The Boulevard Cafe...great food, great staff. They listen to suggestions! They have made changes on their menu...thru the months, to fit what the people who eat there, want to eat! I feel like the female Norm, entering Cheers...no, they are not all drunk, but everybody knows my name. And I theirs. They get to know their regular customers, and make them feel very comfortable and cared for. New customers, are not new, for long. The food is tasty and plentiful! Boulevard does what Denny's intends to. I come here when I don't want to think too hard about what to eat and I don't want to wait very long for it either. There is a large variety to choose from, including some nods to the Greek owners with some Mediterranean dishes. I was there the night before they rolled out the new menu and the waitress let me take a sneak peak. She told me that they put chili mac and hot dog mac on the new menu because they are staff favorites. It's that sort of thing that makes this place a staple for me. There really is a very home-y vibe with the staff which makes coming here so comfortable. The mac n' cheese dishes are all great. You'd think that mac n' cheese is a no-brainer... I've had some really bad mac n' cheese, but not ever at Boulevard! The new bacon-jalapeno is delicious! Soups are also really, really good-especially the cheesy potato leek. I like that there are attempts to class-up the menu with some creative spins, but they don't over-do it with clever explanations on the menu (let the food speak for itself!) and the over all quality of food doesn't suffer. Growing up in Southern New England pasta is almost a daily part of life. I have fairly low standards with pasta but can appreciate high end Italian as well. I ate plenty of it in Rome (Croatia has amazing pasta btw). I was so hungry and excited to eat them but after the first bite I knew something was wrong. It tasted foul, sour yet overly sweet, like old fish. I force-fed myself about 3 of these after attempting to add some ground pepper and garlic powder but still had to call it quits and throw it out fearing food poisoning. I didn't even bother to put it in my fridge as leftovers, and I've eaten some pretty old and dried up micro-waved leftovers before. I should also mention that I've eaten quite a bit of lobster and didn't detect a hint of it, only old "seafood". I can't imagine this was a one-off and knew I was taking a risk by ordering something no one's posted. I should have ordered something less obscure like the southern fried chicken, seems to be a hit but not sure if I'll take another chance here to find out. We really like The Boulevard as everything is quite tasty. The only thing that I had here that was bad was the Veal Picatta. The menu described it as being sautéed in the traditional way with capers and butter. What I received was something that had an odd tasting brown gravy covering it, so that is a dish that I would definitely take a pass on. The salmon was good; the meatloaf was disappointing. The worst thing about this place is the noise level - - it's impossible to hold a conversation. I have had lunch and dinner here and both times it was deafening. The other thing that was disappointing is that you cannot order the early bird specials if you are in a large group. This place sucks. You can't even get a competent person on the phone. I had two people take my order because the first guy apparently can't take a food order! I don't even have an accent to make it tough on them. When I went to pick up the order they had me wait over 15 minutes when the guy said 5 minutes. When the food came to take home- I didn't trust they got it right. I was correct for being suspicious. They had Onions on there when I requested over and over again to take it out. Trust me I had them repeat my order several times and each time (until the last) they mixed up the order! I only ordered a Cobb salad and a cheese burger with an egg and no onions. Picking up food should not be this frustrating. They made this experience unpleasant. Have some competent people helping customers directly please!!!!! Home update: so I got home. Both Cobb salad and burger were delicious; HOWEVER, not happy about the small-ish grilled chicken breast and the bacon was hardly there on the salad. It was like they took less than half of a bacon strip and grounding it underneath the salad in the middle. They really need to do a better job there with service and not skimp on the meat portions. Every Friday afternoon after work, I go hang out with my mom. My mom lives in the city. You'd think that hanging out in the city on a Friday afternoon would be cool. Right? Well, sure if your mom liked to go hang out somewhere in the city it would be great but noooooo. . moms likes to take in a movie and maybe have a bite to eat in mo' flickin' Daly City. That's right, I get to spend my Fridays kicking it in DC. I got nothing against DC, in fact, I looooove the fog but yeah, I drive from Oakland to the city to DC. Fun! She likes to go to the movies at the Century Theater near the BART station. That theater makes me mental. I HATE seeing movies there. The apex of hell was when we went to see The Lake House (did I mention that the movie choice is my mom's?) with a bunch of prepubescent 10 going on 25 year-old-girls (someone needs to tell them that in order to wear a bustier one must have something to boost) who would scream every time Keanu Reeves came on the screen. Of course, this movie sucked ass so soon the mini-Pussycat Dolls lost interest and started talking about whether or not it's gross to make out with someone who wears braces. After threatening them with me removing THEIR braces with my bare hands if they didn't STFU I needed some real comfort. . .thank god for Boulevard Cafe. This used to be a Lyon's restaurant. I used to go here frequently with my family as my nana enjoyed the half a sandwich and cup o' soup combo. When I noticed the Lyon's had closed I felt that familiar tug of losing yet another vestige of my childhood. I figured the building would get razed and we'd be gifted with yet another Walgreen's. Much to my delight the building was renovated into a googie-esque style restaurant. I love the architecture of the entrance and would like that to be my living room, thank you. Love it! The rest of the restaurant has lots of cozy booths, tables and banquettes. When I first started going to Boulevard Cafe I was all about the Macaroni and Cheese. A huge, bubbling GINORMOUS serving of luscious cheese with a little pasta thrown in. I loved this stuff. But, after careful consideration, I decided that if I wanted to live past 40, I needed to cool it with the cauldron of death. Eating one of those on your own had to be a form of slow suicide. Delicious though it was, I decided that unless I had ten friends to share it with I needed to start eating something else. So next I tried the pot roast. Delicious! Until one day, after careful consideration, I decided that eating half a side of beef can't be good for me so I retired the pot roast to the maybe sometimes but not too often bin. Next came the chicken souvlaki. OH. MY. GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! The family that owns Boulevard Cafe is of Greek descent and it shows in this dish. Perfectly cooked, juicy marinated chicken breast with caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and a super garlicky and thick tzatziki served on a grilled, fresh pita with oregano fries. Healthy, right? WRONG. . .it's huge and the side of fries is huge and hot and delicious and can be substituted with a house salad but you might as well just shoot me 'cause those fries are too luscious to resist. After careful consideration, I decided that maybe I should stick to salad. Next came the wedge salad. Almost a whole head of ice cold iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing, bacon and a drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar that offsets the richness of the blue cheese dressing perfectly. Did I mention that this salad is served on a PLATTER??? After careful consideration I decided I should just share a meal with my mom. My mom loves fried calamari and always orders that so I have to help her eat it 'cause the serving is MASSIVE. So basically since I want to make it to my next birthday, I am down to drinking water and eating fried calamari feet (since my mom only likes the rings so I get the tentacles. Joy.) Carrying on the theme of death by massive amounts of food, the desserts are HUGE as well. They are pretty good for the most part. Since they are so big I usually am done after a few bites due to palate overload. They also have a milkshake called an All Nighter which is basically a chocolate shake with a couple of shots of espresso. Nummy. They have a full bar and a happy hour which seems to be very popular. Although I still have inebriated memories of Boulevard as a Lyon's, I have to admit that the food isn't half bad. It is WAAAAAAAAAY better than drunken Lyon's food of course. Frank Sinatra was softly playing in the background, although I could barely hear it because I felt like the restaurant was ROARING. Could be due to the open kitchen. Ya can't play Sinatra and have a roaring kitchen, it just doesn't mix unless you're BLASTING the music. Also, my boyfriend and I were seated at a table that was meant for 4 people. I felt like the table was HUGE. Like there was an OCEAN in between us. But the food, the food was good. I had the spaghetti with clams and he had spaghetti with meatballs. He admitted that the spaghetti was a bit on the salty side, but he likes salt. I feel sorry for his blood pressure. The sauce for my spaghetti with clams had a touch of lemon to it so the sauce didn't feel as heavy. The acidity of the lemon cut through the heavy creaminess perfectly. So I go to this place last Sunday morning. My boyfriend picks me up, i'm not in a good mood...haven't had my morning coffee. So he suggests going to breakfast, sounds decent so i ask him where. I live in Potrero Hill in the city and there aren't too many breakfast places i like around there, unless i feel like going to the Mission. Which I didn't feel like. Since we were driving that way anyway, he suggests the Boulevard Cafe. I think, why not? My dad raves about that place, he fell in love with it. So we go, and it's not an extremely busy morning. I work in a restaurant myself, so I know when things can get crazy. The hostess gives me a half smile, and i give her my best "eff off-it's too early in the morning" smirk. We are seated, and given menus. Good enough. This is when I get irritated. We are given no water, and though about 4 other tables around us are seated AFTER us, their orders are taken first. I swear it must have been about 15 minutes before the waitress sauntered our way, not even apologizing for the wait. Another 5 to get my coffee, (Finally!) and I order the Boulevard Omelette. Simple...spinach, tomato, mushroom, and feta cheese. My boyfriend had the fried steak. I drink my coffee, which is nothing fabulous, but it'll do so i can get my kick, and we wait another 15 to 20 minutes for our food. This even is alright to me. It gives me time to wake up and people watch. At LAST! Our food arrives, but it's anything from steaming hot. I take a look at my omelet...definitely doesn't look like an omelet...it looked more like a scramble and there was hardly any cheese in the middle. It didn't taste too bad, a little salty for my taste, but i have to admit the country fried steak my boyfriend has was delicious. As for the hashbrowns? I took a bite and they tasted like those fried shoestring potatoes you get out of a can. Point is, I was not happy with this place and more likely than not I will not be back. We went there for breakfast one morning and had an overpriced, salty, meal that could be called breakfast technically I guess. The service was pretty bad. No one paid any attention to my wife and I and the waiters seemed to ignore us at every turn. The worst part? They towed our car. Yes we live in the apartments next door and we occasionally park in their parking lot overnight because their customers always park in our spots. However, we're regular customers there so we figure we can park there once in a while. Yet today unfortunately they decided to tow our car while we were there eating breakfast. Never going back again. The manager doesn't seem to care and they don't have any qualms or feel any guilt about letting their customers park in apartment spots. read more

Wow- I'm kinda surprised I haven't yelped Boulevard Cafe, seeing how its probably the best diner-esque restaurant in Daly City. I've been here a couple of times for breakfast and while the food here isn't the best I've had, its certainly very good for its location and the price point. Daly City isn't exactly a mecca for dining, fine or any other, and so Boulevard Cafe is a welcome addition to the community. So, onward to the food- from what I remember, I mostly stuck to the breakfast items, like the "Moose" and the "John Daly" omelet. The "John Daly" is a monster of an omelet- filled with bacon, avocado, sour cream, tomato, mushroom, and cheddar cheese. Its definitely a big one and unless you're starving, you'll have enough leftovers for a nice midnight snack. And really, what's not to love about an egg dish that contains bacon and cheese and avocado? I drool just thinking about it. Likewise, the "Moose"- biscuits topped with hashbrowns, bacon, tomato, green onion, country gravy, and 2 sunny-side up eggs (I asked for mine scrambled)- follows in the same vein and gives you a ton of food for under $10. I liked the omelet better, but only because the biscuits were a bit too dense and the gravy too thick for my taste. Otherwise, it was a satisfying meal. Make sure you try out the hash browns, which are probably one of the better versions I've had- the potato is fried to a crisp and is not greasy at all. I've also tasted the Country-fried steak and eggs, which was just okay. The steak was perhaps pounded a bit too thin and again, the gravy was too thick. I also tried the grilled chicken sandwich- phenomenal. The grilled chicken was actually juicy and not a charred, dried-out hunk of protein, while the caramelized onions, grilled tomato slice, arugula, and pesto mayo made it special and not so predictable. 4 solid stars to Boulevard Cafe for adding a little something to the culinary landscape of Daly City. Its not winning any James Beard awards anytime soon, but it does basic, comfort food well, as well as offering other menu items that are beyond standard diner fare at a reasonable price. read more

Not much flavor going on, on my plate.. got to taste an omelet and the hangover. The hangover was tasty but way too much chili, kind of an overkill of it. We also ordered calamari and garlic fries. The calamari was flavorless in my opinion and wouldn't order again. The fries on the other hand were delicious and probably the highlight of my meal.... sad to say. I love this place! I remember coming to this location when it was Lyon's. You know, tired decor, tacky seats from the days when you could smoke indoors, coffee from two days before, terribly mediocre food. Whoever came up with the stones and the money to make change happen (maybe it was Obama??) I give you credit. The place is huge, yet it's almost always busy when I stop by for breakfast at noon. I am the type of guy who orders the same thing at almost every restaurant I go to (with the exception of Dosa in which I pretty much eat anything they put in front of me) and that rings true here as well. I love a great burger and they make a damn good one. The fries are a bit meh, but I have no problem shoveling every last one in my mouth. The portion sizes are honestly enough for 3 people to split. They have salads they could feed half of Daly City, omelets that could do the same and the price is not too bad. There coffee is kinda wimpy, but that's just my taste, the service is always good. they have a lot of chatty cathy's working there and that is something that's a lost art int he world of go go go and then go faster. Even though they are always busy, the food comes out pretty fast, which makes sense b/c they have Latinos working the line. Overall, it's a good place to grub and they are open late too, which is always up my ally. How could I forget this, they also have a bar.
