Today my husband and I visited the brigantine in Poway. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First, they gave us the choice of sitting in the bar and the patio, which was packed and no one sitting in the dining room. It was a bit uncomfortable from the get go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the calamari and it was delicious, superb, Cooked to perfection. I ordered the moroccan salmon. The salmon had a lot of blood meet and was a bit spicy. I love spicy but this was over the top. My husband ordered the New York steak without all of the blue cheese crust. The steak was good but they served it on top of his mashed potatoes. It was a bit unsightly to say the least. Generally I like the brigantine but was highly disappointed with this visit. read more

Ooooohhhh, the Brigantine. Yeah, I would say that four stars is about on point for this particular Brig. It certainly is the best of the bunch, (I've been to quite a few of them over the years) and always have a pretty decent time. Some of my faves are the fish tacos which I think could go toe to toe with anyone in town. Crazy right?! Not only are they good here but the quality is very consistent from location to location. There's no knocking the chowder and they mix a mean vodka martini. Plenty of local beer to choose from and all at a decent price. The bar area will fill up quickly but it is always a pretty solid crowd. Not too dressy but nobody is showing up smelling like fish fresh off one of the local charters either. Now that I have finally taken the time to write this review I realize I don't come here nearly enough. read more

Went on a lovely Sunday evening (6:00PM) and sat on the balcony with a view of the lot and the marina. Ordered a lavender cocktail and share a dozen oysters (Kumeyaay and some oysters from Virginia), octopus and clams. Everything was delicious. The Kumeyaay oysters were sweeter than the other. Enjoyed my lavender cocktail as well. Our server took awhile to come and the manager was the one to went ahead to bring our waters. Inside was a bit busy at the time. Lots of metered parking at the lot. I was a but confused with the entrance as I have never been in this location. It is to the left of the boat shop, facing Shelter Island Dr. read more

It had been quite a while since I had been to Brigantine, not for lack of anything except there are so many restaurants in San Diego (lucky us!). It's a staple for a reason. The menu options are classic, nothing too trendy, just delicious steaks and seafood and sides. We started with the crab and shrimp fondue, which is gooey and decadent. Then, I had a big ol' steak with a blue-cheese truffle crust that was cooked perfectly. Served with mashed potatoes and veg. Plus, at the time I went, there were some special desserts, including a take on strawberry shortcake, which was a not-too-sweet way to end the meal. Our service was excellent. I'd make a reservation because it gets pretty busy. It's nice to know that a place you enjoyed back in the day still hits all the same high notes years later. That kind of consistency is impressive. read more

Not knowing the area and many places are closed on Monday we tried Brigantines on the waterfront for the first time and I'm glad we did. Great service, relaxed ambiance and both of our fish dishes were excellent. read more

We've been coming here for decades but it had been awhile. My husband wanted to celebrate his birthday lunch with the discount coupon he received in the mail so we arrived at 2:00 on a chilly spring day and sat as close to the fire as possible! If you haven't been to the brig before, the decor is outstanding and the space is inviting and comfortable. They know how to design their restaurants. I decided to try something new, the surf and turf tacos with skirt steak and shrimp with coleslaw and kettle chips for $20.50. They have a number of entrees with skirt steak, which is a favorite of mine. The tacos were stuffed full of the steak and shrimp but the combo together was t to my liking. The hot spicy sauce on the shrimp tasted like a can of tomato paste with something very hot added and it was a bit slimy and it detracted from the taste of the steak. I'd separate the surf from the turf and serve one of each taco if I were to order it again, and just have the shrimp grilled. The corn tortillas are chewy and flavorful and divine and the taco never fell apart as I took bites. That never happens!!! Outstanding!! Our server could have been a bit more attentive at refilling ice tea and it took awhile to take our orders and get our food. Hmmmm... maybe it was the late lunch understaffed. I don't know, but it wasn't their normal attentiveness. Hence the four stars My husband had their swordfish with the avocado butter and rice risotto and broccolini. This is a mainstay and he almost always orders it. Delicious as usual! Prices are up like everywhere else but you can't beat the ambiance here. Give it a try!! And you MUST EAT THE MUD PIE!!! read more

We sometimes bring out-of-town guests here for dinner. Our last visit was Saturday two weeks ago. The seafood on the whole was pretty good, especially their calamari. However: 1. The coconut shrimp was very dry and tasteless, instead of being juicy and fresh. 2. The grilled Halibut was served on a very basic bed of small beans, sundried tomatoes, and a mixture of other sour items. This felt like a cheap substitute for fresh grilled vegetables. 3. The bread was absolutely awful! It was stale, and not even properly cut so that it could be shared. THE VERY WORST bread we have ever been served in 40 years of eating in seafood restaurants in San Diego and around the world. The prices also have rocketed here, so that will likely be our last visit. I'm updating from 2 to 3 Stars because the management took responsibility in a sincere manner. read more

Save yourself time and go elsewhere. The worst service I've seen in San Diego so far. Rude, unprofessional hosts should be fired. We got put us at the table directly in the sun where is was extremely hot, no problem. We let them know we would like a shaded table. After which, we waited and she tried to put us at another table inside in direct sun. And then when I said we want a table in the shade she walked off swearing. This is insanity and we left immediately. Plenty of incredible restaurants in San Diego I would recommend your spend your money elsewhere. read more

The ambiance perfectly matches their location on Shelter Island. Good energy, and not trendy. They have a private parking lot, but it's small and you won't always find an open spot. The staff is friendly and professional. The food is above average; to the point that I sometimes actually crave it. The reason they're getting four stars though is because of their prices. It's not super expensive like touristy Gaslamp, but I've never left there feeling like my check was on par with my meal. read more

The Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi was not good. The parmesan sauce tasted bad. The carrots and green beans had so much butter cooked into them they were not edible. I was surprised why this location after I ate there had poor reviews compared to the other locations. I wish I had saw Yelp first. I would have tried Little Italy instead. When I first walked in with my husband they asked if he had a reservation. Their open table said closed so we just showed up to an empty restaurant at 3:30pm today. We were told we could not sit at the nice restaurant side because we didn't have a reservation. There was one couple in the entire room. We were directed to go to the loud bar area. If we had not paid for parking I would have left. It was loud from music and had TVs on of women's volleyball. Basically women with thongs up their butts while we tried to eat. The calamari is almost as good as La Mesa but not quiet, and the potato skins I would not order again. I wish I had known Ketch was across the street with a nice view of the water. I would have gone there instead. read more

Came here for happy hour on a weekday! The happy hour area near the bar was pretty crowded and the actual dining room was pretty empty, so seemed like most customers were there for happy hour. Great prices! $6 happy hour means everything for $6 including the Brig margarita, the sliders served with french fries, the house salad, and 3 oysters. If you're specifically looking for an oyster happy hour, I think there are other places around town that could probably serve you better happy hour oysters for cheaper (you're looking at $2 per oyster here and the oysters here were a little...slimy?), but definitely had a well-rounded experience here with a cozy ambiance, friendly service, and good food all-around. Came around holiday season and they had holiday decorations up which was a plus too! Parking was easy but have to pay a small fee for the meters. Right next to the Point Loma pier, so great to come here on a date night and walk by the waterfront or grab some gelato/beer afterward. read more

Total disappointment for dinner tonight at Brigantine Point Loma in San Diego. I went out with my fiancé to celebrate our engagement. We let them know when we got there that that's what we're celebrating. And, uh, nothing. Crickets. Didn't make you feel special at all. The only reason we went to this restaurant is because we got a coupon for a free appetizer at the hotel we're staying at. So we decided to give it a shot. And when we gave it to this waitress, she said, You can only have the two cheapest things on the menu, which were like $3 cheaper. So I was like, OK, can we just pay the difference? Of course not. No, you can't do that. It's ridiculous. Why would you ask? And then, um, anyways, that was the off-putting part of the night. So anyways, we ended up ordering our food. We got a steak. We got some oysters. The oysters were actually good. The steak was horrible. I could make a better steak on a Wednesday from going on to a butcher shop near my house or a grocery store. Very gristly steak. It was, you know, $50 or whatever. And then we got some Brussels sprouts. Decent. And, um, what else did we get? Clam chowder. It was pretty good, but cold. Very little clams. I would highly not recommend this place. Um, yeah, garbage. Oh and the best part about this is we brought a couple pieces of the steak home for our dog and she didn't even want to eat. When I cook she's all about the steak. Very disappointing going out to eat these days. read more

Brigantine has a beautiful waterfront view. It's located on Shelter Island on a pier overlooking San Diego Bay. The interior has a wooden nautical theme with lots of accents related to the sea. The atmosphere is quiet and comfortable. The menu is of course seafood as well as some steak and pasta options. They serve delicious New England style clam chowder. My meal choice was the Macadamia Crusted Mahi Mahi with parmesan risotto & chef's vegetables. All cooked perfectly. The service is also top-notch. With the excellent location right off the water, you can expect the prices to be on the higher end of the scale. read more

Great spot with multiple locations that serves up some pretty good oysters (raw and rockefeller). I'd recommend the signature grilled marinated swordfish to pair with some oysters as appetizers. The cocktails are also quite good. Service was good despite some staffing shortage issues. Definitely recommend giving this spot a try if you're staying nearby! read more

It is more like 3.5 rating. We made a reservation and was seated promptly. For parking, it was metered until 6pm for 7 days a week. We didn't get a table with a view because there were a few large parties that night. Service: 4/5 given they were busy. There were 2 servers taking turns checking on us. Food: 3.5/5 we love the appetizers more than the main course. Highly recommend the oysters on the shell and the calamari. The shrimp and crab Cobb salad was yummy but had too much dressing. The fish dishes were were bland. Drinks: 3/5 the strawberry margaritas was watered down. We will still go back for happy hours to try other appetizers. Maybe go to Del Mar or Coronado restaurant for a better view. read more

Great seafood dinner! Ate outside on the balcony which overlooks the parking lot and Harbour in the distance. Comfortable white table cloth service. Server was friendly and helpful. My husband started with shrimp cocktail and I started with crabcake. For entrees, my husband had New York steak whule I enjoyed the jumbo sea scallops. All food was delicious and presented well! The restaurant is beautiful, the staff is pleasant and the view is great. We ordered the seafood platter (six Maine lobster tails) and two options of oysters. The oysters were great....get the Washington State oyster as they were huge. Cocktails which were good showed up after the entrees arrived....weird. The six Maine lobster tails as the menu states are actually 3 Maine lobster tails cut in half so six halves not six tails. Some of the shrimp were mushy which is not good. It was nice (pricey) but we are locals and probably will not be back. read more

The Brig in Shelter Island is located in a cozy restaurant highlighted with lots of wood accents. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. When it was later in the night near closing time, they made sure to give last chance to order from the bar menu. It was very much appreciated. The cocktail drinks were a little pricey but still very well made with great care. We tried a variety of bar menu items from calamari, to shrimp items and several tacos. Everything was great and we loved their bar atmosphere. I can imagine happy hour would be fantastic here! We loved it here and will be back to try a full dinner. read more

My girlfriend and I went here for a little Friday date night. Made reservations for 7 and it was packed in there. We started off with some cocktails of the Spicy Margarita and Trader Mort's Mai Tai type which were both delicious. We had the Crispy Coconut Macadamia Shrimp as an appetizer which was sooo good with all the chopped vegetables and yummy sauce that brings a ton of flavors together in each bite. By the time we got to our huge salads we'd also filled up on the tasty fresh bread. The salads were both amazing and like legitimate meals rather than something that makes you feel like you just licked your front lawn. Brigantine is great. Would recommend bringing anyone here for a nice meal. read more

I would also like to mention that if you are a fan of creamy horseradish, the recipe has been altered across all locations. Previously, it was a delicious, handmade horseradish, but it has now been replaced with a type of horseradish-flavored sauce that resembles a slimy dressing. Consequently, I will no longer be ordering their French dip, regardless of the location. read more

We have always loved The Brigantine. However our last visit to The Brig in Point Loma was such a disappointment. We will not return there again. The food was great. However the service left a lot to be desired. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated outside overlooking the boats, my granddaughter and I.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It took awhile to be noticed but when we did, a male waiter came and brought us water and took our order. A bit later a female waiter came by to take our order and we said it had already been taken by someone else. She did not looked pleased at that. After a while our food was brought by the male waiter and we never saw him again. When we finished we flagged down the female waiter for a to go box and our bill. She said she would let our waiter know. People who sat out there after us were given great service and even left before we got our bill. I had to ask again for the bill and a to go box. Finally she came and dropped off the to go box and the credit card bill machine and left. No time for us to ask a question. Tried to get a receipt but that was useless. So sad to have this kind of service at The Brigantine. read more

First time guests. We had reservations on a Friday night at 6:15pm. We arrived 15 min early and were quickly seated. They give you the inside or out, booth or table. We went with the booth. It was not busy. Dress code, was a mix between casual and business casual. They have ample parking space. If you have reservations at 6, that's when the meters DONT require payment! 6pm til the following morning. So you can park there and leave your car if you wanted to spend the rest of the night in Shelter Island. Just no overnight parking. Our waitress was friendly and made sure to check on us when necessary. You are given free bread with whipped butter as you look over the menu. I believe it was brown and white bread. For our appetizer, we ordered the crab and shrimp fondue. This didn't have chunks of seafood in it. I'm assuming it was blended all together cause you can taste it in the fondue. It was served with a side of toasted garlic bread and that was great. Even delicious on its own. We ordered the marinated swordfish. It was cooked perfectly and is a great choice if you don't want anything heavy. It had broccolini and risotto. The wagyu burger wasn't too heavy as well. We asked for both steaks to be sliced, but only the ribeye came sliced. I was also surprised by the size of the 20 oz ribeye. I've ordered 20 oz bone-in steaks at other steakhouses, and this one looked noticeably smaller than what I was expecting. Between the two of us, I think we each got around three slices. That response really threw me off. At an upscale steakhouse, after ordering steaks and five different sides, I don't want my dinner reheated. I want it to come out hot the first time. And that really sums up my experience at Born and Raised. I think it was so disappointing because I was SO excited about going. I want to be fair and say this was NOT bad food. The bread was fantastic. The sides had great flavor. The steaks tasted good. The personalized birthday menu was adorable. Their communication before our reservation was excellent, and the way they handled my friend's cake genuinely made me feel like they cared about making the birthday special. That's why I'm so conflicted. Everything leading up to dinner screamed top-tier experience, but once we actually sat down and started eating, everything became very lackluster. Having to repeatedly remind our waitress about things, having my margarita completely forgotten, one of the steaks not being sliced as requested, and then having an expensive spread arrive cold just did not match the level of restaurant Born and Raised presents itself to be. For a roughly $350 dinner at an upscale steakhouse, I don't think expecting attentive service and hot food is asking for too much. I really, REALLY wanted to love Born and Raised. Unfortunately, for me, it just did not live up to the hype.

We tend to dine early for dinner - between 3-5pm. We are not amenable to crowds or parking challenges so we decided to pass on the new location and return to the Point Loma/Shelter Island Brigantine for dinner May 18th. Made reservations - for a booth - for two of us for 5pm. We had a 2pm appointment that could run 2-3 hours. Mason who answered the phone stated with the reservation if we arrived early we could be seated. If we arrived late, it would depend on availability. Very understandable. We called back to inquire if Valet parking was available. The young hostess who answered the phone responded no. I further inquired as to the parking situation and she replied there is metered and unmetered parking. Guess I should have done more research to understand this. To begin with: We have not been here in several years and were unware of the need to have lots of quarters to pay for the parking. We arrived at 4:30 and thankfully we were rescued by other local patrons who knew the drill, and kindly handed my husband enough quarters to satisfy the need. Walking up the long flight stairs with terribly arthritic hips was a slow process, but with my husbands assistance and encouragement we made it to the top. There is a hostess station where 2 young ladies greeted us. I said we had reservations for 5pm. She asked for the name and led us to the left - taking us to a table. At this point there were far more empty than occupied booths and tables. She was advised we had reserved a booth. The look on her face (I read of disgust) was not a good continued start. She literally left us standing there and retreated to the hostess station - returning to seat us at a booth. We were greeted by our server whose name was never stated, nor does anyone wear a nametag. While waiting for our beverages another group of 6 arrived and were treated to the same experience "Reservation was for a booth" ... Suffice to say it is a really unpleasant game played. Our Caeser Salad and Wedge Salad was delicious. Crisp and very tasty. Shrimp cocktail was excellent quality. Perfectly chilled and attractive plate service. Husband had Lobster Tempura Tacos and he really enjoyed them. I chose the bacon wrapped prawns stuffed with crab. Suffice to say I would have sent it back had we been checked on earlier than half-way thru eating. It had gotten very busy (Prom? Grad Night? Weddings?) It was very overcooked. VERY. A group of us had the pleasure of eating at the Brig in Point Loma last week. Some of us were from out of town and hadn't been to a Brigantine before. I have lived in San Diego for the past 10 years and I'm very familiar with the great quality of food and service that you can count on when you go to any of the Brigantine's or Miguel's restaurant. Our waiter, Feliz was top of the line- taking care of our needs with charm and wit- just spectacular...and the food was fantastic. We had the coconut shrimp appetizer, the house salad - the flakey fish & chips, macadamia crusted fresh mahi mahi, sear tuna.... -all delicious cooked to perfection. was visiting a friend from UCSD, he recommended we come here. i love sea food so i had very high expectations, needless to say i was not let down! we got more tacos than ive ever had in my life haha~ they were all so delicious too, none of them were simple and didnt play it safe, i think the best comparison i could make would be like if rubio's decided they wanted to start making good food with quality ingredients and interesting and delicious toppings. i also had an oyster shooter, that was interesting! overall: 5/5 I loved it! not too expensive either, definitely recommend, i wish i loved closer so i could come more often! read more

This is definitely more upscale restaurant. Be prepared to fork over the cash, but you will get a quality meal. Their peanut butter brownie dsssert is very rich and decadent. The lobster was juicy and succulent, served with grilled lemons and a garlic butter sauce that was simply divine. The prawn and oyster appetizers are very good and plentiful. Their twice baked potatoes are just as good as any that I ever fixed at home. They have an extensive wine list and take the time to go through it with you. read more

I had the worst FOOD POISONING. About two hours after eating Brigantine's lobster and crab salad, I was driving home and barley had time to pull over before I started vomiting violently- sadly it ruined my truck seat and clothes- it came on so quickly. I missed days at work. I made it home only to continue vomiting and diarrhea for the rest of the day, into evening and am hours. I'm now afraid to eat out as this was the most painful experience. This place was once the base camp throughout the America's Cup yacht races. It often had the harbor seafood feel to it. We by no means miss out on going here every single time we pay a visit to Shelter Island. The last visit I discovered the the entire restaurant had be remodeled from rustic to an upscale flair, but the very best fish tacos in the world are still the exact same. Ate here on my last trip to San Diego and ended up coming back for a return visit on my last day. The food was all so good especially the crab fondue. This place is really nice and in a great neighborhood, right by the water. They have a bar area, where it's easy to get a table, you can sit by a fire in the winter, and watch sports on the tvs. Unfortunately, the food is not great. A top restaurant should upgrade its food to be considered a great seafood restaurant. read more
