i couldn't get up by 8am for the grand opening so my partner got bagels and brought them home lol. judging by the fact that it took about 2 hours, seems like there were a lot of people in line! the everything bagels had a LOT of seeds on them, which i liked. they had a super crispy crust and were more like Montreal style bagels (thinner and less soft than NYC style), so it's hard to compare them to popular places like Boichik, Schlok's, etc. the texture was very satisfying so my main complaint was i felt they could use a touch more salt and sourdough flavor. the salmon sandwich was served open-faced, with a decent amount of cream cheese, lox, thinly sliced cucumber, and pickled onion. every ingredient tasted super fresh, and the lox especially wasn't too salty or fishy at all. i tried all of their cream cheese flavors (plain, chili, and chive) and wasn't a huge fan of any of them because the texture was oddly crumbly instead of creamy. my favorite was the chive; the chili one was barely spicy at all. hoping they add more sandwich options and bagel flavors because i would definitely come back if i'm craving an artisanal bagel experience! read more

I went a day after their grand opening and was excited to see what the hype was about. Got there around 9am on a Saturday and I waited in line for about 20 min to order and then got my bagels pretty quickly after. I got the everything bagel with chives cream cheese and my boyfriend got the sesame bagel with chili oil cream cheese. These bagels are much thinner than your regular bagels and honestly both of our jaws hurt from eating it because they were pretty tough. I did ask for them to be toasted so maybe that's why but it didn't really stand out to me. I've never had sourdough bagels before and that seems to be the big thing about this place. Don't think I'll wait in line for these again but it was good to try once. read more

I haven't been wowed by a bagel sandwich in such a long time. But this one really took me by surprise. You need to try the lox sandwich with the pesto spread. I was floored, such a perfect balance of hints of sweet and salty and savory. And the lox was insanely fresh. I really like sourdough bagels now. This place is amazing! The lemon poppyseed cake was absolutely delicious! I didn't get a chance to take a picture because I ate it all before I could remember. But it was delectable. Fluffy and perfect. Went Friday around 1130. There were only couple of other customers. Service was friendly. Everything was easy. I got the lox bagel. Came in about 2 minutes (maybe they were too stoned for the opening weekend rush?). I really liked it. The sourdough does give the bagel a little extra flavor, nothing powerful, but noticeable. I thought it was constructed very well. Often times the cucumber to salmon to cream cheese balance makes it so everything slides off the bagel when you bite into it but not here. I also really liked that they used pickled onions. I love red onions but using pickled ones made the flavor a little different than the standard lox bagel. As far as the tough to chew that many others wrote about, it's true but I found if I took smaller bites it was ok. The outer edge of the bagel is the chewiest. When biting the center it was a perfect chew. Maybe they boil too long? Maybe it's because of the sourdough? Either way, I found it to be easily remedied. read more

Delicious bagel dog (available after 11)! Hot link inside has a little spicy kick but its flavorful chewy bagel blanket tempers the heat nicely. Cornmeal on the bottom is a nice touch. It's $7 but well worth the price. Yes, you can get a bigger, cheaper one down the street but I would rather pay more for quality ingredients. Great new addition to my old hood (Noe Valley). Sourdough bagels might tick off a few New Yorkers, otherwise it's a nice twist and fits in SF.. The veggie bagel was my fav, I do wish there were a few more choices but otherwise a great way to start your day. Right down 24th you can get sourdough crust pizza, SF loves the sourdough! I do love the simplicity, the staff was very helpful and kind. I see them growing quickly so try it before the line gets longer! read more

Really a line for this?! I tried the everything bagel and the Asiago, as is , so as to not influence the flavor. 1st: Aesthetics: the look sloppy and unappetizing. Shapes are all over the place. 2nd : Some were almost burn/toasted in some areas , so uneven in the baking process. 3rd: Too dense, not fluffy enough on the inside, a bit tough on the outside. Found myself chewing a bit too long on every bite. 4th Flavor. Sure it has a slight sourdough taste but 1-3 doesn't make it worth it. Better bagel places out there. aesthetic: 4/5 food: 2.5/5 service: 2.5/5 decided to try out this bagel spot after seeing a weekend crowd in front of the store, and my experience fell short of my expectations. my family and i ordered 3 bagel sandwiches (2 salmon and 1 vegan), as well as a strawberry almond scone for them to try. we waited about 20 minutes, which was reasonable given the length of their 9:30am saturday morning line. while this place specialises in sourdough bagels, the real star of the menu is the scone. my family couldn't stop eating the scone and they said they'd order a boxfull of them to enjoy through the week. for the bagels, they are pretty tough to chew (not sure if this a sourdough bagel characteristic) and the cashew spread is very minimal, causing the vegetable toppings to easily fall off. i usually love a huge dollop of cream cheese, so bones may be the spot for you if you prefer a lightly-spreaded bagel. despite the adorable interior, bones isn't worth the wait - there is no seating so would recommend taking a stroll down 24th to kill time or find a seat to eat your takeout style order. read more

As a long-time Noe Valley resident, I want to see every local business succeed, and I wish Bones the best. The bagels are ok, though they are sourdough bread, not a traditional bagel, and more chewy/dense and not always easy to eat for some people or children. That said, the customer experience has consistently been disappointing. Despite a simple menu, our orders have been incorrect on multiple visits. The final straw came today: after waiting in line for a while, the shop announced they had completely run out of bagels two hours before closing. This was frustrating and felt disrespectful of customers' time. At the very least, staff should monitor production and let people know before customers join a line if the bakery is running low on your only product. It's good to see the shop drawing customers, and I hope that momentum continues. But if Bones wants to build neighborhood loyalty beyond the initial novelty, improvements in service and operations are essential. After repeated missteps, I can no longer rely on this spot, especially when other nearby bakeries and bagel shops offer excellent choices of all kinds of baked goods with dependable service. read more

Living in NY and coming back to SF, it was hard to find a good bagel. However, I went to try Bones Bagels and it was great! It's not your average fluffy bagel but instead it's a thin, sourdough one. It was delicious and it didn't have a lot of excess dough in the middle and more of a low-carb bagel. Definitely go try it! read more
