Our experience was good overall. The calamari appetizer was really chewy and the Asian one didn't really taste all that Asian inspired. I ordered an Asian steak salad that was really lacking and very tiny. My two friends loved the fish and chips- fries were awesome. However there was a drunk homeless man that made his way into the woman's bathroom as my friend and I were in there and made the experience a little strange. Let's just say he took a very large number two, and when he saw us waiting to use the stall, he acted like it was a normal occurrence. I went to the Brazen Hen for Restaurant Week on Sunday October 21 at 1:00pm with 8 friends. I made a reservation a week before, called the day before to confirm, and called again the day of to update the number. It took forever for the waitress to come to our table. Then forever to get our drinks....and forever to take our order. At 2:00pm we were still waiting for our salads! We were there for over 2 1/2 hours! Paying the check took over 30 minutes! I have called the restaurant several times to speak with the manager and I was told the manager wasn't there. Finally someone told me he would be there the following day between 12:30 and 3:00. I called to talk to him about our horrible experience but was told he was busy. I left my phone number and he never called back. I guess he doesn't want to hear any feedback from the customers. There are so many great restaurants in Westerly to choose from, I will not be back! It's a beautiful place but the service is terrible and customer service non existent. read more

Waited for our food for over half an hour. Never heard a word from our server, and it's not actually busy, so not sure what the excuse was. They read out a list of items from the menu they didn't have when we arrived, which included bacon wrapped scallops, literally the main reason we came. Dinner service was great, our waitress Frankie was super nice, and her recommendations were honest and thought out. All of our meals were bomb, and the service was very fast. Would totally come back! We were less than impressed. The menu is odd- they bill themselves as an Irish Pub & Restaurant, but the menu is a strange Irish/Asian/whatever-mood-the-chef-is-in fusion that doesn't really work. It's terribly confused & sadly, none of it is fantastic. The atmosphere & drinks are fantastic- if that's what you're after, you're in luck. If you want food, head to one of the other downtown Westerly establishments. (Though fair warning, for an Irish pub, the beer list is painfully small.) We tried an assortment of foods- losers: Irish Cheddar Ale soup, which is not only a painfully small portion but also more like a cheese sauce than a soup- it's been so overly reduced & thickened. Also, the Irish Crisps with garlic sauce & blue cheese. I'm not a big salt eater but even I was complaining abut the lack of seasoning. Also, it was a bowl full of chips with sauce on about 6 crisps leaving mostly plain, dull, unseasoned chips. It would be better if the sauce were on the side as a dip perhaps because these were, by & large tasteless. The winner was one of the night's random Asian specials which I won't bug you with since it's not a regular menu item. The rest was just mediocre. I swear it tasted like someone had dumped a bottle of orange juice in it- so strange! But most of all, it was inedible. Ordered shepherd's pie. It's not shepherd's pie. Very easy guide: what do shepherds tend? Sheep. If it's a shepherd's pie, it has lamb, not ground beef. Period. No exception. Beyond that, for those of you who might feel that's overly pedantic (it's not...), the body of the dish tasted like a top notch sloppy joe. Very flavorful, but tomato based and very sweet. The only clue that this was a shepherd's pie was that it was covered with mashed potatoes. When a crappy chain restaurant screws up shepherd's pie, you understand, and probably expect it. When an Irish restaurant messes it up, it is very disappointing, and hard to understand. Service was ok. There were two people at the bar and two people in the dining room when we were sat, and we were made to feel like it was busy and we would have to be patient. There were no problems or big waits but we were a little confused at the impression we were given by the server, friendly though she was. I've heard good things about the place, but am definitely underwhelmed, despite the expectation of pub food. Unimpressive beer selection. With so many local beers, I expected more. Smithwicks and Guinness are fine, but not when they're the cutting edge of the group. If you want a good bar, head around the corner to Malted Barley instead. Okay, I grew up in Westerly, RI so to come back to your home town every five or ten years is almost a religious experience. BUT since my old standbys are getting a little long in the tooth so to speak, I decided to try finding new great places to eat by using YELP. And boy did that work. I have just finished reviewing five places in Westerly, Rhode Island and it's sister burb Pawcatuck, Connecticut and all were outstanding. And I never would have found one of them without personal referrals and most of all with out YELP. So I am here typing away to "give some back for the blessings I have had". It might sound hokey but being 400 miles away from my home in Baltimore, MD and fifty years out of date with where to find great food in Westerly, Yelp is a godsend. Now frankly in our three day experience all of the places we went to were absolutely outstanding, but what do you expect? I am not exactly a novice at finding great value and great food, so I expect to knock the cover off the ball each time and I usually do. Thus the weight problem mentioned in a few of my prior reviews. BUT in fairness to the greatness of the other restaurants we reviewed, it is important to choose even among the great values. And in this case the Brazen Hen is the leader among champions. I loved my New England Clam Chowder and I normally never do sea food of any kind, but this was fantastic. The salad with apples, greens, cheeses, pecans and scallops wrapped in bacon were to die for and very generously included on a rather inexpensive dish. So, with that and the huge plate of little neck steamers and a great salad my companion had, this place took the top honor. Not just because the price for top quality was very reasonable but the part time waitress who waited on us couldn't have been more beautiful and charming as well as efficient. And the chef who snuck up to our table to make sure we were pleased, ( even though it was 12:30 PM and I am sure he was super busy,) made me think, here is a place I am coming back to. To those of us who knew Westerly/.Pawcatuck/Watch Hill/ Weekapaug over the last half century you all owe a lot to the now famous man who decided to save your town from mediocrity by rebuilding The Ocean House, The Weekapaug Inn, The Westerly Train Station, The Knickerbocker Jazz Pub, The Narragansett Inn now known as the Watch Hill Inn, and the hopes and dreams of a thousand local entrepreneurs, and while he will remain nameless he is proving he is as great at investing in townspeople as he has been in his mutual funds. By creating a ground swell of economic activity that allows really great chefs, and really great young kids who wait tables, to come together to change all of our eating and dining experiences. Truly they all are making Westerly great again. The Brazen Hen has nothing to do with the above mentioned businesses as far as I know, but boy what a wonderful food experience that I never would have found if I wasn't so impressed with the redone Ocean House that I found a classic jazz night at the Knickerbocker Inn on Railroad Avenue, right up the street from Canal Street and this great dining experience at the Brazen Hen was my extra bonus. When we found that the The Knickerbocker Inn was closed for that Tuesday evening we decided to "do lunch" instead of buying tickets and boy was it a nice surprise. Great food at reasonable prices. We tries their cheddar beer soup and it was delicious...I also had their shepherd's pie and it was some of the tastiest I had...a little greasy but very good. The fish and chips were also ordered at our table and my friends liked it although it was also a little greasy. The portions are good too...I had leftovers. The staff was friendly as well. Our first time time here for dinner. The decor is Irish / English pub style and nicely done, but with hard rock from the sound system. I don't know about you, but hard rock during dinner is NOT appealing. Don't get me wrong as I can rock out with the best, but it's not dinner music, hello !! My wife and I split the buttermilk calamari ($10) for appetizer. It came with a fair amount of tentacles vs. rings (good to see). The portion was a little small. My wife liked the flavor with the peppers and balsamic, I did not. For entrees my wife had the Fish & Chips ($16). They were reported as NOT very good. I tasted them and concur. The batter was light, but greasy. The fish was overcooked. The "chips" are not proper chips but some seasoned, battered concoction. A disaster. We would not recommend the Fish & Chips. That said Fish & Chips are a mainstay for an Irish or English pub. One must get it correct. I had the short ribs with risotto ($26). The ribs were good size, tender and flavorful. I have had better, but these were good. The risotto was done correctly and flavorful. Broccoli rabe rounded out the plate. The house wine is a generous pour at $6.5 per. That said I had to return a glass due to soap residue. Three glasses of wine, tax and tip we were out the door for $88 and change. The minuses here out weighed the positives for us. We ended up at The Brazen Hen by accident (oddly enough the two restaurants we tried to go to were closed for private wedding receptions) but ended up having a really enjoyable experience. The atmosphere is very nice and the decor is sophisticated and trendy all at the same time. We opted to sit outside, which as the night went on, proved to be a bit chilly (nothing a few heat lamps wouldn't fix). I would call the menu 'eclectic pub' - I ordered the Whiskey Peppercorn Steak and while it was a bit overcooked (I ordered medium - definitely came out well done) the mashed potatoes and whiskey peppercorn sauce were delicious. I did overhear another diner saying her tuna was a bit overcooked as well - perhaps an inexperienced or busy chef was to blame, but the sauce on my steak helped keep it moist. My sisters and cousins ordered the Mediterranean shrimp pasta, crab cakes and a salad and were all very satisfied with their meal. The poor reviews below are flat out wrong. I joined a party of 8 people at the Brazen Hen for a dinner at 7:30pm. Earlier in the day we had made a reservation for dinner and there were no issues getting our reserved table. As other reviewers have mentioned, the menu is not as large as other restaurants. It is a single page menu. This is consistent with the owner's other restaurant in Niantic, "The Black Sheep". I'll give a shout out to Bryn, our waitress for the evening. We were out for a co-worker's birthday and can get rambunctious at times, but overall are a fun group. She handled our jokes pretty well. She was very attentive and answered all of our questions with ease. She even allowed my fiance to sample two of their wines (Bryn actually suggested it). Based on the prior reviews, we were anxious about how the atmosphere, service, and food would be. The first test was a plate of 20 wings. We had the hoison and buffalo wings. They were cooked perfectly and came out to the table hot. They weren't doused in sauce, so we could actually taste the chicken. At the same time we got our appetizer, the table next to us got their food. The plates looked amazing and I could say the same about our meals. I ordered the calamari appetizer as a meal and it again was cooked well (large enough portion as a full meal). The calamari was not chewy or soaked in grease. Excellent meal. My brother ordered a side caesar salad as an appetizer and it came with a half head of romaine lettuce. It was fresh and crisp. He ordered the shepard's pie and again, it came out steaming hot and was a very good meal. A co-worker got the previously reviewed pulled-pork meal and was equally as happy. Everyone who ordered a meal cleared their plate. That right there is a mark of good food. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the Brazen Hen and will definitely go back. We've been here twice for dinner and stopped in today for lunch. Each time was a good experience. The meals were all very tasty, the place has a nice atmosphere, and interesting decor. The service has also been good, although today I'd say it was more adequate than superb. On my first visit I wanted to try some authentic Irish food , and went with the bangers and mash. I really enjoyed it, but have no other experience to compare that dish with. All in all, I like this place and will definitely go back. read more

Well we stopped in Memorial day with our son, daughter-in-law and our 4 year old granddaughter. Now I know this is a bar/restaurant but it was completely appropriate place at lunch time for a family with a youngster, so I thought until we got our server at our table. Angela was terrible in regards to her table side manner. While not yelling at our 4 year old granddaughter she had NO patience at all for her. She told her to be quite I think twice and the rest of the time at the restaurant she spent less than 3 seconds at the table. When we would see her she would ask "is everything ok" and without waiting for an answer would whisk away as if she was allergic to us. Twice we had to go to the bar to re-order soda and chocolate milk. The food was good, I just would not go to lunch here with any kids, apparently they are not kid friendly. read more

I really liked this place. I was planning my companies Holiday party and needed to find a place half way between the offices in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Online, It looked cute and cozy, and It was. They helped me plan a great afternoon and everyone had an amazing time. The restaurant decor and layout are beautiful, my office took some great photos in front of the large fire place. The food was amazing. I was unsure what the quality would be like in buffet style and they far exceeded my expectations. People couldn't get enough of the appetizers and the main course dishes and dessert were great. We decided to take a trip to Westerly and walked into this place without knowing anything about the Brazen Hen. I got the Ninja burger which was a different kind of burger in an Irish place. The Ninja had kimchi on it and I now want to make a burger just to put kimchi on it. It had the right amount of spice to it. The fries were perfect and needed no salt. The Shepard's pie was ok. On a quiet afternoon. we visited the Malted Barley then The Brazen Hen, both are a very short walk apart(we parked on the street). The Brazen has beautiful rich dark decor with an upscale feel although it was casual. Bathrooms (yes I am raving about the bathrooms - as did my male companion) were amazing, must see for yourself. We sat at the bar and chose from a wide variety of brews and spirits. We shared a spectacular appetizer - stuffies - that were homemade and in a word "delicate". I mention both Irish establishments in one review, because while different, both are well worthwhile with different vibes, we would definitely go back to each one! Nice interior and decoration. Ambiance was so-so. Draught beer list was typical Irish with nothing out of the box. In fact, they had Sam Adams winter lager on tap, which thankfully was discounted. I've been looking forward to going to the Brazen Hen for months now and I wasn't disappointed. My wife and I both had the RI Stuffies for an appetizer and the fish and chips for dinner. (Yeah, we have similar tastes.) The stuffies were made Portuguese style with chourico, peppers and just enough heat. The fish and chips were beer battered, deep fried to perfection with handcut fries that were perfectly seasoned. The only "negative" was that we were both too full for dessert. But we're certainly planning on going back. The service was excellent, too. Our server was ready for our drink orders within a minute of us being seated and our appetizers and entrees were brought out promptly without being rushed. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, though we chose to sit outside on this beautiful August evening. This is my second time at the brazen hen and I can't say enough good things about the food and service. I am from Connecticut and it has been my go to spot when I'm passing though. My waitresses name this time was Dani and she was very friendly and helpful when recommending dishes. I would highly recommend the crab crake apps, bacon wrapped scallops, and the pot stickers as an appetizer. For main courses I've had the lab stew ( I think it's a special) and the salmon and have been very very happy both times. The chef obviously knows what he's doing! As for the food and service well some serious issues need to be addressed, one waitress working on a Friday lunch just doesn't seem fair as she obviously couldn't give the best service. I can't figure out what all the negative reviews are about! I've been to Brazen Hen twice now and had a great time both times! The first time I went was during opening week. My three girlfriends and I opted for outdoor seating so that we didn't have to wait. Though the outdoor view is of the parking lot, it is one of the few places in town where you can enjoy some sunshine with your dinner. The wine selection was decent and wasn't too high priced. I had the house chardonnay... the pour was very healthy and the price was on par with everything else in town. We all enjoyed our meals and didn't have any problems. The only complaint I could maybe think of is that the service was a bit slow... but I go out to dinner for the company not to rush right through a meal. The second time I went with my boyfriend for dinner. We went on a Friday night, were seated promptly. I had the Brazen Hen for dinner and once again enjoyed my meal very much. This was our second attempt here and will be our last. Service took forever, had to ask for water and bread twice. Food took nearly an hour to come out. Once it did, the "golden" brown chicken from the chicken and waffles was burnt to the color of pine bark and bland to say the least. Nobody asked how we were doing for nearly 30 minutes. This is a favorite haunt. My favorite place to sit is outside with a view of the train tracks. The food is very good here. Good home cooking that makes your taste buds happy. Funny story. I once ordered a coconut margarita and I was brought a coke AND a margarita. I don't drink soda, ever but my dinner companion did so it was all good.
