Wanted to drop an honest review here for those deciding whether or not to visit Blue Pearl based on the reviews. I myself was hesitant to bring my cat here for a neurological exam because of the negative reviews. I decided to bring him in because a neurologist appointment was surprisingly easy to get and my cat needed to be seen urgently after a sudden infection. My visit with Dr Sarah Stephan was amazing. She was SO reassuring, helpful, patient, transparent and clearly knowledgeable and well educated. She was earnest and objective in her advice and concerns. I felt immediate trust with her. She was empathetic and willing to answer any questions we had. Not once did she push unnecessary medical expenses or treatments. She was so kind and caring. We live in Bed Stuy and will 100% make the trek to mid town for her care again. My cat is better than ever after Dr Stephan's advice to put Smokey on antibiotics. We are so grateful. Emergency experiences are overwhelming and painful. I can only speak for my experience at but I am so thankful for Blue Pearl and dr Stephan. read more

I've been waiting (and still waiting) for someone to see my dog. There's no care or sense of urgency despite this being an animal hospital for urgent cases. This review is for both the Brooklyn and Midtown locations, as I went to both during the 10 long months that my dog battled brain cancer. Pork Chop unfortunately passed away a couple of weeks ago. (Note: One thing I want to say after reading some other reviews is to remember that vets aren't miracle workers. Sometimes, even their great intentions and expertise can't save an animal. Also, you should be an informed consumer, especially when it comes to veterinary care. Google can be a dark and dangerous place when you have a sick pet, but do some research on your pet's symptoms and talk to the doctors about all of your concerns. My experience is that they absolutely will listen to you. Finally, practice some patience. Sometimes it takes a little while to get paperwork done, get animals into procedures, get things ready for check out. Does that really mean a place has incompetent workers or doesn't care about animals? Try a little perspective, it's nice.) The great (what deserves 5 stars): 1. Awesome customer service: It can be inconsistent (see below), but when it's good, it's OUTSTANDING. Shout out to Regina, who works overnight in the Midtown location and was great about explaining what I needed to do to make sure I got meds, care, call back from the doctor, etc. in a timely fashion. There are many like her at Blue Pearl who really go above and beyond their calling to give great customer service. 2. Top notch vets: Dr. Levitin did his very best to care for Pork Chop. He always took cost into account and treated him with the utmost care, explaining everything to me in detail and helping me to consider all my options. I never felt any kind of pressure from him to be more aggressive in my treatment, which was really important to me when I was faced with my dog suffering from a terminal disease. Furthermore, when Pork Chop started having seizures when I was in Europe, Dr. Levitin communicated with the boarders directly to assure that Pork Chop got the best care possible even when I was gone. He's sometimes a little overbooked (see below) but it's worth it - again, he goes above and beyond his calling to help the animals and their owners. 3. Great nurses/technicians: Wonderful, kind and patient. Those are the words I would use to describe all of the medical support staff I came into contact with. They really cared about my dog, and they cared about me. They would give me updates on the phone when he was there without me, and would always facilitate me visiting him on the occasions when he had to stay overnight. Also, shout out to Angela in neurology, who is a damn peach. She was always so kind to us and upbeat and unbelievably thorough. Really appreciated her care. The not-so-great (why I can't give 5 stars): 1. Cost: Yes, we all know it's going to be expensive. But lord jesus, did I drop some cash here. If you have the option, shop around a bit to see if you can get the same kind of service somewhere cheaper. For specialists, you probably can't, and that's the way it goes - I don't recommend skimping on pet care. But if it's not an emergency, or if it's just general care, you might be able to save some money. 2. Inconsistent customer service: Rarely, but sometimes, the person on the phone is really not at all engaged with you at all and doesn't care. This only happened once or twice, and it was only in the Midtown location. So, in the unlikely event that this happens, you might consider asking to talk to a technician in the specialty you need. Or, if you get off the phone and don't feel satisfied that your questions were answered, call back. You'll probably get another person, who will be great. 3. Wait time for appointments/procedures/call backs: They have to give priority to emergencies, so you might have to wait, which is life. However, I suspect that sometimes the doctors/procedure technicians are a little overbooked so appointments can take more time than you expect. Given their level of expertise, it's not terribly surprising, but this is a place they could improve. If it's not an emergency, you're going to have to wait a while probably, so bring a book and make sure your buddy can handle a wait. You might also have to be a little persistent with getting a call back from a vet. However, remember that they give priority to emergencies, so if it's not urgent, be patient (and consider yourself fortunate that you don't have an emergency!) but bear in mind you might have to follow up. read more

I am writing this review for my experience with the dermatologist here--Dr. Abraham and her technicians. I am so happy to have found a specialist that gives so much effort when it comes to pets. The wait time was super short and she and her staff were informing me everything clearly regarding my dog's condition. She called back to ask a few times on updates on my dog after his skin biopsy surgical procedure and I just thought it was worth mentioning that she makes so much time to answer my questions and calling me to keep her updated. I am thankful that she was able to provide such an amazing service for me. I will be updating on whether or not the treatment eventually works, but I am really happy with my experience with Dr.Abraham! read more

yesterday 12/12/12 had a problem with my Kitty oillie I rushed her to blue pearl veterinary Hospital. I was a little skeptical because of the reviews I saw of the place Once I got there they were pretty fast helping me once I got to speak to the veterinarian doctor I was able to support that I feel that she wasn't sympathetic with me when I was explaining to her the situation, long story longer, the veterinarian tech came in to talk to me about the treatment they had for my kitty. And the option payments that I had for the treatment for my kitty. To be honest it was very expensive I not working or have any real income I explain to her I brought my rent money, I explain to the vet tech name Xyna how I felt about the doctor And my financial problem She went back and spoke to the doctor and they came back. With a reasonable amount for treatment I was really shocked at this time I really could afford. It was the medication for her but They do really care about the patient and the owner for what they did to me I am so grateful 100% because the other choice I had for my kitty was to put her to sleep. Detailed review below - but in summary, BluePearl is certainly not inexpensive, but you get the quality of care and service that you pay such a high price for. Their quick action saved my 4-month old puppy's life and made his recovery a positive experience (both for him and me). My puppy unfortunately had to come here for emergency surgery due to complications resulting from an unusual bacterial infection. He had appeared a bit sick for a couple of days before and the receptionist at my normal vet (Greenwich Village Animal Hospital) seemed unconcerned when I called to note his symptoms. She said the best they could do was schedule me an appointment a few days out, but that he was probably just fine as long as he was eating and drinking. Later that day it became clear that waiting was not an option, and I was refused an emergency appointment (in a tone that implied "you're crazy, just settle down"), so I nervously went to BluePearl (knowing I was about to spend a lot of $). Note to other pet owners: just because your family vet (or nurse or receptionist) is not concerned because your dog is eating, peeing, and pooping normally, trust your instincts if you feel something is truly wrong and get help! Waiting even another day or two would have cost my otherwise healthy puppy his life. The doctors (both the ICU doctor and the surgeon) were upfront and honest about the risks and benefits to the surgery, which helped me make an informed decision. Through the surgery and the next few days in the ICU, he was given excellent treatment and I was updated regularly, with two proactive calls each day from the doctor (who spent as much time as needed on the phone with me), and plenty of patience on their end as I called more often for updates. They also went out of their way to send pictures and videos of my puppy daily, which was very comforting (although at times sad) since I couldn't be there with him. It was nice to see the nurses out playing with him - he looked like he was having a good time, all things considered. From what I could see in the videos, conditions "in the back" seem excellent (clean, organized, spacious). The excellent care certainly came at a steep price and was quite a stretch to afford, especially for such a young dog. However, the quality of service (for the sake of my sanity) and, more importantly, top notch execution in making my dog better, was worth every penny. All significant expenses were previewed with me (and explained by the doctor) prior to them being incurred, so the bill - while extremely high - was not unexpected. I hope to never have the need to come back here again, but certainly would if ever needed, and highly recommend for anyone in search of emergency care when their family vet doesn't view them as important (or critical) enough to squeeze in for a quick appointment! If you can afford it, spend the money early if something is wrong (even if just a check up with a doctor) - it can save a lot of $, and potentially your pet's life, in the long-run. In August 2020, my 11 year old cat Sheeba suddenly started breathing fast. My vet was short staffed so sent me to Blue Pearl. It was a lung infection, I left her overnight to be monitored. I brought her home the following day, she was supposed to be better. They gave me antibiotics, because of Covid protocoles the whole experience was drop offs and pick up and remote phone calls. When I got home, I discovered that she was worse than when I had brought her in. She died at home a few hours later. I cold in for help and the night doctor there made me feel I was over-reacting. I thought that it was a freak experience and that they had done their best but did feel that a visual on my cat there would have convinced me to leave her there another night, or if someone had told me she could die, I would have too. Fast forward last week when my vet was away and I needed help with my other cat Padme. She was bleeding internally from what ended up being diagnosed as lymphoma. Though I was able to get checked in person this time, the cancer news and possible options overwhelmed me as they were given to me again over the phone remotely. I just lost my Dad to pancreatic cancer and I also had deja vu of when I lost Sheeba and said my goodbyes at Blue Pearl. So opted for a transfusion so she would feel better for now . This was in the morning, by the time I went to pick her up when they called me at night, I had decided to go with their suggested option of biopsy with surgery and potentiel chemo. The doctor was gone for the day. I was sent a report by email and given morphine in a bag and some anti-acid with no one explaining me in person what to do. They did not include prednisone which could have helped her heal. It is a common if temporary remedy for lymphoma. When I arrived home I discovered that Padme had a hard sticky substance all over her backside. They had not cleaned her up after the ultrasound and it took me 2 days to clean it up. Anyways I call in the morning to come in and they tell me that they don't have any opening until March 2 ( it's then Feb 7, this being a death sentence for my cat who was basically bleeding to death internally) , and to figure things up with my vet (who is still away until the next Monday). So I did, on the day she got back and we started prednisone and were planning to start chemo but it was too late. Padme got too anemic and weak and we had to put her down yesterday. To owners of small dogs or dogs needing a cardiologist - please, please, please do NOT go to cardiology department at Blue Pearl Midtown. We are longtime chihuahua owners and bicoastal so have multiple vets for our chihuahua babies that have been treated and seen by specialists for various cardio issues common in chihuahuas and know the drill when it comes to various health problems and treatments. Amidst a flurry of poor record keeping and administrative errors, Dr. Singletary did not review our baby's records and confirmed fluid on our dog's lungs and an enlarged heart. We came to this appointment as our dog was having more difficulty breathing and lethargic and wanted to make sure she was properly treated. Dr. Singletary insisted our pet was fine and did not need treatment or further tests for the fluid on her lungs and enlarged heart. I was surprised by this but trusted her medical expertise. Dr. Singletary was also rushed despite this being a scheduled appointment and even mentioned that she wanted to start the exam immediately because she had to leave soon. If she was unable to properly see my baby, she should have been seen another time or by another vet. 11 days later our dogs breathing became more laborious and we took her to a different emergency vet. After an XRay showed her heart took up more than half of her chest cavity and had significant fluid, the vet explained this left very little room for air in our baby's lungs. They immediately gave her anti anxiety medication, diuretics to remove fluid from her lungs, and put her on oxygen. About an hour and a half later, we planned to bring her home with us in hopes that the diuretics prescribed would remove enough fluid to allow her to breathe. However when the vet tried to take her off oxygen, he said she was struggling and we may want to consider euthanasia. Before making any decisions, we asked to see her and were able to hold and pet her while she was calm, comfortable, and on oxygen. Before the vet returned, Paisley peacefully passed without assistance and was surrounded by love and kisses. While I miss dearly my pet, I feel a tremendous amount of anger that the fluid on her lungs was dismissed as a non issue by Dr. Singletary - with no effort to further explore why it was there and how to treat it. Since the visit to Dr. Singletary, my baby's lung capacity was slowly decreasing as they filled with fluid and she could not go on despite being on oxygen. The diuretics at that point were too late. I could never trust Dr. Singletary again with any pet of mine and feel deeply worried for any animals especially small dogs that entrust their health with her. read more

She kept me updated all day with what was going on with my dog, spent as much time as I wanted discussing the diagnosis and treatment - never rushing to get off the phone. She also reached out to a number of her colleagues from other specialties for additional consultation when needed as things were discovered with my dog outside neurology. I'm only giving this place 2 stars because the check-in process was smooth, the receptionist friendly, and the vet tech that did the preliminary exam was fantastic. You all deserve a raise! It was when the vet came in that my experience went from pleasant to terribly awful. Alena Ferrigno was the vets name... when she came into the room and introduced herself it was fast and unpleasant, without eye contact, without a hand shake, and not even a hint of a smile. We brought our dog in at 2am in January because he was bleeding from his penis. Understandably we were concerned. The vet however didn't seem to be concerned at all. She did a very bare minimum exam (3 min tops) said she didn't see anything wrong, and right in the middle of my boyfriend asking a question she began to throw how much we owed her for the exam at us! He looked at her stunned and continued his question. Which she seemed annoyed with. He asked her what her thoughts were and she gave us a number of textbook terms but said we would have to come back on a "non-emergency" basis in order to have a full exam. We understood. We still wanted some sort of peace of mind however, and being that we were already $300+ in, which she so kindly interjected earlier, she then said that she could take him downstairs so that she could have a better look. We both figured it was the least she could do. She came back in about 10 minutes and still said she didn't know what was wrong. In fact she was subliminally implying that we were lying. "I see nothing wrong with him, if there was blood it's gone now, I don't see what you see." Etc.... I sat there appalled! She was so uninterested, almost sighing at us. It seemed as though our very presence was exhausting for her. You would think that being a medical professional, a vet, when she sees an animal come in with a problem and she doesn't know exactly what it is she would be more interested in figuring it out, for science's sake... but no. She couldn't have cared less!!! She was everything but a professional. My boyfriend asked more questions. Not because he didn't believe her but because when we saw a pool of blood dripping from his nether regions earlier and throughout the day it was just quite odd that all of a sudden he was squeaky clean. So, he went through possible scenarios of what could be going on since she didn't seem to have any thoughts of her own. She became further and further annoyed by his questions. She then got so condescending that she told him these words exactly, while rolling her eyes might I add. They were so ridiculous that I remember them verbatim... "I can tell you over and over again, I can show it too you written down or on video, I don't see anything wrong with him." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The audacity to be so incredibly disrespectful. We weren't pestering her, we weren't calling her a liar, we just wanted her to do her job and give us some sort of plausible explanation as too what could be happening! We just wanted something more than a sigh, eye roll, price check. Honestly, her multiple "I don't know's" would have been acceptable if she was even the slightest bit concerned, sympathetic, kind, friendly, professional, etc. Instead of getting into an argument with this obviously miserable individual we just paid our bill and left. Luckily for the next few days our dogs regular vet took great care of him and the problem subsided. The first doctor was very unprofessional and botched the first 2 operations missing all the stones in my dogs bladder each time. It took them 3 times to find all the stones, even though after each operation I was called told all the stones were found. I came here because my cat is bitting her tail hard and hurt her. I came in try to figure out what is the cause. We waited couple hours first. The ER doctor just took her down and clip her wound. She couldn't do anything beyond giving the collar and some antibiotics. The collar was very hard and hurts my cat's neck. Never come back. Two stars instead of 1 b/c they help clip hair and clean the wound. read more

The story is long and sad. There are some vets at Blue Pearl you can count on and it endorse them. But sadly, my dog suffered and though they "tried" to save him, there was one last internist who lacked empathy and did sent my dog home to die though she refused to admit that when i asked about it. I hold her responsible for my dog's suffering at the end of his life and she caused a great deal of trauma to me. Some of the people answering the phones were more concerned with how i expressed my anguish than my dog and the urgency that was unfolding and the whole situation was mishandled and unprofessional. After 10 years of singing their praise, my dog died from a mismanagement of his surgeries and treatment by the last internist treating him. I can never go back to this practice. No matter how many of the vets calked to give condolences and no matter if i got flowers. The traumatizing experience i went through with my dog was too painful. I think the majority of the team had good intentions and the unfortunate timing of not having the critical care vet there was an issue but, i just can't ever get over what we went through and my poor sweet boy. read more

A few days ago my cats hind legs gave out on her so I rushed her to the ER only to be charged $1500 for literally a list of reasons why her hind legs could have collapsed but no definite answer. I left with no medication to give her some relief for her last days on earth. When I called back asking about euthanasia DR. GIBEON quoted me at $550, the very least she could have done was wave the fee. That day was a waste of money, time (8 hours) while putting my cat in more physical stress than she was when I initially brought her in. This place is a joke. They're crooks. read more

I brought my 6 weeks old Bengal kitten to this emergency room in the middle of the night. As I found out later, the kitten had clear signs of panleukopenia. The doctor did not recognize it. My poor kitten was sent back home, suffering, with some anti-diarrheal medications, and the doctor assured us the kitten was fine. We paid 500$ cash. One and a half days later we took the poor kitten to another vet and doctors there suspected panleukopenia right away. But it was too late to save him. Our kitten was too small and he was suffering too much. I hate myself for taking my poor baby to Blue Pearl first and prolonging his sufferings. I do not recommend this place because they force you to have an appointment with them and charge you $210 even through in my case I only needed to know the price of the CT for my dog, my dog has already been checked for his primary doctor who explained to me that my dog needs a CT and a possible rhinoscopy and I only needed to know the price for those procedures to see if I'm able to pay but when I try to found out they told me that I must have the appointment with them, so the day of the appointment the doctor spoke with me for about 5 minutes, because who ask me all the information was not the specialist that I pay for, they took my dog away to check him for 5 more minutes and after telling them why I was there (to know the price for the CT) they told me something that I already knew that my dog needs a CT , told me the price and charge me $210 for that read more

My beautiful one and a half year old cat, Casper aka Puffy, suffered from some eye ailment for about a year. His eyes were red and scratched up and raw underneath. Looking at this beautiful puffy white cat could only made us so sad. We went from vet to vet receiving prescriptions for antibiotics which helped but only for a short time, each time. Poor Puffy was living on antibiotics. And poor us because it affected his digestive system. Kind Dr. Postler at the NY Humane Society recommended that I bring Puffy to Dr Abraham at BluePearl in Midtown. I was skeptical, and worried that it would cost a lot of money. Dr Abraham tested puffy for allergies and it turned out that he was allergic to... wait for it.... everything! He was allergic to dander, dust mites, pollen, dust, you name it, about 12 different things. Dr. Abraham put together a vaccine for him, I prefer to call it a potion because that's what it really was. Within weeks of administering it, on a schedule, Puffy's eyes cleared up. We give him this vaccine at home for 7 months now regularly and his eyes have never had a problem again. Well worth the $ which was not horrible and my thanks to Dr. Abraham and Blue Pearl. I've been waiting 3 weeks for results on a test my dog took here that should have been back within 11 days. Now I understand there is only one lab in the entire country that runs the test my dog had done, but one would think if the patient's owner has been calling almost daily to get the results, they would advise them once received right? No, instead, they finally got the results today but I now have to wait another day for them to review them with me since the doctor who handled it originally isn't in. Honestly, I don't care who reviews the results with me, I just want them reviewed! It's absurd! Especially for the amount of money they charged! If i could give zero stars i would. They have absolutely no real desire to help animals except to take your money. I came in with my 14 year old yorkie who had previously undergone surgery for cancer growth and has X-rays and blood work and urine analysis. I told he he had some cataract growth but the doctor a month prior said he woke vision. The staff immediately take the dog downstairs and another lady first words are if he needs CPR will you pay 2500 and authorize That. How crude and tacky!!!!! Then the exam was all of 20 min. Doctor says vitals are healthy - they don't even give the first dose of pain medicine!!!! Say you do it yourself and then charge 280 for the check up. Didn't even do a proper vision test to see if that issue progressed. RUN from this place!! Tons of other 24:7 vet clinics that will treat your fur family they way they should. well, where do i begin. several years ago my puppies helped themselves to my chewing gum i called Blue Pearl and they told me to bring them in NOW!!. they had them immediately on IV and caring for them beautifully but told me full care would be about 3k they had me hysterical crazy then someone told me to call ASPCA poison control about gum.. So after I told the ASPCA dogs their weight and the how much gum my dogs had ingested. This ASPCA vet was on it immediately called BLUE PEARL and told their vet to release the dogs immediately to me and to stop scamming me!! and that is just what they did and they didn't charge me! they were walking around with their tails between their legs when i came to pick my dogs up Always call ASPCA poison control first if your dogs eat something because they will be honest and accurate read more

I brought my dog in with a bad gastro-intestinal episode , I was "strongly advised" to leave him for the night , upon leaving a $3000 deposit , there was never a return call to my attempts to learn how my very sick pet was............I arrived (exhausted from worry) the next day at 11:00 , the receptionist seemed annoyed with me when I told her I called 4 times , always told I would be called back "immediately". Upon leaving, I was told I owed another $450 in "miscellaneous "!? , I asked what that was for , the response was, "oh , would you like an itemized receipt"?! , well yeah!!!!!!!.........who would 't!?!?! , Of course it is not about the money , but $3500 later , I would expect a level of care , we did not get......... I was overall , very disappointed , my dog is still very lethargic and will not eat (the day after I picked him up) , I will return him to his regular vet and choose The Animal Medical Center if we are "unlucky"again. read more

STAY AWAY: Dr. Nathanson is the only person in this clinic with an ounce of professionalism or care for animals. I was coerced into committing a non-critical dog with healthy vitals into the hospital for two nights. She presented with some GI problems and needed an ultrasound- certainly not an emergency situation. The reason she was kept so long? In 3 days/ 2 nights they couldn't spare 40 minutes for an ultrasound. The bill? Over $5,000. They were "so busy" all the time, but the only traffic I ever saw going into the hospital were delivery boys for food. Maybe that's why no one picks up the phone? Maybe that's why the vet can't step outside to speak to pet parents? Must always be lunch break. The final straw for me when I asked (on the phone, and one must be VERY grateful to get just a few seconds) how to give my dog medication. The Vet replied such an asinine question was "below her pay grade." Lovely people! This business runs like a cartel and, most disturbingly, denies owners any agency over what happens to their pet. I was charged for sedation when I explicitly did not give not consent to put my dog under general anesthesia. Furthermore- and this has haunted me for days- I watched them turn away a WAILING dog in apparent agony. Why? Because the family could not afford the estimate. These people do not love animals and only care about your wallet. If you can go ANYWHERE else, do so out of love for your pet. UPDATE: I took my dog upper east side VEG and they were wonderful. I was able to sit beside her during treatment overnight and and they were far more compassionate and patient explaining her diagnosis and plan of care. My 11-month old Labrador pup was badly mauled by a bad pit bull (not all pit bulls are bad, I understand ). He was stitched up by my local vet and I expected signs of recovery within 24-48 hours. Instead, my pup seemed to be getting much worse three days after the attack and I feared the absolute worst. After conferring with BluePearl Emergency Pet Hospital 15th Street on a Sunday, they referred us to Dr Marc Greenberg of BluePearl Midtown for a surgery consultation the very next day. Upon examination, Dr. Greenberg correctly diagnosed my pup's problem as "disassociated fat" that, disconnected from the blood stream, was not responding to two powerful antibiotics and was horribly infected and stinky. Dr. Greenberg surgically removed the infected fat and my puppy showed signs of improvement within 12 hours. Dr Greenberg made 3 follow-up calls to me inquiring as to my pup's condition and explained his medical condition(s) to me in detail but in a way that I could understand easily as a layperson. My pup actually "enjoyed" his follow-up visits to BluePearl. All the other staff I met there on our three visits were friendly and pleasantly solicitous. I was extremely pleased with our treatment at BluePearl Midtown and very grateful to Dr. Marc Greenberg for saving my pup's life. 5 stars from me! read more

Wow. First off, customer service was phenomenal - Urgent cares and hospitals can learn a thing or two. We were seen immediately and given instructions over the phone as well. While we were waiting, the staff proactively checked on the status of our pet for us. The staff was incredibly empathetic and compassionate. My pup had to stay overnight from some chocolate consumption and they explained all my options, the costs, their recommendations, etc. When we picked up Brady he was happy to see us, but didn't leave traumatized or anxious to leave. If God forbid there's an emergency emergency again then I'm definitely bringing my pet back here - they saved his life and made me feel better about the whole endeavor as well. read more

I would not recommend. It has taken me a very long time to write this review after losing my beloved cat. What you need to remember is this is a business and even though they love our animals, BluePearl still needs to sustain itself in Manhattan. My cat had kidney failure and they convinced me that a 1+ week stay at the hospital (almost $6K) was a good way to stabilize him, and increase the possibility of a longer life. Looking back I should have said goodbye earlier, but BluePearl gave me unjustified hope. He died less than a week after bringing him home. It was heartbreaking. If BluePearl was the hospital they said they are, they would have sat me down and told me to say goodbye to my friend. Instead he went through another 2 weeks of pain and Bluepearl earned a lot of money. It is a business. Always keep that in mind. read more

Advised to euthanize our young dog due to lab values that were not to their satisfaction. Meaning- dog was not recovering to their satisfaction even though was in good spirits, and eating. Clearly NOT a dog on her death bed. Would not let us see our dog during the 4 day hospitalization due to Covid? Oh wait- we can come see the dog if we agree to euthanize only. Wait a minute- so one can go to an NYC hospital to visit a human patient but an owner can not visit his dog? We thankfully took our dog out of that "funeral home" called Blue Pearl. She continues to do well 12 days later. They have traumatized our kids, and caused us significant emotional damage as a family. A shocking experience. UPDATE: 3 wks post this nightmare: all lab values are down- Our dog is in complete recovery!! read more

I am so grateful for Blue Pearl. No, it is not perfect, but there is literally no ICU I'd feel comfortable with leaving my dog when she's at death's door. But I am forever filled with gratitude that the staff at BP (Dr. Levitin, Dr Daly, Dr Singletary and Dr. Fox) saved my dog's life. I brought her in on Mother's Day -- she just hadn't been right (not eating, not getting up in the morning, barely walking). On the car ride over, she was unresponsive and I swore I thought she was going to die in traffic getting there. When we arrived, there were people waiting, but my dog (lucy) had collapsed. Literally, within 10 seconds of getting to the front desk, the well-trained staff recognized she was in dire condition and whisked her into the ER to get her on oxygen. I started crying and was told I could wait in a private room. Soon thereafter, an emergency vet (Dr. Daly) came in and told me that on evaluation, she suspected Lucy had Meningitis. She described the pain she observed in her spine, her affect and her fever. She walked me through what I could expect for next steps and prognosis. Also, I should note that her shift ended at 7 and she stayed until almost 10 pm running tests on Lucy and trying to stabilize her. She didn't rush me when I asked never-ending questions through sobs. Truly, her compassion amazed me. What amazed me more was that she turned out to be spot on, and meningitis isn't the most common of dog conditions out there! The next day, Dr. Levitin (neurologist) evaluated lucy and came up with several theories about what might be going on. He was in constant contact with me, making himself available on the spot to speak, doing her MRI and Spinal Tap. H she was also willing to hop on the phone with my mother, who seemed to be calling almost as much as I was visiting. Blue Pearl had their orthopedist look at her as well because she was unable to use her leg, AND Dr. Singletary (Lucy's INCREDIBLE cardiologist based out of BP, who has prolonged her life now for so many years managing Lucy's mitral valve disease) immediately did her echo/cardio tests to make sure she could handle the MRI and spinal. Meanwhile, Lucy received round the care clock in the ICU. They allowed me (and my friends and family) to visit basically any time except from midnight-9 am. I was allowed to sit there and talk to her, bring her toys and beds and blankies. They even let me carry her outside into the sunlight a few times. They took excellent care of her and were always available to chat with me on the phone to give me updates (in the middle of the night too!). I would say that not all of the ICU vet techs seemed like they loved all the animals, which bugged me, but this is life. They got their job done. There was one young male on her last day who really seemed to adore Lucy, and this made me feel more comfortable leaving her there. They keep to a strict schedule for meds and vitals, and lucy was hooked up to a heart monitor the entire time. She also had bells around her neck for seizure watch. It wasn't just lucy who received the stellar care either -- in the week Lucy was there, I got to watch their care of so many dogs. If you have to leave your dog in an ICU, BP will do whatever they possibly can to keep your dog comfortable and alive, hopefully on the track to recovery. However, I should let you know that they are also honest when it seems recovery is unlikely -- those were hard conversations I'm sure, but they did tell a few families that they didn't expect the treatment to work, and if not they might want to consider euthanasia. Lucy is now several months into treatment for her meningitis and she is doing so amazingly, it's really the most remarkable thing. I credit blue pearl for correctly diagnosing her and for getting the tests and treatment started immediately. Had there been a delay, we surely would have lost her. No vet is perfect, and come on, we aren't going to love a place where our animals go when they are fighting for their lives. But, BP has extremely competent and specialized vets you can't just find anywhere; Finding a dog neurologist or cardiologist can take a long time in other areas of the country, and then you have to get in line to get an appointment. Dr. Levitin stayed late every single day to make sure he got Lucy's tests in and always made time to check on how she was doing. These are people who care so much about their job, about saving lives. They wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to your dog's care. We are beyond fortunate to have such an incredible clinic right here in our home town. Thank you, BP. The BluePearl staff, night nurse, and Dr. Greenberg saved our 9-lb dog's life after she was attacked by two pitbulls. Our regular vet referred us for the emergency services/ICU and we could not be more grateful. Our pup spent the night in the ICU getting her blood pressure stabilized. A nurse stayed with her all night. The next day, they invited us to visit our dog, talk through her care, and give her a hug before she went into surgery. When it was time to pick her up, they were incredibly kind and gentle with her (and us!), and gave thoughtful, thorough instructions for her care. They answer the phone all hours of the day and night and will give you updates on your pet's condition and care. Dr. Greenberg was efficient, clear, and helpful.The front desk staff, other doctors, and nurses were all kind, generous and incredible. It was not cheap, but it was worth it. read more

Just had a rough euthanasia for my cat that I took in from my mom a week ago. He was skin and bones when I took him in. Recent blood work at another vet indicated cancer and liver failure. My hope was to make his remaining time as comfortable and loving as possible, and put him down when he started showing signs of distress. Well the signs of distress came a little sooner than expected in the form of seizures, breathing difficulty, uneven pupils, loss of bowel and bladder, and unresponsiveness. We raced to Blue Pearl just after midnight with this poor cat wrapped in a towel hoping for a quick euthanasia and an end to Patch's suffering. The staff gave me exactly what I hoped for. Regina at the front desk immediately recognized the severity and jumped into action. At first she thought it was an emergent situation and that Patch needed care. As soon as I told her it was end stage she and everyone else abided by my wishes and agreed that it was time. Patch was prepped and quickly put down. I am so thankful for their quick assessment and action. Afterwards they were very sympathetic and agreed that we had taken the best option. A wonderfully kind vet tech/assistant carefully prepared a mold of Patch's paw for us that I will relay to my mom. Regina sincerely expressed sympathy as we left. They did help my cat who was having trouble with asthma, but they should be mortified by how horrific their communication skills are. I have spent thousands of dollars at their business and they seem to find it absolutely impossible to return a phone call regarding concerns for my pet - and if by some miraculous chance they DO call you back but you miss it (even by 1 minute), you're going to have to wait another 3 days before anyone tries to call you again. Your concerns are often dismissed and it very much seems like their primary focus is seeing more people and earning more money, rather than making sure their current patients are taken care of. If your pet isn't having an emergency, I 100% recommend taking them elsewhere. BluePearl is far too expensive and unresponsive to be worth it. read more

If I could give less than one star I would. PLEASE READ!!!!! Please avoid this place at all cost. I have a 4 yr old Yorkie who got too excited and jumped off the couch, landed wrong and injured her spine causing her to not be able to use her hind legs. I first went to Veterinary Emergency Group on Ralph Avenue in Brooklyn and they were amazing, they were very thorough and did an X-ray which showed what they believed to be that her spine was compressed but recommended I see a specialist, unfortunately bc my dog needed a neurologist and they didn't have one Blue Pearl Midtown was the only location with one onsite first thing the next morning so I came here.(8/20/23) As I walked in the energy was unpleasant and unwelcoming. The receptionist asked why we were there and I explain, bc VEG called ahead they were expecting us. She then took my dog from me and went downstairs and said the doctor will examine her and let me know the next steps. I was uncomfortable with that bc who's to say they were going to really examine my dog especially having read a lot of the reviews and others complaining of the same thing and them just wanting money. At least at VEG I could be in the same room with my dog and see everything that was being done. After waiting an hour in a room I received a call from the doctor (Dr. Jeffrey S. Genus DVM) asking me what happened again I explained a second time and he insisted she had a neck injury, her front paws were knuckling and needed an MRI and surgery in the morning which is going to cost me btwn $12-14k. In addition to that it would cost $1,800 to keep her over night for observation and any meds to keep her comfortable. I found that strange bc that wasn't the case at VEG nor has he received the X-ray results from VEG. I asked how could he determine that without seeing the results from VEG or an MRI and the Neurologist he said that's what it's going to be. I also asked why is it so much and he got upset telling me he told VEG to let me know the cost before coming so my time nor his would be wasted. So with that he already planned to do surgery whether my dog needed it or not. I asked how much is the MRI alone bc with that we'll know if surgery is necessary and he wasn't sure, he said $500-$600. I asked why doesn't he know the exact cost and he began to stutter. (Another red flag). I wasn't comfortable and told him I needed time to think so he could bring my dog back upstairs with pain meds to keep her comfortable, he being annoyed said fine and hung up. After waiting another 30 minutes a nurse came up with a bill explaining the overnight cost trying to convince me that my dog should stay, I said no please bring her up I will find somewhere else...she agreed. I waited another 30 minutes and couldn't take it anymore so I went up to the receptionist and had them call downstairs then the doctor finally returned my dog to me with Nerve and pain meds trying to make me feel bad about leaving without surgery telling me she'll never walk again with out it. I told him I'll take my chances and left. Luckily I went to Animal Medical Center in the city and they took a CT scan and confirmed she doesn't need surgery and that nothing was broken she just had a really badly bruised spine and with physical therapy, lots of rest and being still for four weeks and the nerve and pain meds she will recover to full mobility. Blue Pearl is just money hungry and truly doesn't care about you or your pet. Please DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!! read more

Excellent animal hospital. The staff, all the doctors that saw my cat when he was there, the surgeon (Dr. Greenberg) all amazing! Attentive, communicated often and clearly - and my cat, who faced a life threatening emergency is now on the mend thanks to this hospital. I am very demanding and critical, and never write reviews but the experience I had at BluePearl, the extreme professionalism of everyone I came in contact with, and their wonderful attitude in a very stressful situation could not have been better and so I am inspired to share. Highly recommend. (Expensive, of course, but is there any vet hospital that isn't?) Hopefully, you never need an animal hospital, but if you do, head straight for BluePearl midtown. At 4:30 Saturday morning, our Pitty Cooper started vomiting and didn't stop. We ran him to our vet on 72nd st the minute they opened, where they took an x-ray. The X-ray looked like he had eaten a ball. The told us to take him to Blue Pearl to get an Ultrasound and that they would be waiting for us. We rushed him to get an Ultrasound at Blue Pearl....turns out he came from the shelter with such a bad case of worms that his small intestine and pancreas were being pulled into his stomach. They told us what they wanted to do. They rushed him in to surgery and saved his life. He was only 5 months old. They have taken amazing care of him and have given us updates constantly. I was asked to fill out a survey after my visit. I filled it out and because the price was so exorbitant ($10k) I answered that the price was the reason I couldn't give a better rating on the survey. They asked that I call them and ask for "Mickey Mouse". I did- I'm not sure why they wanted to chat- it was not a satisfying conversation- It completely pissed me off. Poor quality, abusive to animals and outrageous prices. On Saturday, December 8, 2012 I brought my cat into Blue Pearl for treatment because he was not eating and having trouble swallowing. Their doctors performed a series of expensive tests but failed to diagnose my cat correctly, which I believe led to the necessity to euthanize him only four days later. On Monday, December 10, I took him to my regular vet, Dr. Patrick Cotter, one of the top cat specialists in NYC. My regular vet, Dr. Patrick Cotter, found that my cat had the Calci virus. This is basically an upper respiratory infection, common with cats, and easily treated with antibiotics. It was unfortunately too late and my cat went into rapid decline. Blue Pearl never gave my cat an antibiotic. Dr. Cotter wrote a letter to support his opinion that my cat was not treated supportively and was grossly misdiagnosed. Blue Pearl refuses to consider this letter or refund any of my money. It was a horrible experience and I hope that I can prevent you from making the same mistake.
