Everytime I go to have a couple drinks at the Tempest Bar, next door this is my to go to when I am feeling hungry! You can also order food and take it with you inside the bar. I think it's a pretty sweet gig! They always have really great selections on their menu, and always keep it interesting! Dive bar atmosphere with great food and prices. Good service and made friends with a few cool locals at the bar. A bit disppointed alot of the menu was unavailable but it was due to a recent fire which was out of their control. Just something to keep in mind if you wanted fried dishes like the chicken sando. Box Kitchen is a great to go if you are somewhat incapacitated, but it's only okay otherwise. The food was decent AKA good but stingy on the cheese (3/5), and the customer service was not great (2/5). At Box Kitchen, you order at a little window, then wait outside for ~10 min while they prep your food. You are also able to order food from Box at the Tempest bar, which is right next door. In general, most entrees were in the $10-15 range, and there were some sides or appetizers for $6+. One thing that disappointed me a little bit, is that the menu online is more extensive than the actual menu at the restaurant, so the things I wanted were not available the day I went. I think they might rotate the menu day-by-day, so the selection on the day you go varies a bit. Our food was pretty reasonable. We ordered Honey Grilled Cheese Sando, the Buffalo Chicken Nuggets, Parmesan Garlic Fries, and a Coke. The grilled cheese was actually very tasty. I was a little wary of the honey being used instead of butter, but I really liked it. It added a nice sweet flavor. The one thing I didn't like about this sandwich was that it didn't have much cheese. It seemed like they only put cheese on 1/2 the sandwich. Then, the "parmesan garlic fries" (menu board said) were actually just garlic fries. I saw 2 shreds of parmesan at the bottom of the box, but that was it. The chicken nuggets were good. They came with some little veggies and buffalo sauce on top. You can also get them with honey mustard instead. Finally, we ordered a coke. When we were walking away, we realized the coke wasn't in our bag and went back to retrieve it. The cashier insisted that we had never ordered one and wouldn't give it to us. This is my first time here at Box Kitchen. I looked it up here on Yelp and thought I should give it a try. The staff was very friendly. I got a chill vibe from the place and people working here. The alley is a bit sketchy, but it wasn't too far from the main street which was nice. It's near the University of the Pacific on 5th St. We ordered two Box Burgers, one Chicken & Waffles, and two orders of Garlic Fries. We waited 10-15 minutes for our food. Since there isn't anywhere to sit outside (the bar is 21+) we took our food to go. We ate it on our way home, & the food was delicious. The Box Burger was really good. I really enjoyed the honey smoked bacon (at least I think it was bacon lmao). The Garlic Fries were not too garlicky which was great. I took a bite out of my brother's Chicken & Waffles, and the waffles were alright. The chicken was really crispy and the maple syrup was really good. It was a bit pricy, but the food was great. One thing I would say is that you should specify how you want your meat, because I got medium rare (which I'm okay with that) and my mom got one with a big chunk of raw meat. Yes it's a hole in the wall in an alley but at no point did I feel unsafe. I went to Tempest with a coworker this past weekend and after our dumb (obviously drunk) idea to take shots of fireball, I wanted to introduce him to Box. We ordered the burger, garlic fries, and something else. I say something else because I woke up the next morning and there were 3 boxes on my kitchen counter and one of them was completely cleaned out. It obviously was good. Too bad I don't remember what I ordered. I didn't finish the fries or burger, so I knew I ordered those 2 items. Coming from Vegas where everything is open late (as late as 3am or later), you grow accustom to a certain expectation of convenience. While on vacation here in SF, it's always difficult for me to plan my preferred eating times around the waking hours of SF. I have a bad tendency to skip breakfast but, snack for lunch in the late afternoon, therefore looking for something to eat for dinner around 10-11pm. You can imagine my struggle whenever I'm on vacation and food places close anywhere from 6pm to 9pm. So, when I yelped for an affordable, quick bite, open passed the hours of 10pm, I was delighted to see such a well-rated joint - Box Kitchen. From where I was (the Westfield mall), the walk wasn't bad at all. However, I did question the area of Box Kitchen the closer I got to it. Turn down an alleyway that isn't the best lit, with not a lot of people around, great. I judged a book by its cover, sadly, but never again. I ordered the Turkey sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the Bolito Misto. While I was expecting a basic turkey sandwich with not a lot of flavor to it, I was proven wrong. The turkey meat was carved and not reminiscent of your average deli meat at all. The aioli sauce on top of that... to die for! But don't let me forget the Bolito Misto. While I didn't get to enjoy the sandwich as a whole, my boyfriend was kind enough to let me try a slice of the meat and it was delectable. Small, but packed full of flavor and the aroma of the sandwich itself made it an even better experience. Don't skip the Box Kitchen like I almost did just because it's in a sort of inconvenient place. This is going to be a very short review. Box Kitchen is literally a hole of the wall. It's located in South Market section of San Francisco. Imagine a food truck, but there's no truck. My wife and I wanted to go somewhere different but not too far from hotel we were staying at. We found this place in Yelp. The neighborhood is a little scary, especially at dusk. No other establishments except the bar next door. Anyway..you order your food from a guy at the opening. I think the guy is over it with his position. Let's just say his customer service skills could use a touch up. There is no place to sit. If you want to eat "there", you have to go the bar. There is no guarantee there is a season available. There wasn't when went, so we walked back to the hotel. Next time I go, I will order a to-go box. For a first timer like me, this process was very frustrating. But the burger made up for it. It was awesome. I'm not sure if I will come here again, but I better look in the bar for a place to sit if I decide to eat out. Or at least stay in a hotel close by. Was rather disappointing-they made my fries plain even though I had asked for garlic, the top of my bun was overcooked and crunchy, and the burger and fries were barely warm-it's like it was sitting for a long time. They also put a 3% surcharge on the prices per the bottom of the receipt (for employees "He"[sic) - I assume it's supposed to say healthcare. But the bread it was served on was the perfect blend of soft/fluffy with a slight toasted crust, and the vinaigrette or citrus glaze on the pork lent it just the right amount of acidity... What the fuck am I talking about, this is a dive bar sando, isn't it? Let's just say that it was the best $8 sandwich you will order from a dutch door that opens up to a urine-soaked alley. But really though, you can come here sober and it'll be just as good. After eating the whole day in SF, my friend and I decided to get two things and share. It was super hard to narrow down our choices and it doesn't help that they have a lot of potato entrees! I stared down the menu for a good 10 minutes trying to decide if I wanted garlic fries or potato skins. I ended up getting potato skins and a box burger. HOLY SHIZ, the potato skins were DIVINE. I just wished i hadn't devoured them that quickly. The burger was good, but not as good as the potato skins. If any of y'all are thinking about coming here, don't count the calories and just get the potato skins. Like nike says, JUST DO IT. Enter: the world's best drunk food... or hungover food... or I need to eat this in 15 minutes food. I was in San Francisco for a week and I ate here three times, under three different circumstances. The first was while drinking. We took down: mac & cheese balls, garlic fries and hush puppies. Oddly enough, these weren't my favourite even though I was a few drinks deep and feeling pretty darn happy go lucky, but still a solid choice and you can bring it into Tempest (the dive bar next door). Bonus. The second time was hungover the day after our big work shindig and we ordered burgers and bloody marys from inside Tempest. Between 11am - 3pm they act as the bar's "lunch menu". Damn fine burger. But the last time... the last time was happy music, YouTube magic. Why? Because I was sober, starving and ate my fried chicken sandwich while sitting on a sidewalk at midnight because we were too fussed and hungry to make it back to the hotel. AND IT WAS MAGICAL. Sitting on the corner of a "scary and creepy" alley way, this place did not seem to be a typical place that offers tasty food. I was wrong. It has a small windows for food ordering and there is a bar next door so that you can also "dine in". We went here on a Thursday night, picked up our orders and quickly escaped from the alley way (it was indeed not pleasant). We ended up sitting in front of the dentistry school across the main street and hoped that the food was not too bad. Well i guess i should have thought it cannot be bad with such a high rating on Yelp. The food was unbelievable. I had the Box Burger and it blew me away: the patty was thick and super juicy, the saltiness was just enough to make the burger flavorful. The vegetables also tasted very fresh. The price was ok: The burger was 11 dollars w/o tax which was a little high for a street food place. it was worth it though. Also since you can see their kitchen from the ordering windows, the hygiene level can be a concern. I mean, I've seem a human being shit on the street, and it's the menu at Box that leaves me speechless. Roasted potato skins topped with crisped pork belly and, oh, a quail egg because yes. Garlicky herbed fries are a thing everyone does, and Box is everyone just as much as anyone, only they do them like nobody else. There's not enough room for potato - every spud shoot is just saturated with outrageously essenced confit fatty fat. And sprankle of vergetation. Sorry, mouth's full of delicious memories. Finally, those Brussels sprouts. Stuff of legend. Yeah, there were spicy-sweet sesame wings, big and meaty and all that, but the sprouts stole the show. I mean dropped the mic, walked off stage, didn't need an encore, stole the show. I don't know what magic sweet and tannic blend they drizzle over those hearty, caramelized cabbage juniors, but it's just... right. These are a must. Order them always. Order them if your teeth are Brussels sprouts and you're not sure which will side will give on your first bite (spoiler alert: who cares? Get real teeth.) I think that Box Kitchen just hits the drunk food mark so perfectly, that ever single top drunk food experience will come flooding back and you body will have trouble understanding that something is missing. How could something taste this good if you haven't been out all night?! I'm not gonna lie - While I was in SF this past week, I hit up Box Kitchen twice in one day, and no, I am not ashamed. Trip 1. Got myself the chicken and waffles. A hard combination to find in Calgary if you're looking for effort put into the two most important aspects, being Chicken and Waffles. Box Kitchen does it right and taught me a new way of life. I never really understood the American fandom to this mix until I tried box chicken's, I mean Box Kitchen's (see?! they're already messing me up!) Chicken & waffles... People! The saltiness of the fried chicken works with the waffles in a very similar way to bacon. I'm not saying chicken is better than bacon, in fact, I never would, but I will say that it keeps up. It's a re-defining genera. Go ahead and pour the syrup over everything. The two of them hold their own, but are happier when you blend them. The waffles? Soft. Fluffy. Crispy. Magnificent. The chicken? Juicy. Tender. Crispy. Magnificent. Put them together and you've got a home run, or a #WINNING sports analogy of your choosing. Trip 2. Late night, super tired albeit sober fast food craving. This led me to realize that Box Kitchen is NOT fast food, but in fact good food, fast. I got the Chicken Caesar Sando - hold your horses scaredy cat - a Sando is really just a sandwich... on a bun, maybe? I don't really know the difference, but that made it all the more enjoyable. The same delish deep fried chicken breast I had experienced early was now on a sandwich, covered by some American-style creamy coleslaw. Failing to find a spot to park our tushes inside Tempest, the neighbouring bar the Box Kichen Serves as a regular kitchen for, we parked our butts curbside to consume some chicken. Yup. I'd shove a Box Kitchen Chicken Sando in my face curbside - ignoring the stench of street-side urine, the Sando is one deliciously mean chicken bun-wich. I can't wait to go back. I've totally been to Tempest before, but it took one adventuring friend to bring me to Box Kitchen, which I've never noticed before. I ignored my calorie counting for one day and ordered the Box Burger, garlic fries, and mac and cheese balls. The food took a while, but we weren't in any real hurry. We took our food to the nearby Yerba Buena Gardens to chow down. The burger was a nice medium, which I liked, considering that they don't ask you about your desired temperature. The burger was good - a solid patty, good toppings, good flavor. The garlic fries weren't garlicy enough for me, but that's just my personal preference. And the mac and cheese balls, while tasty, were way too hearty for me. Box Kitchen would make the perfect drunk food for the next time I'm at Tempest. A shady little window just down the block from Tempest's entrance, doesn't suggest "culinary wonders" to you. Well maybe the brussel sprouts are the closest thing to perfect and the burger is the next most perfect and then the chicken sandwich. The Box takes bar food seriously, and have added creative additions to the bar food staples that are designed to get you sitting straight on the stool again. There's also lighter fare for those so inclined. While most patrons have probably had too many Tempest Specials to note the difference, the ingredients used in the food are also top notch: Neman ranch beef, fresh artisanal bread delivered every morning...no frozen-patty burgers here. This is in a very bad part of town, and as a non-native I got lost. I got my food back to the hotel room and wondered if it was worth it... YES. YES IT WAS. YES. OH YES. I think I got the regular burger on their menu and it tasted amazing. The fries were good but the burger was extremely tasty! It hit the spot. I was blown away.
