I was really hoping this place would be good but my goodness, I had a very bad experience. The service was good, and the waitress was attentive. My bad experience was mostly with the food itself. I lived in japan for a while, so maybe I am biased; but the sushi was not good. The rice in our nigiri was warmer than it should be and tasted old. The rice that accompanied our "tempura" also tasted old and dry. The fish (tuna sashimi and salmon nigiri) was okay but not worth the price. The tempura was dark for what is supposed to be a lightly fried dish. The vegetable gyoza was a very odd texture, what I could only guess was weirdly deep fried from frozen? As the gyoza I am used to is a soft steamed dumpling with a nice crunchy bottom. The worst was honestly the snow crab sushi, maybe this was my mistake ordering it, but I love snow crab. All the snow crab I have ever eaten has been juicy and plump. This snow crab was so dry and thin, I would have preferred they give me surimi (the fake 'krab'). As I also work in food service, I didn't want to send anything back, nor did I want to create a fuss. Due to COVID, money is tight and a date night that we looked forward to was dampened by bad food at a bad price point. We ate most of our food as not to be rude but by the time I got to the car I felt angry about what I just ate. How could you serve someone this? How could a chef let that leave the kitchen? It was crowded for a small place, but I am unsure of the raving reviews it is getting... Maybe I should have looked at the multiple red flags: cream cheese/deep fried (read:gimmicky) 'sushi rolls' galore, country music playing throughout our date night and the unhappy customers we saw through the window pane attached to our table. read more

Okay guys, I love sushi. This is my favorite sushi in Orlando, hands down! Kabooki sushi always gets voted "best" but I truly think Bonsai is better and much better prices! It's not as fancy as some of the others in town, but don't let that deter you from experiencing this deliciousness wrapped in sticky rice and seaweed. Bonsai is a nice choice for sushi in the Conroy-Windermere-Dr. Phillips area. As others have said, it's quite small and intimate. For my wife and I, this is the go-to place for a sushi Date Night! We have been coming here for several years, and tried it on the recommendation of one of my wife's co-workers. At first I was going to give 4 stars because I had a bit of a wait and the service seemed a little slow. Then, my food came out and it started slowing down later in the evening and the true awesomeness came shining through! I ordered the robin's nest. It came out as a glorious tower of sashimi and avocado beautifully artistic and the tuna was fresh and delicious. I highly recommend trying it. I also ordered the Harley roll. It came out about twice as large as I thought it would be. So, my standard avocado roll palate cleanser was not even touched. That was equally delicious. The quantity and quality here were fantastic. Once the small space started clearing out, the staff was able to show more personality. They seem to really know their regulars, and will make you feel very welcome and at home when they have time to stop and chat. We were in Orlando for a conference/vacation and wanted to get away from the expensive hotel restaurants and found this place on Yelp. Took the advice on the Robins Nest and was not disappointed! Our other favorite was the Snow White roll. But our hands-down favorite was the Tempura Cheesecake. Oh my Lord. My husband, my daughter and I literally scarfed it down so fast the waitress was even shocked. Save room for this treat, it's a MUST! But you don't know till you try it. This place delivers!! Bonsai is a family run business & fortunately close to my work (Yes!) but unfortunately a fair distance away from home. That makes it hard to traverse Orlando for a meal on weekends. Plus, Bonsai is closed on Sunday so that really only leaves Saturday. But hey ... Even the owners have to take time off!! That said, this little sushi joint is Da' BOMB!! The quality of their sushi is over-the-top!! You can tell if you just get sashimi (no rice) cuts of Salmon & Tuna. The salmon melts in your mouth ... It always has a buttery texture that simply delivers every time! It's usually cut larger than most other places but thin enough that you don't feel like it's too big. One piece of sashimi is 3 bites. The tuna is offered in Akami (leaner side) or Toro (belly) cuts & is absolutely worth getting by itself!! Sometimes I order a spicy tuna & salmon poke bowl & love every bite. If you're up for a chef-picked meal, ask for the 9 Piece Sushi Sampler & you won't be disappointed!!! Last but not least, they actually have real wasabi root chopped up but you have to ask for it or you'll get the more common western version of horseradish powder!! Great sushi place. The actual dining area is small which is usually expected with small sushi restaurants but the sushi was great. The fish was perfect and probably some of the greatest I have had in the Orlando area. Many of the rolls are similar to those you find at other sushi bars but of course there is always a difference in presentation and quality. Wow, what a find! Thanks to my fellow Yelpers for helping me to uncover this gem on the outskirts of Dr. Phillips. This was a first-date dinner for me, and thank goodness I chose Bonsai. As a customer service junkie, I truly appreciated the smile and greeting we received when we walked in the door. We sat ourselves and our server took the time to explain the menu and how the sushi chefs were more than willing to customize any roll to our liking. She seemed to be there when we needed something, and somewhere else when we didn't. The entire experience is set up so that a first-timer would feel equally as comfortable as a sushi-going vet. Taking the "thinking" out of the experience was just what I needed for this first date! I appreciated the freshness of the house salad and the generous portion of ginger dressing. The Doc Rock Roll was our specialty roll of choice for the evening, and it was my favorite amongst the rolls we ordered. The restaurant itself was smaller than I had imagined, but it made for a more intimate setting which was, for my purposes, spot on what I wanted. As I do whenever I dine solo at a sushi place (hey, I was traveling on business) I ordered a couple maki (Orlando Roll and Super Spicy Tuna Roll) and a couple nigiri (Smoked Salmon and Whelk Clam). We came here every week for 3 months and they still didn't recognize us. I really wanted to leave a good review but tonight just ruined all the good experiences. First our sushi took 40 minutes because they kept taking to go orders and were down a chef, but a table that ordered after us got their food, they did recognize them. Then they sat people next to us without pulling the tables apart, so now we are eating dinner with a party of three we don't know. I don't appreciate that or like it. We aren't in another country or a restaurant where they share tables. Have them wait or pull the table apart. read more

I almost hate to let people know about this place because it a hidden gem! Quality of the tuna was just amazing. We lucked out arriving when there was a table around 6pm. The restaurant filled up quickly and I can see why. The service was very good with both ladies being very attentive and pleasant. Very happy with our experience and this will be our go to place now. This small, unassuming location would make you think the sushi was ..."ehhh" but in reality, they have very flavorful options. Take a look at the board on the wall behind the sushi counter. Although it's a small hidden gem which means if large crowds come in, you may have to wait - the rolls are amazing. Their menu is extremely large, with dozens of rolls to choose from - so take your time reading! The service was great, the waitress was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and surprisingly, be bill was inexpensive. Stumbled upon this place a few weeks ago and glad to be back. It's located in a strip mall and one might drive right by, but it was a great find! Me and my girl already have our favorite seats at the sushi bar. The selection of sushi rolls are excellent and the menu all around is creative and thorough, as when it comes to sushi joints. I don't usually go for dessert at sushi restaurant, more of a rum cake or chocolate guy, but there options are great! (Fried ice cream made me feel like a kid again). I tried this on my Birthday. They we're rated 5 stars for Orlando sushi. They had a lot of options but I thought it was pretty pricey. I have a local restaurant near me that is delicious and cheap. However, one roll I would go back for is one of their signature house rolls. The Tiger Roll. NOM. I have allergies and to find a roll that's sensitive to those needs is great. Plus, the roll has this spicy krab salad underneath the main part and its just mouth watering good! I'd go all the way back out to Metrowest/Dr Phillips just for this one dish! read more

For years I have lived around the corner from this restaurant and have gone here several times for pickup and dine in. While the food is good, I have finally decided that they are not worth the trouble( they're good but not that good). The last several times I have tried to order from them and spent the time figuring out my order, call them and they tell me they won't even take my order. I guess good for them, they don't need or want my business, the employees are somewhat rude and when your competing in a difficult market, I assume you should care about your service. I would suggest Kabooki on Turkey Lake Rd., amazing food but small servings and expensive or Mikado in Metro West, a long standing staple in the area. We came here after being at Universal all day and wanted to get away from the park for dinner. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, she brought us complimentary tea after we sat down. The menu of sushi rolls is extensive, offering something for everyone. I had the Yin Yang roll and it was to die for!!! The fish was fresh and the rolls melted in my mouth. Some of the best sushi I've had in a long time. The seaweed salad was delicious, a little sweetness and well balanced. The miso soup was just ok, definitely had better and cheaper.
