Review #1002: I wasn't impressed at all. Ridiculous prices for what really amounts to cold soggy toast. The day old stuff sold in the takeaway section was kinda nasty. It doesn't reheat well and it's a $9-12 piece of old toast. The "fresh coffee" there is crazy overpriced at $7 for drip coffee (oh and i was told the wait for an espresso drink was like 30mins). Lately, it feels like all the famous Japanese eateries are popping up in LA, and I'm loving it. We're getting some seriously good eats from Japan right here in California. Bread, Espresso & is one of those spots--a well-known bakery straight from Japan famous for their fluffy, soft milk breads called "Mou" (which means soft in French, apparently). I've tried visiting this place a bunch of times before, but every time I got there, they were either closed or sold out of bread super early. Today, I finally made it in time and got some of the last Mou breads they had left--a regular one and a red bean version. These breads live up to the hype. They're incredibly soft, almost like biting into a cloud. I decided to toast them just a little at home, and wow, that took it to another level--crisp on the outside, still tender inside, with this subtle sweetness that's just perfect. The red bean one had this nice, earthy filling that paired so well with the bread's texture. No wonder people flock here! The staff were really friendly too, which made the whole experience even better. Parking's mostly street-side, so you might have to hunt a bit, but it's worth it. Got there at open on Sunday and a few people were ahead of me. Prices were steep for "toast" but if you like fluffy bread, it's pretty good. Honey toast brought back childhood memories for me and my husband loved the hojicha bun. We also enjoyed the curry toast and the orange cream bun. All items not too sweet and compliments bread that is already a little sweet itself. The drip coffee was burnt and we gifted my parents mou bread because they love bread. It came with a cute reheat instructions note. 3.5 stars. read more

Really loved the quality and flavor of the mou bread and service but agree with others that the prices are steep. Came in on a Wednesday morning and the entire selection was available - phew such a relief! I grabbed 2 mou loafs, a hot dog bun, and a croque madam. The texture of the bread is fabulous, so soft and pillowy. Also was pleasantly surprised that the hot dog bun included a Japanese style Arabiki sausage! Super delicious. However will note that the "mou" are itty bitty like a reasonable person could eat the entire thing in one sitting. I visited sometime early March 2025. Shortly after, I also visited their Omotesando location on a recent trip to Japan. Taste-wise, it's like the one in Japan, but more expensive. It's cool that bakeries from Japan are expanding overseas, but for what it is, the prices unreasonably high. If their target is customers local to the neighborhood, then I guess it makes sense. However I wouldn't recommend driving out of the way. Their specialty Mou starts at $6 and it's just a small Japanese shokupan (milk bread). Also, the seating area is very limited. On a Sunday morning in April, my family arrived just as they opened. The line wasn't too long. The interior is minimal and clean look. The selection has various breads displayed in the glass container. The mou square bread -raisin, original, chocolate was displayed, melon bread, chocolate melon bread, sandwiches, other pastries. Went on a weekday around 10:30 and there was no line. There were about 10 types of bread left. We came for the dine in menu. We got the French toast and the clam chowder. The bread itself is really good, very soft. The clam chowder was ok. The french toast was amazing! The best French toast I've tried. It was crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside and just absolutely delicious. It comes with sausage, bacon, salad, and a side of yogurt. I absolutely LOVE this spot and I'm so thankful that out of all the places 'Bread, Espresso &' could have launched their first U.S store, they chose the South Bay! The french toast plate was probably the best french toast I've ever had, it was so fluffy and creamy with the perfect amount of sweetness paired with the honey and berry yogurt & granola. I liked that the plate also came with a savory slice of bacon, sausage, salad, pickled onions, and an orange slice. I also shared the curry bread which was SO good! I highly recommend coming early. I think it's silly that people give this place one star when they haven't tried the food. If you follow them on Instagram, you can see their their hours. They sell out within 20 minutes of the mou bread when I was there. Even though the bread sells out pretty quickly at 7 AM and 1 PM, you could still order from their menu. The French toast is amazing. It's like custard in the middle. They don't have espresso available yet, but they told me they'll have it sometime this month. Once this place is functioning at 100%, this place will be a huge hit. Got there an hour after it opened and their bread shelf was empty already. Disappointed they didn't stock more and their next batch was not until 1pm. While their plain toast with butter and honey was good with a flaky crust, definitely not worth the $17 price point for just a side salad and 2 spoons of yogurt. Missed out on their French toast plate as it was sold out but they sold it a la carte in the fridge area? Their lobster bisque is very strong in shrimp flavor with small pieces of crawfish. The cappuccino was great, but I ended up also getting the chicken teriyaki sandwich with French fries, yuzu soda and honey bread because I was intrigued by it all. Everything was amazing. I picked up a couple of their specialty Mou breads to go, and they were absolutely delicious! I tried the curry and chocolate flavors--both were incredible. After reheating them in the oven, they came out perfectly crispy on the outside, while still soft and pillowy inside. The curry bread was savory and comforting, and the chocolate one was rich with just the right touch of sweetness. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully made. I visited on opening day at 11:00 am, and to my surprise, the bread--and even the coffee--was already sold out! I went back recently, and once again, almost everything was sold out. The only items left were French toast and sandwiches. I asked one of the staff members, and they mentioned that they usually bake bread in the morning and again around 1:00 pm. I ended up taking the French toast to go, and I really liked it! It wasn't too sweet, which was perfect for me. I warmed it up in the oven at home, and it was delicious. The seating area is cozy, with space for about 5-6 groups inside and a few more spots outside. The service was wonderful--most of the staff are Japanese, and they were super friendly with lovely smiles. The atmosphere of the café is really cute, but both times I visited, the bread case was completely empty. I'd love to see it fully stocked someday! I'm not a big fan of waiting in long lines, so I think I'll hold off on visiting again until things calm down a bit. Since I couldn't get what I wanted, I ended up walking over to Sweet Wheat to grab a coffee and a treat instead. I'll definitely give this place another try once the initial rush dies down. So far, I've been here on 3 occasions and I've enjoyed the food every time. I've had the plain mou bread, raisin, matcha, honey, and curry mous. My favorite is the curry mou. They are all best eaten warm and toasted. Also, every time I come here I have to get the French Toast plate. That is my ultimate favorite. Everything about it is delicious ...from the sausage, to the warm yumminess of the french toasted mou bread. There's also bacon, a salad, and a little cup of yogurt. I am never able to finish the whole plate since the portion is so large...so, I save it for the next day, and it's just as good. I've also tried the lobster bisque, but my favorite is still the french toast plate. The matcha latte is also good. Just be sure to mix it prior to drinking it (otherwise, it will be too sweet). The ambiance of the place is a small cafe style with a few seats (bar table as well as a few tables and seats on the sides of the restaurant). There is also seating outdoors. we visited this Japanese bakery that's known for their square japanese filled bread! we got a matcha latte, curry mou, and a custard mou. Custard Mou 2.5/5- ok this was extremely tough to cut and chew. HOWEVER, i loved the custard and whipped cream inside of it. i wouldn't get this again. paired nicely with our unsweetened matcha latte. Curry Mou 3/5 * this one was significantly better and the curry filling was super yummy! filled with carrots, ground beef, and curry sauce, it wasn't too saucy but flavorful. i loved putting the pumpkin, tomato, and onion into the bread to get a balanced bite. bread was a bit tough tho. matcha latte 2/5 * not pictured but it was okay. i think they use culinary grade matcha because it's very grassy and not as bright green as they advertise it to be. overall, maybe we got the wrong things and we missed out on the things that are supposed to be good... Have been here several times since the hype and long lines have died down. The mou breads are always soft and delicious. Also love that they give you instructions how to store the breads if you don't intend to eat them the same day. I've actually frozen and use their suggested technique to defrost and reheat...creates the original soft texture. Enjoy that they offer new mou bread flavors. Picked up a few for a friend to try and I enjoyed the cinnamon toast (fairly new) and chocolate. The chocolate is always one of my favs! Woke up at the crack of dawn for this and wow, it was worth it. We got there around 7:15am on Wednesday morning and the line was out the door (not around the corner though). We probably waited for about 10 minutes before we got inside to where the bread was. There's a limit of 1 Mou and 2 other bread per person, but the Mou was running pretty low by the time we got inside and some of the sweet popular flavors (like the Houjicha Cream and Melon Matcha) were sold out. They kept coming out with fresh ones though, which is how we managed to get the Custard. The bread is super fluffy with the perfect amount of sweetness. We also got lucky and got the Croque Monsier, which was really good. And whatever you do, DO NOT skip the French toast. The texture is unmatched and that alone is worth the wait. They're still working on getting their espresso machine to work so they currently only have drip coffee and tea but I'd love to come back for their drinks. The workers were very friendly and you can tell they're working as hard as they can. I'll definitely come back again once the hype dies down a bit. It's also super easy to get to and they even have a small parking lot in the back. Also I'd like to add that I think it's distasteful to give a 1-star review for a new establishment with a lot of hype for selling out of their products on their opening week, without even trying their food. There wasn't any problem with the wait or service however there were a few things I would like to mention for more improvement first, their matcha was overpriced being that their only size was small. There was more ice than matcha in my drink, and it the powder was concentrated at the bottom. Even though they sweetened it, it honestly just tasted like bitter grass water. So overall, not good matcha latte. second, expanding on their prices, regarding the aesthetic visual appeal I understand but considering the long term potential, I don't think I would go here time to time. I've been meaning to check this place out since I've seen it on IG. I happened to be running an errand nearby and parked right next door so I had to stop here. Got the chocolate mou and it was light, fluffy, and just slightly sweet. Reminds me of a mochi chocolate croissant in a square form and minus the butter croissant taste. Super tasty and the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack. The curry mou and flavored brioches looked interesting too so I'll have to come back for those. I skipped the matcha latte but I'll try it next time. It was my first time visiting so I asked the woman at the register what is mou and she was very friendly, sweet, and explained how its made. Very modern decor. Love the modern grays of the natural stone tables and tile. Even the ceiling tiles are painted gray. Walnut wood and olive booths/mid century modern chairs are super tasteful. Small parking lot in the back of building, street parking as well. Once you walk in to the left, you can grab a tray and tong to pick out your shokupan mou breads, pastries and sandwiches. Once at the register, I noticed more trays of different shokupan mou breads, so of course I had to do the last minute purchase thing. I wish they would've had everything in the case in the front, then you can pick and choose want you want to get, instead of thinking that this was all they had left.
