The pork with noodles was was a pleasant surprise, and when it came out, I thought it almost was like a stroganoff. The service was excellent and I was surprised at how few people were there for lunchtime on a Saturday. Stopped by Blue Koi on our last trip to Kansas City. When you arrive parking can be found in front or off to the side of the restaurant. When you walk in the restaurant feels warm, inviting, and inviting dumpling house. To be seated you'll check in with the host and then be shown to your table. To start we ordered the Chili Pepper Wontons (wontons are filled with a shrimp, pork, and chicken mixture and then topped with cilantro, scallion, and a chili sauce) which were not as good as I remembered and the flavor seemed off. For our entree we split the ginger basil chicken (Bite size tender thigh meat sautéed with sesame oil, ginger and fresh basil) which was good but the noodles were a bit undercooked. We visited this restaurant after a couple of years things have changed. There is change in the menu. There are specials that we haven't seen in the past more than anything. The ambience of this place never changed. It is a very good spot in between the town center of Leawood, which makes it very blissful place to go take a walk and they're amazing restaurants within this plaza area. It was a beautiful sunny day. I have to go with my family and a newborn we ordered chili wonton steamed with shrimp, fried tofu with awesome sauce, scallion pancake, rice noodles with extra spicy duck and black bean sauce with tofu. To be very honest with you, I felt that the scallion pancake and the black bean tofu was salty, but the team was very courteous and understanding when I gave them a feedback. They did receive it very positively and asked me if I want to change it, but then I did not since I didn't have time the service was outstanding. They were very nice people. Great place for Chinese food. The dumplings were large, plumb, and well made. The ginger basil chicken reminded me of my mom's braised chicken. It was well seasoned and very tender. I went here mainly to try the duck wrap! It was delicious. The duck is moist and flavorful and there's just enough hoisin sauce, and wrapped in a tortilla works surprisingly well. The bean salad that came with it was savory and refreshing. I also got the pork and shrimp pan fried dumplings, since the duck wrap is just an appetizer and not enough food. I thought the filling was flavorful and generous, maybe a little salty, but I wasn't a fan of how thick and doughy the dumpling wrapper was. I wouldn't get this again. One of the best Chinese restaurants we've eaten at had the shrimp and asparagus with homemade noodles OMG it was delicious hubs had chicken with brown rice we weren't ordered for the bowl of food so gave about three meals out of this visit. Ok, I love Asian food and have eaten it all my life starting when I was young in NYC going to China Town, and then in San Fransico, LA and many other places including most of the Chinese restaurants here in KC. But I've never been to Blue Koi until today when I went to lunch with a friend. I expected a high level of complex flavors and variety. I ordered the Braised Pork with noodles that comes with a rich broth and Shitake mushrooms. 20.00. The flavors were pretty good, the mushrooms were more like little pieces rather than nice, thick slices, the noodles were cooked well, and it was served with a cucumber salad on the side of the bowl. The pork was very tender and somewhat borderline size wise in terms of needing a knife to cut them with, rather than have to bite a piece off to have a manageable sized piece to eat. I would have preferred to have a knife to cut them up into smaller pieces. I would recommend that the meat be like pulled pork so that it's more manageable and distributed throughout the dish. The atmosphere inside was pleasant and not loud. Overall it was not bad, it just wasn't great or stand out, which given the prices they charge I would have expected things to be on a higher level flavor wise. Soups are around 20.00, hopefully at least 2 people would be able to split an order and about 1/2 the menu was dumplings. So for me at least, it was a one and done and I won't go back. There are just so many other choices for Asian food here that I think have better variety, taste and are priced more reasonably. After taking a second look at the menu, maybe I just choose the wrong dish cause I see some I probably would have picked if I were redoing. read more

We ate again at the Blue Koi and it did not disappoint. This time I talked with our server and I decided to try the black bean sauce with shrimp. I almost didn't because I will love their soft noodles, but I am so glad. You need to look at the picture. I took it of this dish. Of course you can't see the flavor but there was plenty. We had Shelby, and she was so AMAZING! She took the extra time to acquaint us with the menu and how to order since we never been. Blue Koi is the perfect balance of quality, quantity, and consistency, with prices that still feel like a steal. The sauce--infused with chili oil, cilantro, scallion, and soy--is pure umami magic. Legendary doesn't even do it justice. If you're vegetarian, they've got a version for you too, so no one's left out. You can choose steamed or pan-fried dumplings--I always go with pan-fried. That crisp golden shell gives the perfect contrast in texture and just deepens the flavor. You get eight dumplings per order, and while it's listed as an appetizer, it's more than enough for a full meal. We also always order a pot of jasmine tea, which is fragrant, fresh, and the real deal--none of that bagged stuff. Loose-leaf, aromatic, and the kind of caffeine that lifts you gently instead of slamming you like coffee. I wish I knew where they sourced it. The vibe during off-hours is peaceful, but during peak hours it's bustling with both takeout and dine-in crowds. Looking for a quick appetizer to munch on and saw this place with variety of dumplings and noodles. My bf and I decided to try since we don't live in the area. They have alot of cool deco inside. As always, we had a very good meal. Being in our early to mid 70's, we don't eat as much as we used to. We had the Special, which was Spicy Buns, and the combination fried dumplings. I've followed them from their place off of 39th, to this completely out of my way location, albeit not as often, but they are still my favorite of all favorites! Ended my 2024 here in the evening with one waiter manning the entire restaurant. It was busy and with slow service, but nothing to be held against him. He was super nice and did a great job. Ordered our usuals, Almond Joy Bubbles, blended, with Kahlua. Fried Combo Dumplings and Fried Veggie Dumplings. And Fire Bird all around (duck, chicken and tofu). I was in KC for work and my mom INSISTED that I make sure I went here. She had seen it on DDD and had been thinking about it since. We headed in and gave it a try. We knew we wanted the chili dumplings. I have only ever had this kind of dumpling steamed but the server said that the most popular way was pan fried. So we went with majority. Man this place used to be my favorite spot to get Chinese food. My family had been coming here since the late 2000s. Seems like in my long absence the menu has changed pretty noticeably. My most recent visit I had the ginger chicken on a bed of rice. I was pretty excited but once it was brought out I was a bit disappointed as it appeared pretty plain. The ginger flavor was there but left a lot to be desired and had almost no veggies or much of anything besides the somewhat plain chicken and white rice. I saw this dish can be ordered with noodles, perhaps that is the correct way to order the dish. I'm not sure. My previous visit I had the almond chicken and asparagus and that was pretty damn good. When I return I will absolutely order that again. The staff were great, and helped my partner narrow down her entree decision. The bubble tea was good and came in a very large to go cup! read more

TL;DR: Blue Koi is still my tip-top go-to for Chinese in KC. If fresh noodles and bold, creative flavors are important, this is your Chinese spot. I don't often update reviews, but feel this one was warranted. We've been back many times since the last, and the most recent was a wonderful example of 5/5 service for a "difficult" table (mostly because of size of party). Our waiter was outstanding, tending to a party of 20, where people came and went. He kept orders straight, refills flowing, and a smile the entire time. The food, cornerestoned by the illustrious FIREBIRD (WITH noodles!!! Don't forget!!), is still top notch. You still MUST get noodles, you still MUST get dumplings, you still MUST get......... okay, you get the gist! Still prone to be a little loud with a weekend crowd, achieving a strong ambiance in a wide-open dining room is tough. But, it's kept to clean standards. The pan fried dumplings were not good because the pork filling seemed to have been too chewy, perhaps they are freezing the filling since they sell so many. We had the Cantonese Duck with noodles which tasted like dish water, the fried tofu was good. The service was lacking because when we needed to take home the uneaten portions, we expect the server to take the dishes and pack them for us, instead we were just given take out boxes to pack ourselves and had to ask for an additional one. We were quickly seated in an beautifully designed restaurant with an open layout and a view of the kitchen so customers can see where the magic happens. I went with my older grandparents who have a lot of accommodations, and staff was friendly and helpful the whole time. We ate here because it is one of my grandma's favorite, and after one meal, I can see why. I ordered the Firebird with chicken and was loved it. Every bite was loaded with excitement as the flavors and spices combined together in perfect harmony. Not overwhelming heat, but just enough to awaken the rest of the aromatics. They were round, and a little awkward for me to handle with chopsticks. I was surprised that dining in used disposable wooden chopsticks. The noodle wrapper could have been a little thinner but overall, very tasty. For the noodle dish, I got braised pork and shiitake mushrooms. The pork was plentiful and super tender. I wish there had been more mushrooms but the few that were there were plush and soft. The noodles were thick cut and very filling. The dumplings took a few minutes and the noodles arrived about 2 minutes later, so a little fast. Service was good. My server checked on me often and looked out for me. From one visit, it seems like Blue Koi's menu may be a mixed bag. Service was great and the place was quite busy. It's not a family-style restaurant, so it seems like some of the entrees come with rice by default. 1.5 stars - Home style scallion biscuit ($8): Their green onion/scallion biscuit (often translated as 'pancakes' in English) were way over-fried and crispy, like if your first thought to describe Midwestern food is 'artery-blocking'. They were also pretty salty and didn't have enough onions in them. 1.5 stars - Shrimp dumpling (pan fried, $11): They were out of their pork dumplings. I was hoping these would be similar to shrimp wonton, which I like but I'd rather get some frozen ones from an Asian supermarket than eat these. The shrimp pieces were huge but the dumplings just lacked flavor. For the price and taste, I wouldn't order these again. 2.5 stars - Blue Koi duck wrap ($10): This was like a burrito. The flavor was sort of there due to the hoisin sauce, the meat was filling and well-portioned, but it wasn't like what my friend was expecting, which was a peking duck pancake wrap (thin wrap, scallions, etc.). Also, it was kind of dry. 4 stars - Chili pepper wontons ($12): Packing some heat! The wonton fillings all kind of blended together into one solid mush which I don't love (I like when there are separate ingredients you can taste), but there was a lot of filling and it was savory. I really enjoyed my experience at Blue Koi! I met up here for lunch because I knew it had some plant-based options. I was told that even though the label on the menu says vegetarian, that most of the vegetarian items are vegan. I ended up sharing the vegan vegetable dumplings, vegetable wonton noodle soup, vegan tofu ants on a tree, and the Chinese curry with tofu. Their noodles are much too thick for my liking and so are the dumplings and wontons. The wrappers are just as thick as the noodles which are very chewy, but I really enjoyed the wonton and dumplings filling. I wasn't a huge fan of the Chinese curry, but I, and my group, LOVED the ants on the tree. It was so flavorful and delicious. I loved the various textures in this dish. Highly recommend!
