3.6 stars overall. Lets get right to the nitty gritty... The salmon ball I had very high hopes for. Main ingredients were *i thought* avocado and salmon and had sushi like similarities, or so I assumed after asking the server and reading the menu. I have a very intimate relationship with avocado. If I don't have some at least every few days I go into withdrawal. It turned out to be in fact a ball/dome shape, that part was accurate. But maybe I misread the description cuz I didn't taste much avocado at all. I did taste the cold bits of imitation crab stringys, and cucumber. And the annoying sweet sauce. The salmon was cooked and warm on the outside. So thats why it caught me off guard cuz it was coldness inside. And it was wayyyy tooo sweet. It just had way too many conflicting and not complimenting flavors. I wanted to leave half of it at the table to toss, but Hubby kept insisting we take it home. * 3/5 stars. * The kim chee was so distasteful I took 1 bite and didn't eat it anymore after that. I just don't understand how someone can mess up kimchee at a Korean restaurant. Kimchee is standard flagship Korean food and isn't Bonchon a Korean restaurant? And the word "bonchon" I think it means the little side dishes that generally come with meals such as kimchee?! Its likened to a Filipino ruining rice, or Mexicans messing up pinto beans or a French person ruining French Fries. I just don't get it. *1/5 star. * The salad was good, thankfully. And the dressing was tasty, hopefully it was homemade. I see Costco spring mix written all over the different colored leaves, which is fine cuz their spring mix at Costco is organic anyway. Not much ingenuity or creativity with the salad, but that's okay cuz it tasted good. *4/5 stars.* The soy garlic chicken wings had an amazing crunch and this was by far the best part of the meal even though we had requested it double dipped in the sauce and it made it way too salty. Even though I was wiping the sauce away [our fault], the chicken had a kind of crunch that I have never had in a piece of fried chicken before. I was so impressed. Best crunch EVER. And it came with one of the best pickled daikon ever. I would probably come back just for the wings and wings alone. And maybe the salad. Food wise, you are 2 for 4 so far Bonchon, get widdit! 4.5/5 stars. Despite the ups and downs of the food, the cheery face and positive vibes of the server was nice to have around. Not gonna lie, I was kinda hesitant trying Bonchon because I thought my food snobbiness would kick into full gear as I've had chimaek (Korean fried chicken + beer; godly combo btw) in Hongdae, but you know what? I kinda actually dig this place. Yeah, there are still some cons here. Strongly recommend getting the wings as the drumsticks were a little on the dry side. Also take caution if ordering take-out because although I arrived 30 min after receiving the notification stating that my order was ready, the fries that I got were legit cold lol. The beauty of KFC (Korean fried chicken) is that it retains its crispiness for a long time so it was still pretty good when I had it (though they forgot to give me my pickled radish side dish, sadface). The crispiness and intense flavor of the chicken definitely took me back to the time when I visited Seoul. I mean don't get me wrong, the one here isn't as great as the one in Korea lol but the one here was still very enjoyable to eat. I tried the soy garlic and spicy flavors. As a spice fanatic (and arguably a masochist), the spicy version was definitely my favorite (it's not stupidly-spicy like atomic Wingstop wings, but it's definitely not for people who can't take mild spice either). The soy garlic flavor was pretty good, and I'd say it's a great choice for those who can't quite tolerate heat. (The spicy and soy garlic wings/drumsticks look very similar to each other, so you could do like a wing roulette kind of thing if you wanted to haha just a side note.....) I also got the seasoned fries. Recommended for those who love love love parmesan (the flavor was a bit too rich for me and eating it also with the KFC, it was a bit of an overload). Definitely give Bonchon a try if you've never had Korean fried chicken (pair it with some beer for a chimaek experience!). The chicken has a notable sweetness to it compared to its American counterpart (it's not candy-sweet, but once you take your first bite, you'll definitely notice that there's some sugar, but it's balanced with garlic-y saltiness.....really hard to explain it in words lol just go try it!!). Even prior to Bonchon's opening in Elk Grove, I was a fan. I had tried the location in Sunnyvale and had high hopes for the same level of food quality and service. I was not disappointed. I always recommend getting the fried chicken. Yes, there are a number of other dishes to order, but the best thing here is the chicken! I personally stick to their wings, which come with a mix of wings and drumettes. Of the two flavors, soy garlic is my favorite, maintaining it's slightly sweet and savory flavor while still crisp and delicious. If you like a saltier taste, you can ask for your chicken to be double glazed. Sometimes I'll venture to do half and half (half soy garlic and half spicy), but the spicy packs a pretty big punch, and even with bites of pickled radish and sips of water, I find myself taking sharp little inhales to try to quench the heat. Among the other menu items I've tried, the only ones I have an interest to re-order are the salmon avocado ball appetizer (yum) and maybe the seasoned fries to share. Everything else is pretty meh in my opinion and a little too pricey for what you get. But going for the chicken alone is worth it! If you're going with multiple people, order a Large for the table to share rather than ordering individual Smalls to cut costs. Aside from the food, the service is always pleasant and the location is open and clean. All in all, Bonchon is a frequent contender in discussions of "where should we go for dinner" and always wins out when we're craving some fried chicken. read more

My family ordered Bonchon from here pretty often for dinner. Usually we order the tacos, fried rice, 1/2 soy and 1/2 spicy chicken. The fried rice is okay, looks soggy half the time. I feel that the consistency on the wings is not there. Sometimes the spicy wings are perfect and other times they're EXTREMELY spicy. The service on the other hand is great. My girlfriend ordered takoyaki and the sweet crunch strips to go. Received the delivery 10 mins after it was given to the driver. We open and see that the takoyaki was burnt and the chicken does not look fresh at all. The takoyaki white sauce is just regular mayo (mayo you buy from the store and put on your sandwich), which is usually not the case in other places and where I work where the sauce had a more sweet and smooth flavor to it. The strips tasted like it was microwaved. Very disappointed and will not be ordering here again. I've heard many great things about Bonchon and had to seize the opportunity to try them out while passing through the neighborhood in Elk Grove. Upon pulling up to the store front and parking, there had to be at least 6 parties move in and out of the door in that short amount of time it took me to park. This place was super busy and seemed to be very popular as those coming out of the restaurant were carrying bags full of food. We were a party of two and, although it seemed like a long line had formed once we stepped through the door, we were promptly greeted asking if we were going to be taking out or dining in. My husband and I decided to dine in. For a place specializing in chicken wings, they had a pretty substantial list of items on their menu. Our order consisted of a small order of wings (half & half order of the Soy Garlic and Sweet Crunch), Seasoned Fries, the Pork Buns, and a side order of Bulgogi to toss on top of our fries. The bulgogi was the least memorable from the meal and we easily could have done without it. I personally liked the Pork Buns and thought they were very good. My husband did not enjoy them as much because he felt they were saturated in too much mayo (probably from the slaw). I guess it would depend on personal preference. The Seasoned Fries were excellent. Each fry had the perfect crisp and was tossed generously in parmesan cheese to add a flavorful crunch with each bite. The portion of fries was also huge and could be shared among multiple people. The obvious show stealer of the meal were the wings. OMG so amazing! Each wing was perfectly cripsy, without any unneeded breading, and every piece was perfectly glazed (again, without sacrificing any crispiness). Wings were moist and tender. We did not have a preference between the two flavors, although our server did make it a point to mention to us that the Sweet Crunch flavor was new and told us the mix of the glaze. It almost seemed as if he was trying to deter us away from ordering it. The good thing is that we loved both! We had major regrets we didn't order the medium quantity of wings so we could have tried the spicy flavor. Service was friendly, attentive, and prompt. Although they were busy, our server checked in on us multiple times and fulfilled all of our requests quickly. More so, despite the busyness at the time we came in, the kitchen crew got our orders out super fast. We barely had any wait time for our food. Living almost an hour and a half away from Elk Grove, we were happy to see that there are other Bonchon locations closer to us. Put in a take out order at 8:40 pm. Was told it would be 15 minutes. Arrived at 9 pm to pick up. Went to the front and asked to pick up my food and the lady up front said she didn't see it. A few minutes later, she and the other employee found my order that was taken untouched, and still stuck onto the order pad- 20 minutes after I had placed the phone call. They then finally put in my order to the kitchen and I waited a total of 40 minutes for a $13 order due to the carelessness of the workers who forgot to submit my order to the kitchen. Can walk in for To go orders and eat in orders, and service was great. The drumstick package was 15 for about $34 before tax, which sounds sort of pricey but it was tasty and very filling - so worth it. Overall thoughts of this restaurant: LACK OF CONSISTENCY. First experience here was beyond amazing. It was a to-go order and the wings had the perfect crunch and every bite blasted with flavor. The sauce was sweet and I was literally licking the bones because it was that. amazingly. good. Two orders after, what the hell am I eating? The spicy flavor is pretty spicy and can almost be numbing, but I like the flavor. My friend personally didn't like the soy garlic flavor that much, even though that's their most popular flavor. Also I was sad that they only had two flavors for the wings, the other flavor being spicy. My friend tried the spicy wings before and even though he loves spicy food he said those spicy wings were a bit too spicy for him. What is interesting is that you can order drums or wings or both. First time coming here for lunch and it wasn't a bad idea. They have a lunch menu with has pretty decent pricing for the good and the portion size is pretty much the same size. We ordered the yummy in the tummy soy garlic chicken wings, the tasty fried shrimp sui mai, the soy garlic potstickers (could've skipped that), the tekkobKi (my first time trying and it was ok, I liked the rice roll thing but not a fan on the glass noodle, it was a bit soggy) Korean tacos with bulgogi (could've skipped that also, Tacos are just best during taco Tuesday at my favorite Mexican joint), Jap Chae (today the dish wasn't on point, it tasted and looked a tad overlooked). You can choose an option of kimchi coleslaw, pickled radish, fries or steamed rice for a total of $8.95. The wings were still wonderfully chewy and crispy despite out ordering to go. Bonchon has the most amazing Korean fried chicken! We also love their Pork Buns. They have the yummiest pork belly that is so tender and wrapped in a little dough "taco" with pickle and coleslaw. It's really the perfect 2-bite appetizer. My daughter loves their Bullgogi, but I find the meat a little dry, fatty and overcooked.
