My go to for fresh bread! They have an amazing variety (more than you can find at their bakery/cafes). And if you didn't know, the prices are slightly cheaper (ie 2lb sourdough is $6.99+SF mandate compared to $7.69 at Stonestown and $4.99 for the 1lb compared to $5.49 at Stonestown). They have more food options too. You can order several types of sandwiches, soup & chowder, salads individual pizzas, plus Papa Steve's larger sized pizzas. Inside is small, and there's no place to sit or eat (inside or out). They used to have some outdoor seating but they went away during Covid lockdown. Service is always quick and efficient. read more

We were excited to try some San Francisco sourdough! We were underwhelmed. This location is super small. We thought there would be some breakfast sandwhiches like with eggs but there was not. We ended up getting a cheese focaccia. They're huge! The bread was well made, crispy on the outside and super soft in the inside. The red sauce and cheese on top were of low quality and had no flavor. Many customers came in and grabbed multiple loaves. I wonder if this is something more for the locals??? I'd suggest having entrees or grab and gos made of sourdough bread for tourists to enjoy. read more

This is a small location located in the Richmond district in San Francisco. Parking is easy with plenty of meters nearby. I have stopped here at multiple occasions when with friends or family who had come for a visit to the Bay Area. I usually stop here to buy bread and some To-Go sandwiches so we can eat them while hiking in the Presidio, the Golden Gate Park or viewing the Golden Gate park which are nearby. This location does not have tables for eating, but they sell lunch items and bread that you can take To-Go. Parking is quite easy, and I have not had issues finding parking on the street. read more

I can't delete the draft review that I started months ago. It was a one star rating. The loaf sour dough bread fell way short for the first time since the 90s. The large round loaf was so light. No chew and bland. I thought I'd go back and try again before I posted a review. It hasn't happened. We've been buying sour dough from artisan bakers now. Great food, great prices, but very bad customer service. This place has changed, and they got rid of all the nice employees that worked here for many years. Me and my sister visited this location today and we wanted some Dutch crunch slices. The lady with the ponytail in the back of her head (cashier) was very rude, obnoxious, didn't answer our questions, threw my sister's change down, and heated up her rolls without telling her. One of my favorite places to get bread when I come out to visit. We just did a quick stop at this location to pick up a bunch of bread to bring back home with us. This is a small place. Not a place to sit down and eat. The guy who helped us was very nice. He sliced all the bread for us and packaged it nicely for us. Such delicious bread and very fresh. I actually got it a week before coming home and it's still very fresh. There is some parking on the street. It was pretty quiet in there. Most likely because it is a very small place. DO NOT order the Caesar salad at this Boudin. They only use the bottom part of the romaine lettuce, and the edges have turned brown.There are no green leafy romaine lettuce. I think they save the green leafy part for the sandwiches and put the white bottom part in salads. Plus, they don't use sourdough croutons, but the cheap packaged kind. Pizza is 0/5 The pizza was absolutely terrible. You can see in the first photo the dough is flat and has zero aeration except for the crust. It was like I was crewing on leather. Hubs had the Boudin Fisherman's Wharf location in his radar specifically for the clam chowder Sourdough Bowl way before we came to SF. But after doing a quick drive through that mess, I wanted to get the f*uck outta there quick. So we ventured out to this Boudin in the Richmond district in hopes of hubs getting his clam chowder bowl. Well...turns out, this Boudin ran out! So his next best thing was a sourdough sandwich with the works- which he enjoyed a lot. My daughter and I had a Lettuce/Tomato/Avocado/Onion sandwich each. Odd but I'll take it- because the veggies were fresh. And while the bread was also fresh, they tried to pull off a sandwich and wasn't a fan of the dough's thickness. Crust was nice, but the inside is too thick and only ate 1/2 while the kid ate all hers. Good try though. Moral of the story? Call in advance for Clam Chowder Bowl availability. read more

I am so loving this Boudin Bakery location. It is a wonderful establishment here in the Richmond District. Okay, this location may be on the small side. The menu items were also very limited. Most customers here order their food to go. There is still some seating right outside, so that is good especially if you want to enjoy your food. Suddenly had a craving for turkey sandwich. I came in and ordered the turkey havarti on sourdough baguette with a can of coke. The sandwich was so delicious, I finished it all in one sitting. As I was eating my sandwich, I noticed the sourdough baguette had kind of a hard texture to it. But this hard texture does give the bread that crunchy taste. I enjoyed every bite of this sandwich. Their sourdough bread is so good that I am tempted to get a loaf of it. The food here is always delicious, staff members are friendly and service is excellent. Overall I'm disappointed in their food selection , and wouldn't go back for it (but again I'd go back for their bread). I was really excited to try their pizza which they boasted about with their special sourdough crust, but was really underwhelmed. It was a super small pizza (the pictures were misleading!). I had nostalgia when I ate this pizza, but not in a good way as it reminded me of the cardboard taste of middle school cafeteria pizza. I flexed my "let me tell you all about sourdough" muscles pretty hard not too long ago when I got all science-y about it in another review. To save you the pain of having to go through that again, I'll just sum it up thusly: it's not just your imagination, sourdough really does taste different in San Francisco. It's science. While there are many other contenders for birthing the bread nouveau movement of the last few decades that are based in the Bay, that's not Boudin's trophy. But arguably, when it comes to that tangy sourdough bite, they may very well be the name. The big one. The most well-known slinger of sourdough. While the airport is packed with their stuff, and the waterfront has the massive spectacle of the flagship bakery location, I'm actually quite fond of this one on 10th. It's the peoples' Boudin. The Inner Richmond locale. The "stop by on the way home for a loaf" location. The "let's duck in for a soup bowl" stop. For me, it's been a go-to for years. Usually, it's when I'm on the way out of the city and I want to grab some bread as a gift for special people back at home. Nothing says you care like a loaf of bead, so when you tote a loaf of sourdough on the plane, you must really really care about the person it's going to. I'm a fan of the simple rounds, so if you can get through a big one, great. If not, they do have a smaller loaf. They also have the festive ones--holiday shapes, crabs, turkeys, or whatever. That's sort of a bonus feature and novelty, as they're good but never as good as the normal boule. Remember that this is a neighborhood shop, and it's not one of their new cafes. It's first and foremost a bakery where you drop in for a loaf of bread, and secondly, a very limited lunch spot that's pretty much just bread and soup/chowder. That's the charm, really. They've upgrades their food ordering system to use kiosks but real people are always available to help and take your order. They've got a system so if you just order soup it will come out almost before you make your way from the cashier to the pick up counter. They also have a good choice of half bottles of wine that don't require a cork screw, prosciutto and cheese so you can round out you meal. If you opt for take out instead of dine-in (there's a cafeteria-style operation adjacent to their full-service bat and restaurant), they separate the bread bowl from the soup. This give you the added option to pour the soup in the bread bowl (as they would for dine-in) or tear pieces of sourdough and eat your chowder out of the container. This last option allows you to eat all the bread at it's chewy best. When we sat outside to eat, staff cleaning up was classy and much more attentive than you'd expect for outside service. read more

I think the last time I visited Boudin Bakery I had sideburns and rode up on my vintage Lambretta affectionately named "Mrs. Robinson" lol. Of course, college money was tight, yet I recall we always had enough sixpence for Sourdough Bread! Boudin Bakery here seems small because what the typical visitor sees is only the front counter part, yet this is the main bakery for all of Boudin. It's not as crowded and touristy as the Fisherman's Wharf location - which is great if you want that "Bistro" experience. For me, I like the location on 10th Ave. because of how quiet it is, virtually no tourists, with the occasional San Franciscan dropping in. On my last visit I ordered a warm Bagel (ginormous, btw) with a pat of butter! Mmm! I've also had the Turkey Cranberry Sandwich and my share of the famous Clam Chowder. Boudin Bakery offers other baked goods and seasonal stuffs too! Boudin Bakery is world known for its sourdough bread trademarked as "The Original San Francisco Sourdough". *Founded in 1849 by Isidore Boudin, son of a family of master bakers from France, by blending the sourdough prevalent among miners in the Gold Rush of 1849 with French baking techniques. The Boudin Bakery is San Francisco's oldest continuously operating business* (source: Wikipedia). Amazingly the bread you eat today is started by the yeast-bacteria culture it developed during the California Gold Rush of 1849. So yes, you're eating history and something 170-years old! In the end, I recommend Boudin Bakery to all. Today, it's convenient where you can even purchase it at Macy's in San Francisco, or get the full "bistro" experience at Fisherman's Wharf. After reading a great deal of the reviews here, I've come to the conclusion that people are looking for something Boudin isn't known for. They are known for the best Sourdough in the city--THAT'S IT. It's not a sandwich shop, it's not a pizzaria, it's not a Bagelry and it's not a chowder-house. They do not even specialize in customer service. While they do sell all of those items, It's a bakery that specializes in BREAD. That is the focus! That being said, go there for that--Fantastic, Old-School San Francisco style sourdough. I grew up on the west coast and have had Seattle style sourdough, I lived in Alaska and had Alaskan sourdough, but my favorite has always been SF-Style sourdough, and this bakery does it perfectly. The wonderful, tart fragrance, the perfect crust and the slightly sweet, moist interior is why one goes to Boudin. So, get in line, place your order and get the hell out of the way for the next person. They want great bread as much as you do. On a side note, get an extra loaf and have them slice it for you (free!), save it for the next day and make French Toast out of it, serve with salted butter and real Maple syrup. I've had some good stuff here in the past which is why I decided to treat the family to French Dip Sandwiches. Almost inedible. Supposed to come with cheese, none. Delicious au jous dipping sauce. Ok so we ate the extremely subpar sandwiches and nobody had more than one bite with the dipping sauce. Also before it came with horse radish mayo. Nope. Regular mayo. The cheesy garlic bread was decent but not wonderful like it's been in the past, like a month ago. So I tried calling to let the manager know because if I was a manager there I'd want to know about a meal that was so subpar the the family dogs had a yummy treat. But nooooo... No way to reach them. They don't answer their phone. And no, we did eat the cheesy garlic bread. Yes but it wasn't anything like the same dish from the same location a mere month ago. So that's $60 I'll never get back.
