Perfect for a fast late night bite! It's a small window beside Tempest and you can't miss it with the colour changing spotlights outside of it. There is a good selection of fun easy to eat items that are elevated beyond what the baseline offering would be. I had the mac and cheese egg rolls which were a delight of textures with the outside being crunchy and the inside being perfectly creamy and smooth. The mac and cheese by itself would've been a hit but putting it in the egg roll shell was a real treat and also made it easy to share. There was a dipping sauce that came with it too but it shone on its own without it. The staff is super friendly. They also accept credit cards so not to worry if you don't have cash. There isn't any seating but there is a little ledge outside so you don't have to precariously juggle your meal while you eat either. read more

I would have never guessed that this place would be so good just based on it's location and appearance. However, I am so glad my brother found this place because it gave me the opportunity to motorboat their brussel sprouts, cajun fries, and tacos. I also have mixed feelings because I want to know how they make their brussel sprouts so good...every one of my attempts fail miserably. The staff was friendly and down to earth while also preparing our food pretty quickly. You just order at the door, stand off to the side, and make the exchange when the food is ready. My only complaint was that the food felt a touch over-priced, but I also need to realize they are in SF. All in all, the tacos were delicious but I did spend the extra $3 to add avocado. I was happy with my decision. My least favorite menu item we ordered were the taquitos, but they could be someone else's favorite. read more

This was the perfect late night meal- we ordered the beyond burger with avocado, the Brussels sprouts and the tomato sandwich. The beyond burger was outstanding- the patty was cooked perfectly with tomato, bib lettuce and a delicious toasted bun. I had the burger which was great, cooked to correct doneness. Also got the mac n cheese egg rolls which could have used more flavor in the mac, and I really didn't like the dipping sauce they provided on the aide. My friend got the chili dog and fries, and mentioned fries portion was small for the price. Chili dog was good though. This little hole in the wall window is a savior when drinking next door at the Tempest. Quick, easy, affordable, everything you would want in some pub grub. I've eaten here a few times and everything has been great! For the prices the portions are just right and leave you satisfied while chugging down some craft beer and playing pool next door. This is a really late review. A few days ago, a friend of mine had inquired where to go in SF for eats while on a skateboard vacay to the Mecca. I looked up all the deets and shared the links, yada yada. Now for the review lol. I think it was 2016 hahaha, anyway, a friend and I flew in from KCMO to head north to do some scissor work *wink *wink. This story lol. We land at 3pm, get on the Bart, get off in the financial district to stow our gear at the Amtrak station next to the Ferry Building until our bus left the next morning at 11. We are greeted at the top of the stairs of the terminal by a dude asking me for a light. I oblige, but he's lighting a joint. We hit his joint and ask him where the Amtrak station is. This dude, says "I'll walk you guys over". We walk, chat, smoke the J. We drop our large bags and get our receipt for travel in the morning. We go walking around, come to the conclusion that as tourists we should just walk around all night long, and sleep on the way up to Humboldt. We hit the Castro, went to that white structure thingy on the hill there. We thought we saw a nazi and we're throwing mean mugs his way before rolling down the hill to i think the mission. We are now on a hunt for a thrift store to buy hoodies that we can destroy for our soon to be gig up north. Sweatshirts were locked down pretty quick, at which point we focused on the next task. We found a liquor store and snagged a pint of makers mark. We then see this Cuban dude hangin at the bus stop, he starts yelling at me "khansas ceety " he loves baseball because he identifies me in my KC hat. Shit, now I'm thinking this must have been 2014 cuz we hadn't beat SF in the World Series yet. Ok, I ask this cat if he can locate some Mota. He says he can and will be back in 5 haha. Homeboy comes back with some tiny little wilded out lady, reached out to hand me what I thought was going to be weed.....it was crack. I said no man i want Marijuana!! He said he would be right back while the lady was trying to talk to me in espanol. We jumped on the bus and decided we would head down to fisherman's wharf cuz we had found a hip hop show at a bar near there and thought maybe we could find someone down there with some smoke and if not catch a beer and a show. We don't have medical cards, and they are required there at that time. So we're cruising down the street and drive past a dispensary. I pull the cable and tell my friend we should shoulder tap folks outside like we used to do for 40's in high school. We're posted up outside by a fence asking strangers to get us weed. Like 5 folks say no. Then, this dude with a curly fro under a ball cap rolls out with a skateboard and backpack, walks right up to us and asks if we were looking for weed. We said we were and he then sells us 2gr of cherry pie, and 2gr of gsc. We pound him up and then he asks us, have you guys ever tried chicken in waffles? We're like, of course we've had chicken and waffles, we're from the Midwest! He says, no, I said chicken IN waffles. Then, goes on to tell us it's confit chicken chopped up and put in the waffle batter. Sliced into strips and served with a sriracha maple syrup sauce. We told him we wanted to check it out. The directions he gave us were wild because it involved fences, ally's, and hidden doors. We were excited for this local knowledge and headed that way. We found the spot. While waiting to order some dudes we're going on and on about how good the box burger was. We get up to the door/window and order box burger to split and an order of chicken in waffles. While we're waiting some cats roll up and order, then start making cocktails on the hood of their car. We roll over to them and chat em up. Next thing you know, we're drinking with these folks and they invite us to some house party their going to in the town. We decline cuz we're leaving in the morning and that could get sketchy on time. Our food comes out and I'm here to tell ya. That chicken in waffles will forever be in my memories!!! The chicken was moist af. The waffle was soft, yet crispy, and the combo of that with the syrup was next level. The burger was excellent as well. I will end this crazy story here and not get into the rest of the bizarre evening where we end up crashing a few hours in a roll off construction dumpster on some old rolls of carpet haha. It's understandable why their name is "Box Kitchen" because the location consists of the window (box) and the kitchen behind that window. Nonetheless, their food is BOMB'DIGGS!!!! Box Kitchen is located in a small alley-looking area. It is open late which is ideal because I don't know about you but my friends and I are usually hungry after an event or concert hosted in SF. They have a unique menu consisting of burgers, wings, fritters, tacos, elotes, fries, etc. Keep in mind that the later in the day it gets, the smaller the menu gets because once they run out of certain ingredients for something, that's it for the day. People rave about their burgers but I am here to talk about their elotes! Their elotes don't come on a stick. They come in a tray and you eat them with a fork so they are different from other restaurants/places, right off the bat. The corn is cooked in their chipotle lime butter and elote spice, topped with their garlic aioli sauce, radishes, and queso fresco, and is garnished with cilantro. I know this is isn't the traditional way of making elotes but man oh man is it a tasty way! The corn is cooked perfectly. The toppings are not too dense and don't overpower the flavor of the corn. I have come here a couple of times. The quality and flavor of their food has remained consistent. The workers are very welcoming and energetic. Their food does take a few minutes BUT is worth the wait. I think this place is worth a try the next time you're in the area. A hole in the wall... literally! Looking around for some late night eats and found this place on Yelp. The place seemed a little sketchy because it's down a dark alley next to a dive bar surrounded by drunk people. If a place like this was in San Jose, you deeeefinitely shouldn't be there. But this is San Francisco. It's a totally different vibe! First off, the drunk people surrounding the place are pretty nice and friendly. Everyone is drunk, but they're all happy that they get to chow down on the goodies coming out of Box. Second, the menu choices at Box are different from the typical late night fare. Chicken confit? Sriracha maple syrup? Bacon shallot gastrique?? HUH? O_O I'm definitely not at Jack in the Box! You MUST try the garlic fries. The BEST garlic fries I've ever had. Yes, even better than Gilroy. There's REAL garlic flavor. And the garlic isn't just sprinkled on top. It must be in the oil because you can really taste it in every bite of fries! Most of the fries come out crispy, but even the not-so-crispy ones taste good! The roasted potato skins were sooooo good. Roasted potato halves filled with chunks of crispy pork belly and topped with cheese and a fried quail egg. Talk about elevated! I wish every place made potato skins like this! The goat cheese and bacon potato croquettes are also a good choice. The bacon inside still stays crispy in the middle. Love the addition of the goat cheese and the homemade salsa just ties everything together. The chicken IN waffle was a surprise! You might think it's the typical friend chicken and waffle, but instead of making it a knife-and-fork situation, they actually put the chicken inside the waffle itself. Handheld and yummy! The Sriracha maple syrup was a nice touch! Sometimes the wait can be a little long when the kitchen gets backed up, but the wait is worth it! I love this place. I've taken numerous friends here in both states, drunk and sober. I've tried the kale egg burger, chicken sando, potato skins, garlic fries, and Thai chicken wings. Everything is deliciously greasy and horribly unhealthy, but somehow you just can't bring yourself to care. My vote is for the chicken sando and garlic fries; the garlic fries come in a huge box that you can slowly work through with a friend, and they are the perfect level of crisp - just don't try to breathe on anyone after. The chicken is crunchy and paired with a creamy sauce, and you have to be careful you don't finish it within a couple bites. The potato skins which come with cheese, pork belly, and quail egg are also so good, but they're accompanied by a good serving of guilt. I haven't tried some of the more daring things on the menu, but I don't think Box Kitchen ever gets things wrong. The wait can get a bit long, especially you stop by at 2am with a bunch of other drunchy fiends, but this little hidden stand in a sketch alleyway serves up some of the best late-night food out there. read more

There's no "inside" of this place except for those who work there. Great grab and go spot, especially with Tempest next door. Well, they ARE related. It's common to order food at Box Kitchen, find seating in Tempest, and drink beer while waiting. The first time I visited, I got the Box Burger and Garlic Fries. So good! I was impressed by freshness of the fries, and even more so by the burger. The use of a potato bun was most memorable! There are tons of other delicious-sounding items on the menu, including pastrami tacos, fried cheese sticks, and elote. It's rare to find an overall bomb menu where I feel determined to try everything at least once. The partnership between Box Kitchen and Tempest is perfect. You can order food at Box Kitchen to take home or dine at Tempest without fighting the dive bar crowd to eat. It's right next to a bar called the Tempest which you can sit at if you don't feel like eating on the curb or taking your order to go. On the plus side, they do take both cash and card. I went with the box burger and some garlic fries on the side. The burger looked smallish, but looks were deceiving, and it actually filled me up when I had a pretty big appetite. The burger itself was very juicy, and also came with some bacon, lettuce, tomato, shallots, among other things. We ended up eating inside at the Tempest and ordered a couple drinks. Pop-up restaurants are the new food truck. A literal hole in the wall serving late night bar food from a walk up counter next to a bar (using the bar's previously unused kitchen?). Not as sketchy a corner as you'd think given the proximity to 6th Street (a.k.a. Crack Alley). Best strategy is to turn on to Natoma from 5th to avoid the nearby street theater (and I don't mean Boxcar). All the food was made to order, so it was a good thing we were the only people there else I might expect a long wait. Seemed like an interesting menu so I will definitely be back to try other items like Aaron's Little Wiener. Fried Pickles: Some of the best fried pickles I've ever had. Very thinly sliced so when they're fried, they are actually crispy. I hate when fried pickles are so thick that they are still squishy after being fried. Love the sour contrast to the salty fried crust. Some nice seasoning, like Old Bay (?) on top. A nice creamy dipping sauce helped add extra calories. Wings: The sauce seemed Asian soy inspired, almost like something you'd expect on a spare rib. But it worked. Though I love hot wings, I appreciated all the spices going on in this sauce and enjoyed the experience of trying to figure out all the flavors. Chicken in Waffle: Innovation! Why throw fried chicken on top of waffles when you can put chicken inside the waffles??? Kind of like a bacon waffle, but with pulled chicken bits. Extremely tasty. However, not only is the food really yummy, the service at this hole in the wall far surpasses its humble appearance (and many real sit-down restaurants). Came here on a Thursday night to pick up dinner for two - burger, potato skins, chicken sando... and a beet salad so that we wouldn't feel like complete carnivores. After a relatively short wait, the nice cashier told us that she couldn't fulfill our salad order cuz they ran out of beets. While many places would've simply just said "sorry, we ran out," what did Box Kitchen do differently? Box still gave us a perfectly fine salad (minus some beets), apologized for it, AND gave us the full refund of the salad back! This place might be the #1 thing I miss about SF. You walk up past a small window and chalkboard menu to order. I don't know if I would even have noticed it unless it was pointed out to me. I was told that despite being in/near/partnered with a dive bar, Box strives to combine fresh, whole ingredients and merge street food with haute (maybe not exactly, but high-end) cuisine. They nailed it. The garlic fries are in every single other person's review for a reason. Order them. I went with a falafel wrap. Lettuce, tomato, hummus, tazitiki (which I asked to be kept off), feta in lavash. What came advertised as lettuce was really a blend of amazing greens, among them arugula. I can't rave about this wrap enough-- it was huge and delicious. If more bars served food like this, people would never be forced to attend a 24 hour crappy chain restaurant again. Found it on Yelp! I got off work late and my friend and I wanted to get some American comfort food late night. Look it up on yelp and found this name with good reviews. Yes, it is literally a window on the street but omg the food is amaze-balls! I didn't want to eat much and the food is heavy handed, so I went for the corndogs. The garlic aioli was amazing and I don't like garlic. Now my friend ordered the pastrami sandwich and it was smashing. I don't like the salty lunchmeats but this sandwich was ridiculous. Literally a hole in the wall. We got to-go boxes but apparently, you can also eat at Tempest, the bar next door. For sides, they had fried mac and cheese balls, which was really good though they give you ones that are just cheese too. Surprisingly, the Brussels sprouts were even better! One of my absolute fav spots to go to, especially on a late night out. Chicken sando is always crunchy and a great bite. Their honey grilled cheese is off the hook. Great balance of sweet and savory that contrasts with bite of the sourdough bread. Customer service is always on point!
