I see a lot of potential in this new mini hot pot concept....the cute little hot pot, the tasty broths, the blue sterno flame dancing around. It could really hit the spot on a cold night when Heat Shabu is packed or if you don't have time for the full 2 hour AYCE shabu dinner. I'd recommend the kimchi and tonkatsu broths, since I found them both very tasty with a nice spicy heat. They have a good selection of Asian drink favorites like milk teas and special fruity teas. The waiting staff had awesome attitudes and kept their composure with a constant smile even through all the hiccups of the evening. My friends and I were driving back home from our Lake Tahoe trip and started to crave something hot and yummy to warm us up from all the time we spent out in the snow. We found this spot and were amazed with all the different flavors they had for their hot pot. The place itself isvictor. The decorations really help create a comfy/cozy atmosphere. The music playlist they have is great. Everything from today's pop to old school r&b. They also have a great selection of drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I chose the Sesame Tonkatsu. I felt like something was missing, but it still was super creamy. I loved the enoki mushrooms and the slices of tteokbokki? I think that's what it's called. This place was so cool! We stopped here before going to a concert at the Golden1 Center, and we decided we wanted hotpot! Hotpot is a type of Taiwanese cuisine where it's fondue where you cook meats and veggies in your choice of broth. Inside is really aesthetically hip and there's plenty of seating. They have a cute wall with polaroids hung all over it. They also have cute seating and decor. I'm super impressed at their menu and the amount of ingredients included in each selection. I ordered from their winter menu, the sesame tonkotsu which included pork belly, quail egg, lobster ball, fishball, crab, mushroom, mussels, cabbage, rice cake, tofu, corn, and udon. Wow is that a lot! For a cheap price of $14 we got a large heaping bowl full of ingredients. I got full very quickly so I was able to take home a lot after. Came to see what all the fuss was about. There surprisingly wasn't a wait coming in at 9pm. The staff was prompt, friendly, and extremely helpful when figuring out what were some good options to order. The menu is laid out like any typical hot pot restaurant, with milk tea, ice cream, snacks, and waffles as added bonuses. There's not many options to choose from and add ons were pretty pricey compared to ramen shops and pho restaurants in the area. I chose the kim chi bowl because why not? & their matcha milk tea is probably one of the best I've had. Would I pay $4 for that small amount of milk tea again? Probably not. If you're allergic to shrimp like I am, you have the option to tell them to not cook the food with any of it or substitute. I've been to restaurants where it wasn't an option to completely remove the seafood because everything is cooked together. Boiling Crab, I'm looking at you with a salty taste in my mouth. I mean, I order a pound of mussels and they tell me shrimp will be cooked with it so I have no choice other than to accidentally chew on a shrimp head. But I digress, this isn't Boiling Crab or Shoki but rather it's distant cousin that comes to family reunions to humbly brag about what he's accomplished. And I appreciate you, distant cousin. I was starving, so we ordered a variety of appetizers to start- salt & pepper chicken wings, fried calamari, and gyoza. The wings were ok, but nothing special. The calamari was salty. I felt like I needed rice with it. I liked the gyoza out of the three because it came with a flavorful dipping sauce. I ordered the house special. I think I made the wrong choice, because I don't like to eat quite a few things in there (taro, lotus root, bamboo). I can be picky. There was an overabundance of Napa cabbage and barely any noodles. The spam was super salty, because I ran out of noodles when eating it. I guess I should've added more noodle- udon or instant noodle is preferable. I'm reluctant to leave a review because this place is always so busy now that we sometimes end up dining elsewhere as a result, but this has been a long time favorite spot for my hubby and I. We started going to Boiling Avenue when they had their soft open back in 2015. At the time, we had only been in Sac for a year and had just returned from our honeymoon. I love shabu shabu, jeongol, and basically any and all hotpot style dishes, so this was a must for me. Our first order there was the house special, popcorn chicken, and shrimp skewers with Thai tea (boba added). To this day, we still order the popcorn chicken, shrimp skewers, and Thai tea. The items have slightly changed. (No more fried basil in the popcorn chicken (yes, Boiling Ave, we've noticed). No more shallots on the shrimp skewers--we'd always put some of that topping in our hot pots. No more self-serve dipping sauce, which is the saddest part.) Also, instead of the house special, we now order the Sichuan spicy. We love this place so much that we've kept returning and brought all of our family members to eat here at least once. They also used to do really cute events and celebrated their business anniversary by doing promotions, but they've gotten so popular that I don't really see those anymore. Still remember getting free cake, which was great as we usually go back during our anniversary as a sort of ritual. Despite the changes, still love this place. The only downside is when it's so packed and there's a long wait. The funny part is that we used to go to Blue House and then go to Boiling Ave when Blue House was packed. I think the broth and sauces are better at boiling point. However, for the Sacramento area this place is good!! So kudos to them for allowing us to sub :) My pot consists of crab, shrimps, clam, lobster fishballs, lotus roots, enoki mushrooms, tomatoes, tofu, corn, konnyaku (potato noodles), cilantro, green onions and vermicelli noodles. Add ons are priced as: $1-$2 = veggies, tofu, noodles, fried tempura $2.50-$3 = fishballs, some seafood, spam, imitation crab sticks $3.75 = main seafood $4.25 = sliced meat The interior design looks super hipster! Huge Portions! HOT HOT HOT Spice levels -- I'm still recovery from a level 3 (middle of the Scoville scale on the menu). It's a tiny spot in a strip mall in the "mall district" of Sacromento. We were a large party and took over a good portion of the place. They handle our group coming in in dribble and draps very well. Never once did I feel rushed or in their way. In all fairness they had every right to rush our through on a busy Friday night but they DID NOT! I ordered the Kimchi Pot with 'instant noodle'. Not a great experience at all, the food was okay. The way it was set up was just terrible, too many ingredients in a small bowl, so you had to take some out so that the meat could cook and the broth wouldn't spill. Other places I had been to had a good balance and had left a lot of room for the dish, but here, the soup was at the rim and getting it to boil risked a spill. An inconvenience on the server and customer is having to ask the server to turn the fire off as well. I guess it has to do with safety but I think as a server, I would consider how things were made and served that I would know to turn the fires off because the bowls were too small and our bowls already started to drip off the edge. We came in around 5:30 on a Wednesday , it wasn't as packed so we were seated right away. The waiter was very informative since it was our first time there. The menu can be a bit confusing because we weren't sure how many people does each hotpot serve so the waiter told us how it works you can add additional items and the broth is a refill, ask for non spice mild or spicy. We ordered one hotpot #1 added 1 rice, and 2 vermicelli , extra meat and it was more than enough for the 4 of us two adults and two kids so we order a bunch of appetizers, cucumber salad was amazing. Calamari and pot sticker was good but nothing special and the salt and pepper tofu which we didn't care for too much , it tasted plain so we dipped it with the sauce they had on the side which made it better. I've been to this hot pot numerous times. The first few times were great. The last 3 times have been disappointing. Tonight's service is what actually prompted a review. My boyfriend, son and I came in and were seated immediately. We sat there for 15-20 mins while the waitresses were off assisting other customers (which I understand) it wasn't until the next 2 customers that came in after us, were able to order and received utensils. I flagged one of the waitresses and asked if we could order and she put her finger up... as she stared at the large party walking through the door. Before she could finish her sentence I said, "we've been waiting for 20 mins and 2 other parties that walked in after us were able to order" she look flustered. I've been if-y about returning to this place prior to our last visit. Came here for a really late night snack. We ordered the Sichuan pot to share between 2 people and got a passionfruit greentea. The pot included some clams, spam, ramen noodles, beef, some fish cake, a fish ball with tobiko inside and some other toppings. It comes out warm, but the things inside aren't fully cooked yet so you have to wait for it to boil. The Sichuan was a medium spice, but since I don't do spicy, it was a lot for me. Actually it was so much for my stomach to handle that I actually ended up throwing up at home lol. Okay, TMI. The pot was flavorful, soup was yummy. Guess I shouldn't have had too much. It's awesome that there is a place like Boiling Avenue in Sacramento. This restaurant is a hip hot pot place that serves up piping hot Asian food with some pretty sweet service. I'm glad I got the chance to partake in the food here as it is certainly a fresh take on traditional hot pot. When I think of hot pot I usually think of a dingy restaurant and a big communal pot for people to share. Boiling Avenue is not this. It has a very modern and new feel to the decor and the hot pots are all individual! Very sweet. The menu offers a few choices for you, but if you can't find exactly what you want you can easily swap things out. Our server was very patient and willing to help us get exactly what we wanted to order. The hot pots kept the food piping hot... as did the spice level! Their spice/hot levels are legit here, so just be warned that they are not joking when they say something is spicy hot! The boba drinks are also great here. After choosing a menu item, a waitress will bring you a giant bowl of broth filled with a dozen different ingredients, and good them right in front of you! The most enjoyable thing is to pick and choose which ingredients you want to mix together in one bite. This used to be my favorite restaurant until what happened on my birthday. It was THE WORST service ever. It started off with one of the hotpot orders being served incorrectly. When we tried to get the rice and noodles that they forgot (they also didn't take out the items that were subbed out, didn't matter so my brother started eating it anyways) they took the entire bowl and brought out the correct bowl with his order of rice and noodles. I subbed a few things out of my bowl and they tried to serve it with the pork that I subbed out. For reference, I wear hijab and don't eat pork and ordered seafood and vegetables in my hotpot. Rather than making a new bowl, they simply removed the pork from the top and tried to serve it to me again. (I could tell because the noodles were red from the meat). When I asked them if they just took off the meat, they said yes. (What would have happened if they did that to something I had an allergy to???) Then I told them I couldn't eat it because it had the pork in it, they decided to remake it entirely. When they brought it back out, it had some missing items that I didn't remove. I tried to flag them down for 5 minutes to notify them and when they kept ignoring me, I was forced to raise my voice to say "Excuse me". When I asked for them, they brought me one piece when typically it comes with 2 of each. Next, we asked for sauces for an entire table of 7 people and they only brought one little bowl of each of the 3 sauces for all of us to share. We didn't bother asking for more because by this time, we requested a fork 4 times. After the 4th time, my brother walked up to the counter to get one. For reference, it was a Saturday night and typically it's more busy but that night it wasn't. There were a number of tables empty throughout our entire visit and there wasn't a wait-list. We got a very negative vibe from the servers and made the experience very unpleasant. I'm extremely disappointed with this place and will most likely not be returning after being a loyal customer since 2015. Hot pot is the one thing I constantly crave. So much so that I have actually bought myself a personal hot pot so I can make it at home. That being said, I often go out because gathering materials to do it at home is a little tedious. I've tried a lot of the hot pot/shabu places in this area and stopped by this place a few nights ago. We walked in on a Monday night and it was decently crowded around 8pm. We were seated in about 5 minutes. It took our waitress a long time to get to taking our order but she was super sweet. Here, you order a certain hot pot and can switch out up to 3 items. I love that because I always feel bad leaving that one thing that you inevitably will not like in the order. I ordered the lamb hot pot and made my substitutions. The meat will come uncooked inside the dish, so make sure you sit there and wait for a while before starting to chow down. I recommend pushing the meat into the bottom of the pot with the opposite end of your chopsticks just to avoid ingesting raw meat germs. The flavors were well done, and the ingredients were fresh. Although I did thoroughly enjoy this meal on a cold and rainy day, I had some issues with the restaurant that made me feel they could work on some things. First, they definitely need more servers. We waited about 20 minutes for our food and we waited about 10 minutes for our waitress to even come to our table, even though we had already chosen what to order before sitting down. Other tables were served far more quickly than we were, which left us very frustrated. Also, one of my biggest pet peeves of restaurants is when they leave the core of cabbage or lettuce in their food. AGHHHHH. Taking time to core it out so you dont serve a block of hard cabbage to a customer is highly worth the work. Definitely distinguishes good restaurants that care about food from those just interested in making money. In general, the food is very tasty and there's been only been once or twice where it was a miss. I never dine in and only order takeout so I can only rate the quality of the food. As far as service goes, the employees are pretty nice and usually prompt (besides one night that I visited last week and I was waiting at least 20 mins to pick up my order because the restaurant was at max capacity). The orders are accurate so I can't complain. The ingredients/food items are arranged neatly in their own container, separated from the soup, so that it's easy to heat up at home. I think the soju is a little overpriced for the amount given and doesn't taste too different from flavored bottled soju so I probably won't be trying that again. I love the braised pork belly but this is the hit or miss item I mentioned. Once or twice that I've ordered it, it tasted like there were tiny pieces of star anise within the food. Imagine you're chewing meat that's deliciously tender and melting in your mouth but for every bite or so, your teeth sinks into a solid texture that's bitter. Yuck. I had to pick out the pieces as if there were bones in my food. In general, I don't have that issue thankfully but it definitely is annoying when it had happened. When it comes to the hotpot, I like them spicy so I like the seafood one. I believe the sesame tonkatsu is popular with customers so I gave that a try. I love that the restaurant provides separate spicy sauce without me having to ask, so it made the sesame tonkatsu more flavorful for my taste buds. The only con I could see with this place (besides the rare inconsistent preparation of food) would be that the restaurant is small and can get quite busy. Some customers are not so kind and do not consider this when they visit on busy nights like weekends. I'd recommend calling them for a reservation or check on the wait times instead of showing up and being rude to them because there's a 1+ hour wait. Or like me, ordering takeout through their website. The restaurant is about as small as a Starbucks location, in my opinion, and average size of parties tend to be at least 4-10 people per table. They have some seats outside but they can get packed easily. This is just from what I've witnessed during my several visits. It was dead empty during the lockdown but once dining areas opened up again, this is one of those places that can become super busy. read more

They have a variety of different soup with different fillings. Most places don't let you substitute, but not here, you get to substitute three items you do not want for what you would like instead. Which is pretty awesome, given how picky I am. My favorite go to pot is the beef tomato. They have happy hour. I try to come during happy hour to take advantage of the deal. I love the cute idea of my own personal hotpot. This has potential to be thriving if they fixed a couple of things. Service was great. Though our server only checked up on us twice, she dealt with my indecisive family, explained the menu for us, and grabbed everything we requested. We got our hotspots before our utensils, so the flame died down before I could enjoy. My boba drink was wrong, but she gladly fixed it because the bar made the wrong item. I had reservations and came early, and they were very accommodating to let us sit in advance. Food wise, I'm a little disappointed that most of their pots come with vermicelli noodles aka glass noodles. My boyfriend had to substitute the noodles for udon noodles, and when we got it on the side, it was literally five strands. For 1.50 extra that was a rip off. From all the pictures I thought I was going to receive a ginormous hotpot but when I saw it in person it was so tiny. However, it was enough to feed me, so I'm not going to complain. Just want to give everyone else heads up that looks can be deceiving. They also give you three sauces on the side so you can tweak up the broth. I ordered the kimchi hotpot and it came with ramen noodle and an abundance of seafood. That was definitely a plus. However, my ramen noodles didn't get to cook fully before the flame went out. Had to let it sit for a bit. Water is self served which is good because we need to conserve. Maybe if this place let me customize my own hotpot I would love to come back!
