This one of a very limited handful of restaurants on Lanai. On Sunday, some of the others are not even open which further limits the dining options. After visiting the Cat Sanctuary I had some time to see Lanai City before the flight back to Oahu. The shuttle driver recommended Blue Ginger and at first I walked past because it seemed very crowded and the menu was almost too much to read. But there really was nowhere else to go, and the line had actually dissipated in the time we spent walking around. The servers were friendly, and the food was better than I expected. There was also a large selection of pastries on display. My club sandwich had really flavorful fresh ingredients, including some very mild sweet onion slices. The bread was very soft and fresh. I was slightly disappointed when I went to fill my coffee mug and saw that the coffee maker was down and all that was available was instant coffee.. but it seemed to be pretty decent quality after all. You can't go to Lana'i without eating at Blue Ginger at least once! I had breakfast there during my recent trip and it was great. I started with the Blueberry Turnover while I waited for the food to cook. It was flakey and sweet. It went well with my meal since my order was very savory. I had the Lana'i Omelet and Breakfast Burrito; both were delicious and filling. The star for me was their Fried Rice! Possibly the best Fried Rice I've had in a very long time. They were a bit busy with the line going out the door when I got there but service was still friendly and quick. The outdoor seating was perfect even if there was road work going on haha. read more

When you visit Lanai, you don't have a lot of choices when it comes to dining. You either pay an arm and a leg for resort food, or you can eat at one of the hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Lanai City. Me personally, I don't dig resort food all that much, and I also like to support the local eateries whenever possible, so whenever I visit Lanai, I prefer to eat my meals in Lanai City. Blue Ginger Cafe continues to amaze me at every visit. Their menu is quite extensive - they have something for everyone - saimin, burgers, sandwiches, plate lunches, and even fried ice cream. They also have fantastic pastries, including their turnovers, which are better than Napoleon's. This past weekend we were on Lanai for 2 days, and we ate at Blue Ginger twice. We first came for lunch on Saturday - I had the teri chicken, and my hubby had the honey fried chicken. I didn't care for the honey on my hubby's fried chicken, but the chicken itself was very crispy. I really liked my teri chicken! Our second visit was for dinner on Sunday night (it was the only restaurant open in Lanai City, other than Hotel Lanai). The hubby and I shared a plate of fried saimin and chicken katsu. Having breakfast this morning, taste is great, however, just a few things draw a questions: 1) Their food preparation is similar to an upscale restaurant, however, certain points are lacking: a) Omelet is prepared like an upscale rest. w/omelet ingredients floating free tucked between the egg folds & tasting fantastic, however, the hash browns are McDonald's style & NOT freshly made. In addition, the toast that comes w/the meal is an awesome tasting, very thick slice of bread that was freshly baked that morning! Doesn't make too much sense, they need to work on their full presentation & what they offer on each dish to match the prices they charge! 2) The service (counter-help staff not including the Owner himself) is absolutely the worse! They DO NOT smile or greet you with the "Welcoming Warmth" you would expect from a restaurant that wants to be known for their awesome tasting food! Not all the condiments are on the table (i.e.: ketchup) BUT they don't offer you any when they drop your food at your table with a very ungrateful & unpleasant facial look! On this trip I had the eggs with Portuguese sausage and there's nothing stingy about my sausage. Big slices that won't make you feel cheated. On another occasion, I ordered the chop steak and it had a ton of meat along with the great variety of zucchini, bell pepper, broccoli and carrots. I was full very quick. I'm finally writing a review. I enjoyed my time here in Lanai city especially with all the eateries. I went to Blue Ginger Cafe on Sunday. Almost all the restaurants are closed on Sundays so me and my girlfriend went here for breakfast and dinner. For breakfast I ate the corned beef over fired rice. Corned beef has is one of my favorite breakfast meals. It tasted and looked like Libby's corned beef hash which I loved when I was growing up as a kid. So i couldn't complain, the fried rice was also good. I saw a table next to our order the hamburger steak and a side order french fries. Those plates were humungous and wish places on Oahu would serve those kinds of portions. For dinner I ate their teriyaki chicken. This was broke the mouth and one of the best teri chicken I ever ate. The chicken was moist with the outside cooked perfectly and the teriyaki sauce is what made it. We also ordered their apple turnovers to go and snack on later. Cute little nook in "downtown" Lana'i City. We went to check it out to see what non-resort food was like on the island and because we'd received a good recommendation from someone who used to live on Lana'i . . . though in retrospect, I'm guessing we got that particular recommendation because Blue Ginger is pretty much one of the only gigs in town. There isn't anything WRONG with Blue Ginger Cafe, per se, but it somehow lacks the small town charm I'm accustomed to from small neighbor island places. The morning we went, the service wasn't all that friendly, the outdoor-seating customers were smoking (not the business' fault, I guess, but they had to smell it and could have stopped it, being that there's a state law against smoking in dining areas), and the food -- well, the food as OK at best. My Denver omelet's eggs were flat, kind of like the ones at Jack's in Aina Haina, and the ham was cut in strips that were too long for the inside of an omelet. I was also disappointed that the hash browns turned out to be the same thing you get at McDonald's (though they don't have McD's on island). The prices were kind of high (not resort prices, but still not cheap), too, though perhaps we can blame Young Brothers for that. Again, though, not horrible. The food is edible, and at least it's open for breakfast, unlike pretty much everything else in Lana'i City. If you're staying at one of the Four Seasons resorts, you can catch the free shuttle to the Hotel Lana'i and walk here from there. read more
