Halibut Oscar with mashed potatoes and asparagus
    Phoenix A.

What went well? EVERYTHING! Came here for a few reasons, 1) to spend time with family, 2) to spend time with said family trying out a restaurant that no one in our party had been to yet, and 3) to celebrate the birthday of someone in our party. We made Saturday dinner reservations through OpenTable and were met with a most welcoming greeting by Vee. We were taken great of by our server Bruno and the rest of the attentive staff. Loved that the centerpiece of our table was a jar of pickled cucumbers and peppers available for us to partake in along with our bread and butter. With that I indulged in a Chopin martini up with bleu cheese stuffed olives. Libations were enjoyed with our appetizer pick of tuna tartare (grade A tuna, sesame oil, Hawaiian sea salt, and Sriracha) - deliciousness! For my entree I went against the steak consensus at our table and ordered the special, halibut served Oscar style with mashed potatoes and asparagus. No "regerts" whatsoever, all very tasty and flavorful. Also went against pairing rules and shared a bottle of merlot from my favorite brand, Frog's Leap (although I would have ordered the cab except that birthday boy got to choose). To close out our meal we shared the complimentary birthday dessert, a very dense chocolate cake, the Nilla wafer-crusted key lime pie, refreshingly yummy, and a rich crème brûlée. Our experience met the high expectations of our extremely critical crew - an ex server, a curmudgeon-y carnivore, a guest who makes neophyte servers cry (Bruno is a grown man so I think he would have been ok either way), a weekend warrior Iron Chef type, a whole table of wine snobs save for the designated driver. Lit with distant views of the golf course, the dining room has an intimate feel with high-backed chairs, rich cellar-like wood decor, acoustics that allow you to hear your table's conversations. Acoustics is a critical point for me because if voices are bouncing all over the restaurant and you can only hear that one dude who is not even sitting next to you, forget it. I said that the staff was attentive but not helicoptering. All of us would return here again for a special occasion. Bob's had been recommended to us by our parents and particularly discerning foodies. They were not wrong!

Came here for fancy steak dinner and heard lots of great things about this restaurant. I would say that the food is ok for the hefty price. I would have hoped for something spectacular for the overall cost of the menu items. Overall I think it was a very average steak dinner. The carrots are huge! The service was great however. The ambiance is golf clubesque, people were dressed in a range of dressed up.

I really wanted to like this place, I read the reviews and mostly they're very good. It was a special night and my wife and I went to celebrate. We arrived early so we had a drink at the bar, excellent drink. There was a lady beside me who had ordered the surf and turf and it looked awesome. So I felt that would be my meal. My wife had the tuna tartare and I had thick bacon to start. I blame myself for asking for it "a little" crispy. Her tartare was actually poke and not tartare and my bacon was well overcooked. For our mains she ordered duck breast (medium) and I ordered surf and turf (medium rare). I guess they had some issues with the meals as they brought us a bowl of lobster bisque each because it was taking so long. The bisque was delicious. When the meals came we were both disappointed. Hers was bland and was very light in the cherry sauce and her potatoes were substandard at best. My meal was not 2 3oz filets and a 6 oz lobster tail but more of 1 4 or 5 oz filet and a 4 oz lobster tail, (see pics). My potatoes were good. I could have forgiven this but the steak had a very strong chemical taste, like when you grill on charcoal and use fluid but put meat on too soon. Perhaps they used a butane torch to sear my steak? I don't know but I do know it wasn't anywhere near the best steak in town. Desert was very good. The only reason this is a 3 star and not less is the staff. They were excellent. The place itself is a nice place and comfortable seating and you didn't have to speak loud to be heard. I can understand why some give this place high marks because the lady's meal looked awesome, just like a picture they'd use to advertise. Mine wasn't good, lobster was about 1/2 the size of hers. The GM, a very nice lady, bragged this was the best steak house around but I've been to Flemings, The Keg, and others and this didn't come close to the level of expectation you have for a $100 steak.

From service to food, this is definitely a 5 star experience! Nicole was an excellent bartender with great dinner recommendations. Craft cocktails from their menu are the way to start the evening. The scallops appetizer paired with their thick cut bacon was decadent. All of their steaks are Prime - I haven't seen this anywhere in Tucson. NY Strip was delicious along with the accompaniments - carrots and potatoes. Crème brûlée for dessert was the perfect way to end the evening. Tom was the manager and his hospitality was first class. I can't wait to come back!

LOVE coming to Bob's for special occasions! We celebrated my husband's 40th with our best friends and the food, service, and ambiance was spectacular. We shared the crab cakes to start and then led into salads. Everyone loved their ribeye and filet steaks and the carrot is always a plus. They treated us to carrot cake and it was unmatched! Highly recommend for special occasions or a romantic dining experience.

    Prime Ribeye and Bob's carrot

Absolutely flawless dinner. Do not skip this restaurant! I got the Prime Ribeye and it was the best steak I've had in the last ten years. Mom got the rack of lamb, cut lollipop style, and she said it was the best in her life. My wife got the halibut special, Oscar-style, and it was "fabulous, wonderful, and killer." No problem eating gluten free, just skip the gravy on the steak. The cream spinach and the cream corn are both gluten-free. Mom got the Upshot white wine, which she was thrilled with. Very balanced. Dinner was the same price as a meal at Flemings in the Bay Area, and we considered this meal superior to both Flemings and Mastro's. Don't miss the pickled cucumber and peppers in the middle of the table when you sit down. Great fun! Service was also excellent and the room allowed easy conversations. Reservations are a must!

Do they have a dress code?

It's recommended to where nicer attire at Bob's, but it isn't required, to my knowledge.

Their menu sounds fantastic; can anyone elaborate on the pricing? The menu appears devoid of any pricing.

Price is higher end but worth every cent! :)

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and we were greeted right away by a friendly server who helped us get settled. My husband was starving, so we placed our order as soon as we sat down, and the food arrived within 15-20 minutes. The service throughout the evening was outstanding. Our water glasses were kept full, and our server checked on us regularly without being intrusive. We started with the smoked beets, which were absolutely incredible. I'll honestly be thinking about that dish for days! We also ordered the seafood platter with shrimp, crab claws, oysters, and three slices of sashimi. Everything on the platter was fresh and beautifully prepared. The oysters and sashimi were rich, creamy, buttery, and absolutely delicious. The steak frites was another standout. I was pleasantly surprised to see it featured picanha steak. It was packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and incredibly tender. Overall, we had a fantastic dining experience with great food, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere. We can't wait to come back!

The most perfectly medium-rare steak with so much flavor along with the perfectly crisp French fries. The baby bleu shallot sauce was just okay. The taste of fat was stronger than the other ingredients. But the fries were so beautifully cooked that you honestly don't need any sauce at all. Just enjoy their tallow fried goodness! Customer service was okay. Our order was handled quickly but our friend who placed the order felt uncomfortable in the space. Some of the young staff members were repeating her name and then would laugh and she felt a bit self-conscious because of it. There were also a lot of people in the food prep area laughing and hanging out, which didn't feel super clean. But, due to the fantastic quality of the food, we will definitely be back and look forward to hopefully have an even better overall experience

The young gentleman who waited on us (Avi) was outstanding - capably answering all of our menu and origin story questions. All beef comes from a grass-fed ranch in Montana (Meijer) and is butchered several times a week, on premises by the owner or head chef (prep room behind the dining areas). We were both eyeing the Carne Asada for which they use a skirt steak that is tenderized by pounding rather than marinating (as is more commonly done for tacos/fajitas). Being hammered is definitely the better path when served as steak. Since we always share, she got the Asada ($39) with the "surf/turf" option which added 4 grilled shrimp (+$15) and I got the 8oz Filet ($49). We also split an app: the Cast Iron Mushrooms (caps filled with beef chorizo and cheese) $14 and they were tender and delicious! For drinks she got the Tucson Old Fashioned (made with local Whisky del Bac) $16 and I tried the "Mexico to Milan" - a Negroni made with Mezcal instead of gin $15. Both were outstanding - strong, flavorful, and not too sweet. Steaks arrived about 20 minutes after initial ordering (just right, not rushed) and were each cooked as ordered (medium). Note: steaks come plain - that is generally no sides or sauces. Avi had politely urged the mushroom mixta ($10) but I had (regretfully) passed. The fillet was solid/good, with a decent char, well salted, and pink through the middle. However, the Carne Asada stole the show, and it wasn't even close. That tenderized skirt steak, unadorned with interfering marinades, just exploded with rich beef flavor. The shrimp were merely "ok" especially at $15 and we would definitely skip next time in favor of another appetizer. We both worked much of this beautiful Saturday and even coincidentally missed our lunches, so dessert was a no brainer... as was the lava cake. Avi concurred, literally jumping with enthusiasm and adding that was his favorite and we would not regret it. She's normally not a huge sweets person (I am!) yet she also marveled at all of the flavors, textures (and temperatures) of this concoction. Final notes: the bill total will be after-tax which means you're calculating your tip with the tax included in the total, a pet peeve, but it appears to be the way all 'merican restaurants are trending now. We also noticed that with respect to the Carne Asada entree, compared to photos just a year ago, portion sizes appear to have shrunk a bit (20 percent?) while cost went up ($35-$39). Parking will be a challenge but there is a garage only 2 blocks away. Or, opt as we did, and make it a "downtown/4th Ave evening" and trolly your way here. There's a stop directly in front!

I tried to make reservations at another restaurant beforehand known for their prime rib, but they were booked full. So I reserved this place. Upon our arrival we entered the door on the right hand side of the building. We told them the name our reservation was under and they said it was for the restaurant next door on the left side of the building. It was for the more upscale restaurant as mentioned by the host. They have two restaurants by the same name that sit opposite of each other. I hear their counterpart is just as good. We entered the building from the left and told the host the name the reservation was under. The host wasn't as attentive as she should have been. She hardly even looked as us. We were standing there and she seemed to be busy with something else. No ' it'll be just a few minutes', nothing. She was talking with the other ladies. Finally we were seated. Our server was very nice. We decided on two steak dinners. My wife had the 8oz filet and I got the rib-eye both med-rare. Our steaks look good when we received it. But my steak was served rare! It was chewy and fatty. I chewed for days just to get a single piece down. My wife steak was overcooked to medium. There's nothing worse than an overcooked filet mignon! We don't like sending food back for obvious reasons. We've heard too many horror stories, not to mention I use to work in the food industry. As I mentioned, our server was very nice and attentive as well! She constantly checked on us and my tip reflected that! For a $170.00 bill, our meal was mediocre at best. Thanks for ending my wife's Mother's Day on a sour note!

The first thing I need to own is that it's a shame I hadn't visited here before. We arrived at 5:30p and both the bar and patio areas were packed - standing room only, and no wonder. They have one of the better happy hours (daily! 3:00 - 6:30p) - able to accommodate both the slacker and the over-timer Lol. Basic drinks are all discounted such as house wines, well drinks, and beers. Their bottled wines and craft cocktails are all exempt though. Many of their appetizers are also discounted and some quite substantially. We grabbed a glass of the house cabernet ($6, normally $8) and the grilled shrimp wrapped in jalapeno bacon ($13, normally $20). NOTE: happy hour pricing is Only available if you order/consume at the bar or on the patio and that's clear in advance, and understandable. The dining areas were only half full at this early point (but filled up by 6:30) and the host kindly encouraged us to enjoy our starters at the bar as she would hold our table. We were then sat near the "back" of this long venue and frankly, aside from the lone windowed table at the very front, this would be my preferred seating - cozy, intimate, with only five other tables around us. For dinner drinks she got an Italian Nebbiolo Bricco Magno Red Blend ($13/glass, reliably terrific/mellow) and I got the Chupacabra ($15) Mezcal/prickly pear cocktail, strong and excellent as well. We got an additional appetizer: the roasted bone marrow ($19). I had never had marrow before but she raved about how good this can be if done properly (bonus, it is super healthy). Folks, a picture/worth a 1000... suffice to say this was simply outstanding! We both had long work weeks and were craving meat - just a damn good steak. Our waiter, without blinking recommended the 8oz bison filet mignon ($65) as his absolute menu fav, and then the day's special: 14oz ribeye ($50). We ordered each. All dinners come with two sides and we each got the day's special: roasted half artichoke and she got the loaded baked potato while I got the mashed potatoes. Food arrived about 15 minutes later at good temperature (warm/rested with a strong char) with each being accurately grilled (medium and medium-rare). Taste was outstanding. Neither one of us had bison filet before and marveled how it (subtly) added a "wild" edge to an always outstanding, lean-but-tender, cut of beef. The loaded baked was terrific, however, the mashed was the only disappointment... a plainer mash one could not make themselves - pure white and borderline dry, no milk, butter, egg, gravy(?), nothing to make it creamy or add any flavor dimension - a surprise frankly. The only other "critique" is that the dessert menu could add some kind of dark/chocolate concoction. All in all, though, we loved our experience and have decided to add this to our periodic special dinners rotation! Staff was outstanding - just the proper balance of attentive and quiet - and waters never went below half empty. Parking is free and plentiful, especially behind the restaurant (and yes, if you continue on around the back there is another long entrance/exit driveway that comes out the other side of Jimmy John's and Noodleholics.

I understand the head chef has a French influence, but frankly it overwhelms the food and takes away from the freshness. I had the snapper since they didn't have the halibut. It seemed over cooked and then drenched in sauce with greens on top, also drenched in sauce. The saddest part was they sat us in the back room. Where they seemed to sit everyone coming into the restaurant. If the restaurant was packed I would understand but every other room was empty. Who wants to sit along the pathway to the bathroom? Service was so/so. Had to ask for drinks multiple times. But frankly the quality of the food was not worth the cost. Definitely will not be returning, until they revamp the menu to include less French style and more uniquely inspired fresh food. I mean if we wanted French we would have gone to Le Rendezvous or Wild Garlic which are top notch.

It's right next to the University of Arizona on university and I loved it so much, I came back three nights in a row. Call me a creature of habit, but when you're out of town and you find something excellent, it's worth going back. It definitely has more of a bar vibe than it does a restaurant, but the food I ordered was incredible. If you're hungry, don't look at my pictures. Lol. With that area of town being so crowded, I thought parking was going to be an issue, but I found a spot right near the front of the restaurant every time. I walked right in, ordered at the bar, and was in and out in less than 12 minutes every time. On top of it all, I had the same person helping me from behind the bar each time and she was incredible. Friendly, accommodating, and if I was the manager, she'd be getting a raise. Ask for Alyssa and you won't be disappointed. Needless to say, anytime I am in Tucson, Arizona, I no longer have to search for a restaurant that I like. I'll definitely be back. PS - When they saw me come in for the third night in a row, the chef blessed me with a free slice of raspberry pie. That's quality customer service right there. Love this place.

I ordered a Mango Cart beer on draft w/ Tajín and the pineapple pork tenderloin. The beer is my favorite so I knew what to expect there but the tenderloin was so well cooked and prepared. I was honestly shocked. It's not a dive bar by any means but I wasn't expecting the food to be so top notch. I ended up paying $20 for my meal but would have easily paid up to $30 at a different restaurant and it would have came out not being anywhere near as good as this!
