(3.5 stars) Being born and raised in San Francisco, I frequented Boudin SF very often growing up. I always get one thing: their clam chowder bowl. Upon moving to the Sacramento area for school, I haven't been to a Boudin in a couple of years because there aren't too many in the area. So I was very excited in coming here today because I was craving a clam chowder bowl! I was very impressed with how much seating this place has! We had just beat the dinner rush by 15 minutes, so there were plenty of seats to choose from. There were a few places I wanted to sit at but when I arrived at the table, I saw that there were still plates of food left by the previous patrons. They remained there the whole time while I was there too! I'm not too sure if you bus your own tables at this locations (as you do in the SF locations) as I didn't see any indicator that you should (ie: a trash area with a place to put the tray on top). There also weren't any napkin dispensers anywhere to be seen, so I had to go up and ask for some. As I said earlier, I ordered a clam chowder bowl. The soup wasn't hot. More of a lukewarm. The bread bowl wasn't filled all the way and this was a first because every time I've been to a Boudin, the soup has always been filled to the top or at least close to the top. With my portion, you could tell I was missing quite a bit of soup. The bread however was phenomenal! Way better than any of the SF locations I've been to. It was warm and soft, not crunchy, hard, and slightly over-baked like what I'm used to receiving in SF. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I eat there often and like it (recent renovations are attractive)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], but yesterday I ordered a sandwich for pickup and learned that Boudin's is now using a pickup/delivery service called Olo. I had never heard of it before. I opted not to create an Olo account for my transaction and picked it up without incident. But today I received an email congratulating me on my new Olo account. In the course of efforts to figure out how to get rid of it I found videos on the subject and other complaints from people who also had Olo accounts foisted on them. Five Guys was mentioned as another company that uses them. The Olo issue will reduce the orders I place by phone at restaurants that use it. I don't want to have to go through the hassle of deleting an Olo account every time I place an online order. read more

This is a pretty nice place to grab some freshly made sandwiches and of course their famous bread. Be sure to sign up for their bread club and you will get a free loaf of sourdough bread monthly. The restaurant is super clean and comfortable,and we like to sit in the booth area on the far end near the beverage area. Sandwiches are super yummy with innovative new sandwiches added frequently. Today I chose the jalepeno pulled pork sandwich on sourdough bread of course. the jalapeno was baked into the bread and the pulled pork was cooked excellent, with nice meat and void of the fatty section. Melty cheese and a jam really made a nice contrast with this sandwich, which was excellent. The Chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich was also good, with generous portions of chicken and bacon, and avocado. We also made sure to get a few almond croissants and several sourdough loafs for take home. Be sure to have them cut the bread for you, as it makes it soo much easier when you get home. Although we didn't get the chowder or chowder sourdough bowl this time, that has always been their signature dish, and it has always been excellent. I was craving good soup and since I'd had a poor recent experience at a Panera in the area, I wasn't exactly ready to give Panera another chance. Boudin had fallen off my radar through the years but I remembered the soup being tasty. Since it was nearing closing time, I headed over to Boudin versus ordering online. After reviewing the menu, I decided on soup and sandwich combos-- tomato soup with french dip deluxe and butternut squash soup with the regular french dip. It was a cool, rainy day, so the soup had been really popular and they were out of the butternut squash soup, so I just went with tomato but then texted my husband to let him know. He said the beef chili sounded good, so I asked the team member preparing the order if it was too late to change one of the tomato soups to the chili... she happily obliged and said it was no problem at all. She packed all the the items with care to ensure no ripped bag or any spilled items. Both my husband and I loved our soup and sandwich choices. The sourdough is really incredible and fresh... perfect comfort food! Interested in trying the pizza sometime although soup/sandwich will likely be my go-to. Die-hard Yelpers write reviews as much for other Yelpers as they do for the public. Just so you all know what veteran Yelpers, like myself, think. For those who use the Yelp App, there is a feature that allows you to "Check-In" to a store, restaurant, business, etcetera . . . perhaps you know about this. I promise I'll get to Boudin SF, bear with me. If you check-in many times, you might become a "duke" or person with the most check-ins. It is basically a game built into the Yelp App. Today, some Yelp Elite member took this game too far, with Boudin SF as an innocent bystander. I recently moved nearby to this restaurant and am able to utilize my Boudin Loyalty Rewards Card more often now. But, I had only checked into this Boudin seven times since moving. Yet, I have gone frequently in the past week, including yesterday. Earlier today, a Yelp Elite who shall go unnamed, checked into Boudin SF. She has over a hundred "dukedoms" and it takes dozens of check-ins a day to maintain that many game winning positions. Unfortunately, I checked into Boudin SF shortly after she did, unbeknownst to me that she just had. She accused me of fraudulently checking-in purposely to take away her duke status at this restaurant. In her private Yelp message to me she stated, "Nothing worse than a yelper who checks in just for the dukes." Actually, I did not see her there when I picked up my delicious grilled cheese & bacon sandwich. Like I said, it takes up to the maximum 25 check-ins per day to maintain the 126 dukedoms she currently has (it is all temporary anyway). It is physically and probably financially improbable that one person can or will shop or eat at 25 different places in a day---unless they make fraudulent check-ins. This person believes that this juvenile game is so important, that she was willing to interrogate me about it, then attack me for supposedly doing something that, in all likelihood, she does herself every day. To me, there is nothing worse than an ignorant human being who dishes out cruelty just because s/he can. Well, I did go to Boudin SF today---for the eighth time in seven weeks. And, I received $3 off my Grilled Cheese & Bacon Sandwich and Chicken Salad Sandwich order. $3 off because of my Boudin Loyalty Rewards points I earned because I come here often. Every type of sandwich here is really delicious and sourdough bread is my favorite! Try their new Millionaire's BLTA, which is my usual selection. Each sandwich comes with either a mini-salad or a small bag of Kettle chips. Normally, I buy a bowl of the Soup of the Day too. I have to make many more visits before I try everything on the menu . . . but, I will eventually. The people who work here have treated me very nicely. I can be sensitive, so I especially appreciate that they remember me when I walk in, and even compliment me on my various Beatles T-shirts. I've only gone for lunch or dinner so far. Got food poisoning from their French Dip Deluxe on 4/7/23, went to the ER due to symptoms! Won't ever eat there again!! Due to this yelp review someone from their office in San Francisco reached out to me to ask questions regarding my symptoms. I explained and was asked what I ate the day before and told that food poisoning doesn't usually happen until 12-24 hours after consumption. I basically got the impression they didn't think I got food poisoning from their establishment by comments made that the Sacramento location is the cleanest location they have. I mentioned it could have been the mayonnaise and he proceeded to tell me that it couldn't be that because their mayonnaise has preservatives in it!!! Mayonnaise can go rancid if left out too long and preservatives won't help that!!! I work in healthcare and you can start getting food poisoning symptoms as early as 30 minutes after digestion and the ER did a full work up on me and I also followed up with my primary doctor who confirmed it was food poisoning! I really really love it here. I ordered a Turkey Avocado Sandwich with a side salad. The Side Salad came with a Balsamic dressing. They had the San Pellegrino Blood Orange and so we ordered that too. Went well with my food. The workers there were extremely nice and patient. I never really knew how to order since it was my first time here. So they were really nice to just wait for me. It wasnt that crowded at the time. We took it to go and ate it at home. Every taste was delicious. The bread was so fresh and so was the salad was nice and crisp. Not the SF Boudin. Very 'Panera' like. Corporate feel inside, standardized menu options. Don't get me wrong the bread is still great. But basically it is a quick lunch or small meal place to get quality salads, soups, and sandwiches. The positives outweigh the negatives. However not by much. I tend to like mom/pop shops. Boudin definitely has a large corporate feel. Like if you walked in you could be in any major metro city in the US. Probs their goal. The food is definitely good enough to do that. Everything was standardized and quality. The service was friendly and quick. The food tasted fresh and the bread was soft and flavorful. I think I was just expecting more of an unique experience not a cookie cuter one. That's on me. If you want a Panera experience that isn't Panera then this is your place. They forgot our cookies and I've tried calling about 15 times and no answer, it'll keep ringing and ringing. Also my sandwich was on the wrong bread and no one asked me if they could switch it. Our clam chowder we ordered was only filled up half way. The next time we go in i will show them my review so they can give me my cookies that they owe me. Bread bowls were good as always. It was an uncommonly cold and windy spring Sunday and I developed an insatiable hankering for clam chowder, complete with a sourdough bowl. I asked around for recommendations and Boudin was the order of the day. I called the cafe to make sure there was chowder left and to hopefully not offend by asking whether or not the chowder was made in-house of out of a can (I am serious about chowder!). A sweet young lady named Miriam answered the phone, who to my delight shared the chowder was made in-house. When I arrived, Isabella took my order and literally less than three minutes I was heading back to the car with a bag o goodness. The bread bowl was fresh (would have loved it to be more sour) and served with butter. The chowder was hot, creamy, and felt like a warm blanket on a cold night. My last visit to Boudin was one of many. I joined it's rewards club years ago and frequently take advantage of it's offers. My reward this month was a free loaf of bread! I've always enjoyed their clam chowder and breads. The clam chowder in a bread bowl is a hearty and delicious meal. They also make some unique sandwiches with ingredients like avocado. Boudin has a lot of variety in its menu. I recently tried their cinnamon bread and was impressed with it's flavor. Its a tasty pastry! My hubby recently ordered their steak sandwich and it was super dry. Just be smart and stick to a bowl of chowder, after all it is what they're known for. They have plenty of tables available for dine in and a few tables for outdoor dining during the summer. You can order at the counter and have a seat as they will bring your food order to you. We first asked if they're still taking orders and one female employee(long blonde hair in a ponytail, Caucasian) said no. However this other male employee looked at her and said they are taking orders bc they're technically not yet closed. We overlooked that female employee's rudeness. 2. Anyway, we ask for our order to-go since they're about to close. But we saw another couple eating there w a lot of food still left so we asked the same female employee if we can still sit and eat there. After coming home, I see they prepared my turkey cranberry sandwich is a very sloppy manner. See picture. The first half was loaded with onions, and very little cranberry. Boudin's on Fair Oaks was fairly busy. The "stew" options looked fantastic...emphasis on the "looked" part. I ordered the Andouille Sausage and Shrimp stew bread bowl. I was hungry and this looked like the meal for the job. Let me tell you, when the server brought out the meal, I was shocked and disappointed. It didn't look comparable to the advertisements all over the restaurant! When I dug in, I discovered that the sausage was sliced thin, like deli meat. And the shrimp, it was comical. Have you had all you can eat shrimp and the shrimps are the size of a dime? Little popcorn size shrimp. Well, there was a whopping six dinky shrimps in this bread bowl...lol. For $10 not very satisfying. So, I hopped next door at Smashburger and for $6 had a smashburger and sweet potato fries. I'm not hungry anymore...lol. 01/06/2018 - Update. The front entrance is like an aisle of Carb porn! Not sure what a Yelper's etiquette is for yelping a place while sick? Here goes nothing... So, I've avoided this place like the plague since a few good hearted attempts when it first opened. We tried the famous crab-something (sandwich or melt, I think), mac n cheese, etc. - but every time I ate here I left like a salt bomb exploded inside me. Everything was salty, no me gusta! I was hesitant to go, but I told my friend to pick, so here I was. Baller on a budget - we rocked some coupons she had. I was able to get 2 sandos, a bowl of soup, and a treat for $13, not too shabby. I ordered The Great with Bacon and added a bowl of their garlic tomato soup. I'm guessing my congestion absorbed all the saltiness or they are scaling back, but everything tasted normal. My Grilled Cheese with bacon was delightful, plenty of bacon (which is always a plus in my book), good blend of cheese, and the bread wasn't too sourdough tasting, and they did the melt cheese on the outside of the bread. Perfect ratio of crunchy bread to stringy cheese bite. I also got the side of chips, just typical bag of plain "salty" chips. The soup had really good flavor, the texture of their tomatoes was a little creepy - I think they were sun dried tomatoes but soggy...I wasn't too sure :/ My what was supposed to be my commuters breakfast treat, became a half eaten desert: their Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin. This little guy was pretty delectable. The muffin top (hahaha) was crispy around the edges with sugar gems all over the top. It was dense and moist, and the lemon flavoring wasn't overbearing. It was tasty, overall, but man it was greasy/buttery - I have the paper bag to prove it! Overall, I can't really hate on them anymore. Definitely one of the better customer service experiences I've had in a while. On the downside, the food was a little cold. I ordered the combo half a classic burger on a sourdough baguette and clam chowder. First of all I saw my order sitting there complete for almost ten minutes and they just left it sit there while they helped other people. Once I got the burger it was on the new bun they have which I do not care for. That's why I got it on the baguette. The bun was burnt and the patty was three separate pieces of meat. Love Boudins chain out of all the restaurants this location is probably the least one I'd recommend I usually order the same thing and it's hard to mess up a grilled cheese but they undercooked it the bread was barely crisp. And when I asked for the pepper grinder they denied me. The only reason I ordered the soup was to add pepper to it. So no tomato soup for me either. I get the COVID protocols but the Roseville location is much better with hospitality and helpfulness. The employee handling the online orders (white, short-haired) female was very petty, rude and unprofessional. She's the equivalent of Resting B-Face. I go by my middle name but account is under my first name. I mistakenly gave my middle name when checking in and when I realized my mistake it almost caused her to have a stroke. The common corporate bait-and-switch lie. Recently, I visited this BoudinSF location to try their Chicken Basil Bisque soup option showing on their online menu as available on Wednesday and Sunday. The store employee taking my order said the soup is a seasonal option and now unavailable. After my visit, I inquired about the soup option's advertising-availability mismatch using the company website contact link. I received a response from the "Area Director Central Valley" (name withheld), who apologized and sent me a $30 gift card. Many days since, Boudin has decided to leave the unavailable soup on its website still showing as available. This obvious falsehood has a common corporate interest of drawing more business at the expense of those lured to make alternative decisions. Honesty and accuracy matter to me. Bait-and-switch lies dismiss the value of a customer's time, efforts and money. This is absolutely my favorite bakery. As a customer for years, I simply call when something is simple as the pizza bruschetta was missing basil- a key ingredient. I indicated that I had ordered via doordash . Unfortunately, the employee thought it was more about the refund than about my hope that button would not become cureless and maintain the same quality that I have expected and enjoyed for years. When I resided in Berkeley California, I would drive to San francisto eat at Boudin's bakery. Yes I relocated to Oak Grove California, I eas thrilled to learn that there was one in the art area on Fair Oaks boulevard. Before covid 19, I would take the drive from Oak Grove to the Orange area. Was covid struck, I was again thrilled to find Boudin Bakery on on doordash. I wanted this wonderful establishment to understand that it wasn't about the disappointment of an entity that has always been reliable and available to me a loyal customer. I hope someone will respond. More importantly, I hope someone will pass this message on to the employees that make this possible and also answer the phone. Do not get careless like most other places. Ordered thru GrubHub. Delivery on time, but restaurant sent incomplete order. When notified of the issue, they refused to remedy the issue and refunded the order instead. That didn't resolve the sandwich which was not up to the standards of Boudin. Dissatisfied. read more

Sometimes you crave the Bay experience but lack the time to take the drive to get it - so Boudin is your place to go for that classic Boudin experience that gives you a little Bay area, right here in Sacramento. I have always been a Boudin fan, but unfortunately, this location missed the mark. I ordered the sandwich/soup combo and got my favorite, clam chowder in a bread bowl. No doubt, always the best thing to get and I was not disappointed. Sadly, the sandwich was almost impossible to eat. That's not an exaggeration, it was like chewing apart a dog bone to take bites. I left unsatisfied with a sore jaw, and not much of that nostalgic feeling met. Service was fine and the location isn't too bad, in fact, there are plenty of cool places around. I've never had a bad experience with this place. Everyone is always friendly and helpful. My grandpa loves the Chilli! I usually get the tuna salad sandwich. The only thing I don't like is that the price went up twice since I first started going there. I go less now cause it gets pricy. The free monthly bread is a nice touch though. ****Update ***** Had to remove two stars...my favorite sandwich had hardly any of the salad on it. Mostly just bread and the tomato and onion I asked for. Reached out to corporate and they pretty much were like oh well. Well guess I won't be giving them my money anymore...not trying to get ripped off and then be told pretty much oh well by the non-response...good thing they got plenty other good options that have never failed me in the same shopping plaza!!
