The only bagel place in SF I found that even comes close to rivaling a sourdough bagel in New York. I'm a big fan a bagel with a crispy exterior and a chewy interior and this one does exactly that my favorite bagel here is the seasonal tomato one which uses fresh tomatoes (for a heftier price of course). There's often a line at bones bagels if you go past 10 on the weekend so come early if you want to just grab and go quickly. The staff is very friendly and they also provide free water and there is some limited bench seating overall I love to stop here when I'm in the neighborhood, but it's still a small notch below Apollo bagels tomato bagel in New York. Arrived quite hungry, I'm a sucker for everything bagel with lox and cream cheese. I would preferred more options than what they had but I know this is the model now,a limited menu. It's not a sitdown place, but they do have a parklet outside, so I got my bagel and sat in the sun. I was a little surprised that was open face, but that's fine. I did notice that they had drizzled oil on the locks and capers, which not really to my liking. But like I said, I was starving so I dug in. While I was eating the first half I noticed that the bagel was extremely crunchy to the point of being burned. I had actually not ordered a toasted bagel, but assumed maybe that that's just how they do a bagel sandwich. As I started on the second half, and fellow patron asked me how it was, I pointed out it was burned, and she said you should bring it back. I told her I didn't think they would do me much good as I've already eaten half of the sandwich. But then I noticed that this half was more than burned. It was charcoal, which really pissed me off. We arrived around noon on a Sunday and were lucky to find no line. I've passed by Bones Bagels before and have seen the line stretch down the block, so I was expecting a much longer wait. When we got there they were already sold out of the rosemary bagel. By the time we finished eating, they had sold out of all their bagels. My boyfriend and I both ordered the salmon sandwich. He got his on an everything bagel, and I chose a plain bagel. I love a good bagel sandwich, and this one was phenomenal. The ingredients are simple, but the flavors really delivered. Every bite that had a little bit of everything was perfect. The bagel itself was chewy, although that did make the open-faced sandwich a little challenging to eat. Seating is pretty limited. There's a small parklet with a bench outside and a bench inside, but not much else, so it's not the most comfortable place to eat and linger. Service was whatever. Second time coming here and as usual, there was a line but it does move quickly and it is so worth it. This time instead of the veggie bagel, I got a bagel with chilli cream cheese. First of all the bagels taste is amazing. They toasted it perfectly well and that cream cheese is so good for the price as well so affordable and so delicious. Yummy yummy but kinda expensive. I got the veggie sandwich for $15 and this was what was on it (in picture). The sourdough bagels are really special and taste delicious. Plenty of well deserved five star reviews mixed with some hilarious 1-3 star reviews, so I must add my opinion to the chorus 'cause these bagels are what my dreams are made of XD If you love sourdough, you should absolutely put Bones on the top of your "must visit ASAP" list. I have loved sourdough since the womb. I especially love sourdough crust when it is ~just right~, which is kinda sorta hard to do. Bones' bagels give the perfect proportion of moist, tart, bouncy inside and chewy, golden crust in every bite. Pro tip: take the bagels home and top them as you see fit. This is the only way I'll have Bones after a few too many outrageously-toasted-in-house. If you're lucky, your untoastrd bagel will be warm and all you'll need is a tub of cream cheese or your favorite butter (Beurre d'Isigny, duh) to reach peak indulgence. Line might feel long and slow, but you should blame the patrons, not the staff. Staff routinely moves as fast as they can each time I visit, but I also don't go mid-Saturday when everyone abs their mother is out and about in Noe. Ambience really depends on patrons, as well. My only gripe: Salted rosemary should be a weekly option and not a special. We get 6 at a time and they don't last more than 2 days. read more

Bones bagels are pricey but MAN are they good. These are specialized sourdough bagels, they are perfectly chewy and well-baked like a New York bagel. They come in all the flavors you would expect, like sesame, and some you have never tried before, like Rosemary sea salt! Super delicious. They also offer sandwiches, the traditional cream cheese and lox as well as vegetarian options. They are delicious. There's usually a line out the door on weekends. This is in part due to their limited hours, only Thursday through Sunday 9 AM to 2 PM. Best bet is to order online in advance. Bones Bagels probably has my favorite bagels in the city. They are a bit different than regular bagels as they are sourdough bagels, making them a lot softer and chewier than regular bagels. The think that really sets it apart from their competitors however, it's the fresh toppings they serve on their bagel sandwiches. I love a classic lox bagel, that is usually my go-to order, and while theirs is delicious, their vegetarian bagel sandwiches are the ones that really blow me away. With impossibly fresh tomatoes, flakey sea salt, and flavorful olive oil, this makes for an absolutely incredible bagel. My favorite way to eat one is open-faced with avocado or cream cheese and slices of seasoned peak-summer tomato. Enter: Bones Bagels. Their seasonal bagel right now involves tomatoes, so it felt like the right time to give them a try. The open crumb and sourdough flavor were really good, and even the plain bagel had an interesting crust going on. The veggie bagel sando tied perfectly into that tomato craving: fresh, well seasoned, with a speckling of dill. I also really liked the cream cheese. I don't know if they make it in-house but it tasted more like soft feta than Philadelphia, which is a big plus in my book because I don't love cream cheese. My only gripe was that the tomato was cold, which made me think it had been refrigerated. That takes away from the beautiful flavor of summer tomatoes :'() For a wild card menu item- they also do a "bagel dog"- a hot link sausage wrapped in bagel dough. SOURDOUGH BAGELS! It is borderline too chewy to the point where I was worried I'd have fillings falling out of my teeth; it's almost Montreal bagel-like. The price and wait are better than Courage Bagels in LA, but there's the same chewiness and elevated lox experience. The cream cheese is salty and almost like cheese (instead of cream, like what Boichik is like). The little glug of olive oil really elevates the experience. SO happy to have this neighborhood gem that's walking distance from me! I love a good bagel and I love sourdough, so these sourdough bagels are IT for me. I will say they are the chewiest bagels I've had, even for sourdough bagels. I wouldn't mind a liiittle less chew but they're still great for me to visit at least once a week. Love the heavy on "everything" on the everything bagel and the green onion & chive cream cheese is on point. We wanted to try their chili crisp cream cheese but looks like it's off the menu at least for now. Would love to see this come back! It's fun that they try a unique flavor every once in a while. I read he milled his own grains with a stationary bike AND delivered all the bagels himself throughout the city...on bike. If you know the city, the hills are no joke! L I N E I overheard the first person in line arrived at 7:30 am. I arrived about 10 minutes before opening and was 5th in line. By their 8 am opening, I counted about 45-50 people in line. M E N U Bagels: Plain, everything, and sesame ($3 each), Bagel Dogs ($6, after 11 am), Bagel Sandwiches ($10-$16), and Housemade Cream Cheese (8 oz - $6). Coffee and OJ available. Bialys to come. My favorite bagel place ever! You can tell they put a lot of effort into both the food & the space. The aesthetic is so cute and I love the hand drawn menu. I always get the salmon bagel. The lemon wedge and olive oil really add some flavor & the bagel is always crunchy and so fresh. I was really excited to finally try this spot after hearing so many people call it the best bagel in the city. The vibe is adorable and I love the interior. You can tell there's a lot of heart behind the place and tons of potential. I think I may have just caught an off day because the bagel I had was not quite what I expected. It was surprisingly tough to chew, almost like my masseters got a full-blown Lagree workout, and the sourdough flavor didn't really come through. My husband and I both ordered an everything bagel with green onion and chive cream cheese, and while we were excited to really taste the bagel itself, it just didn't wow us in any way. Next visit, I definitely want to try a couple of different options instead of sticking with the plain bagel and spread. The veggie bagels in the photos look so fresh and delicious, and I'm curious to try their sandwiches and the bagel dog. I also think a bacon or sausage, egg, and cheese would be amazing on the regular menu. I saw they only offer it on Thursday mornings from 8 to 10 am, which I probably won't ever make, so hopefully they add it to full service someday. The best part of our visit this time was the Four Barrel drip coffee, which was excellent. I came on a Sunday and parking took a bit of patience since there's a church nearby. The shop is small and the line was long, but the bagels came out super fast. We were in and out in under fifteen minutes. We decided on the brown butter pecan cookie, everything bagel with a kick with green onion chive cream cheese, and cold brew from Four Barrel (Mission coffee shop that slaps).
