Talk about service! This deli was slammed and when I made a request for a vegan sandwich -- I bought the tofurkey and stuff in the store first -- these ladies TOTALLY hooked me up. The sandwich was so big that I shared it with a co-worker and we were both pretty satisfied. Lots of great options for groceries & beer to bring back to the hotel, wide variety of deli items and super fast service at the cash register and deli. We came to this market before we saw a movie at the Village Theater. We wanted to quick bite and saw that there was a Vons in the area, but I wanted something more local and in the end, Boney's won! The wait time was a bit long (I think we waited almost 20 minutes for two sandwiches), but it was a Saturday and busy. Just seemed like they needed more help. I ended up getting the Roast Beef Blue (roast beef, horseradish, and blue cheese) sandwich off their menu. It was really good, but very rich. I should have known, but it wasn't the best choice on a hot day. My boyfriend got the Island Baja. That was my favorite of the two! His had turkey, pepper jack cheese, avocado, tomato, and chipotle mayo. The prices are not bad, each sandwich was $6.95 and they use Boar's Head so that's always a win in my book. This is a great neighborhood market nicely situated on the outskirts of the hustle and bustle of Coronado. It has a mini Whole Foods vibe while leaving out the pretense. The prices were actually quite decent and it made me yearn for a small market in my own neighborhood. Got a couple sandwiches, potato salad and fruit to go and it was like $5-$6 for a nice size sandwich. What a deal and tasty too. Lots of places to eat on Coronado but save about $50 and come here for a couple of sandwiches and. Drink or two. I haven't had very good food on Coronado elsewhere so save it for other parts of SD. read more

I purchased the Coronado club sandwich and a package of Chile powder mango's. The sandwich was a wonderful reminder of the past (a time when all vegetables were organic, a time before subway when the Ma and Pa sandwich shop reigned supreme). The Chile mango's on the other hand posed a significant problem that almost cost me my employment. The mango's were instantly thrown in the trash by all who tried them. Next thing I know the entire office is up in arms and my well being was threatened. My supervisor told me to "get that dog shit out of here its making the office stink like egg farts and Indian curry left in the sun." Other than that the experience was great and I would definitely recommend it. P.S. The store is okay; we routinely shop there absent local options (although those days are over). My issue is with the owner who, although happy to take money from service members serving at the local bases, does not support service members... I know this because I live by her and she is continually calling the police (she boasts about it no less) to get the cars of service members who reside on the street towed if they happen to be out at sea for training, etc. and have not moved their car in 72 hours. Get over yourself already... there are plenty of other problems in the world. read more

The Island Baja sandwich at Bonney's Bayside is remarkable. For 6.95 you get a sandwich that surpasses the quality of a Subway. It is phenomenal, how the sandwich is well put together. The texture, flavor, and satisfactory levels of this particular sandwich are exceptional. A better alternative to Subway. You can't beat the price for a healthy sandwich. This is about the deli. Great sandwiches but I have counted 7 people behind the counter (even the owner) multiple times and they will simply ignore you. Apparently they feel you will wait until they bless you with service. I have stopped buying sandwiches from them. At least at Sprouts, they make great sandwiches and rush to serve the customer. Then I checked the place on yelp and it was a yelp matchmade in heaven! Lots of service personnel in Jumpsuits, so you know it has to be good! HUGE portions on their sandwiches. I loooooved the Reuben. The Coronado club was huge and I was forced to finish the rest of that sandwich. Lots of meat and everything in between. I have frequented Boney's over the years as they have a great deli and selection of organic and healthy produce. Normally the associates are friendly and helpful but my last experience just confirmed that I will never come back. I phoned ahead my sandwich order to the deli (like I usually do) and the two associates I talked to were friendly and got my order in right away. When I went to get my sandwiches, I waited by the pick up section. FOUR associates saw me and made eye contact with me and none of them greeted me or asked if I had been helped. All the while THREE other customers walked right up and were helped right away. A solid five minutes go by and I'm completely ignored until they call my name out for my order. As I pay for my sandwiches, I asked to speak to a manager. The manager was not helpful nor empathetic in the slightest. After explaining what happened, she was like "well you were at the pick up window". Yes, I know I was at the pick up window. That's where you go when you place a to go order. The customer service was beyond disappointing and I did not appreciate how patronizing the manager was. There was no apology or anything - instead she kept saying that the employees at the deli were new. The cashier then said "I didn't hear a word you said". Seriously? Was that necessary? First time here and have lived in San Diego over 30 years. It's a cute, speciality grocery store. As you enter Boney's - you are greeted by the sweet smell of the Gardenia bushes. The produce seemed reasonably priced. I was on the phone while my husband was picking up our groceries but I did note - Boney's is like mini Sprouts market with speciality items. Amazing sandwiches! First of all, their prices for these cannot be beat. I often pay almost double the price and these were a good size. We tried a few different ones and loved them all! This is a small cute upscale market on Coronado - it's pretty much exactly what you would expect for Coronado, really. Despite there being only two cashiers, I have never seen a line more than 2 people and the parking lot provides immediate access to the store - something that's a bit of a luxury on Orange Ave. The best part of this store for me is their deli which makes fantastic sandwiches and stocks some great pre made items too like quinoa and edamame "salad." They have a decent selection of local beers (made literally across the street in some cases) and sodas as well. Enjoy Boney's next time you do lunch on the island! read more

Boney's used to be owned by Whole Foods and the set up and inventory was identical to any Whole Foods store. Now, Boney's is independently owned and the difference is positive. They have a ton of great snacks in different sizes. They have all sorts of sandwhiches and healthy salads that are portioned out for conveinence. The perfect place to find vegan goods on Coronado. The deli has at least three cold salads that are vegan. My partner and I shared the southwestern quinoa salad, Sicilian salad (kalamata olives, white beans, and red peppers in an olive oil dressing), and a citrus beet salad. All of the cold salads had pretty mild flavors, except for the Sicilian, whose bold flavor came from Kalamata olives. The deli prepared us a veggie sandwich that was packed with cucumbers, sprouts, peppers, lettuce, and veganaise for a mere five dollars. While it wasn't the best sandwich, it was a great value. It made picking up a lovely picnic lunch that much easier. There are a ton of vegan ice cream choices here. They even carry single serving Almond Dream ice cream bars in chocolate and vanilla. I am regretfully lowering my 5-star review to 3. I Love This Place. So what happened? Their inventory management stinks. They are often out of the things you go there for: fresh produce and meat and freshly baked rolls. Also some staples that have always been there ( salad toppers for example) are stocked---sometimes! The meat quality has decreased as well. If Boney's is suffering supply chain issues, put up signs so we know it's not your fault. So here's the deal. Boney's has this great sandwich on focaccia bread that my wife and I would get on our Sunday trips to Coronado. But the last four times we have come on Sunday night they are out of focaccia bread. They'll make the same sandwich on regular bread but it means the sandwich is about half the size. What a bummer, Boney's you used to be my go to grocery store in Coronado. I knew your prices were slightly above others but loved what you carried and also enjoyed helping our locals as we are locals. I'd say I go to Boney's weekly....well today that has stopped. I went to check out with my items and they had one line open with one checker (which is fine, I get it, clients ebb and flow), I noticed two ladies behind the register at another station chatting so I asked, "Are you open?" Neither one of the ladies I was speaking to responded but a young girl responded from the doorway behind the registers where she was sweeping and adamantly responded, "No!" I said ok and walked away and got in line with the one checker open that had 4 people waiting in line. At that time, another check stand opened to my left and then another to my right and as I was walking up to unload my groceries I said to newly opening checkstand, "great, you've opened" and the clerk was the girl who previously spoke to me while she was sweeping and so she then rudely replies with attitude, "Well I was sweeping so" and rolled her eyes at me!! I at first let it go but then as I was checking out thought, wow I can't believe this young girl thinks it is ok and professional to speak to a customer this way so I turned to her and asked, "What is your name?" and she states, "What's your name?" and with utter shock I replied, "Excuse me?" and she states, "You want to know my name, you don't need to know a thing about me, I don't need to tell you anything." At this point, I am literally blown away at this girls behavior as she is standing and working as a checker representing this store. I replied, "Wow, I can't believe how unprofessional you are being" and continued to repeat the entire events I just spoke of to her and she continued to argue with me. Low and behold when I asked for the manager he was supplying the shelves directly in front of this entire occurrence and told his employee to stop and continue working but she continued to rattle off under her tongue. When I went to grab my groceries and leave, I approached the manager who was supplying and when asked, stated his name was Ryan therefore, I am to assume that this is one of the owners along with his mother, Debbie Boney. He did admit he would speak to her and he knew what had happened but honestly seemed less than concerned. I'm sorry Boney's but employee's with attitudes such as this are simply a disgrace and an embarrassment to the standards I would think you would want to achieve as a storefront. Unfortunately, several customers witnessed this event and a store clerk giving off a lovely, snobby, entitled attitude. I never did get her name but a little advice for her since she appeared to be a very young adult...treat people with respect, no need to be so defensive, snarky, cruel, or just flat out mean, be thankful you have employment in a state where 5 million people do not have a paying job right now, be thankful that the store that employs you has paying customers who can afford to shop there and buy food or supplies for their homes...there are many worse things in this world than a customer stating, "great, now you've opened" to you. :-( Sorry Boney's, good luck with your employee, too much entitlement :-/. read more

The deli staff is not well trained. They don't know their own posted menu. I ordered a turkey sandwich with sprout per their menu and they gave me a funny look then scribbled something. I knew then I probably wouldn't get what I ordered. Then after we got our sandwiches they only cut one sandwich and not the other. The way they cut it was funny so it was not equally cut and caused the meat to fall out. Oh yes, I never got sprouts on my sandwich. There's a couple other places you can get sandwiches from. I would go there. Your better off even going to Vons. At least they're competent. It's not that hard to make a decent sandwich! read more

When I used to work in Coronado I used to rely on this place for lunches. This is basically Coronado's Sprouts. Same kind of deal. It's a little smaller and a little more expensive, but that's Coronado. I find it's a little less crowded on this side of Coronado, which is nice. I never really shopped here, but it has the usual items, as well as some specialty food items. Many locals and military come for the deli though. It has excellent sandwiches, soup, deli meat and salad case, and a heated case. The heated case has chicken, sausages, ribs and sometimes even tri-tip. If you order a sandwich from the counter it can be a little bit of a wait during lunchtime. It gets pretty busy. You can oder ahead though, or there are plenty of ready made sandwiches and salads to grab, too. If you are in the throngs of tourists in Coronado and just want something simple to eat, like an apple and a sandwich, without the wait or drama this is a good spot. read more
