There's no missing or mistaking the delicious aroma of Breaking Buns as you pull up to the parking lot. Even if there were more than the pair of food carts that are already present, you would be able to identify this cart by scent alone immediately, and be explicably drawn to it, like being caught in a tractor beam! Between the two of us, we ordered three Pork Belly Bao, and two each of the Szechuan Cow Bao and the Braised Beef Tonkatsu Bao, to get a good feel for multiple dishes, not realizing how incredibly filling they are, meaning our lunch order also became our dinner! But no complaints were heard from us either time, as we enjoyed every single bite! No wonder there aren't many other carts at this little pod; they've probably all been put out of business, or had to move elsewhere, thanks to Breaking Buns' aromatic ascendancy, and surprisingly affordable pricing. You'd be hard-pressed to find a cheaper, more filling, and more delicious meal anywhere in P-town! It may be a little out of the way for us, but I guarantee my wife and I will be returning here in the future. Very recommended!

Good food, and humble service. I had been cravings for these from a while and this is the only place in Portland I could find them. I am so glad they opened up here. The Asian flavors, the refreshing slaw, the pillowy Bao and the generous portions, all worth a trip. I would call them to make sure they are open next-time, but it's totally worth the trip. If you are in the area, don't forget to stop for them.

The HIGHS - We ordered the Baos and they came out fresh and made to order! - Baos themselves were HUGE, soft, and fluffy - You could tell the meat was very well braised over a several hours since it was nicely marinated - Loved the side of Asian fusion coleslaw, much better than your typical American coleslaw. I enjoyed the green onions and the tangy sauce complemented the meat in the baos. - Service about 10-15 mins, very reasonable wait - ~$12 for 3 baos which I think is also reasonable The MIDS - Braised meat was a little too salty for my taste - The pork belly bao absorbed a little too much of the sauce and sort of fell apart in the middle - Seating area and tables was a little barren given its remote location, but was quiet and had plenty of parking. We opted to eat in our car instead. CONCLUSION I loved the baos and would come back to try the other flavors! There is ALOT of variety to try from. Everything was fresh and made to order. There aren't many places around portland where you can get a big bao like this for the price.

Overall - Enjoyed the experience and would recommend, although the location feels a bit hidden with limited parking. Location - Breaking Buns can be easy to miss as it's in a gravel parking lot with a few other food carts and a small little market next to it. There are a few parking spots up front with plenty of sitting space with some covered spots. Service - They were fairly quick but I wouldn't say it's was the most friendly or rude which I honestly appreciate sometimes. Food - We ordered the BBQ Pork Rodeo Bao and it was packed full of flavor, in particular strong on mushrooms in a fluffy bun - recommend eating it over a plate because the bun can rip at the bottom. I added the cold slaw on top for that extra crunch too!

located with other food carts, the food cart pod was located in an awkward location. there was a small gravel parking lot right next to the breaking buns food cart. outside seating available, probably nicer to sit at on warmer sunny day! we ordered 6 buns, 3 of each of the following, braised beef tonkatsu bao & pork belly bao. both came out hot and with a side of coleslaw. the wait time between ordering and receiving our food was decent, as it was made to order. the braised beef tonkatsu bao was packing with flavor, you can tell the beef was soaked up with flavor, and as you ate it, the beef would easily tear with each bite. however, the longer you ate the bao, the saltier the bao tasted - to the point it kinda hurts your mouth if you dont cleanse your palate. it was nice to have the coleslaw there to reset the palate - it tasted more like a choppy asian salad than coleslaw which i enjoyed more than i thought. i had the pork belly bao after the braised beef tonkatsu bao and it the flavor was a bit underwhelming (probably because the braised beef tonkatsu had a stronger flavor profile). there was more pork belly than mushroom in the filling, filling was soaked in sauce, which i dont mind for the most part. however, the sauce soaked into the bun and fell apart as i was eating it (ended up having to use chopsticks to eat the rest). the filling both had somewhat of a mushy texture and with the bao bun soaked in sauce, the bun overall had a mushy texture as you ate it. i find myself enjoying the food overall and look forward to trying other flavors of bao buns when im in the area next!

Fabulous bao! We tried the rodeo pork, Philly cheesesteak, and orange chicken. They were all explosions of flavor surrounded by pillowy bun goodness. We both liked the pork tops of the three, but again, all great. Can't wait to return to try the rest!

We ordered the Chicken Philly, Rodeo and Spicy Shrimp Bak. Their combinations are inventive but the execution is lacking. The bao would soak most of the sauce and you can notice that the proteins were not seasoned. The shrimp in particular was very plain. Our favorite was the Rodeo which had crispy onion and the sauce coated everyday. Service was nice and plenty of parking near the food cart.

The buns were delicious! I think the noodles benefited from some extra sides of hot sauce and sweet chili but it lasted me and my wife 3 days. Epic portion, and the folks running the carts were kind. Definitely felt out of the way and dark by the cart. I would say it's still worth making the trip to try the buns!

The true hidden gem of the Reed Neighborhood. Absolutely will blow your socks off. Phenomenal food, friendly staff, and proper service. The vibe here is immaculate every time I stop by as well!

The food is always delicious! My favorite thing to order is the Szechuan beef it is so yummy. Their services is always fast and accommodating. It's a gravel parking lot with some outside benches for a bite to eat in the sun with friendly workers who have remembered us by first name basis now lol!

I came back the other night to get some buns and I love how they're open late night! The side cabbage goes so well with the buns, and the sauces are delightful. As always, the buns are soft, fluffy, and complement the saucy toppings in the middle.

The fried rice's flavor was pretty muted..I prefer a little saltiness in my fried rice and it honestly had barely any salt? It tasted like plain rice with a little soy sauce and maybe oil flavor? Just not very aromantic in general.. I disliked the Mandarin Crispy Chicken the most as I had an issue with the breading. It was very thick and each bite felt more breading than chicken..The flavor of the sauce was good but with how thick the breading was, the inside of the chicken had no flavor at all once I bit in.. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but I don't think I'll be back to try any others at least for now. It was a Friday night so it was busy but I'll say service was good and we had a minimal wait time!

The service was good and the staff was attentive during our visit. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Hand-Ripped Youpoo Noodle: The absolute star of the meal. The wide, hand-ripped noodles had the perfect chewy texture you look for. They were tossed in a deeply savory, slightly spicy chili oil sauce and topped with a generous amount of perfectly seasoned minced beef and fresh bok choy. It was incredibly satisfying and a must-order. Popcorn Chicken: This was a bit of a letdown. While it looked golden brown and came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, it was not special at all and lacked any unique flavor or punch compared to the other dishes. Spicy Chili Oil Wontons: These were packed with flavor! The wonton wrappers were delicate, and the filling was juicy. They were swimming in a robust, aromatic chili oil that had a nice kick and a touch of vinegar sharpness. Why 4 stars instead of 5? While the noodles and wontons were excellent and the service was good, the atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable. The restaurant was completely empty when we went, but it was super cold inside because the window was wide open. Between the chilly draft and the fairly generic popcorn chicken, it misses out on a full 5 stars.

Typically at most Chinese restaurants, especially fried dishes, you'll see a pool of oil at the bottom of the dish. This is not the case here, and their sauces also keep their oil usage to the minimum. The food doesn't feel as heavy, and they nail most of their Szechuan flavors well. Their service is always fast and friendly. There is a gentleman in glasses that is always happy to serve and answer your questions. He is always happy to pack your food for you to go if you have leftovers as well, which is a lovely gesture. They have very cute decorations inside, from lucky cats with fortune cookies in their mouths, or a painted wall with a Panda cooking delicious food. I'd steer clear from their soup dishes, most of them lack flavor. I highly recommend their Chopped Pepper Fish and their Jade Tofu items though. Very flavorful and not very heavy! Plenty of parking is available which is lovely for eating in Portland, do not let this spot be missed if you've never tried it!
