Once a great facility, now a death trap. A few years ago, when it was under different management, I had taken an elderly cat of mine when he nearly strangled himself with electric cords. He returned again with more emergencies. Each time, kitty received excellent treatment, the vets were accessible, answered questions and were responsive to discussion. Both times that 20 year old kitty returned home full of vim before dying naturally at the age of 23. I don't know what's with the new management, but my experience over the past few weeks has been ghastly with my cat dying of sepsis--freaking sepsis--a fact they did tell me about until the last hour, even though the cat had been in their ICU for almost 2 days at that point. Vets were difficult to get hold of, technicians brushed off questions, and the last vet was just patronizing and pushing for euthanasia when she should have been apologizing for missing the obvious signs. My kitty was originally diagnosed with lymphoma in May, his chemo sessions had been rocky and I could deal with losing a cat because he was no responsive to chemotherapy. That I understand. But he kept getting persistent infections, and management was poor. It's hard to get a vet on the phone or even in person when I went in to check on my kitty. On Wednesday he received his chemo, and was chirpy and friendly when I picked him up at 6. On Thursday morning, one eye was glued shut with exudates. When I rushed him back in the evening, they dismissed him with some antibiotics for his eye and said it was ulcerated. How did no one notice he had an ulceration in his eye when he apparently got a full check up just the day before? Ulcerations form in a matter of hours? The next day Friday, I had to take him back when I found him collapsed. They said he had low BP and put him on fluids. Great. I check in Saturday, and his BP is slowly inching up. Awesome. i look forward to taking him home. There is no vet around for me to talk to, when I ask a tech, I am given the brush off. Saturday night I go there, his blood pressure is still low but holding stable. But I notice he is drinking water like crazy which is just not like kitty at all. I mention it to the tech, again, she just shrugs her shoulders. Hello! Atypical thirst is a red flag!! Sunday morning, I call. and I am told his BP has crashed and I should euthanize him right away. He has sepsis and will die in hours otherwise. What. The. Fuck?? I am being charged a $1000/day and no one noticed that he had sepsis until the last minute when there was nothing left to be done? The worst was the vet who kept making me feel guilty for trying to save a pet, and pushing me to euthanize. Do your job and monitor the patient! Not ignore and neglect red flags and then rush the owner into euthanasia because you are too blind to notice symptoms that even a non-vet recognizes as bad. I have spent thousands of dollars at that facility and don't grudge a dollar in taking care of my pets. But, there are other places to spend your money and get better care. Now, in their reply to my review, BluePearl is showing themselves to be either incompetent record keepers or dishonest. Truth is, I took my cat there first in Aug 2020, returning recently for euthanasia. My name and contact info was accurate then and still is--nothing has changed. I have both invoices as proof. My cat got ill and my vet suggested that I bring him in to Bluepearl because she felt his situation required immediate attention and she was not available. She called ahead for me and they were expecting me when I arrived. I was initially given a form that explained that the cost of the emergency visit would be $150. This didn't surprise me as I figure there would be extra costs involved in an emergency visit. When I got the final bill, the cost of the emergency visit had gone up to $200 and when I asked about this the only excuse I was given from the receptionist was "I gave you the wrong form". With the other costs added on top of this the cost of the visit was almost $700. For my cat to get a saline drip and have a "specialist" see him. I'm not sure why a specialist was necessary for something my own vet seemed to be able to diagnose over the phone, but it was a slap in the face in a time of high stress. When I went to see my cat after they initially admitted him, I was directed downstairs to a massive room that could only have been highly stressful for an animal to be in. It felt like my cat was in a factory where pets were treated like parts in a machine and there was no feeling of anyone actually caring. Needless to say, I didn't go back. When I came back later in the day to pick up my cat, I was handed over to an intern who basically read the doctor's written evaluation verbatim. He obviously didn't have the vaguest clue what he was reading and it was insulting that they even bothered. Fast forward a few months and I get a letter in the mail soliciting me for donations from an animal charity. While I do not have anything against this charity and I'm sure they do great work, Bluepearl shared my information without asking. I would expect this from a magazine company - not from my vet. Took my cat for a blockage. Paid almost 2 grand with military discount. I was concerned when I took him home two nights later about his behavior with urination (or lack of) and lack of appetite for food or water... The receptionist blew me off. Had to take him back to our regular vet Monday to find out his blockage was back and he had an infection. Found out Blue Pearl did not give him an antibiotic. I basically paid for a weekend stay and a catheter for my cat. Never returning here again. The only nice thing was the male receptionist when I went to pick him up, very kind. Too bad he works for an inept veterinary hospital. He could do better. When I called them to ask why they didn't give him antibiotic they said they didn't think it was necessary. His penis was full of puss from the catheter they had in him. They would not admit wrong, nor would they appologize. They didn't even offer an anti-inflammatory. When I asked why they said cats kidneys can't take it... So why did my vet give me one? Oh that's right, because they could have given us one special for cats. I called three times last night questioning his behavior. I have call records, they said they only had two calls recorded. We would have taken him back for more care that night but they said "its normal" "he should be okay". This business doesn't even deserve a star. They asked me what I want. If I knew a lawyer that wouldn't charge for taking this case I would sue for misguided care and torturing my animal. Even my vet was shocked they didn't administer an antibiotic. The crystals in his bladder were cutting it up! All they did was keep him alive through the weekend and very poorly. I should have taken him elsewhere. I'm glad I didn't listen to their ideas and took him to my vet as soon as possible. read more

Huge Kudos and lots of gratitude to all the internal medicine crew! My dog Abby first visit here was very late at night and I was distraught when told she had an autoimmune condition. Her platelet count was 0 and she had developed, in a matter of minutes, severe bruising. She was hospitalized for 5 nights and the survival odds were low. Dr. Pacifico and Dr. Ferrari where the attending physicians and they saved her life. In addition to their expertise I believe that their kindness and caring played a big part in Abby pulling through. I don't remember the names of the nurses and other staff but they too were instrumental in her recovery. Their positive attitude, cheerfulness and empathic approach with me (who was a mess!) and my family was exceptional. It has now been almost a year and Abby is fine but continues to be periodically followed by Dr. Pacifico and Dr. Ferrari. There's no question that it was an expensive ordeal which is why pet insurance is sooo necessary, but it was well worth it. Thank you all for saving read more

Guys, this is my first review on yelp and I created a yelp account just to write this review. I really want to warn you DO NOT GO THERE!!!!! Here are my reasons. I took my teacup poodle to blue pearl because her liver levels were so high and she was not eating well. After examine my dog for 5 mins the vet decided to keep her under ICU.... And then in the next 3 days they did all different kinds of tests to her but still couldn't figure out what she had. I ended up spending total 6000 dollars in 3 days without any answer given. But this is not the worst. One of the nurse there accidentally cut my dog's leg when she was putting a needle in her leg. But she not only didn't tell me but sew her leg without telling me. I found out later on my own. All in all, people are mean and they are not professional. The service they provide don't deserve your money. I'm already a victim. If you don't want your pet to suffer or die, please don't send it to blue pearl. read more

I went to Bluepearl because my cat's eyes were in distress on a Sunday night, and my primary vet's office was closed. First they misdiagnosed my cat's eye ulcer as being an allergy - this is a truly ridiculous misstep. And they charged me $250 for the privilege. Resulting in his eye not being treated properly for a further 4 days, and causing a much more massive recovery process and a further $500 in vet bills from my local vet (who fortunately was able to treat him without surgery, which seemed very likely and would have cost me thousands of additional dollars that I don't have). Then, when I contacted them to let them know that they had made this very significant mistake and to ask if it were possible to get refunded (I am not a wealthy person and was just trying to take care of my pet, who is my baby), they took weeks and multiple calls for me to even discuss my case, and then to tell me that their "internal review" rather conveniently found that the vet had done nothing wrong. They had mentioned in one of my first phone calls with them that they might contact my primary vet for my cat's medical records. They in fact didn't do this, and based their entire "review" off of their vet's notes. This wasn't ok and I got my primary vet to send them my cat's records, and then again they "conveniently" found that they had done nothing wrong and I wouldn't be getting any sort of refund. Eye ulcers are extremely easy to catch, so if my cat had an eye ulcer when he went in then there's no excuse for them missing it. My primary vet told me that it was possible my cat had a small ulcer in the corner of his eye, but for $250 this type of thing needs to be checked. Bluepearl told me that it was possible my cat in fact had an eye infection that then turned into an ulcer, and so their vet's course of treatment was appropriate. What I'm hearing is that they didn't give my cat appropriate antibiotics (while panicking me and making me scour my apartment for imaginary allergens) and so his eyes got worse, but that they're still saying they are above error and I'm screwed. My visit itself was not handled well, my cat did not receive adequate care, and they charged me an unacceptable rate. I will never go back to this clinic, and I view them as being an unethical business. read more

It's Easter Sunday and our dog had a very upset stomach and loose stool (to be polite) for over 24 hours. It was an emergency and she couldnt control herself, she clearly needed medicine and an examination to ensure it wasnt anything more serious. We rolled into BluePearl around 2pm and were out by 240pm w meds and a full check and everyone was super friendly and helpful. They even cleaned her backside well as she was messy. My pup is 11.5 year old cocker spaniel and she already feels much better only a few hours later. My experience beat expectations, I can only speak for my trip to BluePearl, but I would go back in a heartbeat if/when needed. Good luck!! read more

Until today.. I had a very high rating for Blue Pearl Midtown.. My cat has FLUTD.. a condition that is caused by stress.. My Regular Vet who does housecalls suggested I bring him there because of the ability to do testing.. Cut to the chase.. The Vet that saw my cat refused to help us because I wouldn't switch to the crappy food she recommended. And.. one of the preventative treatments for this condition are tranquilizers. I asked about them.. her reaction " I am not a prescriber.ask your primary care" this was after I had explained my Primary doesn't have the ability to do certain diagnostics and recommended i bring him to Blue Pearl.. So, because I won't use the food Blue Pearl makes a profit from. my cat has to suffer. Because as patients , we are deemed to be too stupid to partake in the process, my cat has to suffer?? Nope.. this Vet must learn that Pet owners are participating in the care of their animals. We have a say.. YOU have the obligation to minister to your patients and get your personal bugaboos out of the way.. read more

I called Friday morning to get my dog's seizure meds refilled and still nothing on Saturday afternoon. I called Blue Pearl and was told a message was left for me about how my dog needs an appointment first before she can get refills. First of all, there was and is no message. Second of all, I have taken my dog to her main vet at to get her bloods drawn and she is doing great on her Keppra (we forwarded her bloodwork results to Blue Pearl around two months ago). I do not have time to bring her to the vet every few months just so she can get her seizure med refills. This is holding someone hostage and withholding life-saving medication so your vets can get paid for unnecessary visits. I urge you all to stay away from this money-hungry and heartless clinic. read more

I DONT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE, UNLESS YOU HAVE TONS OF MONEY TO WASTE, AND DONT CARE ABOUT THEM DELAYING YOUR PET'S TREATMENT!!!!!!! This place will rip you off if you do not have insurance, and expect to pay 6 to 8 times of what you would normally pay in other clinics. If you try to take your dog out from Blue Pearl, you will receive nothing but a curse! At lease, this was my experience. My dog spent 2.5 days at Blue Pearl, I paid $5000+, and guess what? She became more ill!! Even though I can tell she is getting worse, they keep on telling me "oh, she is doing better", and then hit me with a "bad news" on Sunday morning that "she is very ill, she is doing very bad...need an ultrasound". What kind of disease my dog has, you ask? Just Parvo. Ultrasound for parvo puppy?? And no antibiotics on the first day??? Selling salt water for $150?? Seriously? Wow, I can't believe they call themselves "specialist" when they do not know how to treat a common virus efficiently. So I took out my puppy and transferred her to another clinic for the 24/7 care. She spent another 5 days there and fully recovered! And how much did that 5 days cost me? $600!!!! They wouldn't "recommend" you spend money on the ACTUAL medication (I asked for better and stronger antibiotics, and they said "oh but its' more expensive, its going to cost over 100 dollars" when their little ICU box costs $350 a day). They will also sell you unnecessary tests because they are expensive! I visit my puppy 2-3 times a day when she was in the ICU at Blue Pearl. Every time, I have to wait for more than 1 hour, sometimes even more (3 hours), even though they told me I only need to wait for 15 minutes! And you have to keep on "bothering" the recipients to call the ICU, because otherwise they will forget about you!! And every time I visit the ICU, I see the vet tech forcing animals. For example, one time I saw the vet tech trying to give a cat shot, and he pinned the cat's head down on the table, and the cat was screaming like CRAZY!!!! You can call me picky, but I am really concerned about my dog. Yes, the doctors explained what Parvo is, etc, those are all the obvious stuff that even biology dummy like me could easily find information online! I highly suggest any dog/cat lovers do their homework, search the symptoms and disease online instead of totally relying on hospitals like Blue Pearl. Because if you believe everything they say, you will end up pay TONS of money!! And you pet will die at the end. And did I tell you that when I try to take my dog home, they told me it's better just to kill her if she is not receiving any more treatment from them? These people are sick!!!! Avoid this vet. Went here on a Sunday with our new puppy to check an ear itching problem because our regular vet wasn't open and they were very cold with horrible bedside manners. The vet tech we had asked us in a VERY awkward way how we would want our puppy to be resuscitated if he went unconscious...I understand they have to ask that but they could've been A LOT more tactful in how they went about it. The whole place feels like a cold scary lab, much less like a friendly vet office. At least you won't have a group of un empathetic "vets" harassing you about money once your baby is gone. This place is bullshit. They don't care about your animal. Take your baby to AMC instead. Trust me. I learned the hard way. Three months after the death of my beautiful baby, I am still being harassed by this joke of an "animal hospital". Sending me (incorrect) bills, phone calls from highly uneducated employees... Here is a piece of one of the MANY emails between myself and the AMAZING staff at Trupanion (HIGHLY RECOMMEND)- ...."Jaime Lopez at Blue Pearl has threatened me with debt consolidation and I have also received a letter saying that if the (incorrect) bill is not paid in full by this Friday the 15th, that it will affect my credit. Which cannot happen. ...This drama seems to get more and more confusing as we go. Please reach out to us tomorrow. Worst case scenario, the bill will be paid in full on Thursday and we will expect to be reimbursed for the MULTIPLE mistakes made by the awful workers at Blue Pearl. Trupanion is an example of how a business should be run- all employees are kind, compassionate, patient, and work as a team, helping the clients in every way they can, with knowledge and in a fast and efficient manner. Trupanion's employees show that they CARE. I have never spoken to anyone at your company who has been rude or harsh in any way. When we lost Harley, not only did we get a personally written and signed card from every employee there, but I also spent hours talking with a lovely woman, sharing our pet loss experiences, and even sending photos back and forth in emails. Blue Pearl has displayed the polar opposite behavior- completely disorganized, highly uneducated and extremely rude staff, poorly educated doctors- lacking compassion completely. Harley's oncologist did not even reach out to us after her death -nor did anyone at Blue Pearl - to send their condolences. Instead we have been getting harassed by complete morons about money money money. Money that we don't even OWE them. Anyway, sorry for venting but this is extremely upsetting for me and I think I now have my second review for Yelp. The first one already turned over 15 people away from Blue Pearl. And 5 people have joined Trupanion after my boyfriend and I have shared with others how amazing you are. Anyway, STILL haven't heard from them (big surprise). Let's try again tomorrow. We went to Blue Pearl in early July b/c our dog was swatting at his eye. 2 months later, it's unclear if our dog, who previously had perfect sight, can see. You decide whether you think Blue Pearl is at fault. 7/6/14 My dog was seen by a BP ER Dr. who felt he had spastic entropion & a corneal ulcer in one eye. We were told to return the next day to receive eye tacks as the ultimate treatment (sutures or staples are inserted very close to the eyelid to hold the lid in place and stop it from turning in and scratching the cornea). 7/7/14 He was brought back to BP to receive his tacks. The Dr. chose to use staples as tacks rather than sutures. 7/11/14 He was brought back and seen by the same Dr. because it appeared as though he was irritated from the staples in his eyes. Dr. confirmed that the ulcers had healed and consequently, she removed his staples. 7/12/14 (technically 7/13 b/c it was 1:00 a.m.) He was brought to BP through the ER b/c he was in severe pain. We were sent home with pain medication. That day, the breeder informed us that it is customary to keep tacks in a Chow's eyes for several weeks - not 4 days, and we contacted BP and scheduled an appointment for him to be seen by the ophthalmologist on Monday, 7/14/14. 7/13/14 (technically 7/14/14 b/c it was 3:00 a.m.) He was brought to BP through the ER because he was in excruciating pain and screaming whenever we treated his eyes with the lubrication. He was seen by the ER doc who gave him pain meds & my wife literally slept in BP with our dog the entire night because he was scheduled to see the ophthalmologist at 9:00 a.m. 7/14/14 The Dr. said he had a hot spot on his face from the lubrication she prescribed. His face was shaved and he was prescribed ointment. She re-tacked him, using less staples, and told my wife to bring him back in the next day if he was still in discomfort. 7/15/14 He was brought back in because he was still showing signs of pain. The ophthalmologist increased the number of staples and told my wife to bring him in on Thursday (7/17/14) if he was still in discomfort. 7/17/14 He was brought back in because he was still in pain. This time the ophthalmologist was assisted by the Chief Medical Officer in his tacking. More staples were put in along with sutures. We were told that he would not be in any more pain and he was medically cleared for travel to our beach rental on 7/19/14 per our family's vacation plans & scheduled for a recheck in 2 weeks. VACATION July 21, 2014 He was in pain again and I called to speak with the ophthalmologist & was told she'd call me right back. Two hours later, a technician called to inform me that the Dr. had left for the day and that she recommended that we increase his lubrication. 7/22/14 His discomfort continued. I also noticed that he was developing visible sores (what looked to us to be blisters) in between his staples on his eyelids. We emailed the ophthalmologist to notify her of this and were told to treat the sores with neo polydex. We emailed pics of his eyes to his breeder who was concerned with the # of staples in his eyes & that he appeared to be having a reaction to the staples because of the red sores. Moreover, she expressed deep concern over the ophthalmologist's suggestion to treat the sores with neo polydex because, she said, if he had developed ulcers again, the medication (a steroid) could cause blindness. Unfortunately, we had already applied the neo polydex. 7/23/14 We noticed a red bump on his cornea. Panicked, we emailed the Dr & didn't hear back so we contacted a local vet and brought him in. The vet confirmed that he had 2 huge ulcers resulting from the staples (rolling in and scratching the corneas that they were intended to protect). Dr. recommended immediate entropion surgery, despite his significant inflammation. Our breeder's vet contacted us & strongly disagreed with the recommendation for surgery b/c he was so swollen, and encouraged us to bring the dog to him in Virginia so that he could properly tack his eyes. 7/24/14 We drove 8 1/2 hours to VA to our breeder's vet. The vet was appalled by his condition, confirmed that there was significant corneal damage & was unable to provide us with a prognosis for his vision. He removed all of the staples (one eye that had 30 staples [we are told that 5-8 is customary]), and re-tacked him using only sutures. 8/7/14 We brought him to Red Bank Animal Hospital in NJ for entropion surgery. Afterwards the Dr. told us that the damage to his corneas was much worse than he'd thought. He described him as having "tremendous, severe damage." 8/18/14 The damage to his eyes was so severe that his eyes were still not opened. We brought him back to Red Bank for a recheck. Dr. recommended temporarily tacking his eyes open to speed up the healing. 8/20/14 The doctor put 6 silk sutures into each eye to hold his lids open. He had 0 sight. 8/31/14 We think he may have seen a little yesterday. Pls. pray 4 him. read more

If I can give zero stars I would. Around this time last year they nearly killed my cat. The overnight staff told me they would follow the instructions sent by my own vet. Instead they nearly killed him. He became extremely ill during the evening and we weren't notified until the next morning. They claimed to have tried calling us all night and no one answered. I gave them 3 phone numbers to contact us and we were home all evening in case there was an emergency. Come to find out they over treated him and wouldn't take responsibility for it. To make it worse, the minute we walked in and before we saw the doctor we were handed a bill for about $2000! It wasn't until Monday that he finally got the proper treatment he was there for under Dr. Heft. He spent an unnecessary amount of time there due to their incompetence and we spent an unnecessary amount of money. After all was said and done what should have been at most an overnight stay landed up being nearly a 5 day stay and over $17,000 in medical bills. I would never recommend this place. read more

May you never need to use Blue Pearl's services. If you do need them, it's probably for something terrible that has befallen your special furry loved one. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. However, if you are in need of excellent care for dire pet situations, Blue Pearl is the best in the city. They literally saved one of my cats lives last winter and their attention and care was incredible. After a horrific experience at another vet (who will go un-named here because this is not about them), my Lulah developed critical hepatic lipidosis. I was beside myself when I finally got her to Blue Pearl. Was it expensive? Yes. It was really expensive. I am not going to sugar-coat that fact. However, what you end up paying for is a high level of care and for vets who are at the top of their game (think House MD for pets here). Lulah ended up hospitalized for 3 days and they kept us informed about absolutely everything they were trying and thinking about her condition. They really saved her from the brink of death (she had a critical level of fluid in her body that was taxing her heart and they were able to bring her back from that). They also were great with having us visit and troubleshoot with them which ultimately helped her situation as well. I highly recommend. But be informed that this is heavy-duty specialized emergency care and the costs are sky-high. My Lulah was worth it. read more

I'm not sure where to begin. My cat was diagnosed with HCM, and I took him to a cardiologist at this location for routine check-ups every six months. The cost for each visit was approximately $1000 - which is a small amount to pay as long as my cat is in good health. During our last visit, I expressed my concerns about my cat's deteriorating symptoms, despite medication. However, the cardiologist quickly dismissed my concerns, claiming that the echo looks fine. Even when my cat had difficulty breathing and resorted to mouth breathing, the cardiologist assured me that everything was fine and that there was nothing else to be done. I even told her that my cat's breathing rate has gotten worse, with the baseline of 40 breaths per 30 seconds. She said it's not a big deal then sent us home. Fast forward a few weeks, and my cat passed away due to cardiac arrest. He died in my arms on the way to the hospital. If you dont want to be broke, please DO NOT GO HERE!! My cat had a simple anxiety attack, it was late at night and I needed prescription calming medication thats all. The doctor was absolutely unprofessional. She scared us with her incorrect diagnosis. My cat was having a bad anxiety attack that's all. When I tried to communicate this with the her, she threatened to stop treating my cat and scared us by saying our cat will pass away if we take him to out of the hospital (this is literal blackmail) it was 11 pm at night so I didn't have much option but let her treat my cat with the most expensive treatment and all i was asking for is to get him some calming medication and the dr could proceed with whatever lung disease she thought my cat had. The next day I took him to another vet and they confirmed his anxiety attack, he doesnt have any lung or heart issues whatsoever. I spend ridiculous amount of money on tests and the bluepearl doctor still couldn't read the xrays or other test results correctly and came to a wrong diagnosis!!! Horrible money sucking place and absolutely rude doctors! They also mentioned the bluepearl doctor did not give my cat adequate amount of medical dosage per his body weight to calm his anxiety. I am extremely disappointed in Bluepearl and will never recommend this place to my friends and family. It is clearly a for-profit organization and does not give a damn about the pets or the pet owners. Only money minded people taking advantage of the pet owners!! read more

Blue Pearl is a truly amazing emergency hospital for pets and we would not go anywhere else. We've had two experiences there. First, Dr. Levitin saved the life of our (then) 11 year old dachshund who was suddenly paralyzed and required emergency surgery. She made a full recovery and in fact is about to celebrate her 18th birthday. Dr. Levitin is THE doctor for dogs who have IVDD and we are so grateful for him. Recently, our other 17 year old dachshund went into breathing distress. We rushed her to BP on a Sunday morning and the staff couldn't have been more wonderful. Unfortunately, she was not able to be saved but the doctor and entire staff were incredibly compassionate and supportive as we made the difficult but necessary decision to end her suffering. Blue Pearl not only has the best possible emergency medical care for animals in NYC, it also has a kind and wonderful staff. read more

The only reason this place gets one star is because they took in my cat swiftly and told us what my cat had. Otherwise: Stay away from this hospital!! And from Dr. Gretchen Singletary.. This place and this doctor traumatized our cat for nearly two weeks because he had to get his lungs drained and they didn't give him enough dosage to sedate him properly. Our poor cat felt absolutely everything and was in a traumatic state for two weeks. Not only this, our bill was overcharged on procedures that they DID NOT EVEN DO. We spent nearly a week trying to get this doctor back on the phone to help us with what meds to give our cat and even though she wrote "call me with any questions" - it's BS. The only way she even returned a call, after we were in hell for days afterward, was when we mentioned anything about money (them screwing up our bill, we paid over a grand)..... Money is the only thing this woman and hospital care about. They don't care about your animals at all. Disgusting people. Never again. read more

This was my second visit to BleuPearl. First time a year ago with my cat who was having seizures and needed a differential dx to rule out epilepsy and this time with my dog who had a sudden onset of gastrointestinal issues. The staff and Dr Francesca DiFroscia were attentive and kind. Dr. DiFroscia really took her time explaining the care my dog needed and I felt she had my dog's health and my financial resources in mind. ER care for pets is expensive and I knew that and didn't feel they were pushing treatments that were not needed. They were thoughtful and careful in advising me while letting me make my own decision. The staff that took care of my dog were kind and attentive and understood my timid dogs needs. ER visits with pets are always stressful and we had as much of a good experience as possible under the circumstances. Having been to human ER, this was by far much more humane and kind. My dog is doing much better and we are grateful. read more

UPDATED: I still wish I could give NO STARS. It took me a few days to grasp the message that Tony C. posted. Let me reiterate that Blue Pearl almost KILLED MY DOG and then charged we well over $10,000 to get him better, took NO accountability for it, even when I had an email from the Doctor saying she should have given him an antibiotic but didn't. Then to make matters worse when the credit card company reached out to Blue Pearl, they told the Chase representative, and I am quoting, "HE WILL HAVE TO TAKE US TO COURT TO GET ANY MONEY BACK." Just to be clear I tried to get some money back by disputing the charge AND Chase did agree with all my evidence BUT since I signed papers that relinquished my rights, papers I HAD to sign before they would give my dog back, YES THEY WERE HOLDING HIM HOSTAGE until I paid. So no Tony C. I will not contact you so you can tell me how I don't know anything and how it was OK that your Doctors and staff can take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable. Unless you are willing to offer me a reduced fee, I suggest at the least half of the bill, then I will kindly decline any further communication and from what I read, I am not alone in my dealings with Blue Pearl. read more

Never ever ever EVER bring your animal here!!!!!!!!!!! I brought my cat in because he peed on the couch. I thought he might be sick. Vet saw him, said he had a stomach ache, gave me medication to give him. Seemed pretty straightforward. A week later, I got a call from CITY ANIMAL CONTROL that my cat bit someone and they need to come visit the cat to check on it's wellbeing. My cat has never been outside except to go to the vet! When I called Blue Pearl vet, they told me they CALLED the CITY when my cat bit one of their technicians when it was having an exam!!! I mean, they couldn't have just told me!?!? Also - if the cat bit a technician and they were worried about it having rabies why could they not have just asked me for proof of its rabies vaccine, why do they have to call the CITY?! Now I have to deal with the city up my ass!!! My cat is spoiled as heck, I love my cat and I trusted these people with my dear pet!!!! NEVER TRUST THESE PEOPLE! If your pet is afraid of going to the vet and bites them (they bring it to a downstairs area) they will report you to the city!!!!!!!! I am filing a complaint with the state veterinary board and filing a lawsuit. read more

My cat was in bad pain in his urinary tract last Sunday morning and BluePearl took him in with no wait time, basically waited at the door for us. So efficient and professional, everyone was so nice and the vet really took her time to talk to me and explain what was going on and listen to and answered my questions. Blue Pearl, and Dr. Nathanson in particular, were amazing at caring for my dog Nola. Her medical advice and care taking were sound, and she also had a wonderful bedside manner, helping calm me during an extremely scary medical emergency for my pet. She was the perfect combination of a knowledgable medical professional and an empathetic animal lover. She asked so many detailed questions and also helped me work through making the right decision for my dog--balancing competing medical, emotional, and financial needs to come to the right decision. I took my Frenchie in to see Dr. Evans on a referral from my primary vet because he diagnosed her with glaucoma and, as a next step, she needed to get in to see an ophthalmologist (Dr. Evans). We had to wait 2 weeks to get in to see her (apparently specialists are in demand in NYC) but it was not a dire emergency as we started treatment to control the pressure. Dr Evans was extremely kind and thorough in exam- even calling my primary vet during the visit to update on prognosis and check on possibility of adding a particular medication because of the complexity of my dog's medical needs. She took time to answer all of my questions and was super friendly - as was the assistant and front desk staff. No one likes to be at the vets office and yes, it can be expensive but I'm extremely thankful this hospital with their specialists like Dr. Evans are around. Thank you! read more

I had an emergency with my little teacup chihuahua, to make the story short I think I was overcharged for what was done to her, even tho I understand animal services are a little bit pricey, but still... I didn't like when there was a point they took my baby away from me and made me wait a long time, I didn't know what they were doing to her.... No matter what, do not take your pet to Blue Pearl. I received a diagnosis and was told that surgery and biopsies were necessary for my pet's wellbeing. After $6200 worth of surgery, the diagnosis was incorrect, and surgery was unnecessary. Blue Pearl accepts zero responsibility in this matter, despite reviewing it with the Medical Director and other management members. I am thankful that my pet has recovered from the experience of care from this for-profit facility. read more

So the weekend my guy had his knee surgery, it actually turned out to be very anxious and worrisome. My dog wasn't eating; he was whining and totally out of it. NYC Vet Specialists were there for me at 3:00 a.m. when i was freaking out because I'd never seen him like this before. The vet on call stayed on the phone with me for 20+ minutes until all my questions were answered. We went over all the possible side effects from the surgery and she did a wonderful job easing my mind. It was as if she knew my pain and his. So patient. So wonderful. So helpful. So calm. We're approaching week 7 into my dog's recovery and he's his regular spazzy self although with extra jumpiness (now that he can without the pain that he's been living with for so long). My cat was diagnosed with liver problems - liver problems, oh no! - by my regular vet. Blood tests horrible, xrays horrible. It was too much for my vet, so she referred me to this veterinary hospital. Well, it turns out she was mistaken about the liver problem. The veterinary internist, Dr. Ghazlat, was a thorough and professional pro from the beginning. I wish all vets were like him, however, frankly the fees made me almost faint, which is why I'm not giving this five stars. Sixteen hundred bucks! That's just for tests, especially ultrasound, which my doc unecessarily ordered up because evidently she misread the xray. Anyway, this is a great veterinary hospital and yes, I would definitely go here again for something difficult. However, they've got to do something about their fees. I mean, come on! What if the puss actually had a serious illness? I'm not sure I could have afforded to treat him. read more

While Blue Pearl medical staff were incredibly helpful and well-informed, the admin. section of it all is a mess. The first thing you'll do here is prove you can pay for treatment. That's a bit worrying considering they're in the business of helping animals, but hey, that's corporate America for you. The second thing that'll happen is some unknown admin assistant will come take your pet away for their procedure without ANYONE letting you know what's about to happen and how long it'll take. Lucky my mom was there to step in and request the doctor come talk to us (who was busy at the time, but a very welcoming ER doctor came to reassure us instead). While you're waiting, if you're unfortunate like me, you'll witness pet cemetery people come to collect deceased animals RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES. They have a side entrance but this side entrance isn't blocked away from public view so I got to see three dead animals in garbage bags being thrown into the back of a truck, from the waiting room. I was horrified. I'm taking up my issues with Blue Pearl corporate, not the staff at the Manhattan location -- because everyone there was either excellent or well on their way. Just be careful of prices. Everything is ridiculously expensive and if you know of another animal hospital who can perform the same procedure, call them first and ask for a quote. I paid $1800 to remove a foreign object from my dog. read more

Ok, if you have a sick pet in NYC that needs specialist care - you basically have two options: AMC or Veterinary Specialists. Of the two, Veterinary Specialists is definitely the standout. Very new, modern technologies, professional staff, etc. I worked at the MSPCA Angell Animal Hospital in Boston and I feel that these two are pretty much on par with each other, in terms of being the best in their respective cities. Of course, whenever you deal with a hospital of this size you aren't going to get the same kind of personalized care that you get with a smaller practice. They have medical interns and assistants that deal with a lot of the paperwork that your primary vet would deal with in a smaller practice. Unless you have the misfortune of having to deal with a chronic illness, which requires extended one on one time with a specialist, you'll probably feel a little more like one of the masses here. But for emergency care or top notch diagnostics, this is definitely the kind of establishment you want to be in. Save the personalized care for your primary small practice doctor and bring your furry friend here when they don't have the facilities to help you. read more

Brought my Puggle here based on a referral from a vet I like. Service was fast. They got her in right away. After waiting a bit a doctor came in to discuss her symptoms. We asked tons of questions and although we got answers I was becoming increasingly skeptical of where she was headed. Meaning driving up the price. I asked this doctor to reach out to the original vet as she thought it may have been something different. She quickly shot that down making reference to how they are the specialists not the other vet whom she referred to as a "general practice" doctor. At that point we felt hamstrung. The amount of work they offered and eventually performed (yes I made the decision after feeling a bit scared into it) was VERY expensive and eventually learned not necessary. They even had the nerve to charge me an additional $95 for the sheets that my dog made a mess of. Overall I am glad places like this exist but I wonder when you will meet someone who actually does what is required vs. doing what is needed to pay the expensive rent they need to pay for each month. I would say I do not recommend them but to be honest I am guessing that most of the animal hospitals in the NYC market would do the same thing. So take this review for what it is. A common practice among most vets. read more

Honestly this is not a fun review to write because it simply brings me flashbacks of the stressful hours I spent there wondering how my puppy was doing in surgery. But I felt that I must absolutely speak to how pleased I am with the service they provided and the care they gave to my puppy, Mochi. Mochi was severely injured as a result of a traumatic dog bite. His bite wound was on his neck so it was not only a difficult place to perform a surgery but it was also critical to prevent infection. We originally took Mochi to his normal vet for a clean up surgery to put in sutures where the bite wound was. However, after three days, we found that it was infected and started leaking liquids. Given that it was 9pm at night, we immediately took him to Blue Pearl at the recommendation of our Vet. One of the emergency vets was able to perform surgery on him that night and returned him back to his the next morning. However, the results were still not great as the wound still not healing as quickly as they would like. That's when they decided it was necessary for Mochi to see one of their specialized surgeons on staff and Dr. Greenberg did an absolutely AMAZING job. He was extremely logical and very detailed in his explanation for the procedure, what he hoped to achieve and wanted us to be 100% clear in what he was proposing and what the outcomes would be. He did a great job with our puppy and his new method of not using stitches/sutures but instead bandaging the entire wound and letting it heal naturally proved to be successful. He even called in multiple times after the surgery to check in with us on Mochi's recovery and even made sure to get our Vet up to speed so they could do the proper bandage changes every few days as our vet was much closer to us. All in all, Bluepearl is not a place that anyone WANTS to go to, but when you need emergency care for your vet, I think they do a fantastic job. read more
