    Barley with banchan
    Vipula G.

One of the most korean food experiences in town. Loved the massive collection of side-dishes in the set menu. The chicken porridge soup was a revelation. Also, clearly my life has been missing out on good pumkin soup. The savory pancakes were so fluffy and crispy - am now obsessed with trying to make them at home. And so much food - didn't even get to the meat! They also had handy take out containers so that nothing goes to waste. The ambience is quite unique - a bit of a hipster cafe vibe but its a full meal restaurant!

Such a Cute restaurant that serves Traditional Korean food! They specialize in bibimbap with assorted seasoned vegetables over barley rice. It also comes with a variety of other dishes such as kimchi pancake, soybean paste stew, perilla chicken porridge, etc. it was visually appealing to see all the dishes and they all tasted good! It was nice and healthy, didn't feel gross after eating but nothing really stood out for us I guess. You can order meats on the side. Doesn't come with the set menu. Service was okay, we had to consistently wave down a person to help us. Overall I'm glad we tried Borit Gogae but not too sure if we'll be going back

Korean comfort food. As soon as I walked through the door, I felt the warm sense of hospitality. It felt like you were going to a family friend's house and you knew you were about to enjoy a great meal. In order to do the 'Set Menu With Barley Rice' you need to have at least 2 people to participate. I dined alone so I wasn't able to order that, but I didn't feel like I missed out at all. I believe you get a comparable amount and variety of banchan when you order any of the proteins on the menu. I myself ordered the dried yellow corvina (fish). The order or set came with some barley, delicious tofu soup, and pretty much more banchan than I can eat myself. Just a wonderful meal and experience.

At first, we were awed by the amount of food. We were hungry so we started to eat things as they came out. We did their special set (can't remember which), but it came with SO MUCH FOOD. I'm adding pictures so I don't have to explain them all. Bottom line though is that we wouldn't necessarily return. Nothing stood out to us. We were over fed. If you have big appetite, this place is for you. I think we were just overwhelmed.

Amazing food, with good amount and good price. The service was friendly and authentic. The ambiance was great and clean. Lots of authentic Korean decor.

Looking for a healthy vegan meal in Ktown LA? Look no further, come over to Borit gogae. They offer a preset menu but do require minimum of two orders. If you ever had Korean Bibimbop, this is similar but with some minor differences. This one uses a barley rice base (compared to white rice in Bibimbop). The barley rice is topped your choice of about 15 different side dishes of lightly flavored savory mountain roots, greens, mushrooms, and peppers. Comes with a soy bean paste that you use to further season. Just mix everything in a larger bowl and serve. OMG. Absolutely incredible!!!!!!!!!! Before this main course, you do get three small bites (pumpkin porridge, scorched rice/tea, and tempura). Additionally three different sides are also served (acorn jelly salad, Korean escargot/snail dish, steamed cabbage), along with perilla chicken soup, and soy bean soup, the latter which is the most traditional Korean dish. Last for dessert you get red bean porridge, dried persimmon rolls, and plum tea. Nothing like this in all of SoCal. A must come and try for all.

Across the street from the new Zion market is this wonderful and unique Korean eatery. Unlike most of the run-of-the-mill Korean restaurants in Koreatown this restaurant serves unique appetizers and a multi-course set menu that gives you a taste of a variety of authentic Korean village food - like pumpkin porridge and acorn jelly salad. It's a lot of food for the price ($35 pp at this writing). While the minimum order is for 2 people, we've tried sharing the 2-people order among 3 and it worked for us, with addition of a couple of other items from the menu. The Korean BBQ beef is at par with most other nice restaurants in K town; their marinated crab was delicious! Service is okay - given how busy they are! Most servers are not very conversant in English so a little patience would help you get the right things you need. Nice and unique vibe with Korean handicraft items and art work on display (and for sale, I believe).

The four of us ordered 3 of the sets and a bulgogi. There are a lot of veggie forward dishes as part of the set, as well as heartier soups. You can customize what you want to add into your rice bowl to make bibimbap. The portions are generous!

Be prepared to walk away feeling very full. We got the set meal here, which came served with appetizers, barley rice, a lot of banchan (and by that I meant a LOT), soup, congee, dessert, etc. It was definitely more than enough food. We also got an additional order of LA kalbi for some protein. The meat quality was good but I felt like the meat was not marinated long enough and so the flavor was a little bit lacking. If only it just sat in the marinade for a couple more hours, I think this would have been perfect. The tofu soup was not my favorite, to be very honest. There was some flavor in there that made it smell like a stinky towel. Very different from other soondubu soup places and unfortunately not for me. Everything else we had was excellent and I would definitely come back again just for the barley rice and banchan. Service was quick and servers were nice. We also came at 3pm on Saturday so there was no wait. Recommended!

I visited during a recent trip to LA, and this was easily one of the best meals I had. The food was incredibly clean and well-balanced in flavor--nothing was overly heavy or overpowering, which made every dish enjoyable. Living in San Jose, it's hard to find this kind of authentic and refined meal, so it was a real treat. The portions were generous, the quality of the food was excellent, and the service was warm and attentive throughout our visit. The only downside is that it's very popular, so be prepared to wait. The wait was longer than expected, but after eating here, I can definitely see why. I'd happily come back the next time I'm in LA.

Despite traveling to the LA area multiple times, we rarely visit Koreatown. We have made multiple attempts to go to this restaurant, but we always ran out of time until now. The wait was worth the reward. The atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming. Set Menu with Barley ~Pumpkin Porridge | Slightly sweet and creamy. ~Banchan | We couldn't keep track of the banchan. The abundance of fresh vegetables made everything taste nutritious. ~Additional Dishes | The chicken porridge reminded us of chicken noodle soup, but more filling. The acorn jelly salad and other fermented dishes were both vibrant and packed with flavors. ~Dessert | Corn porridge with beans was the best sweet porridge dessert ever! Would like to learn to make this at home :) Menu: Aside from the set menu, there were also protein options, such as LA Kalby and Spicy Marinated Crab. Service: The servers were nice and sweet. They were able to accommodate our requests. Parking: Plenty in the parking lot. Highly Recommend!

What an amazing experience! If you want to experience an authentic and luxurious Korean dining experience, this place is a must visit! My recommendation is to come with two or more people. There are so many beautiful dishes served throughout the meal, and I actually feel extremely grateful about how many dishes were prepared. But at this moment, I'm so proud to be Korean!

If you are vegetarian you will love this place. I have been here twice and can say that each time I loved it! Their $35 per person set menu is perfect for when you want some healthy, rejuvenating traditional Korean food. For the amount of homemade items you get, it's a great deal. However you want meat, you will have to purchase additional dishes, which can be quite pricey to add on. For $35 you get a huge variety of banchan to mix with a bowl of rice and make your own bibimbap sesame oil and Gochuchang, two different types of soup, kimchi pancakes, fried seaweed, dessert, tea, and so much more. You will definitely have food to take home. The service is prompt and the electric restaurant decor feels a bit like sitting in someone's home. It's great for when you feel like you need a home cooked meal but want to leave feeling stuffed! It can be a bit of a wait on busy days, so try coming during the weekday/off hours.

    How is the parking?

They have free parking in the lot behind the restaurant where you enter or street parking. You do not enter the restaurant from the street.

    Do they take reservations?

    No they don't take reservations

Does any of the food contain peanuts?

I don't think so. Maybe one of the side dishes do, but it's pretty peanut free. There are sesame seeds this. Chicken and shell fish too.

Are there vegetarian options on the banchan menu, please?

Yes. Most of the ban Chan is vegetarian. Two items are seafood. You should ask if they use shrimp in their kimchee but they all seemed vegetarian to me. You should not get the set since the soup is chicken

Other than the dessert with the walnut, do the other food items contain any form of tree nut? my husband has a tree nut allergy.

    No, no tree nuts.

If you order set banchan menu, can you get a free refill?

I'm afraid it's not refilled as it is part of the main manu called Jung-sik. Banchan is not a side dishes.

I think I've been coming here for a very, very long time--probably for about 20 years! I used to come here quite often back then. At some point, though, I stopped coming as much because the parking situation in this shopping center became so busy and chaotic that it was difficult to even get in from the entrance. Also, the last time I came here, maybe two years ago, the valet parking attendant was so rude that I didn't really feel like coming back. This time, since we were already in the area for the spa, we decided to stop by again. Back when I first started coming here, it was just a very small noodle restaurant. One thing they've kept all these years--and what I think is such a great touch--is that they still serve yeolmu kimchi and kkom-bori-bap (barley rice) as a complimentary side. The restaurant became incredibly popular over the years and eventually expanded into the neighboring space, so there are now many more tables than there used to be. Since it had been such a long time since my last visit, I noticed they had quite a few new menu items that weren't available before, including galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), samgyetang (Korean ginseng chicken soup), and galbi noodle soup. One of my brothers and I ordered the perilla oil makguksu each, and it was absolutely delicious! It had such a rich, nutty flavor from the perilla oil, and it was one of those dishes that makes you think about it again later. In the past, I would always order the clam kalguksu whenever I came here, but this time I decided to try something different. My other brother ordered the clam kalguksu, and my mom had the dolsot (Hot stone) bibimbap. I tried a spoonful of my mom's dolsot bibimbap because I really like bibimbap too, and it was delicious as well. In the past, the wait here used to be incredibly long. You had to write your name and phone number by hand at the entrance, and then a staff member would come outside and call your name when your table was ready. This time, the system was different. We were told to simply wait in line, and she would take our orders outside. She said the wait would only be about 5-10 minutes, and she was absolutely right. While we were waiting in line outside, she handed us menus, took our orders, and then seated us at our table. The food came out quickly, the service was very friendly, and everything we ordered was delicious. It turned out to be a very satisfying dinner. After coming back here again after such a long time, I completely understood why this place has been so popular for so many years. It was just as popular back then as it is now, and honestly, I can see why!

On top of that, the interior is clean, cute, and very well-kept. Parking is quite limited, though--even with valet service, it gets super congested. There's almost always a long line, as it seems like a must-try spot for anyone visiting LA. Because of that, getting a table is usually pretty tough, but we got so lucky last Sunday and were seated right away. The food was absolutely divine, and we left completely satisfied. Honestly, I almost wish fewer people knew about this place so I could come more often. They're just that good.

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.
