After a nice walk through Boston, my wife and I stumbled upon Boston Chowda Co. We did not try a lobster roll because we just had two lobster rolls right before this at Yankee Lobster. However, I am a big fan of some good chowder so I had to try this place. Unfortunately, this place did not impress me very much. I've had some pretty dang good clam chowder in my day and while this was a good clam chowder, the overall flavor did not really compare to some chowders that I've had before. Really delicious New England clam chowder at Quincy Market. There were so many choices because almost every vendor offered it, but we decided on Boston Chowda and I'm glad we did. It was the perfect consistently. Not too thick or watery. The flavor was just clammy enough. Sometimes you get chowders and all you taste is cream and potatoes, but this chowder had a good clam to potato ratio. When we arrived there was a very lengthy line toward the center of the market, so we kept walking...and discovered there is a SECOND line going the opposite direction stemming from a second register that was significantly shorter, win! We decided to order the cold Maine lobster salad roll combo with a corn chowder soup and drink for about $25. The lobster roll gets a 8/10, the lobster quality was good quality and the brioche bun was toasted well, but there was some shredded lettuce on the bottom of the bun that was a bit untraditional. We came here on an 8th Grade East Coast Trip and so I researched places to eat at Quincy Market before we got there. I read reviews that their lobster rolls and clam chowder were both good and struggled to pick what I wanted until I got there. I saw The Manager's Special; a cold lobster roll, very tasty and not just mayonnaise-flavored lobster, on a perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside bun, plus a cup of their creamy white clam chowder, properly hot as in not going to burn your tongue but warms your soul hot. The students I was with got hot Lobster rolls and clam chowder bowls and even ones that were skeptical about chowder enjoyed it. To add perspective, we're from California and I've had clam chowder from San Francisco and Monterey, so I've had good clam chowder and this is better than both of those places when it comes to quality of the soup. Highly recommend it! The one star off was for service without a smile and hardly more than an acknowledgement of my order and its cost. I opted for the managers special: lobster roll, clam chowder, and a small soda for $22. It's a good deal for a lot of food. The lobster roll was tasty: lobster didn't have too much mayo and the bun was toasted. The clam chowder had a good amount of chunks of clam, not too much potatoes, and the chowder itself wasn't too watery. I hate sourdough bread, so it was a pleasant surprise when I found out the bread bowls from Boston Chowda did not use sourdough. Tastes SO much better. Got my chowda on here. Let me disclaimer that I've been to Pike Place Chowder...If you don't know who they are they're from Seattle and fly to NE for chowder competitions regularly winning them. BC was the second best chowder I've ever had. While the clams were much larger in BC's than PPC there was a slight lack of seasoning that stopped it from taking the number one spot. The flavor was very tasty and the bread bowl portion was substantial. Considering that most things in the market are a bit over priced I think at $9 the bread bowl chowder was a steal. What doesn't make sense to me though was my wife's Vegetarian Corn Chowder in a bread bowl was the same price. Clams should be more than corn. I'd like to try other chowders in the area than compare further. I'll try to return. read more

I don't understand why the hot lobster was $5 more... My impression of the lobster roll was that it tasted good, but it is not light in mayo. So my friend took me here to get the infamous clam chowder soup and lobster bisque while in town and it was... okay LOL. This place is inside Quincy Market so it wasn't too hard to find and the sign is right above the station so it's not too hard to miss. The staff is really friendly and funny but the soup itself was pretty pricey. We got 2 small soups for $10 and it wasn't entirely filling; and the clam chowder was definitely way better than the lobster bisque. Both soups weren't salty which was a good sign; but the lobster bisque is apparently made with tomato soup so it kinda was a bit ... not my style to say the least. The market is lined with food stalls, all of which look very popular. There's also a main dining area in the middle, but the whole place is swarmed with people. Boston Chowda is a small counter and I was unfortunately grouped with a lot of foreign tourists. There wasn't really a line, so you just needed to get to the counter to order. Everything is quick and ready to go, so you're not waiting a long time...just be mindful of large crowds. I always order the larger size of chowder. I was lucky to enjoy my chowder while visiting a lighthouse, so the extra warmth and chunks of potato and clams were welcomed and filling. The lobster roll, as advertised on their sign, was supposed to be on hot buttery brioche. I was disappointed to see that my roll was not hot at all and a bit cold. However, they did stuff it with a bunch of lobster and I did still think it was tasty. The clam chowder was the winner for me in terms of taste. It might have been the best clam chowder I have ever had (and I have tried a lot of clam chowders) and it honestly saved the entire meal for me. 'Tis a late review, but...... Despite their prices, five stars were not enough, to begin with. A trio of us walked miles (and we liked to walk a lot) to check this place out. Twice. I got two things out of it, a lobster pie and lobster rolls. On the first day, I got a lobster pie for 18 bucks because I'd never heard of a lobster pie, so I had to try it. The lobster was perfectly cooked, with all of its softness and pillowy texture as I chewed it. Oh! And the cream of amidst the lobster pieces... I didn't know how to describe it, but then, how could I? I'd never tasted it prior to this. For the lack of better description, it was divine. I only wished for the pie to be significantly larger. With thanks to my incredibly generous girlfriend, I had a tiny nibble of the lobster roll on the other day. It's the second time I had a taste of a roll, and it's far, far better than the one I got from a food truck in Maryland. The bottom of the bread soaked up the garlic-y butter and the lobster was well done! Should I come back for another visit, I would be willing to spend $23 on this one. read more

Despite the name - famous for the chowder, I am more impressed of their lobster pie compared to the lobster chowder.
