Also ordered the Wagyu Slider, at $9 price not bad, flavor was good and it came with fries. Service was friendly and attentive. St. Patrick's Day at Brigantine! Festive ambiance for the day! It all starts with a cold Celestial Navigation IPA beer. Then the Brig house salad, full of artichoke hearts, craisins and feta cheese. Onto the main course! The corned beef and cabbage special was so good! The beef was lean and fork tender. The red potatoes and cabbage were just as tender! Heard the Brig was a local institution and we have a family friend who worked here for decades as a bartender. Was seated at our pick of tables on 4pm Monday. Started with couple orders of CALAMARI - big thick strips - sooooo good. We were tempted to order another but all the other dishes came and were so generous we refrained. The NAPA VALLEY NACHOS were delicious with potato instead of tortilla chips and blue cheese - never seen this dish on any napa menus but I guess pt Reyes is the Napa connection? Marin is close enough? Def wanna eat this quick before the fontina really solidifies or the chips get soggy. The fried fish, grilled swordfish, and skirt steak TACOS were all seriously good. Hearty, flavorful, moist. Bet Taco Tuesdays are amazing here - something to keep in mind for next visit! I didn't try but heard from others (locals who are regulars here) that the CLAM CHOWDER was watery and the MAC N CHEESE was also not cheesy - not sure if an off night or they changed the recipes. But we'd gotten a couple orders of both (because they usually like it!) and had quite a bit leftover to take home and doctor up a bit. Had a BRIG MARG - think server said it had OJ so not a traditional marg but very easy to drink the whole big ol pint glass. They have their own beers too! Not sure what we ordered was on the happy hour menu but there were a lot of good options on there. We had a very large group, I believe 10 people. When the reservation was made, they told us that they would not split the check. Everybody should bring cash. This is so antiquated, I can't hardly believe it. But for the fact that the waitress violated that policy and allowed some of us to pay with credit cards separately, it would have been a much lower review. The food was okay but dealing with that many people, drinks, appetizers and meals with cash was a true nightmare. Get your act together Brigantine. There are modern systems that would permit the server to easily separate checks. With your prices you should be able to afford it. read more

The service was excellent. The oysters and drinks were very good. But the clam chowder was gray and gelatinous. The encrusted shrimp with coconut felt store purchased like fish sticks. The famous fish taco was so thin and wimpy with cheddar cheese and ranch dressing. We planned to pay for everything and leave but our Server and the Manager would not hear of it. We often come here for a nice relaxing lunch or dinner while visiting Point Loma. This is the second place I took my wife after we began dating. The service is usually great and the view of the marina is quite pleasant. This particular meal, we just split a bunch of apps....! Between the cups of chowder, coconut shrimp, crab & shrimp fondue (our favorite) and cocktail Del Mar (our other favorite) we were absolutely stuffed and had such a nice variety of flavors! Oysters had lots of barnacles, and pieces of broken oyster pieces in the oyster. Usually the shells are cleaned up before opening. Also, the tray they served the oysters in was water with a tiny handful of ice. Horrible presentation. The waitress didn't give us silverware or napkins so we weee eating with toothpicks and spoons. And using our drink napkins for our hands. She did finally bring silverware when we weee almost done eating. Food was good. It was OK. I went mid-week and didn't expect it to be crowded. It wasn't, but it was, kinda. Maybe there were just more people there than they expected. Our service was slow. I mean, really slow. I did see other servers going ten times the speed of our server, so you can clearly get some great service, but we were sitting down for 5-10 minutes before we even talked to anyone. That doesn't sound long, but it was a really long time while we watched other people get food and drinks! The food was also in the same category: it was ok. It wasn't great, it wasn't bad. But hey, it's a raw bar, right? I don't think I've ever even heard of a raw bar that had outstanding food: they serve raw oysters! A nice place, a nice view, a nice location. It is a good happy hour, but there is not seating for big groups and it is "find your own seating". The hostesses sit and watch as guests predatorily watch over patrons shoulders until they are ready to leave so they can take the seats. The location is wonderful . We came for Fourth of July while staying in the island and chose to sit on the balcony . It was fun one of their specials of night was the was jelll-o shots (bringing back memories of college days !). Enjoyed the chocolate martini and a Elijah Craig bourbon. We had the bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp which was a bit disappointing only because I thought the shrimp would be bigger therefore making the bacon not be so dominant and the crab and shrimp flavors balance better . The sauce that was with it had a nice flavor. Our other meal was the surf and turf special. The steak was a little over cooked for med rare but still very tasty and juicy. The lobster was soft and not fishy tasting. The crab cake was light and a good balance of flavor in the style of a soft filling vs a lump cake style. The dinner was finished off w their mud pie . It was a not too sweet or overly coffee flavor but something was just missing for the slice being so thick. Like a thicker ribbon of fudge or an offset drizzle of caramel which some mud pie can have. It's really a 4 star place because I have found some of the food hit and miss but don't get me wrong. I love the Brig and have gone to this and the other locations for many, many years. I always sit in the bar area. It is just more fun there. Kids are welcome in the bar, by the way. The fish taco has always been and still is the best in San Diego. It is terrific. And if you like spice, use the bottle of the Brig's own hot sauce. It has a great flavor and it is really not that spicy. The mud pie is a little hit and miss. Sometimes it is massive and sometimes it is on the small side. I could be wrong but I am guessing it is made offsite. Had lunch at Brigantine yesterday and I was quite pleased with the food and ambience. I had a cup of clam chowder which was thick, hot, and full of clams and bacon. Very good. Then I had grilled swordfish tacos which were tasty, although the swordfish was a bit dry. The homemade potato chips were great, however. I at at about 12:15 pm on a Wednesday afternoon and the place was empty although it did seem to fill up as I was leaving around 1. The Brigantine in Point Loma is popular with the local Portuguese fishing families who live in the area. It is located right at the beginning of shelter Island on the right. The dining room itself is upstairs. If you need to use the elevator, you have to go towards the back---it is a bit difficult to locate. Although the Brigantine is part of a local restaurant group, I think the food might be slightly better at the La Mesa branch. The bar in Point Loma is very spacious, so it seems there is always somewhere to sit, unlike La Mesa, which crowds up by 4:30 pm each day. In addition,, the servers in Point Loma are not as pleasant of efficient than those in La Mesa---not sure why. Even if I sit in the bar, I will to order off the dinner menu, which is more extensive .The dinner menu comes out at 4:30 pm. I recommend any of the fish dishes or the prime rib. read more

Where should I start?!?? I absolutely loved my time here at the Point Loma Brigantine. Stopped by for my partner's birthday and they made it so much more special for us. Altered them of any allergies that we had, they made sure to properly inform us of the menus contents and passed the message on to the chefs. My server Charlotte was an absolute delight, very sweet and informed. One of the managers, I believe her name is Yaya, came to check in on us while we were eating as well. Today my husband and I visited the brigantine in Poway. First, they gave us the choice of sitting in the bar and the patio, which was packed and no one sitting in the dining room. It was a bit uncomfortable from the get go. I ordered the calamari and it was delicious, superb, Cooked to perfection. I ordered the moroccan salmon. The salmon had a lot of blood meet and was a bit spicy. I love spicy but this was over the top. My husband ordered the New York steak without all of the blue cheese crust. The steak was good but they served it on top of his mashed potatoes. It was a bit unsightly to say the least. Generally I like the brigantine but was highly disappointed with this visit. read more

Ooooohhhh, the Brigantine. Yeah, I would say that four stars is about on point for this particular Brig. It certainly is the best of the bunch, (I've been to quite a few of them over the years) and always have a pretty decent time. Some of my faves are the fish tacos which I think could go toe to toe with anyone in town. Crazy right?! Not only are they good here but the quality is very consistent from location to location. There's no knocking the chowder and they mix a mean vodka martini. Plenty of local beer to choose from and all at a decent price. The bar area will fill up quickly but it is always a pretty solid crowd. Not too dressy but nobody is showing up smelling like fish fresh off one of the local charters either.
