes they are very attentive to their diners. Prices on the high side in my opinion but the food so tasty and local fresh produce is used, is worth the dining experience in my opinion. read more

I went here with a friend after hearing so many great things about this place. We ended up dining there on a Thursday night and made sure to have a reservation, as it can get quite busy. We showed up on time and we're seated right away. We were pretty hungry, so we just decided to split a bunch of items: Scallop appetizer (4.5 stars): This dish was the perfect start to our meal as the scallops were cooked perfectly. Salad with chives and fried shallots (3 stars): I thought that this salad was fine, but nothing really jumped out at me flavorwise. Panko crusted sole (4 stars): The sole was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. The cauliflower mash it was served with and asparagus were also very good and made it a pretty healthy entree. Tuna bolognese (3.5 stars): This is definitely an interesting dish to say the least. There are many flavors that hit the palette when tasting this pasta, but I felt like it was a lot of hype for a dish that just makes tuna taste like beef. Is it worth trying for yourself? Absolutely. Just don't expect to be blown away. Blueberry mint panna cotta (3.5 stars): This was a good ending to the meal as it was fresh and light. I would have loved a little more mint flavor and whipped cream, but otherwise this was also enjoyable. Strawberry basil martini (4 stars): This drink sounded great and tasted great. A tad on the sweet side, so one was enough for me--but very tasty. Overall, this is a nice spot out in Truro that is worth a visit if you're around the area. Having been to Truro and Provincetown a few times this summer I can say that, hands down, Blackfish was the restaurant that most under-promises and over-delivers. The rabbit and foie gras are the standouts, but the skirt steak is worth mentioning as are the mussels. As other reviewers have mentioned, the service could be slightly better. They are particularly militant about scheduling reservations on the quarter hour, and it's rare for the time you're looking for to be actually available, even in the off-season. It's also not uncommon for the host or hostess to be absent when you arrive at the restaurant, so be prepared for a short wait there. That being said, the waitstaff are both friendly and knowledgeable, if a bit overworked. I also really like the decor, which is all blacksmith themed, starting with the iron wrought door, and namesake "Blackfish" and continuing inside with bellows, yokes, and other tools of the trade. read more

Had an unusual disappointing experience at Blackfish recently. The fried oyster appetizer and salad were delicious, as was the sourdough roll and bean puree in olive oil. The panna cotta was great. An absolute gem of a restaurant in all aspects, atmosphere, service and most importantly the food were all excellent. We wanted to find a place away from the frenzy of Provincetown in the height of summer and found Blackfish through trusty old Yelp. It's unpretentious and a very inviting and friendly place but definitely more of an adult dining experience (although we did see a few kids in there). The staff was all very friendly and accommodating and the inside rather dark but in a nice intimate way rather than depressing. The clientele all looked genuinely happy to be there which is no mean feat for a Tuesday night. The highlight was the food. We had a roasted carrot with chimmichurri appetizer that was unique and likely the most delicious carrot dish I have ever had. For mains we had the short rib and a vegetable pasta with fresh peas, asparagus and peppers. Both were unique, fresh and utterly delicious with just the right portion size to feel completely satisfied without being stuffed. We very rarely eat dessert but made an exception for the marscapone sponge cake with strawberries and it was rich without being overly sweet, quite devine. While it's not a budget priced option I surely have paid more for inferior food and experience and feel that in some respects it's actually quite good value for money when everything is factored in. Initially I was put off Blackfish by having to put down a credit card in order to book a table. This was quickly dispelled on arrival to a really beautiful setting in a quiet grove. The parking lot was full and when we walked in the restaurant was busy but civilized. I could still conduct a conversation at a quiet level and be heard. The service on arrival was really friendly and continued throughout the meal. Although the restaurant was busy, the service was efficient and unobtrusive. The food...amazing. We all ordered different items, 2 fish mains and one burger. Each meal was creative and cooked beautifully. A lot of thought has obviously gone into the matching of ingredients. The flavors were combined perfectly. But to me a restaurant meal is about more than just the meal, it is the entire experience. The room and setting at Blackfish is beautiful and it definitely adds another important element to a wonderful experience. I will definitely put this restaurant on my return list. read more

One of the best meals I have had in recent memory! Our whole group was delighted. We started out with the fresh bread with olive oil and white bean dip, which I think is a must. Two in our party enjoyed burgers grilled to perfection with house-made potato chips...plenty to share with others in the party who were staring longingly at their plates. The roasted chicken also earned raves from our group. I had the sole, which was just a perfect dish. Dinners were complemented by the local Truro rose wine, which was smooth and lovely, and should not be missed if you are a visitor to the area. Service was above and beyond excellent. This is one of the most consistent restaurants on the Cape that delivers night after night. The problem is trying to get a reservation but if you can score, it is so worth it. The food and the cocktails are outstanding! Appetizers. The Nauset mussels are the reason we drive here every year. They arrive in a massive bowl ( enough for two) floating in a fennel and cream sauce with Italian sausage and focaccia for dipping which is lights out. The fresh baked bread accompanied by a white bean purée and evoo is a great way to start with either a Negroni or a special watermelon and basil martini which Curtis is incredible at making and serving up. The restaurant is noted for several entrees including the Tuna Bolognese served on fresh pappardelle with mascarpone cheese and lemon confit. My favorite dish this night was the braised short ribs of beef served w/ whipped potatoes, carrots and cippolini onions in a beef gravy that you could have used a spoon,it was so tender. Aside from several seafood and vegan dishes, the Black Fish serves up one of the best Niman Ranch burgers you could ever order. The one item I missed having this year was the frisée salad which is like no other. It typically arrives with a pano-encrusted fried duck egg, nueske's bacon and mustard vinaigrette. That same egg is optional on their burger as well. For some reason I gathered that duck eggs may have been hard to purchase and therefore the salad was not available. I do hope it gets back on the menu soon. For a great dining and food experience, make your way to the Black Fish in Truro. You won't regret it. read more

We couldn't get a reservation but were encouraged to come sit at the bar for full menu which was fine for 2 people. We sat right away on the couch in the bar, but it all felt very rushed. They forgot the appetizer I ordered, the salads came in about 3 minutes after ordering and the entrees came before I had finished my first glass of wine. I enjoyed the halibut, a special, but my husband's chicken was dry. We were finishing up and decided to skip dessert and they asked if another couple could join us on the couch as we were paying. We really didn't mind but would have enjoyed the experience more if it had been more leisurely. My pet peeve is that they forgot the app when they didn't write down the order. Write it down and get it right. Maybe we'll go back if we're able to make a reservation in advance and perhaps enjoy appetizers with another couple, but not anytime soon. read more

Came to Blackfish in Late July for an early dinner before a show at the WHAT. The drinks were great and the food and service were solid. The reason for the 3 stars was really because of the atmosphere. Perhaps it was the area we were sitting but since part of the dining area is subterranean it felt dark and damp. There were also several mosquitos buzzing around that made it difficult to concentrate on dinner. Again food and service were fine just felt the dining area could use a little sprucing up. read more

We had a 5 star meal with some discomfort. The ladder-back chairs match the decor, but are not good for sitting. Cannot get the small of your back against the seat back unless you lean or hunch forward, because your shoulders hit the back first. I sat most of the meal on the hard front edge of the chair, so I could get my feet under me a little and take the strain off my back. If you are young or tolerant, maybe you won't mind. We also found the service slightly less attentive than we wished; probably the B team on a Sunday night. We started by sharing the mussels, bread, and a salad. Last night this popular eatery was packed to the gills! The service was excellent in spite of the surge in business. Our waiter was prompt and thorough. The dinner choices were diverse and perfectly presented and prepared. From burgers to tonnato The best grilled octopus I have ever had. First, just trust your gps to get you here - otherwise, you'll miss it. Our waitress was spot on with recommendations, not the least of which, included the fried oyster appetizer. I'm not a huge oyster fan and I don't each much fried food - I don't care who you are, you should order this! After my wife stole two and our friend another, we ordered a second round of these little morsels from an underwater heaven. The highlight of the entrees was probably the wild mushroom dish, the complex layers of flavor were unreal. We had a party of 4 and all the food was impeccable, my compliments to the kitchen. Blackfish now ranks in my top 3 restaurants for the Cape: tied with Fin and ahead of Macs. The price was fair for what you get, I believe it ended up being about $60-70pp with drinks. read more

We had been meaning to try Blackfish for several years as we had heard that the food was very good. Last night was the night. It was ok - not bad, but not particularly good either. The onion tart appetizer was good, although both the duck prosciutto and the cheese that came with it were extremely salty. My husband's tuna bolognese was also good, although the bolognese overwhelmed the tuna a bit. I had the steak salad special - a pretty basic dish reasonably well prepared. The steak was nicely cooked and the arugula nicely dressed, but the tomatoes were cold and not particularly flavorful - as if they had just come out of the fridge. My glass of red wine was served too warm and did not justify it's $15/glass price tag. We were in the slightly subterranean room in back. It was extremely noisy and dark. Someone kept fiddling with the lights and our table would get randomly slightly brighter or slightly darker over the course of the meal. As the evening wore on the room emptied out and became quieter - but emptier room made the unpleasant musty basement odor noticeable. Perhaps other entrees in other sections of the restaurant yield the experience people are raving about in the other reviews. read more

Now, this is MY kind of restaurant! I love that at the top of the menu it says "eat local" That's a good place to start in my book! Of course they can't be sourcing everything from the Cape, but their hearts are in the right place, and that makes me very happy. I went with Anthony and two friends, and after looking the menu over we decided to do a sort of self-serve tasting with an assortment of starters and a couple of salads. That was a great idea, it turns out. We noticed that a few of the starters re-appeared on the entree menu (in larger portions, I can only assume) so we chose things that appealed to us, and ended up with a fairly good assortment. There is no question that the chef's palate determines this menu. He clearly likes strong flavors. The mussels are SMOKEY and the tuna on the nicoise (Bigeye, hopeful line caught) is OILY. No problem, he is talented, and pretty creative, and for the most part steering away from heavy fats and towards lighter flavors. We loved the beet carpaccio, the oddly shallot-free mignonette with the oysters, the deconstructed lamb with lavash and the wild mushrooms on homemade pasta. My friend and I thought the rabbit ragu (also on their excellent housemade pasta) was the crowning jewel, and we also appreciated the house-baked bread. One thing I found a little bit odd was that they had very few local, or even domestic beers, on the beer list, but it says "drink local" below it. I would suggest that they lay in a few of the excellent beers that are being brewed right here, on Cape Cod! We weren't crazy about the crowded, loud dining room, but the brightly lit greenery that grew all around the huge windows was stunning. Definitely worth the trip! read more

Blackfish is the type of restaurant that really elicits a love/hate review, which to me is the most difficult one to write. As you walk back to your car after the meal, you chat with the other people in your group and say, it was good....but there was something just OK... Our experiences: A staff that feels like it belongs in the local Chili's not in a finer dining establishment. If I was at Chili's, they would have been fine. So, I admit this upfront--my issues are on the picky side. I have a rule, when the meal breaks $100, I have the right to very good service. Below that, as long as its OK, that's fine. Dinner for 2 with wine and tip was $155....so here goes: *I watched the host walk 4 women behind us over to their tables, drop the menus, and just walk away. That was amateur and rude. *Our waiter had no finesse. He banged the wine around, dropped our entrée plates on the table with a thud. It wasn't that he was outright rude, it was just that he came to the table, we were uncomfortable and HE took away from the dinner. *We asked to be moved because as a 2 top, we were placed along a wall with 8 to one side, and 6 to the other. We couldn't hear each other, and felt like we were squished into other people's celebrations. The manager told us that our food was just about to come out, and if we wanted to move to the table for 2 that had just left by itself across the room, our food would be ruined. Not a I'm sorry there's a problem, how can I help you, just a bad attitude of "you're a problem customer, just eat your food." Now for the food: Apps and entrees were good! A pretty good wine list with a few interesting choices. We had the sticky toffee pudding dessert--not so good. In my opinion, there's really no AMAZING food in the Ptown area, so Blackfish is pretty good. They were VERY busy, with people waiting to sit until about 9:15 ish, so no matter what my picky opinion is they're making money. So in summation, its not a bad place, but lower your expectations from what you THINK you're going to get, and you'll be fine. read more
