My first time at this place and it's so clean and welcoming. I came in to get a kids clam chowder and it came with a fish bread, cookie ( I didn't get even though I asked for white chocolate macadamia nut cookie), and a drink! The store manager was very accommodating as I told him I couldn't drink soda as I had a stomach surgery done. The soup was very delicious and the fish bread was a sourdough bread shaped into a fish with a raisin eyeball. Everything was so delicious as the weather today was definitely a soup kind of day! Boudin San Francisco sourdough bread is delicious and freshly baked each day. The crust is pleasantly chewy and the bread is soft and very flavorful. Highly recommended! I use the bread for sandwiches; and regularly qualify for a free loaf of sourdough bread, with the Boudin Loyalty Rewards card. Con: I deducted 1 star because parking is challenging and becomes very congested during busy times of the day. If I cannot find a parking space, I cannot buy the bread. If you have never been to a Bodin SFs, its something like Corner Bakery or Panera Bread. They serve soups, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and bread. And they are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can get their soups in bread bowl for one dollar extra. All of their breads are absolutely delicious and fresh. I usually get their Thai Citrus Chicken Salad which is so healthy and yummy --just a little pricey, but it is a huge portion. They also have fresh brewed organic coffee and hot tea. This location gets crowded during lunch time because it is located in a very businessy area. Try to go either earlier or later if you can. It is pretty empty after 7:30 pm, though. And I usually use the parking structure, because there is almost no parking esp with the souplantation and a hotel being there. And I just learned that their paper and plastic dishes and cutleries are made of eco-friendly materials which are recyclable, compost-able, and free of dyes and ink which I think is a big plus. And they do catering, too. Try their fresh fruit tray or San Francisco Treats. Also, get their free membership card and they give a big loaf of bread and a couple of other things? for free based on your points. Oh yes...nom nom nom... the only possible sound one should hear when freshly baked sourdough bread is being consumed. I absolutely LOVE Boudin SF...and this location is by far my favorite because the menu is more extensive than the South Coast location. Mere minutes from my office, if I'm craving a Caesar salad with grilled salmon, this is my go to spot. Not only is it fairly inexpensive, but everything is fresh and delicious. They also have an awesome Salmon Club sandwich - Norwegian salmon, crisp Applewood smoked bacon, tomato, and pesto mayo served on their yummy sourdough bread...it comes with chips or salad greens. I always opt for greens because the sandwich is rich and it compliments nicely. The only drag about this location is parking... because it shares a lot with Souplantation (really, people?) and a few other little eateries. It's always best to go before 11:30am or after 1pm. A couple of a good buddies of mine work right near this place so my friend and I came down to irvinen to visit them for lunch. Think of this place like a panera bread but with a really good clam chowder. We always like coming here for lunch because they havet his half sandwich and half soup combo for lunch for only 7 bucks. add only 50 cents though, and you can change your soup from a small bowl of soup to having a bread bowl of soup. considering that this place originated in san francisco, the best soup to get here is hands down the clam chowder. i personally got the turkey havarti for the half sandwich and then of course i got the clam chowder in the bread bowl. now i dont claim to say the clam chowder here is as good as the clam chowder up in SF, but the clam chowder is pretty darn good. perfect consistency and the sourdough bread of course goes so well with the taste of teh clam chowder. its got enough clams in it as well to make it good. overall, if ure craving a good lunch at a good price, this is the place to come i think. esp. if u work around this area of irvine. read more

I used to work nearby and would come here often. I was in the area (and starving) and decided to pop in to relive some of my old faves. First, there are so many good things on the menu that it's hard to choose. I mean you have the turkey and havarti that comes with cranberry sauce, the salads are delicious, and the clam chowder. Duh, the clam chowder. On this trip I got some clam chowder in a bread bowl (cuz, why not?) and a cobb salad with no egg or bacon. Well, at least I ordered it with no egg or bacon.When I got home and opened it there was definitely egg and bacon on it. Also, there was no salad dressing. After I picked the eggs and bacon out I had to fish through my fridge for some salad dressing. Also, the clam chowder wasn't what I remember. However, in a world of Corner Bakery Cafes and Paneras, how does Boudin SF stand out? It sells gourmet sandwiches and soups just like the other two, so what has people craving this place? Its really just the clam chowder. Sandwiches are good.... I just got an Italian melt the other day; essentially its a baked Italian BMT at Subway with a few more spices. Not bad, but for a price of that amount ($7), why not get subway? Mood is more stylish than Corner and Panera; the place is a moody, sleek, black interior with open exhibition windows where can watch people bake the bread. The place has a sexier, classier appeal to me; I enjoy sitting here, eating, reading books, feeling artsy. But yet it comes down to the comfort of a clam chowder, knowing its always there. A warm chowder in a bread bowl with lots of pepper.... nothing so satisfying as that. Signature dish. However, pet peeve I have is why are there like only three Boudin in all of Orange County, and they all happened to be located in the same area, South Coast and a little south of South Coast. Every time the weather is cold or rainy, I crave Boudin. Their soups in bread bowls always hit the spot! Usually, I get the combo that includes a soup in a bread bowl and a salad for only 8/9 dollars. Personally, I like clam chowder the best. Their chili is pretty good too. And all of their salads are delicious and fresh!! My fav is the chicken waldorf salad. Boudin is supposed to be known for its bread. So all of their sandwiches should be good. And I've never had anything bad here so I believe it. They used to have a salmon club that was amazing but they change their menu every so often and they took it off. :( But I've also tried the chicken salad and the brie, apple, and fig jam sandwiches. YUM. They have a whole selection of different kinds of grilled cheeses, and they all look yummy. The brie, apple, and fig jam is good if you like sweet stuff. I already know that next time I come back I want to try another one of their grilled cheeses with a side of tomato soup. Terrible. I'm not sure if Irviners just don't know how to rate properly or what, but this place a long with a few others that were highly rated were one of the worst places I have ever been to. The clam chowder was not a bright white color like the pictures, but what does it matter if it's tasty right? Well, it was not. It tasted like regular canned clam chowder. I had better clam chowder at BJ's. There was barely any chunks of potatoes and the entire soup was just lacking in flavor. The bread is way too crispy on the outside, I could barely bite into the italian sandwich. I also tried the baguette burger....not sure if they don't season their food or they just forgot the salt, but it tasted like ...nothing. There was no mayo no ketchup, I just don't understand the high ratings. It just seems like a hipster-ish type of place. I would not recommend this place to anyone, ever. read more

The VERY first time I came here with my best friend, we were completely blown away. The clam chowder bread bowl was amazing, the grilled cheese with a cup of rustic tomato soup was delicious, and the service was phenomenal -- we even got free bread! However, every following visit thereafter loss some quality to the experience.. food took a lot longer to get.. and the grilled cheese just wasn't as greasy and cheesy as before (this is a bad thing). The first thing you'll notice is the bread animals. Boudin SF makes loaves in the shape of friggin' animals! This alone gives you a star. (I'm half-serious but come on - it's bread animals!) Once the wonder of that washes over you, you will then move on to the food itself (probably). The girlfriend and I each got a Clam Chowder Bread Bowl, as well as a White Chocolate Macadamia cookie and a Chocolate Chip scone, respectively. Since we got it to-go, they unceremoniously put the bread bowl in a brown bag along with the soup in its own container. It was a little disappointing to look at, but it does keep the bread from getting soggy (unless that wasn't the point - in which case, you owe me for that save, Boudin SF!). Their chowder is very tasty, creamy but not too thick, and the sourdough bread is good on its own. She and I both thought our respective desserts were top-notch. The woman at the counter recommended the scone and her suggestion was thankfully on point. Its texture hits a sweet spot between crisp and soft. The place itself is very much like Panera and the like (or maybe it's vice versa): very neat and old-fashioned, all welcoming. I've lived within 1.5 miles of this place for a few years now and I finally decided to try it. Now, they serve similar items like a Panera or Corner Bakery but their big thing (I believe) is the bread bowls (which I still haven't tried) but what I did get was pretty good nonetheless. Sunday around brunch time I was with mother and we stood there for about 10 minutes staring at the menu trying to decide. After the staring contest (which I won), I decided to go with the Roasted Cremini Mushroom & Swiss Baguette Burger and chips. Mother got the Asian Chicken Salad. We talked a good bit while eating but I didn't hear any complaints from here regarding her meal and mine was pretty tasty. On the menu they said they use "California grown natural angus USDA certified beef" and I believe it. You can taste the difference in the quality of the beef they serve you especially if you eaten some inferior beef before. Then it's just good toppings, arugula and mushrooms and cheese... they all come together quite nicely. Opted for the chips, something like this you need some kind of potato... crunchy ones at that. Everything thing else is pretty standard. Clean place, fairly spacious. Hold a small meeting or pop in the earbuds and zone out all by yourself. I believe they have wi-fi (didn't check). Boudin is definitely a great place to get a quick lunch, with excellent portions and a good variety to choose from. I came here with my family, and we decided to get the half/half combos. There were a ton you could choose from, from sandwiches, salads, and soups. I got the Garlic Tomato Soup with the Waldorf Salad. Garlic Tomato soup: tasted more creamy than their rustic tomato. I feel like the rustic tomato soup had more of a sour taste rather than creamy. The garlic tomato soup reminded me more of tomato bisque. This is only a Saturday special, or at least when I went, so they don't always have this! Waldorf Salad: pretty good. there were cranberries, chicken, mozzarella cheese, and pecans. A nice and light salad to go with a bread bowl of delicious soup. I absolutely love cranberries to go in my salad! The chicken was a nice touch to the rest of the salad, and added the protein needed to complete the meal. The pecans were nice and crunchy, but still soft enough to be easily bitten into! Overall, a great place to grab a nice, quick lunch. It has a Corner Bakery style feel to it, and I kind of love that. It's great because there are people who serve and bring your food out to you, but also is kind of like a quick ordering style too. I will be back, Boudin! read more

I am in love with Boudin's Ham and Brie Sandwich. Soo good! A pretty simple sandwich but it all comes together so perfectly. The Rosemary ham, the creamy brie cheese, the dried cranberries on sourdough - so yummy! I don't typically like dried cranberries, but the taste and flavors all mix together so perfectly that I don't dare change or substitute a thing. I will typically order the half sandwich with half soup. If you're going to get soup, you have to get it in the bread bowl (it's worth the calories). The bread is so fresh - warm, soft, chewy and goes so well with their soups, especially the clam chowder. Counter, order, seat yourselves and get your own drink. The outdoor seating on a Sunday mid-morning was not too noisy, so that's also a plus. I got the Havarti/Brie with apples and fig jam on multigrain bread. DELICIOUS. Veggie friendly, not too sweet....heavenly. I also got the butternut squash soup (instead of tomato) on the side and it was a delicious soup. I would definitely order both of these again, without a doubt. Boudin lives up to its reputation. I can't believe that I've never eaten here before, after knowing the brand and hearing the praise for so long. I got the rustic tomato soup in a bread bowl and the chipotle chicken sandwich. The bread bowl was fantastic. The sourdough is soft, tangy, and stretchy. With some butter slathered on the hollowed out top, and then dipped into the soup, I was in heaven. The soup itself was pretty creamy and sweet, and definitely had that "homey" quality that you always want soup to have. I mean, my mom never made tomato soup when I was growing up, but I imagine it'd taste like Boudin's if she did. The sandwich was terrific, with the fillings providing good crunch and tang from the pickled onions. The chipotle aioli was smoky, a tiny bit spicy, but very rich and creamy. It blended perfectly with the other components between two perfect pieces of bread. Also, this place just looks really nice inside. Rich, dark woods and a clean space for eating. You can see the bread-making machines at work and pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge on every wall. It's a very spacious and pleasant dining room. It's about time I tried Boudin. It's now going to be a staple in my go-to places around Irvine. read more

As you would expect with a place with a reputation for San Francisco sourdough bread and clam chowder - both are excellent here. This location provides a good option amongst the other lunch spots in the area. I personally give this place a gold star for being able to walk here and get a good, tasty lunch. I usually opt for the half sandwich and soup combo or occasionally just the full sandwich. The Chicken Pesto sandwich on the sourdough roll is amazing. I truly think its one of my favorite restaurant sandwiches and the bread is the part that takes it to the next level. On a side note, the chains that have popped up to provide you with a good San Francisco treat outside of there is a cool option. However, if you've been to Fishermen's Wharf in San Francisco, you'd know that there are better options out there, especially from the smaller hole in the wall spots along the streets. This place is great. I'm a huge fan of Panera Bread and always have been of their bread bowls growing up. Boudin SF is a true competitor. I think it just might be slightly better than Panera Bread for a couple of reasons. Their clam chowder is intensely good! When it is served, it looks fairly plain and simple, like any other ordinary clam chowder, however theirs is especially flavorful, creamy, and is also mildly spicy. I think the light spiciness really hit home. With my soup I had a half sandwich of Chicken Chipotle Aioli (sp?) on artisan bread. Wow they really know how to make their bread! Their chipotle sauce with fresh avocado and tomato was really great. To top off my experience, I asked which sandwiches were included in the soup and half salad combo, he pointed out that only the cold sandwiches were allowed. However, he offered to toast it. They apparently don't know how to cancel online orders and pretend they don't have the customer service number to do so either and they wait and delay you until the food has been made and it's too late to cancel apparently. Go to south coast this is not the location you want to deal with. Had to speak to grub hub and when grub hub did cancel the restaurant did not let them!!!! They're so hungry for orders that they delay the time to cancel and go ahead and make your order anyways when I called them to tell them cancel and then had to call grub hub so instead of helping me putting my order on hold they made it anyway making it impossible to cancel.
