After reading a great deal of the reviews here, I've come to the conclusion that people are looking for something Boudin isn't known for. They are known for the best Sourdough in the city--THAT'S IT. It's not a sandwich shop, it's not a pizzaria, it's not a Bagelry and it's not a chowder-house. They do not even specialize in customer service. While they do sell all of those items, It's a bakery that specializes in BREAD. That is the focus! That being said, go there for that--Fantastic, Old-School San Francisco style sourdough. I grew up on the west coast and have had Seattle style sourdough, I lived in Alaska and had Alaskan sourdough, but my favorite has always been SF-Style sourdough, and this bakery does it perfectly. The wonderful, tart fragrance, the perfect crust and the slightly sweet, moist interior is why one goes to Boudin. So, get in line, place your order and get the hell out of the way for the next person. They want great bread as much as you do. On a side note, get an extra loaf and have them slice it for you (free!), save it for the next day and make French Toast out of it, serve with salted butter and real Maple syrup. I've had some good stuff here in the past which is why I decided to treat the family to French Dip Sandwiches. Almost inedible. Supposed to come with cheese, none. Delicious au jous dipping sauce. Ok so we ate the extremely subpar sandwiches and nobody had more than one bite with the dipping sauce. Also before it came with horse radish mayo. Nope. Regular mayo. The cheesy garlic bread was decent but not wonderful like it's been in the past, like a month ago. So I tried calling to let the manager know because if I was a manager there I'd want to know about a meal that was so subpar the the family dogs had a yummy treat. But nooooo... No way to reach them. They don't answer their phone. And no, we did eat the cheesy garlic bread. Yes but it wasn't anything like the same dish from the same location a mere month ago. So that's $60 I'll never get back. This Boudin location in the City's Richmond District is not a bakery café as the ones at the Embarcadero or at Macy's. This location is a bakery but it does have a small shop that has the full offerings of Boudin breads with limited menu offerings. You can't order online at this location. You can get their famous clam chowder in a bread bowl as well as a cheese focaccia and an Italian Classic and a Turkey and Havarti sandwiches. There are some pastry and cookies offering as well. There are a couple of tables outside to enjoy your Boudin goodies. Picked up a loaf of Sweet French today. They will slice it up for you if you want. Though it is not as large and doesn't have all the offerings of a bakery café store, this location offers what Boudin is known for...bread. A neighborhood gem. read more

Boudins at the wharf was milling with thousands of people, so this spot was plan B. Approx 20 min drive from the wharf, but definitely worth it. We got a spot right in front of the shop. We split a clam chowder bread bowl & an Italian sandwich. Picked up three loaves to take home to family members and as a bonus they offered to slice them free. They also have pastry items . We got three cookies to take home for the grands. Ate our soup & sandwich outside at one of the three tables available. Service was fast and with a smile. Will keep this spot in mind when I am in the city and don't want to go to the wharf for a Boudins fix. read more

If you order bread online to be delivered out of state, Unfortunately Boudin does not guarantee delivery. I signed up for the 3 month Holiday club. When I Was told by my daughter that her 3rd installment, Her Christmas bread did not come, I called Customer Service. They said they did their part and to call UPS. I called UPS. They said they had an agreement with Boudin called Shipper Release. That means if UPS shows they delivered (no signature, they can leave nearby) They are not liable. So I called Boudin back. They could only offer to send Another bread if I paid another $20 for shipping !!! I did not do anything wrong. I already paid them $24 for the first loaf I did not receive. Worst ever. I ordered online for 7 people. One of my soup and sandwich combo was missing the soup, and all my combos were missing chips. I could not get them on the phone went straight to voicemail. When I went back to get credit for my soup and chips Alex tells me no chips come with the combos and he wants the half sandwich back to refund my money. I told Alex it was eaten because were starving. He insisted that I need to return later with the sandwich to get refund. Nothing like a piping hot Tomato Soup for me and the Classic Clam Chowder for RL in a Sourdough Bread bowl to warm you up in San Fransisco's chilly weather. Their Sandwiches are pretty lame so steer away. And don't even waste your time or money eating int the Restaurant. Service was awful and RL thought the Clam Chowder tasted different than from downstairs (and not in a good way). Next time I'll probably give the Chili Bread Bowl as it looked pretty tasty. I've been a inner-Richmond resident for over 2 decades now and I honestly, NEVER been to this location (until today). How did that happen will always be a unsolved mystery.. The shop is small and you can only dine outside with their limited tables which is fine but I came here to grab it to-go.
