BonChon needs a location in SoCal ASAP! We were all starving after the 2.5hr Winchester House tour, so my friend suggested we come here because he saw it on a list for the best wings in the US. We were not disappointed. It's a small establishment tucked into the corner of a plaza and it was busy with the weekday lunch rush, but we still snagged a table for 3 immediately. We ordered the 16pc mix/match chicken wings/drums with both spices/sauces. For sides we had kimchi coleslaw, two orders of white rice, and an order of spicy garlic potstickers. It was the perfect amount of food for two grown men and one petite woman. The marinade on the chicken wasn't overwhelming, with just the right amount of kick, and I've never had jucier pieces of chicken in my life. For all of the food it was $30, which I think is a steal! I heard about Bon Chon in the East Coast. To my surprise when I checked Yelp today, I found out that they had recently opened a West Coast location in Sunnyvale. My husband and I decided to give it a try today to see what the hype was all about. When we got there, there was plenty of seating in the small establishment. The waiter immediately seated us and took our order. What we got was a medium order of soy garlic chicken (10 pcs.) with a side of rice and an order of zucchini fries. It took a little while for us to get our food but we were fine with it since we were watching the world series on one of their many flat screens. Just like 99 chicken, we figured chicken isn't cooked till we order it. The zucchini fries came out first and it was delicious and addicting. They are so damn good that I wanted to order another one just for myself. Next came the chicken and side of rice. To my dissapointment, I thought the side of rice was really small. There were two of us so it wasn't enough. I don't like to compare Bon Chon to 99 Chicken but I really can't help it. I guess the reason why it was small to me was because at 99 Chicken, we get unimited rice and at Bon Chon, a side of rice is litterally a small side of rice just as you get a small side of mashed potatoes at KFC. As for the chicken, it was good. I like that it was light, crunchy, and had a little bit of sweet garlicky flavor to it. I had expected it to be soggy in soy sauce but I was totally wrong, but in my honest opinion it's not as juicy as 99 chicken's. Both my hubby and I were still a little hungry after our meal but decided not to order more since dinner could get expensive having to order more sides to go with more chicken. I love the chicken here. I guess it must be twice fried or something because the skin is so perfectly separated from the meat. I like Bon Chon Chicken better than 99 Chicken because it seems to be less greasy. I usually order the large, drums only non-spicy wings. The soy garlic glaze is delicious and drums are very tender and juicy. In addition, you must try the spicy fried dumplings, they are awesome! You get to choose 2 sides with your chicken and I usually go with the biscuits and slaw. My favorite fried chicken spot in the South Bay! What constitutes a good (asian) chicken wing to me? 1. Crispy but juicy on the inside 2. Flavorful but not too saucy 3. Not greasy (ew, Wing Stop!) Bon Chon meets all three of these requirements! FOOD - Spicy soy garlic is the BEST flavor here. It has a heavy kick so I wouldn't recommend it to non-spicy eaters. I've had the regular soy garlic and found it too bland for me. - I prefer the wings over the drums. The drums can be overkill but can be appealing to big eaters. I like my food mini. :) - The medium is usually perfect for 2. 10 wings with 1 side and radish is enough for us. Did I get mention it's only $10.99? - Kimchi coleslaw is meh. It's been a hit or mess for me. There usually isn't enough kimchi flavor in it and is more on the sweet side - Radish is refreshing to eat between the spicy wings - Skip the biscuit. At first I wasn't quite sure how I was going to rate this place. First off its not very convenient from where I live for how good the place is. Second of all it's odd that this place isn't open on Monday's and Tuesdays. The food was good, I had the soy garlic spicy chicken wings as for how the taste was, it was awesome and different at the same time. It had a very distinct original texture to it when biting into the chicken. It was different but in a good way. What was pretty disappointing was that there were only two flavors, not that it wasn't good, but being a chicken spot I would think you'd have other flavors, and that's what I usually go for when it comes to chicken (but like I said, the two flavors were good). I really liked the place and I don't mind coming back, but it being the only spot that's about 20 minutes away from my house just for chicken, I don't know if I'd drive down this way every time I'm craving for chicken. but when I'm in town, don't get me wrong I'll be looking forward to eating here. The bulgogi was near flavorless, and at $8.99 it is way expensive for the quality and flavor you get. Won't be ordering this again. The reason I ordered the bulgogi was that I didn't feel that the 6-piece chicken would be enough for my huge lunch appetite. When you combine the two dishes and a coke, it comes out to almost 20 bucks. If you have read my other reviews, it just burns me up to pay big money for food that just doesn't satisfy. I have no problem paying 300.00 to Alexanders for a Wagu steak, but I don't want to pay $10.00 for food that does not satisfy me. I'm sorry Bon Chon Chicken but I will not be coming back. Go with the spicy soy garlic - super YUMS! The chicken skin is crispy and packed with flavor. I prefer the wings over the drumsticks because there's a higher skin to meat ratio and therefore more spicy soy garlicky goodness with every bite. My mouth is salivating as I write this review....almost as if I'm re-living some kind of precious past memory. *drools* I also love that they serve beer and soju. It's a fun place to grab some wings and drinks with a group of friends, but since we all came up with that same bright idea, there usually is a decent wait for tables. FYI: Although it may seem much easier to just get it to-go and skip the wait, don't! The crispiness isn't the same if you don't eat it right away, even though they ventilate the to-go boxes. And any leftovers will DEFINITELY not taste the same the next day. You lose all that freshly glazed chicken wing flavor. Also, the servers are like complete night and day. There's usually only 2-3 people working front of the house. The guy that works there is super nice, always checking in, and he SMILES! Thank you for not acting like you're miserable! This review is only for carry out. We went to Bonchon two times in three days because it was just that good! We ordered the medium combo with half spicy and half soy garlic. The second time we ordered a large combo with the same flavors. The large ended up being too much food for the two of us. The chicken is well seasoned and crispy. The spicy flavor is sweet and tangy with a kick (would be too spicy if you didn't balance it out with the soy). The soy garlic is a bit sweeter and saltier with a nice garlic flavor. We would recommend getting the combo of flavors. We ordered via phone and both orders took roughly 10 minutes. However, there was an extensive wait for dine in on both days. The chicken here is totally solid. Everything else is just ok. I've never really experienced Korean fried chicken before, the flavors, seasonings, and most of all crispy skin are all pretty awesome. We came here with 5 of us sitting at the bar, the location is fairly small, and if there is a rush you'll definitely have to do your fair share of waiting. This is definitely a glorified chicken place, with fancy plates, sharp decor, and a contemporary vibe. We tried the tofu salad, a large order of mixed chicken, sweet potato fries and fried zucchini. I'd have to say everyone's favorite was hands down the chicken and fried zucchini. It's a little pricey for fried chicken, mostly if you were to compare it to places where you'd usually get fried chicken, but it does taste unique. Bon Chon? More like BOMB Chon. I have already come here twice in two weeks. The flavor and crispiness of the chicken is addicting! My suggestion? Go during dinnertime, order Combo A - 20 pieces of chicken, an appetizer, two sides, and best of all a whole pitcher of beer - all under $40. The meal is perfection! To start off I've tried the zucchini fries and seasoned curly fries. I wasn't much of a fan of the zucchini fries. They were too breaded while the curly fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned. For the chicken I suggest trying both the spicy soy garlic and the regular soy garlic flavors. I think my favorite is the spicy soy garlic but it's nice to cool off my mouth with some regular ones too. The thing that surprised me most about Bon Chon's chicken is that it's not saucy at all! The flavor is fried into the chicken leaving every bite incredibly flavorful. I was skeptical about bringing home the leftovers because usually fried chicken is super soggy the next day, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was just as tasty although not as crispy. I've eaten here many times and really enjoy the fried chicken here. My friend and I usually share the 10 piece soy flavored wings, which come with a side (rice, biscuit, or coleslaw) as well. YUMMO! Ordered the small with three drumsticks and soy garlic sauce. PERFECT. I ordered a side of rice and had the coleslaw too. One side dish is sufficent after you've shared their soy garlic postickers! Wasn't packed when we got there a little before 1pm on a weekday. Chicken was served nice and hot. They have other food, but I prefer the chicken! Would love to see a Bon Chon Chicken in the Peninsula! read more
