It's quintessential "LA" and I'm sure the Melrose location is even cooler due to it being the original. I love the jazz music and posters. I love the infused water they give! I like how they have a very expansive menu to please everyone. I wanted to try one of the healthier options so I got the tofu tostada. I was between the tostada and hash, but my water perfectly described both and recommended the tostada if I like something crispy. They mash they tofu and dry it out so well that it almost has a Parmesan crust consistency! I love how tiny they dice their potatoes too. This spot came recommended by a Los Ángeles native, so of course, I drove to the Blu Jam Cafe. I loved the indoor/ outdoor set up at this location. We took a seat outside on a completely perfect day. The outdoor seating area has fans so just in case it's a little warm, you have something to cool you down. I ordered the salmon hash-half because I found it intriguing, and half because I was REALLY hungry. It came with a side of toast and an egg on top with jam on the side. To say I enjoyed this meal would be an understatement. I found it a refreshing way to integrate salmon into breakfast. Paired alongside the potatoes, it was incredibly tasty. Sometimes salmon is too oily for me. But the potatoes and the egg yolk really offset that oil for me. Definitely a good experience. Well, when we arrived there's a 2 parties ahead of us. And as we waited, about 4 more parties arrived behind us. What I didn't understand is if you have a section that's suppose to be utilized for outdoor dining, why not utilize it. They had a part of the parking lot blocked off with outdoor tables but totally not used. Only the restaurant outdoor part was being used. When there's a line of people wanting to get in,would you just not have them seated when there's a whole section that was available. Don't know if they were short staff or what. But just assumed that since it was last day for dining, you would want to accosts many as you can before lockdown. Of course with the lockdown, dining capacity was to a limit. Hence the the blocked area. Anywho... Rant over... Waited for a while till we got seated. Once seated, they instructed us that we would scan and order everything on our phone. Which wasn't bad, you pick what you like and how you want to pay. All together or separate bill. From there, the food is brought to your table. Water is brought out in plastic containers for you. Love the patio rendition. Although I appreciate every parking space along Ventura boulevard, I appreciate ample seating more and Blu Jam has it to the nines. The outside seating alleviates the reverberation of clanking silverware, porcelain/ceramic, a glass bussed in haste. Turnover efficiency. Understood. This was absolutely, without a doubt the WORST dining experience I have ever had. I used to love Blu Jam cafe, the food is terrific. But they have a new system where there is NO service. They have you order from your phone and pay like a robot. What if two people are on a date? That's incredibly awkward!!!!!! Not to mention, the reason you GO to a restaurant is to be SERVED. This was dehumanizing and absolutely atrocious. To treat customers like robots, MacDonalds has better service, at least a human takes your order! Maybe they think they're being 'cool' and modern but there is nothing cool about it. It's awful and it's a disgrace. The food is still good, but it's not worth being treated that way when you go out for a dining experience. Shame on whoever runs this place. I have to say that I'm wary of these kinds of places with outrageous wait times to get served and knowing how people love trendy junk in Sherman Oaks. I ordered a bacon and cheese omelet with specific instructions to include NO potatoes or toast. They got the toast part right, but the thing arrived actually sitting on a mound of tiny potatoes, which I had to remove from the bottom of the omelet. Most annoying. Then there was the omelet. I don't think I've ever had an omelet wherein the cheese is only on the top. Normally, cheese and bacon are on the inside and melted. This was more like an inflated pancake than an omelet. It was okay, but nothing more and certainly not as good as Hugo's or any place like that. And yet, people wait for forty-five minutes because? I may give it another shot and try something else, but this was, sadly, for me, a disappointment. read more

What happened to Blu Jam? This used to be my favorite breakfast place and now it's just one disappointment after another. The entire ordering system is unnecessarily complicated and I put in an order for our entire table (online) and it did go through on my card but Blu Jam had no notice of my ticket/order at all so we had to go to the counter and order and pay everything again. I was told this happened quite a lot as their online ordering system had an error. The food was alright but we found hair in one of our omelettes and the coffee used to be stronger and a lot better. With all of that and their prices still being very high, we at least hoped for good service but that's also not the case. All in all I cannot recommend Blu Jam anymore and it's just very sad. The service was really great, always refilling water when we need it. I ordered the carbonara and then the crunchy French toast. The carbonara was really good. Instead of noodles they use rice to make the dish. The bottom was crispy burnt rice which gave it that smoky taste. The crunchy French toast was alright. It wasn't as fluffy as I expected it to be. We went this morning right when it opened at 9am and we still had to wait like 15 minutes. They do contactless ordering in the restaurant, so you can just open a menu on your phone and order there. One of my favorite places to go for breakfast or brunch. It gets very busy on the weekends but the weekdays are good. They have valet parking for $2 which is awesome. No need to worry where to park. The customer service is ok too, as long as it's not too busy. When they get too busy they seem to forget that you are at the table and trying to order food or even might need an extra plate or napkins. Or your coffee is cold. The food is always good. They have a variety of gluten free dishes. Their sandwiches and omelettes are delicious. I was there last week and I finally got to try the French Toast and it was perfect. The right amount of crunchiness and sweetness. Will definitely order it again. Overall this place is amazing and you should give it a try.
