Add that with both sauce and omg it's so satisfying. The coleslaw is nothing special but I'm a huge carnivore and probably just don't appreciate my veggies enough. I love to eat rice and it's $2 for a bowl. The large yogurt soju tasted light and smooth. The large is good for about 16 shots. I have a decent tolerance and got a very light buzz from my 8 shots. It's very tasty and worth drinking with the chickens. The restaurant is smaller than most. It's clean and has a nice environment. We arrived around 4pm on a Friday. Fremont High is nearby and there were a ton kids around. The service that we got here was amazing. Our waiter was funny and how can we not appreciate a good laugh before a meal? Excellent Experience Sure Covid19 restrictions are affecting many businesses. The employees had a great attitude and were patient when taking order (not too familiar with their dishes). Ordered lunch food last Sunday for the first time. Here it is: 2 katsu chicken with rice (chicken is very dry, my grandboys who loves katsu wouldn't eat it); popcorn shrimp appetizer (everybody said it was good); beef with onions (it's ok). After having Bonchon on my Yelp Bookmarks, I finally tried it this week! I ordered using their online ordering system which was pretty easy. I got the lunch special which ended up being $10.36 with tax which is a great deal for the bay area. I got the strips with half soy garlic and half spicy. I chose kimchi coleslaw as my side. First, the chicken was awesome. The crunchy was addictive and the the flavors were good. The hot version had a nice little bit of heat as well. The kimchi coleslaw was okay and the pickled daikon was nice to have. The pick up set up was good as well. The line was divided between deliver services and phone/ online orders and there was plenty of distance between customers. Bon Chon really stepped it up in the customer service department the other day. I brought a whole group of people who never heard of Bon Chon (other than my raving) for dinner recently. One of my friends has a lot of dietary allergies. For one, she can't have anything with msg or soy sauce. The lady on duty the night we went in was awesome! I didn't catch her name, but she graciously helped my friend find something she could eat, answered questions about various possible accommodations, and did it all without making my friend feel bad. Our actual waiter was a new face to me. I don't remember seeing him before. He was also great. After he took the orders from everyone in our large group, he went back and reread what he wrote down to make sure he got everything correctly. I won't list everything we ate, as my previous reviews have described the food already. The one new item was the tonkatsu dinner, which my dietary-restricted friend ordered. That was a LARGE portion of perfectly fried pork cutlets (yes I tasted it). She loved her entree and was even more pleased with the outstanding customer service she received at Bon Chon. Every single person in our group enjoyed their food. One friend actually had leftovers, and he reported to us that it was still crunchy and delicious when he had a midnight snack later. This was literally the worst fried chicken I've ever had. Sadly, the best item we ordered was the basket of curly fries. And the curly fries tasted like something you'd get out of the frozen aisle at the grocery store. It just went downhill from there. Next best (or next worst?) was the small order of mixed drums and wings with the soy garlic sauce. The chicken was moist and the batter was crispy, but the sauce was lacking. And last was the medium order of white meat, half with the soy garlic sauce and half with the spicy hot garlic sauce. This was the driest chicken I've ever had in my life. And the batter wasn't crispy. And the sauce flavor was lacking for both the spicy and soy. We even sent them back for another round of sauce, and they were still dry and lacking flavor. So I was excited when I discovered them on Yelp; finally I can try some good o' fried chicken with a Korean twist. PARKING + AMBIENCE The restaurant is located in a large plaza, so parking only takes a couple of seconds to find, depending on how close you want to park to the restaurant. The ambience is loud and noisy during dinner hours, it was packed to the tee. The interior design is somewhat modern, decent enough for a good dining spot with friends. There is a good amount of seating capacity, but not enough for the dinner rush and the table arrangement is cluttered closely together. FOOD I got a medium combo (10 wings + 5 drums) for $24~ and it's a perfect size to share with another person. Three complimentary sides are available with pickled radish pre-included. For the other two sides, I picked the kimchi and rice. The sides were served in a small portioned cup. I enjoyed the flavors as well as the the crispy skin and tender chicken. No wonder it's such a popular local eatery, the fried chicken is bomb! They have two sauce options, soy garlic sauce or the spicy version of it. I decided on the spicy soy garlic sauce. The sauce was a good level of spicy, something that you can enjoy without having to chug water every couple of seconds/minute. SERVICE I decided to order to-go since the restaurant was packed. After ordering at the front, we waited about 10 minutes for our order. Other patrons also waited outside and inside the restaurant for their orders. The staff worked did their best to try to accommodate everyone. CONCLUSION I recommend ordering take out over the phone if you're coming around dinner time. When I arrived, no seating was available, so it's probably more efficient to pick up your order at the designated time instead of coming here and waiting outside for your order. The sides could have been better portioned though, just a little bit of a larger serving size would have been perfect. The price is a little expensive, but should be okay if you split the bill with a friend. This place goes from great-to-bad (way too often over the years), and I've always given this place the benefit of the doubt (plus it is next to a comic book store I like). I hope that those in charge (if there is anyone in charge) performs meaningful change that actually sticks. So what caused me to be compelled to write: it's nearly a year of weirdness and all places (by now) should have developed protocols by this point - that's reasonable. I order and give them 45 min before even checking in. Meanwhile, I'm seeing two people loading up bag after bag after bag - completely unaware of the crowd I suppose, the third was - I don't even really know, they were doing something (this is all the people in the front by the way). Person 1 then shouts out about a dozen names, why even look at the crowd to see if there was any response... So about half of us line and up the other half - muscle their way between, because their name was called and didn't hear anyone one else's name. This was going to happen if you do something like that and is makes for more vectors. I blame the lack of protocols and/or training. I'm not upset still at this point (afterall it is 2020). Here's where I get mad: Person 1 then moves the bags from the counter top to a nearby table... All of these bags. Instead of thinking that perhaps some of these bags had humans waiting in the poorly labeled lines, why not just move all the bags between point A to point B. I have better places to spend an hour (I'm not factoring in my time online to order, by the by) as well as my cash. The biscuits were buttery and nice, but the star is the kimchi coleslaw. One of the best chicken wings in the area. Good size chicken pieces, excellent exterior crunch, acceptable price, and simply, delicious flavors. Our usual order is either all wings, or part wings and part drumstick, and always half soy sauce/half spicy. The spicy is good spicy, and the soy sauce pieces help balance it out. We've both dined in and gotten take out. Wait can be quite long, especially with a group, if you want to dine in so suggest calling in ahead and getting take out if you can. read more
